Discussion And the award for absolutely nutcase single-parent household goes to...
I jus finished Bastard (1st image), and it reminded me so much of Like Mother Like Daughter (2nd image).
Obviously the similarity is hving a psychopathic parent.

As much as we disapprove of Somin's actions, she is not a serial killer the same way Dongsu is. She sure is scary and manipulative as hell, but her crimes come from her twisted philosophy, not a blood-thurst, and she does not enjoy the gore and bloody stuff. Dongsu killed way more people just for his pleasure and even coerced his own son into participation.
So, while, for example, the arcs during which Somyng and Jin are trying to correspondingly protect Namsu and Gyeon Yun give a quite similar sense of a terror, Dongsu and Somin are on very different levels of terrible. Dongsu killed way more people for his pleasure and even used his own son for it.
Somin at least cares about Somyung's well-being, health and how she fits into society, and she does not make violence a part of their daily life (if Somyung were a little less observant, her life would've been very close to a normal life with a controlling parent). Just compare it to how crippled and neglected Jin is.

I mean she has also committed actual crimes, including multiple murders. Her not enjoying it in the same fetish-y way doesnt give her very many points.

Yeah but you know, there is still some difference between killing 3 people and, say, 100. For Somin murder is not the point, it is just means to make things right. For Dongsu it is the whole point.

Oh Im not arguing theres no difference, just not enough for this point to hold weight, especially as she feels no guilt about it so it cant even be properly held up as an "I felt like I had to do it" motivation. The only reason she doesnt like it is because she hates dirtying her hands and name, not because she has any moral obligations or reservations. If she could do so without the very real risk of getting caught (largely by Somyung), she'd have no objections to doing it more often. The restraint comes from how realistically difficult it is to get away with murder as a decently well-known person in polite society in a modern city, and how much planning she puts in to try and ensure she does, not anything to do with her.

We kinda started out at comparing which of them is more nuts and had worse impact on their child. I am saying that participating in dismemberments with your father (from the age of 5 or so) possibly has a worse effect on a child than losing your brother and then figuring out that it was your overly controlling mother's doing (at the age of 12).
I don't see what value speculations about "how many people Somin would've killed if she had an opportunity" add here.
