I remember something similar is what killed World of Tanks for me.
Their buiseness strategy was- you add 8 tiers of new tanks as a new branch and connect it to the old branches. Generally, you have to grind a lot to get past tier 7, and anything past tier 7 loses more money than it makes so you have to buy a premium tank (which makes x3 the money) or play a couple of the tiers 5-6 on repeat to sustain a tier 8+ tank.
But... then you also have to reseach the tank bits for the tank to be at peak condition, which is the level at which is is balanced.
Around the time the british were added is where they lost their marbles.
Suddenly new tank branches had no connections midway through. You used to have shortcuts midway through from already developed branches, like unlocking the Panther and the Tiger from the same tank. Or just new branches used to be added at tier 5 to an already existing tank. When the british tanks arrived suddenly all branches would start at tier 3-4 with no connections or shorcuts.
But, to make things worse they would also make the researchable equipment of the tank non-compatible with other tanks. So, like, in old times you could unlock the D25T in the KV-1S, and then use it in a plethora of tanks. Now? No, sorry. You have to research everything in full again because of some bullshit D25Tbis designation or something like that.
And then... they wanted people to really really pay to skip the grind. So they made it so each new branch had a super dogshit tank that was utterly unplayable, and with an absolutely hellish grind, before getting to the enjoyable meta tanks that were afterwards.
All of this was bad, but what really broke the game is that they kept adding new branches non-stop, so those issues got magnified by 10. If you played fair and square, even if you had bought a premium tank, unless you paid to skip some lines here and there by the time you would reach tier 8 in whatever line was new 1-2 new branches would have poped up, and the tanks in your tree were nerfed into oblivion.
Hell by the time I got to the top of the british tree the top of the tree was being removed because it was considered so dogshit and non-historical they would add something else instead to it.
Balancing was also shamelessly market driven... and on top of it flatout bad.

The core gameplay of War Thunder isn't even that good. Maps are dogshit, balancing is ahistorical and vibes based, BRs are compressed as fuck, gamemodes incentivize spawn camping, naval is dead as a gamemode.
War Thunder is genuinely awful past like 6.7. Everything before that only works because the median speed of every tank is comparatively slow, and even then, there are exceptions.

World of Tanks in like 2016 used to be so good. Grindy and of course there was pay to win back then too but nothing like today. Used to play the living daylights out of that game.
The tech tree grind was crazy but I didn't necessarily mind it as long as the tank I was playing was decent. For me the crew leveling grind was far worse, and then if you wanted to change or experiment in anyway you would have to pay money to remove perks and as such if I remember correctly, just horrible.

Like my GOD the game is just aggressively unfun and blatantly pay to win (faster than other players). God help you if you run out of money/gear, you’re basically cooked for the entire wipe because they put a fuckass arbitrary timer on the free kit mode (scav runs) which means you ALSO can’t learn the maps effectively without dying over and over and over and over losing your gear.

55
u/CorgiConqueror May 22 '26
This would actually be peak ngl
50
u/BMTaeZer May 22 '26
It works perfectly with Batman being non-lethal, too. You can put the baddies in jail time after time, they lose status and cred on the streets, but eventually they'll be back and looking for revenge.
31
u/FastingForward1618 May 21 '26
How would you imagine that happening? Are thugs moving up the ranks or villains? Do you make villains by doing certain environmental finishers? Like joker in an acid vat? I'm curious how you would envision the nemesis system in Batman
58
u/Bluejay929 May 22 '26
I don’t think you need the Joker in a Year One game at all. He’s not a “start of career” villain. The most I’d do would be having Batman fail to save someone that falls into the vat, fans know the guy becomes Joker, and if you make a sequel it set up a perfect main villain.
Batman doesn’t need fifty villains to fight one after the other to tell a good Batman story, and if you lock it to “You are Batman at the very start of his career” then you have the perfect hand-wave explanation for there to be more grounded, less fantastical enemies (Clayface, Joker, Solomon Grundy, etc.) and for Batman to discover various techniques and new gadgets.
If I were to make it, it’d focus almost entirely on the Falcone Crime Family for the main story. They’re grounded villains, with personal stakes to Batman if you want to make them ultimately responsible for his parents’ death, and more conducive to a nemesis system where goons rise up the ranks after proving themselves by defeating the Batman but wouldn’t become a legend for it because he’s not exactly The Batman yet.
You could lock the top end of the gang (Falcone and direct lieutenants) for the story and once Batman defeats them it adds more to the end-game where now the goons that beat you can rise up to lead the gang. If you beat them with an electric gadget, then they could come back bragging about having a rubber suit made to negate it kinda like Orcs could develop a fear of/resistance to things like fire in the Mordor games.
Mechanically, it can work exactly the same as the Nemesis system in Mordor, just instead of “dying” Batman gets “knocked out” or “critically injured” and escapes. Is that part pretty gamey? Absolutely, but it’s a superhero video game so I think you can get away with a certain amount of “it’s this way so you have a game to play” as long as you don’t play that card too often.
Could even go live-service with it and release DLC every year or two that adds another gang to Gotham Batman would have to deal with, like Penguin’s gang, or the League of Shadows, or the Riddler.

