The real goal should be functional zero homelessness where the safety nets are so efficient that the turnover to getting housing is in a single day.

Everyone bitching and complaining about Data Centers being built in their areas can't be bothered to attend a town council meeting where the votes to allow the data centers are being had.
I will say this in their defence, town council meetings are almost always during working hours so unless you're a pensioner, unemployed or are able to take leave, most of the working population can't attend these meetings.
Also, my rural/suburban town I live in doesn't exactly have a lot going on in it that's super pressing. The biggest thing in the last year we all had to consider is scraping together a few thousand dollars after sponsorships to build a new community shelter in the park that can be used for structured community events instead of pitching tents when needed.
Whether I followed the last year of community meetings was of little consequence in my life compared to civil liberties eroding and a mounting concern about the inability to feed, house, and cloth my children because someone keeps fucking with tariffs and making terrible decisions about the nation's economy in general. My village president and board don't have anything to do with the fact the local Piggly Wiggly has seen food prices raise significantly, doubling on many items.
Localities have less power and are less sovereign. Obviously they’d get less attention. Can’t fault people for being more interested in a national healthcare mandate than what a street should be named.
Local government has a major impact on your everyday life. If you think its just "what should we name a street" I am begging you to attend some town halls in your area.
The states have the ability to shape their own healthcare policy using the Medicaid money given by DC. The federal government gives the baseline, but as you can probably figure, Medicaid is different in Tennessee than what it is in Minnesota.
Your local politics is also who fills your potholes, where you send your 311 calls, who controls your police departments, and your buses.
The federal government is important in effecting your life, but when it comes to your day to day, that’s your state and county government.
Utility prices, street redesigns, road closures, property taxes, parks, bike lanes, greenways, stream quality, childcare availability, school funding, commercial and residential zoning, policing policies… the list goes on.
It matters more than you think. The current housing price crisis in the western world is in no small part due to local municipalities issuing zoning ordinances that choke the housing supply

Yeah, it can be interesting. Especially in the current environment. Economic turmoil sucks, but it is also the most interesting time to pay attention to economics. IMO we're currently at the point where something is going to break, and it's interesting listening to all the armchair economists try and explain what part of the economy is imminently going to break and cause a domino effect.
