u/Fit_Active3888 1d ago

Sure is, but I've never seen one with a red strip before, just completely red or completely black

LAUGH!!! ((🫱))

u/ngshafer 1d ago

It's a millipede. Totally harmless unless you try to eat it.

11

u/RudeRuby702 1d ago

There goes OP’s lunch !

7

u/fecal_spring221 1d ago

Are they poisonous to eat? Lol

12

u/Cacafuego 23h ago

Apparently so, TIL. Depending on the species, they can exude hydrogen cyanide, benzoquinones, or hydrochloric acid. Have to cook 'em just right.

u/Possible-Turnip-9734 18h ago

My friend got burned all over his face and inside the mouth because he picked one up off the ground and bit into it when he was 10. A cochin millipede for the geeks

3

u/tandempandemonium 9h ago

Jeez. How do people, even kids, look at that creature and think let me bite into it

1

u/Shaltilyena 1h ago

it's kinda orange, orange tastes good

2

u/ngshafer 15h ago

Yikes!

5

u/ngshafer 19h ago

They secrete toxic chemicals to fend off predators.

2

u/ME_LOVE_RAMBO 16h ago

Wrong. One of those fuckers bit me and it hurt like fuck for a night and my foot was swollen for a week. Fuck those little fucking fucks.

8

u/nize426 15h ago

Pretty sure you got bit by a centipede

u/glossolalienne 1d ago edited 1d ago

Fun fact: Some species of millipedes release a defensive chemical (hydrogen cyanide and benzaldehyde) that smells like maraschino cherries or almonds, when threatened.

I’ve shaken an inordinately high number of millipedes over my lifetime. 😜

Edit: This species, Red Spined millipedes (as identified in another comment), does not. Apheloria corrugata do: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apheloria_corrugata

15

u/horrorfemme15 1d ago

Who IS this diva???

40

u/sithelephant 1d ago

Nonhuman centipede.

46

u/GlitteringIsland9058 1d ago

Noncentipede millipede

Millipedes are rounded and vegetarian. Centipedes are flat and carnivorous.

u/DescriptionFancy420 1d ago

One of the cases where nature is actually really convenient by visually coding the two lol.  Shaped like friend and harmless vs shaped like nightmare with venomous chompers.

If you're like me and you grew up on the original video game, the thumping music and electronic sound effects were running through your head as you watched this thing crawl across the screne.

You also spun your invisible trackball and started firing.

1

Probably poisonous. It's not a crunchy snack.

Careful, those things can ooze an excretion that can irritate and it will stain your skin where it makes contact if it feels threatened. Called benzoquinones.

1

u/Low-Dependent6538 21h ago

Use to have these in large quantities in my house as a kid. They would fall off the ceiling and land on you occasionally, one time had a long boy fall in my cereal.

1

u/Existing-Feeling7043 21h ago

Just leave it alone>

1

u/Basic-Care-9999 20h ago

Hold on, lemme see something…onetwothreefourfivesixseveneightnineteneleventwelvethirteenfourteenfifteensixteenseventeen

1

u/UnknownPhotog_1 4h ago

Ironworm or millipede. Absolutely friendly but will curl up and spew a substance you don’t want near or on you if it feels frightened. The substance is not poisonous but it is irritable

1

u/Rasmara0789 2h ago

Where are you located? That will help give an id

1

u/dagnasty701 1d ago

red touches black. not a friend to Jack.

7

u/PineConeOPinyons 1d ago

Um... other way around. Red touches yellow will kill a fellow. Red touches black you're ok Jack.

1

u/ernie_mccracken 1d ago

I have never heard this one before. Adding to the arsenal directly next to "leaves of three let it be" and "stuff it down with some brown"

1

u/Fast_Move_9243 1d ago

it’s…a millipede

1

u/horrorfemme15 1d ago

Are you under the assumption that there is only one species.....

1

u/Fast_Move_9243 1d ago

Why would I think that? is it not a millipede? btw, op was not asking what specific species it is. would it be wrong to say it was a millipede?