Nice!
Alfred, drives up in a disguised car when you are getting wreaked.
The cops could act like a gang as well and helping them in their raids expands the peaceful portion of Gotham.
3
u/WatcherOfDogs May 22 '26
While I absolutely agree with you that the joker doesn't need to be depicted in an early batman-esque story (and frankly should in this type of game as the Joker is overrepresented in Batman stories and would oversaturate the game), he is established to be active in Batman's story early on. The Long Halloween, the critically acclaimed story that is the origin for two-face and deals with the end of the falcone family, is intended to be a retcon for the previous Batman: Year Two, and it features Joker prominently.
To piggyback off of your idea, I would say making the game themed around this story would be cool. The game should absolutely be around having Batman take down the Falcone crime family, that's brilliant, but also introduce the narrative element within that story that Batman's actions as a vigilante heralded a change in Gotham from syndicated crime to costumed villainy. I think this would be awesome because it can even be used mechanically, where advanced level goons can become proper villains by acquiring gimmicks and tech through your encounters with them. Instead of just having the goons return with a rubber suit that resists shock, have a chance that the goons receives some lightening scars, stun gloves, and rename him from "Jimmy the Snitch" to "Electrotherapy" or some such. It would also provide the potential for escalating threats and an explanation for post-game content, as he goes from specifically taking out important pushers and made-men to having to manage his ever expanding and changing Rogues' Gallery (which is what the Nemesis System should be called in this fantasy game imo). To make it clear, I dont think this game would need any of the established and fantastical villains from Batman's Canon. But that the random goons could evolve into small-time villains that are evocative of Batman's more extreme and later antagonists. Do you think this is interesting? Or is it too outside of your vision? You kind of unlocked my imagination with your premise lol.

8

It really wasn't that bad. The lootbox thing was shit, but the devs eventually came out and said that WB forced their hand, and journalists kinda blew the necessity of the lootboxes out of the water. The only thing that really sucked about the end-game was just it's length.

Honestly not OP, but a game that (although I don't remember if P2W) had something like that to me, was the MMO Granado Espada.
In this game you create 3 characters that you control, and they are your family, you give them names and can define each one's class, so you can walk around controlling a Tank, a Healer and a DPS.
153
u/arguingsolipsism May 21 '26
I always hoped MMOs companion systems would graduate into a full party system like old school RPGs but I feel like some of the early attempts were so jank that future developers just avoided it.
9
u/Stock_Trash_4645 May 21 '26
Funny part is Arena Net and Guild Wars more-or-less perfected it back in the mid-2000s with heroes. So much so that actual full-human parties are reserved for the high-end, speed-clearing groups.
Way, way back in the halcyon days of the game, team composition and human players were crucial in the mid-late game - the ai henchmen were laughably bad, unable to have upgraded runes or weapons, plus with outdated skills and builds that had either been power crept over or skill balancing updates over time had weakened.
So with the third expansion they released a slew of customizable npc companions called “heroes” who could use any skill the player could - minus PvE only skills (which were few and far between then) and you could customize their equipment load out too.
At first players were limited to just 3 heroes per human player in the group. Casual PvE became playing with 1-2 other people and the social death of the game started.
The next expansion added more heroes. You could now add 7 heroes, making all but two areas of the game “soloable” by a full hero party (and skilled players can get around only having 8/12 slots filled for the Deep or Urgoz’s Warren.)
Before maintenance mode kicked in full gear with Guild Wars 2’s release, they added Mercenaries - a new layer to the customization of Heroes, allowing you to purchase ‘slots’ that you could store a hero version of your playable character on. Essentially you could have a whole party of your characters together - for a price, of course. But honestly a reasonable one, as the purchase wasn’t necessary, was really cosmetic, and only helped with gimmick builds that required a full team of specific professions. Since most promary professions only have 3-4 total that that can be found in-game, it meant that you only needed 1-3 if you were planning a specific build, like Mesmers or and all-Paragon group.
Also the ai was fucking nasty with its ability to interrupt skills and can be exploited to maintain annoying to cast skills like “Blood is Power” on your entire team.
It also just came out on iOS and Android this week in limited regions and is so jank on mobile in the early stages, so you can try it out for free (ads in loading screens sadly) right now. Players with accounts on PC can login on mobile with access to their full account too!
5
u/Acceptable-Device760 May 21 '26
I mean... At that point why would it be a MMO?
I get that people want to do their thing in game however at the point of all out parties the devs have no reason to expend all the money required to make and run a MMO.(Dragons dogma being the elephant in the room)

