Whoever decided that accessible parking spots should be painted like this, 2 regular sized parking stalls with an access area in between every other one, instead of just making them each 1 1/2 size of a regular parking stall, needs to be taken out back and dealt with.

1) People (and I’m sorry, but Boomers are THE worst at this) don’t recognize the access aisles as such. They see it as extra space for shopping carts, motorcycles, and yes, even parking their own vehicles in it. My local Walmart just repainted their parking lot, and it’s very literally become unusable for me. EVERY. SINGLE. ACCESS LANE. is FULL of carts. I’ve complained multiple times, and beyond them saying “we’ll have someone check the parking lot more often” nothing is helping. My local hospital had to repaint the access aisles from the stripes like in this photo, to big giant yellow Xs so it would get through peoples heads that you can’t park there.

2) It actually makes half of the parking spots very literally unusable for me if I am doing any kind of shopping. If I have to back into the parking spot so that the access aisle is on my drivers side, it makes my trunk inaccessible. That is where I store my shopping basket, and that is where I put the things I’ve shopped for. I cannot put it in my back seat, because half of it is taken up by half my chair, and the part of the seat behind the drivers side isn’t usable because I have to put the drivers seat all the way back, and lay it all the way down in order to get my chair in and out. And the front passenger seat is unusable because that’s where the other half of my chair goes, plus my backpack, purse, and whatever else I need.

At least when the spots were just 1 1/2 the size of a regular spot, abled people saw that as MY parking spot. Not just extra space. I don’t know if any disabled people were actually consulted before this change was made, but it just pisses me off so much. So many times I have to circle a parking lot over and over again until a spot opens up, and this just makes it so much worse.

so i just received my new chair! and it’s lovely. it actually fits my width and everything is great except it feels SO weird..

i’ve been using the same hand-me-down ottobock for the past 6 years and it’s definitely not a super active chair, and i don’t consider this xenon to be super active either. but the difference is like, blaring.

the backrest height is lower (actually to my level of injury now), with gekko rims and marathon plus tyres. i even got scissor brakes fitted for free.

i’m wondering how long it’ll take me to get used to this chair? i’m not someone who can freely do wheelies as my back injury is weird due to my scoliosis, and i can’t really go back to my old chair because it’s so old and ill-fitting.

Ok so as long as I’ve used a wheelchair my cat has absolutely adored sitting in it. I love it because she’s always right next to me and I want her to have a comfy spot too! It does get a little rough when I have to pee in the middle of the night because she’s all black and blends in to the cushion. But we persevere.

Anywho after a year long saga including four different wheelchair cushions, an asshole atp, and a shit ton of money out of pocket, I got the roho contour select cushion, which combined with a relatively supportive backrest has almost fixed my extreme lifelong hip pain. (I have severe complex hip dysplasia and have had a million osteotomies so sitting is usually very painful for me).

I love my roho cushion. However my sweet stupid kitty can’t figure out how to step on it. Every time she tries and the air readjusts she gets confused and gives up. I know that cats can poke holes in roho cushions but idk I trust her and want her to have her seat back. Has anyone had any success convincing their cats that roho cushions are safe?

Obviously a properly fit wheelchair is more important than one that functions as a cat bed. But I’m greedy and want it all. Would love any advice!

Recently had to reconfigure my chair and the dump increased a lot. My clothing guards were already worthless before but now they do absolutely nothing to stop rubbing. I quickly realized I have no idea how to get new ones made or where to reach out about this.

My ATP company was acquired sometime between February and now and the new ATP doesn’t even have a patient file on me and wants me to travel a long distance to their office where as the old ones came to me.

Hi! TLDR below. I'm going to have my very first appointment to get measured and discuss wheelchairs in a couple weeks, and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. I've done some searching on this sub already to try to answer my questions and learned a little bit, but I thought I'd just go ahead and make a post since everyone here is so nice (I have issues with brain fog so parsing information can be difficult). If this appointment doesn't go smoothly there isn't another one until November, so I'm feeling a lot of pressure to do this right the first time.

First question has to do with picking a vendor. The rehab hospital asked if I wanted to have CareLinc or National Seating & Mobility be my vendor. I looked both up on Google maps. CareLinc has 2 relatively local shops (15-20 min away) with 4.5+ star ratings and over 2500 reviews. There's an NSM shop about 5-10 min from me that has 4.5 stars but only has 10 reviews. How do I go about making this decision? Does anyone have more insight on these companies? I know NSM is a national chain that has independently owned shops so the quality of service varies, but that also means I can find a shop almost anywhere I want to travel domestically (does that even matter though?).

