Seems like a highly replaceable mug with something cute the next season they come around. Mug break. It happens.
Instead we have her boyfriend, a human freaking out and incredibly distressed about accidentally breaking a mug that was on an end cap 18 months ago.
People are breakable and irreplaceable. PEOPLE should be handled with care.
People should apologize for errors and try to make it right (which OP has gone above and beyond for and so have strangers), but beyond a reasonable effort and still no grace and understanding, the replacement to search for it a new girlfriend.

Kintsugi only looks good when it's done by people who have worked hard to get good at it. And usually it's not a useable foodware item afterwards.

I’d be very wary of any DIY epoxy or resin based kits. Theres a lot that can go wrong, from the user mixing the wrong proportions or not fully curing the epoxy, and kits that don’t clearly explain.
But here’s a video on the stuff usually available on the market.

My mom broke a plate I decorated (one of those ceramic diy event stores where they kiln fire for you after you paint it). She was so upset thinking she ruined something I loved. I was a tiny bit sad about the plate but incredibly sad she felt so bad. I assured her it was ok, but she couldn’t let it go until she glued it back together and framed it with a picture of us from when I was little. NOW I love it, because she made it special to me.
All this to say, I wholeheartedly agree that repairing the item so it can be repurposed is absolutely the way to go. It becomes a new treasured item that is a physical reminder of the love someone has for you.

I didn’t say they were.
And kintsugi pieces are only food safe if gold or silver is used and then urushi lacquer is applied and allowed to fully cure. A lot of kintsugi pieces are not food safe.

This is also the mug I found. Same line, so the shape will be very similar, but the color and embossed shape are different. Looks to be a limited production run, so doubtful you'll find the same mug. Dishes break. She'll get over it on her own time. It sucks, but its a good lesson to learn that physical possessions are temporary. Not something YOU should teach her, mind you. Love her, be gentle and apologetic, and if you've got a close bond, everything'll be okay.

I've seen east-asian ceramic repair techniques where the cracks are highlighted with gold. Very beautiful.
Edit: Apparently it's a Japanese technique called kintsugi.

Clear JB weld will be good even for hot drinks. It is for a repaired handle at least! Not food safe but non toxic when cured.

Sometimes things are meant to be broken. We can live our lives comfortable with what we know, but sometimes life/random chance can change that. Maybe your friend was meant to find a new mug. Y'all can adapt, or learn from finding a niche mug, but I am sure you will look back at this memory with fondness.

How is this perfectly average mug “irreplaceable”?!? It says made in china at the bottom… there is a factory somewhere that made thousands of these at some point in time… it’s very replaceable. Also if your girlfriend is going to be upset that a ceramic cup might break she should switch to a more durable material.