u/OsseousDraws May 21 '26

Lol I was wondering if someone would ask. Anyway here goes a mediocre explanation:
The game is nostale. Its a free to play MMO. You start of the game as a general guy, after a while you can choose a class (mage, warrior, archer the classic stuff). Here comes the interesting system.
When you choose a class you get a profession level (apart from your basic one), based on the profession level you can equip a specialist card (you get the option to acquire these as you progress through the game). The specialist card literally gives you an entire new set of skills, different from the base of your class. It also changes your element affinity (and enemies have certain element resistances) so you can just leave combat change your specialist and fight again if you need to, for better dmg or different skills. Each specialist card also has their own level which allows you to get stats you choose.
This system is insanely fun to play around, but the game itself is just genuinely so so bad, that I have been looking for alternatives for years and have found no games who even come close to using a similar thing. Info dump over.

I'm glad someone already pointed this out. Genuinely expected some peak new niche mechanic that's rarely, if ever explored but got snubbed by OP
For anyone who also feels robbed by OP, here's some ACTUALLY unique mechanics, that are sadly likely won't be seen for a long time.
SiN Gold has objectives systems. Which isn't all that impressive until 1) you realise it's an old ass game, came out before HL1 and 2) this was a boomer shooter, not an RPG. But that's not exactly what makes em special, infact most objectives seemingly don't do much if you do them or not. However, a very few DO open a NEW LEVEL to play! Yeah, a NEW level. It's like, a choice with consequences, in a boomer shooter game? How cool is that? Don't get your hopes up, it doesn't happen often, like 3-4 times, and I think not all of these are tied to objectives done, some you just have to find hidden exit etc. But it's still insanely cool, and rarely done! Too bad that Wages of Sin expansion, and Sin Episodes Emergency gutted this idea entirely, and Episodes Emergency failed to make enough money to get it's 8 episodes(devs promised a nine episodes game, we only got one episode sadly )
Spore, the entire game is an insanely unique mechanics experience, and just like MMO OP mentioned, this game also technically died by greed, by EA greed... Being able to evolve a species from cell to space stage is still something that was never truly replicated. Although we do have two promising fan games(which I forgot the names off... One was hyper realistic take on spore, while another almost felt like a ripoff from art style, but hopefully it's safe from EA wrath because dev was already making water stage). Edit: Elysian Eclipse is the name of the second Spore fan game I forgot the name of. And the first one was called Thrive. So keep an eye out for both of them if you want more games like Spore, because one day, we might get out wish! Edit 2: Also remembered another game. Dungeon Siege 1. It had a few rarely or newer done mechanics, such as 8 playable characters in a party, in Diablo like gameplay(and all 8 are proper characters, not just summons and aren't temporary companions). Map that you can explore from farm to final area, with zero loading screens. And you can just kill/disband main character from the party and keep playing till the ending, which is unique too
Also feel free to mention your own game with super unique gameplay or mechanics that we'll likely won't see for a long time realised again.