Second question has to do with features and support needs. They said the OT will want to discuss this at the appointment, but I feel like I need to prepare because it's hard for me to process new information quickly. It would be less than ideal if they have to explain everything day of. Can anyone help me find reading material about wheelchair features, various support needs, deciding between power chair and manual with power add on? I wish my provider could just send me a nice bulleted list or something haha.

I want to also just thank this sub for existing because I've been combing it for the last week since I got approved for the appointment, trying to educate myself and also feel inspired by the lovely posters and commenters! ♡ Any tips you all have for me are also welcome.

I'm located in Michigan, USA and have Medicaid. I'm 6' tall and 300lbs. I have a dynamic disability, so I can walk but in such a limited capacity that I'm not able to be independent. I'm hoping a chair will help me participate in life! I'm not sure what kind of chair would suit me, but I think a lightweight manual with joystick power add on could be best.

Spent all day waiting in for a new set of Schwalbe One Tyres and they've sent me Schwalbe Marathons by mistake.

Not only are Schwalbe Marathons a god-awful, overrated abomination of a tyre, but it means I'll have to wait in again for the correct tyres to be sent out, and I don't know how TF they expect me to send these tyres back to them 😡

Hi. I posted two days back about getting a refurbished wheelchair for a reputable company today and how I was worried something would be wrong. Yeah something was wrong, as some of you pointed out that the wheelchair in the photo was too narrow to be 44 but I still trusted the company and thought they would not make mistakes bigger than few centimeters if any at all. (I best fit wheelchair 40-42 width). So today the chair arrived and it's ten centimeters smaller than it was written on the website and also I ordered through phone and specified that I want the 44cmnwide wheelchair. So I immediately called them, they said they will try to figure out how the mistake happened and call me back in two hours, meanwhile I can look on their website for another wheelchair and they will ofc give me the price of this wheelchair plus money on top minus from the price of the wheelchair I choose.

I just really wanted to have a wheelchair already and be more free, now I have to deal with waiting for transport and also doing research once again. I try not to have mental breakdown over it and looking at other wheelchairs on their website. But this situation still really sucks.

At least they are way nicer than two companies I tried unsuccessfully to borrow wheelchair form two weeks ago

I’m waiting to get my custom and need a chair to use for about 8-10 weeks. I do not have anyone to push me and need to self propel. My budget is 500 and at the very most 600. I’m plus size but don’t want a massive chair. I need something easy to push. Would love some suggestions. I would prefer to shop on Amazon since I have student prime. I’m a college student and want a chair that hopefully doesn’t look like a hospital chair lol. Idk if anyone has some good suggestions.

I’m getting the chair for seizure auras, diagnosed hyper mobility (suspected hEDS by my doctor but am moving states before I was able to get seen by a specialist), and partly for fatigue issues. Don’t know if that helps with figuring out what would be good. I haven’t done well with big theme park wheelchairs since they are too big and such.

I’m starting PT again soon but it won’t be for a while due to needing to switch doctors and get a new pt referral.

I hosted recently about funding my own chair after only being offered a hospital chair by the NHS, and after exploring some options that were suggested here but not being able to get funding, I've decided to use a loan I took recently that I still have some of.

So I went to a local dealer to be measured and would like to know what you all think of the Icon 60. I'm leaning towards the Argon II but they offered me the icon 60 as a cheaper option and made it sound like a valid alternative.

As I'm unlikely to get an NHS chair for a few years as I'm ambulatory (EDS) until I need to use it indoors more often, would the Icon 60 be a good option to last 3-4 years? It's likely to be quite beaten up on rough pavements and I plan to travel with it sometimes.

Any experiences of Icon 60 or Argon II long term for a part time user are apreciated.

I went to get measured for my first chair today and have decided on black so I'm not stuck with a colour that doesn't match everything, and so It's relatively easy to patch up scratches.

Part of my reason for choosing black is that I love rainbow and black together and I love my daughter's suggestion of reflective rainbow holographic stickers so any suggestions please? I have non rainbow holo stickers on my walker but they were already there when I bought it.

I'm also open to other minimalist rainbow options. I'm considering a bit of hockey stick tape and resisting letting my other daughter, who is an artist, loose with nail varnish!

