Bringing Home Maven Today šŸ–¤

I’m bringing home my Devon Rex kitten today! Her name is Maven, and she’s exactly 13 weeks old today. I’m so excited—but I haven’t had a kitten in about 25 years, so I’m also feeling a little nervous. 🄰

I’ve been more of a dog person throughout my life, but I’ve completely fallen in love with the Devon Rex breed. I previously had Brussels Griffons, who are known as ā€œmonkey dogsā€ and are almost like cat-like dogs, so the playful, affectionate and quirky personality of the Devon Rex really appealed to me.

We have a two-hour drive home today. I have a carrier and some Churu treats, and my teenage son is coming with me, so hopefully she’ll have a calm ride.

I’ve set up a separate ā€œcat roomā€ for her with her litter box, cat tree and everything else she’ll need while she settles in. I also bought a Feliway diffuser and plugged it in this morning.

I have a few questions for other Devon Rex owners:
Should I buy the same litter her breeder currently uses, or can I gradually combine it with the litter I’d prefer to use? I don’t want to make too many changes for her all at once.

She’s currently eating Purina kitten food, but I’d eventually like to transition her to Acana kitten food. How slowly should I introduce the new food, and how long should I keep her on her current food after bringing her home?

I’m also trying to decide about pet insurance. Trupanion quoted me approximately $75 per month with the lowest deductible. I’m wondering if I’d be better off putting that amount into a separate savings account for future veterinary expenses, although I know one major emergency could cost far more than I’ve managed to save.

I’m also contemplating paying for insurance for the first year to see if there are any major health issues that appear. Do most health issues arise within the first year or so?

I’d love to hear what other people have done and whether there’s anything else I should know for her first few days at home.

Update regarding Lucy! Does this track cam pic look like a DR?

Hi all,

Day 7 of missing Lucy, a track cam picked up a cat silhouette, does this look like a DR???

The last three nights at a spot ~300 ft away from my building, I spotted a cat under the shadows that looked like her! Spotting included earlier tonight.

Too dark to confirm, but each night with different people helping me search, we saw a coat with dark splotches and white paws, distinctive of Lucy! Never a good look at her face, and it was too dark to see any orange. She bolted each and every time after detecting us from afar.

Also the urgent bolting also leads me to think it’s her. The strays and outdoor cats in this complex never urgently run; they just pickup the pace and fast walk away.

more lore for this quest thus far:

Turns out the drone guy I hired is a bit of a fraud and scumbag. I was already skeptical before, including signing and NDA. I paid thru PayPal G&S and will see if charging back is possible without legal ramifications.

Local to me are two guys that do rescues free of charge from the good in their hearts. Others in town helped share my story with them. They heard about the drone guy who had blocked them long ago. We corroborated a lot of Sus things about that guy.

They lent and helped me setup humane traps with cellular track cameras. And one of them is a drone flier and did about 45 min more of thermal seeking. I hope to properly compensate and reward these guys when Lucy is finally home!

While they were packing up to leave for the night, we spotted the same cat, followed it for a bit. We shined a light on her and got the best look thus far but still in the shadows; its white features reflected the light and showed white feet for sure and possibly a white belly!

Staying hopeful and confident this is her!!

Tips for care?

Hey! Im a first time devon rex owner. I have two kittens, girl 3,5 months and boy 4,5 months. I was wondering if anyone had any tips about care. Specifically things like ear cleaning, baths, toothbrushing, nail trims etc.

For now i wipe them down with a pet safe wet wipe. Cut their nails in their sleep. They let me touch their teeth, but wont let the toothbrush in. They have also started biting a little lately, but i assume that's to do with teething.

Snake River Devons experience?

Hi all!

I'm in the PNW and have been looking for a Devon Rex kitten for a few months now, and I keep getting pointed toward Snake River Devons. Does anyone have experience working with Christi and can give me a little rundown of the process?

If there are any other breeders you know of in the WA/OR area that have available litters I'd love to hear about them! Thanks friends!

Still Missing, I’m devastated

I’m so sorry for making a second post, and one without any good news.

There’s no signs of my baby Lucy. She is the clingiest, cuddliest lap cat. She cries just to be held in our arms.

My world is shattered, she shouldn’t be anywhere except home.

I’ve done all that I can for 5 full days. We have just entered day 6.

What am I to do?? I want this nightmare to end.

UPDATE: hired a thermal drone service tonight, he’s found 140 pets in the past. Did NOT find Lucy šŸ˜” the guy says for cats he has found, no more than 200 feet away, even a month from missing.