u/FlightCapableFelon May 21 '26
Shadow of War/Modor's Nemesis System giving you an evolving roster of enemy champions personalized to your game was an absolutely incredible mechanic. Bosses remembering the last time you fought them, grunts leveling up into captains from killing you, and tons of other cool stuff.
Which is why it's a damn shame Warner Bros managed to copyright the system. Naturally they've done nothing with it since.
76
u/sample_text_01 use POV correctly please (or else) May 21 '26
Genuinely fuck being able to copyright this. Companies should have a stranglehold over \*game mechanics.* If they had their way we’d have shit like Nintendo copyrighting the ability to jump
23
u/NoosFraba May 21 '26
"you mean to say.. People that wouldnt like your in-game actions aren't allowed to be angry with you later?" that's what they've seemingly copywritten.. Basically a modular storyline element. As rational as copywriting repeatable quests

Didn’t Nintendo already copyright the concept of Pokémon? Like, collecting magical critters into balls and sending them out to fight for you? Specifically in an attempt to ruin Palworld?
Edit: it wasn’t a copyright, but a patent, and it’s currently still being actively fought against and rejected by law. Nintendo’s patent on creature summoning and fighting is still not real for now

u/Own_Cup9970 Le Tart May 21 '26
copyright system can be cheesed by correct renaming and some creative changes. only reason this system wasn't cheesed was that it's probably too much work to do for too low pay-off
14
u/Wingman5150 May 21 '26
I'm a game developer, did a course on game design which covered specifically this case, and yeah, that's why.
It's not just easy to cheese, it's hard not to. You would essentially have to copy the nemesis system 1 to 1 for it to be a problem.
And I believe warner bros even said themselves exactly what you guessed: It's not worth the effort for the value it brings, that's why they never went back to it.

Nemesis System was so fun. But it had a major downside. It rewarded you being shit at the game in order to get the more interesting stuff. And some interactions were locked to the highest difficulty. Which on its own would make sense. But the highest difficulty came with such changes as "everything hits for most of your HP", "everything has two billion HP" and "every captain will adapt to all your moves except the one that sucks".
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed playing with it for a while. The idea that an enemy could haunt you between both yours and their deaths is amazing. I just wish I didn't have to make my game experience much worse for it to happen

I still love Spore tbh.
Also to add my own example, the game Heroes and Generals had a game mode where some players (general) where in charge of crossing what forces to commit to what objectives in a WW2 map. This included infantry, recon, tanks, ... (a battlefield clone in many ways).
Thing is those battles were fought by players which added an extra dimension to it because losing a tank had more of an effect outside the game itself. This opened some interesting dynamics, for example, having cheap infantry dying to kill a tank wasn't just going neutral on a scoreboard, but a decent strategic win (at least it felt that way the real effects were diffuse and I had a feeling it was all sort of faked behind the scenes)
I would love an actual proper game with this mechanic, having a shooter that also functions as a grand strategy game without being plagued by p2w micro transaction (or being closed all of a sudden).

For the longest time, there wasn't anything quite like the original Digimon World: here's your monster, how you raise it will determine what it turns into next (if anything), here's this world that slowly opens up further while you raise your monster which unlocks new mechanics for raising your monster. Eventually, your monster "dies" and you start the process all over.
Extremely unique and engaging, if opaque, game loop - it really captured the feeling of taking a V-pet and expanding it into a full-fledged video game. Absolutely loved it as a kid.
Then Digimon World 2 came out and it was just a very generic, straight-forward JRPG. Virtually all other monster-raising games are otherwise Pokemon or Pokemon clones with a very different gameplay style. The Digimon franchise didn't return to this style of game until Digimon World Re:Digitize over a decade later and it wasn't originally released outside of Japan (mod community has since addressed this). Digimon World: Next Order was finally released as a Playstation exclusive in 2017, I don't own a Playstation so I didn't play it until it was released on the Switch in 2023. Solid game, but honestly lacks some of the magic that made the original so good.
If there's anything that scratches the itch of the OG Digimon World as well as the original Digimon World, I've yet to meet it. Still, at least Next Order makes an honest attempt at it.

There's a set of default skills/abilities that come from your race and class, and then additional skills you can aquire from professions, factions, conditions (vampirism/lycanthropy).

u/Theshinysnivy8 I want to FUCK (and marry) winter wyvern from dota May 21 '26
That sounds like eso's skill system
Every class has 3 skill trees, but there's also a bunch of skill trees from other parts of the game that have nothing to do with your starting class (Like 2 handed weapons, vampirism, the fighter guild etc). And you're also allowed to swap 2 of your class skill trees with those of another class. Then you can use 10 skills from any of the trees you want at a time.
And I'm pretty sure multiple other mmos do this (Final fantasy I've heard something similar). I don't know man, sounds like you just haven't played enough games in the genre

That kinda just sounds like multi-classing
Which is very much a thing in DnD, so Tiny Tina's Wonderlands might interest you?