Been following this sub for a while and my wife planned a trip to see family in Portugal and took TAP Air Portugal. With my condition, I dreaded it and since my last trip, my disability has progressed. Tried to rent a motorized wheelchair and none were available. So my wife gave me the green light and allowed me to buy one. Took all the advice from this sub and it was looking good. But when we landed they told us they didn’t have my chair ready at the plane door and it got shipped off to the terminal (you get off at the runway in Lisbon). 2 hours pass and they finally found it. Pretty devastated. Had it less than a month and had to hunt for a rental cause the (manual one) they gave me was useless. Reported the incident, complained to the airline and airport and they still won’t take the blame till they do a thorough evaluation of the incident which takes 14-21 days.

I can't afford a wheelchair van so I installed a ramp on my Murano. The ramp was from Walmart and didn't have ratchets so I used bungee cords. Unfortunately the bungee cords gave out while my daughter was driving on the highway. This is what we found when we backed up.

I highly recommend you get a ramp with four ratchets to secure all four points of your wheelchair!

ETA: My apologies for not being accurate in my post. They added a heavy-duty hitch to my Murano and the ramp was installed on the hitch ... I absolutely did not bungee cord the ramp to the car!! That would have been beyond stupid. I used bungee cords to keep the wheelchair on the ramp. It worked for a while, but I took a shortcut because I was in a lot of pain and didn't do the bungee cords correctly. I learned my lesson and got an electronic ramp installed on the hitch. It has 4 ratchets with hooks that secure the 4 points of my wheelchair (rods above the wheels). It is now secure and my new wheelchair will not suffer such a fate!

And I am not able to lift even 25 lbs so even though the wheelchair was foldable and "lightweight" I could not lift it and put it in my car ... thus the need for a ramp.

And we backed up on the side of the highway, not on the highway itself!! It wasn't very far.

So I’ve been thinking about getting an electric wheelchair lately because of chronic fatigue syndrome, and I honestly didn’t realize how many things there are to consider.

I’ve been trying to learn more about wheelchairs, and I keep seeing people mention different things that are important.

Some people say comfort is a huge factor because if you’re sitting in it for hours, an uncomfortable chair can really cause pain and make things worse.

Others mention things like traveling with it, taking it on planes, battery life, weight, portability, and just how easy it is to use in everyday life.

I’m still pretty new to all of this and trying to figure out what actually matters before choosing one.

For those who use an electric wheelchair, what are the things you think are most important?

Is there anything you didn’t really think about before getting one, but later realized was a big deal?

I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences and any advice you have.

Anyone that has a folding wheelchair with a hard backrest (fx. the Jay j3 - or something like it) that is willing to give me some insight on how or if it even can fold? And just all in all your experience with having it?

I'm looking into different options and it being able to fold is a really important feature (either side to side or seat/front fold)

So my temporary wheelchair was destroyed on a public transit bus in my state (California) because the bus driver left my chair unhooked in one corner after a stop, resulting in me going flying into the lift and my wheelchair crashing into me as we drove around 45 mph. This accident broke my arm rest and warped my frame pretty bad. Now I can't push my chair independently and my Quickie doesn't come until October to November, but im in high school in the next city over and can't safely take the bus without my chair.

The model is a Breezy 510 which is discontinued, but it was donated to me so I don't know the old price. I was looking at similar/comparable chairs according to Google, but they all listed around $900-$1,400 which obviously I can't afford. I want to ask for maybe $800 and get a secondhand chair, but I'm not sure.

So my question is, how much do I ask for? Does anyone know the original price on medical websites? This isn't really a legal thing just between me and the county, and I don't want to have to take it too far.

I got a rep at NuMotion to send over the order sheet (not yet placed, waiting for Dr. / Insurance stuff to happen) for my new Tilite X and they currently have it config'd with the integrated push handles.

I'm debating having them do the no handle option as I don't want/intend to have any one assist me (and in the one in million blue moon they do, I'm fine with them just using my shoulders). I also just like the look of chairs without handles way more.

On the other hand, I do like to put my back pack straps on them, but that such a pain to do anyways and I'm currently researching better options. I know there is the flip down option, but I'm not sure they'd be strong enough for my bag and still don't like the look of them.

Anyone here that doesn't have push handles and regret it?

They retarred my street.I didn't notice.I got off the curb and then I had this sinking feeling. My wife couldn't help me. It took two really strong guys to pull me back. We took a different route and there were the breadcrumbs of my experience trailing behind to the next corner. We walked and rolled till we were sure I wasn't tracking anymore. What an eye opener.
