Bringing Home Maven Today š¤
Iām bringing home my Devon Rex kitten today! Her name is Maven, and sheās exactly 13 weeks old today. Iām so excitedābut I havenāt had a kitten in about 25 years, so Iām also feeling a little nervous. š„°
Iāve been more of a dog person throughout my life, but Iāve completely fallen in love with the Devon Rex breed. I previously had Brussels Griffons, who are known as āmonkey dogsā and are almost like cat-like dogs, so the playful, affectionate and quirky personality of the Devon Rex really appealed to me.
We have a two-hour drive home today. I have a carrier and some Churu treats, and my teenage son is coming with me, so hopefully sheāll have a calm ride.
Iāve set up a separate ācat roomā for her with her litter box, cat tree and everything else sheāll need while she settles in. I also bought a Feliway diffuser and plugged it in this morning.
I have a few questions for other Devon Rex owners:
Should I buy the same litter her breeder currently uses, or can I gradually combine it with the litter Iād prefer to use? I donāt want to make too many changes for her all at once.
Sheās currently eating Purina kitten food, but Iād eventually like to transition her to Acana kitten food. How slowly should I introduce the new food, and how long should I keep her on her current food after bringing her home?
Iām also trying to decide about pet insurance. Trupanion quoted me approximately $75 per month with the lowest deductible. Iām wondering if Iād be better off putting that amount into a separate savings account for future veterinary expenses, although I know one major emergency could cost far more than Iāve managed to save.
Iām also contemplating paying for insurance for the first year to see if there are any major health issues that appear. Do most health issues arise within the first year or so?
Iād love to hear what other people have done and whether thereās anything else I should know for her first few days at home.
