u/Confident-Skin-6462 4h ago

the door is upside down then lol

u/slippingaway83 4h ago

Or previous tenant damaged the top of the door having something screwed in or similar and this was the cheapest and easiest way for maintenance to hide the damage

Lol I did this to fix a door at work after kicking a hole in it by accident (was a hollow core). Didn’t want to tell anyone and we had a piece of thin metal that looked exactly like a kick plate… little 3M tape and door was brand new!

I once knocked out the face of a single block near the bottom of a block wall with the back of a fork lift . I was a college kid who needed this part-time job badly. One of the union guys came over and bumped the it back in place with the side of his fist and said "Go some where else , it ain't going to stay together long.". Buy the time it fell back out for the boss to see and cuss about, knowbody knew how it had happened. (Smile a little)

It’s possible that it’s a manufacturing mistake. I’m a field carpenter and to “save field time/money” the company bought our doors with all the hardware installed at a shop. We had more than a couple mistakes like this come out of a shop. Even a few closers at the floor side. The best was the one with a continuous hinge mounted on the same edge of the door as the push/pull

what if OP's world is upside down and the door is correct?

Are the locks on the opposite side of the knob?

1

u/BillNumerous5156 3h ago

No, I don't think so

1

u/jumpman44a 1h ago

Look at it as a challenge and try to kick that high.

6

u/Outside_Coffee_00 4h ago

Is your doorknob abnormally high?

2

u/BillNumerous5156 4h ago

Not to my knowledge, no

2

u/SignificantDrink3651 3h ago

exactly. those that haven't tried to install a door upside down won't even think about this until it smacks them between the eyes.

1

u/Better_Price_608 3h ago

It’s a short door.

3

u/Sugary-cupcake 4h ago

Either poor attention to detail by whoever installed the door, or maybe an inside joke among a bunch of gymnasts.

2

u/Loud_Produce4347 4h ago

Likely the top of the door was damaged and adding that was the easiest solution.

10

u/flanga 3h ago

It was meant for the Australian market.

4

u/TearRevolutionary686 4h ago

So it's a headbutt plate?

3

u/Virtuous-Patience 3h ago

Bruce Lee’s kick plate!

1

u/EMAGDNlM 4h ago

sometimes they are used to mount closers to. but with the weird thing on the right side of the door, i wonder if they just flipped it and reused it or something. likely that you need a fire rating at this door, if it is the entry to your unit. might be worth making sure the door is correct and has the right tags on the jamb side mentioning the rating.

Head butt plate

u/mrbuttheadtoyou 4h ago

Looks like a kick plate, which is usually at the bottom of a door, was installed at the top

9

u/LilAbeSimpson 4h ago

Kick plate is installed correctly. Door is installed upside down. LOL.

4

u/Pristine_Dot_5526 4h ago

Maybe sold for those for higher price who practise karate or other martial arts...

1

u/Emotional-Session656 1h ago

Hdad kick plate! now you can go to town!

10

u/Giantmeteor_we_needU 4h ago

The door is installed upside down, it's a kickboard.

5

u/Patco1981a 4h ago

Looks like a hole hider

3

u/morto00x 4h ago

I think someone installed that door upside down. That piece of metal is meant to protect it from kicks.

4

u/Cawnt 3h ago

Kickplate. The door is either upside down, or it's used to cover up unsightly holes, likely from a door closer?

2

u/smazzurco 4h ago

Could be covering holes from a previously installed closer, etc But yeah, it's just a metal plate.

2

u/bigsky54 3h ago

Kickplate. Door may have been installed upside down to match the lock set. Why waste a good door.

2

u/KraljZ 3h ago

Just kick the top of the door going forward

1

u/CupNo9760 4h ago

It's a head hitting plate, that way it hurts more when you bumb your head

1

u/Burly59 4h ago

Door is upside down

1

u/Fresh_Inspector7033 4h ago

It’s a transom window to primarily allow light. Might open for ventilation

1

u/Educational-Rule1635 4h ago

I suspect the door got reused and was the other way around in the old location

1

u/DHjam 4h ago

Is the door handle higher than normal?

Door is upside down.

1

u/I_love_pillows 4h ago

Or can just be some quirky design choice.

1

u/406mtguy 4h ago

That is an incorrectly installed door. You must pass through it on your head.

1

u/BangkokPadang 3h ago

Do you want backrooms? Because this is how you get backroooms.

1

u/1crps_warrior 4h ago

Kick plate for when you’re walking on your hands?

1

u/MistakeHeavy3457 3h ago

Maybe they installed it to cover a gap. Door was to short or uneven?

1

u/DudeInOhio57 3h ago

Your apartment is upside down.

1

u/Civil-Insurance8668 3h ago

Bruce Lee had the same on his door…

1

u/ccroy2001 3h ago

Kick plate for Kung Fu master.

1

u/GreyMead 3h ago

appears to be improperly installed kick plate

1

u/TNShadetree 3h ago

It's a raven guard.

1

u/two_beards 3h ago

A lot of people have said this is a kick plate and the door is upside down - they are wrong. This is a headbutt plate and implies that the door fitter was from Glasgow.

1

u/travelr_man 3h ago

lol they installed your door upside down.

1

u/Left_Statement9016 3h ago

Your building obviously has had outbreaks of handstanders kicking doors in.

1

u/Urabrask_the_AFK 3h ago

What’s the metal boob-like dome on the right ? A door bell?

On left I see the door lever and deadbolt.

1

u/BillNumerous5156 3h ago

It's a doorbell

1

u/Miss_Blobfish 2h ago

Are your locks on the opposite side of the door from the knob?

1

u/spannair 2h ago

When I worked for my renovation company, I was called in to repair a door that the occupant had used as an airgun target. This required a similar repair plate.

1

u/NoFaithlessness8752 2h ago

Protect the door from high kicks

1

u/AncientGuy1950 1h ago

It looks like a kick plate. The door appears to have been hung upside down.

1

u/KeyNefariousness6848 1h ago

That is the kick plate. On top in case gravity fails and we have to start walking in the ceiling.

1

u/giftedorator 1h ago

Measure twice. Cut once . And nake sure you cut the correct end.

1

u/Spin737 1h ago

Punch plate

1

u/Fredshead2 1h ago

Nice try

1

u/bk9sw 1h ago

For use with maglock?

1

u/allupinnit2winit 1h ago

Frame and door didn’t match so they put it on upside down basically. That metal plate at the top is a kick plate so you can use your foot to open the door

1

u/kylebob86 54m ago

lol your door is upside down

u/Fantastic-Dirt-9678 39m ago

Head Butt Plate.

1

u/phantomandy121 37m ago

Upside door. Kick plate should be on the bottom.

Worked a construction job once where the door manufacturer made about 20 doors wrong.

Short term solution was to install them upside down… long term solution, the door manufacturer had to remake the doors on their dime. Cost them over $30,000 plus the contractor got damages for costs associated with changing the doors out after they were remade.

My Chinese immigrant father installed a set of double entrance doors , with simple raised wood panels for the living room. Not familar with the "American style", he installed the doors upside down. We've never corrected him. And he lived here for 48 years until he passed at the age of 92.

A kick plate for high steppers.

It looks like someone put the door in upside down..

u/AdaTHADwagon960 4h ago

Ventilation duct. Some older buildings have these. So that the air conditioner or natural air can reach all of the rooms. Also quite common in Slavic engineering

u/Appropriate-Row4534 4h ago

Its the part of the door the previous owner used to attach their sex swing to. Helped support the weight.
