Software Engineering track change
Did anyone get an email from their mentor about the Software Engineering track change? They are adding more math? Does that mean our current track will change or only for new folks entering? It was not clear in the email.

I saw somebody in the WGU sub say that the change means that WGU could also be aiming for ABET accreditation.
I don’t know how true that is because I haven’t talked to my mentor about it yet

Makes sense. Discrete mathematics and calculus are pretty standard for computer programming degrees.

The way mine was worded, I think you get a choice on if you change program or not depending on your personal goals and circumstances. I’m about 75% done with my degree and I’d only change track if I get my credits converted and it doesn’t add significant time to my graduation goal.

Im just starting (6 classes in) and I have no desire to change anything. I thought it strange they would send us this email unless they were planning to change our track

Right?? I agree as well. I’m also only on my 6th class. I looked at the new classes offered and I’m not too excited about them. If I stay in my current degree though, I’d have to complete 9 courses a term which sucks because I don’t want to have to rush. I still don’t know what I’m going to do

They are adding 1 calculus and 2 physics classes or vice versa, I don’t remember. The were also removing a few classes, the one big one is Business of IT, which gives you a cert. They are working towards an ABET accreditation, but aren’t there yet and are not guaranteeing they will get it anytime soon because it apparently takes a long time.

Any idea on whether the changes affect the C# track too? The reason I ask is because the transfer pathway for the Java track has been updated for the new SWE program but not for the C# track.

They are dropping the C# track entirely from the new program. There will only be one track. If you are on the C# track you have until Oct 2028 to finish.

Has anyone discussed with their mentor how they’re addressing the gap from algebra in the current swe program to calculus? Are we then required to take the WGU PreCal class to switch over?

Unless someone has a copy of the old program guide, I'm not sure on all the courses being removed/added. You can compare your degree plan and see what's in there and what isn't. Not looking forward to calculus.

You have until Oct 2028 to finish the BSSWE on the track you currently have. If you’re not done before then, they’ll automatically change you over. If you’re more than 50% done, I’d just stick to the track you’re on. But yea the program change includes more math and sciences.