Out almost $1k… but with colder nights and more incoming flash flood storms, I am so desperate to get her back.

Last night a friend I don't see often came by. She scooped Fiona up in her arms and held her against her chest. Fi immediately collapsed on her, she began purring and making biscuits, closed her eyes and even went to sleep! Fi does not like me to hold her like this and wriggles away when I try to give her luvvies. She only accepts so much haha. She doesn't do biscuits with me or purr very often. I was happy to see she loves my friend, but honestly I am bummed I don't get this kind of reception! My friend said it was because I am the mama and she needs to manipulate me, and we both agreed her chest is more supportive of a kitten (haha.) Has this happened to anyone else? Does the cat I adore to pieces not like me back? Please tell me I am not alone in this... I feel like my friend should take her if she makes the kitty so comfy and I don't. :(

Wanting a 2nd Devon Rex—boy or girl?

A month ago I got a beautiful Devon Rex boy. He is now five months old. I am thinking to get a second.

Breeder suggested a girl, vet suggests a boy.

Thoughts??

Just needed reassurance

Yesterday I selected a beautiful lynx point baby boy to bring home in October. Then last night I found out it was a girl.

I have only ever had boy cats. My late kitty was with me for 17 years, and my first kitten was my man for 18. (I’ve been so lucky). And I have always heard that girls can be more aloof, less cuddly. I know a coul girl cats who prove this wrong. But the meanest cats I’ve ever met were girls too.
But my rational brain tells me that a) this is a Devon and b) any cat is a lottery.

So I’m working on myself and my deeply set bias. Can you help? Share the stories of girl Devons who are obsessed with you and cuddle all the time.

I’m including her photo so you can see why I didn’t change my decision. I’m just fretting from now until October when we pick her up.

Lucy ran away. 2 full days now. I'm so worried

Both my cats escaped Sunday early morning while I was out of state for the weekend. I live in an apartment complex in NJ. 2-3 stories with breezeways.

My neighbors ring caught them leave at Saturday 2am. But all day Saturday they used litterbox at home (auto litterbox notifications) and used their auto feeder. When I returned home Sunday at 5pm, the door was wide open and cats were gone. The food in the bowl matched to just Sundays portion. So they left for good on Sunday.

After 3 hours of searching Rex (5M) was found in a bush ~160 ft away 2 buildings away, same shared parking lot. Since Sunday 8pm, I have been focusing full effort to bring Lucy (4F) home as well.

Now that it’s Day 3, my anxiety has reached its limits. She’s so small and she’s a clingy needy cat. She’s skittish and I fear things that scare her might’ve brought her way too far from home.

30 hours after being missing, my apartment management sent out an email flyer to 1000+ tenant emails. I’ve walked 30k steps each the past two days. I have neighbors who voluntarily spend their evening checking bushes.

I’ve gone far and near, trying to check every bush thoroughly over and over again.

I’m fearing for all the worst. I’m looking for reassurance and hope.

Local PD is notified, local Animal control and Vet are notified.

A take out container of her litter is outside my building (as advised by animal control) as well as some of her usual kibble. My bedsheet she loves sleeping on all day is hanging outside my door.

Ribbon and Yarn Detective

Found three more small skeins of yarn near my front door. Couldn't tell where she was getting them until I saw this...the clutter is worse because she has pulled organized things off shelves that I have yet to re-organize. After the first pic (of her bum in a basket,) I said her name and "NO!" - then the other pix happened. The baskets are full of ribbon and yarn to be moved as soon as possible. She came down for about 60 seconds, I shook my finger at her and said "No no no" (not meanly) and she took her paw an whacked my finger, and went back up to the top shelf. The struggle is real.

Can't believe Steven has grown so much in 8 weeks. Points if you can guess who is the kitten and who is the 5 year old 🤭

How long does your cat get used to new stuff?

Post image
47 Upvotes

3 months ago, I bought a hammock for my cats for them to sleep on, excited to take some really cute pictures of them passed out on the new hammock. And for 3 months, they never used it once!

Until yesterday morning! I woke up to one of my cats chilling on the hammock and being really comfy in it. And this morning, I saw my cat again using it!

This happened before when I bought my cats a new cat wheel. Bought a nice big wheel for them and they just ignored it for about a few months. And after that, they go really hard on it.

How do your cats react to the new things you buy for them? It seems like for my cats at least, it takes a while for them to feel explorative enough to give it a try.