I do love the idea of gacha systems. Spend a resource. See a cool information. Get randomised characters you can play as. Only games I can think of that don't tie kind of system to MTX are Xenoblade.

u/Asherley1238 May 21 '26
I’ve had this idea for a gacha where you have to work to affect what the pulls give you.
It’s inspired by the pokemon mod for Minecraft cobblemon; In cobblemon you can make pokesnacks that attract pokemon, and when you’re making them you can add ingredients that increase the probabilities of specific types of pokemon. This includes egg groups, rarity, sizes, and gender.
I think you could make a game that uses a system like that to make gacha feel like a rewarding and interactive mechanic

u/Gentleman-Bird May 21 '26
Warframe too, where there are loot boxes (relics) with a randomized pool of rewards, and you play a mission to open them.
And when your entire squad opens their relic, you can choose which reward to take. So if one person gets lucky and unboxes the rare thing, everyone in the squad can take a copy of the rare thing. You can also play an endless mission to keep opening them for as long as you want.
11
u/Shayden998 Pre-evolved Transbian May 21 '26
Even then, it's kind of a debatable case since, unlike with actual gacha, you can just... directly buy whatever relic items you want for platinum, which you can earn completely for free by just trading relic drops you don't want.
It's closer to, like, a Diablo loot drop system than gacha.
7
u/wiciu172 May 21 '26
Well for stuff to be on a market in warframe somebody needs to get it from a relic
3
u/Shayden998 Pre-evolved Transbian May 21 '26
True, but the same can be said for, say, an item you can get from an end-game dungeon in Diablo or the like. I feel like there's a degree of nuance that distinguishes gacha from regular RNG and I think Warframe's relics hovering around an area where the line's blurry...
If that makes sense...
→ More replies (1)3
u/Putrid-Cat5368 May 21 '26
Also Warframe is pretty p2fast. Since you can buy platinum packs, and then use that platinum to get Warframe and weapon components on the market from other players. Also, vault bundles are like 60€ if you want to speed the process a shit ton whenever they release a Prime from the vault.
Have to say, its a very friendly game to f2p players, the grind is not THAT massive and you have relatively fast progress, if you really want to see new weapons you can unlock like 2-3 new ones every day even at pretty late game over M20.
16
u/Desocupadification May 21 '26
Holocure has a gacha for unlocking more cgaracters and is a completely free game. It is fan-made, but the people behind are professionals and it's a bit if a joke how the main dev(?) always refuses payment for it.
The core game is like Vampire Survivors, but with a Hololive coating and, of course, there is so much more to it. And even if you don't really know anything about Hololive it is still an pretty fun game that holds extremely well.

YES. I love gacha, even if I'm not a gambler, it's just the whimsical joy of opening gifts and kinder surprises. But I hate microtransactions and refuse to play games like this. There aren't any that are just predator-ing the fuck out of FOMO. I want pretty characters and costumes and weapons and all of this as a one time purchase game.
3
u/averagemethenjoyer May 21 '26
Dude I used to play the FUCK out of iron maiden legacy of the beast. I got that shit in 2017 when it came out, I was stacked as hell and spent money on the game maybe twice on dumb shit in 8 years. It was so grindy but also really fun and doable. I dont think any other game will scratch the itch that game scratched. Its such a shame poor management ran it into the ground and it closed last year.

This is Genshin for me. I love the lore/world building, but the best part is the elemental system and its interactions with everything.
The combat is simple but creates so much dynamism through the amount (gauges) of elements applied. The game is being ruined by power creep simply for money purposes/being a gacha game. If the game was updated to make every character strong and worthwhile, the element system would shine so much more.

THERE IS SO MUCH COOL SHIT MECHANIC WISE IN GENSHIN AND ITS SUCH A FUCKING SHAME. Elemental guage, forward and reverse side reactions, swirl priority, the fucking damage formulas, quadratic scalling, driving xianling in international. I know so much about this game. Shame that new characters toss all that in the garbage or dont use it in the slightest.

u/Shushukzh_123 May 21 '26
Remember when elemental reactions did something and weren't just for checking if you have the new character? I do. When dendro reactions came out I didn't care much about them, but holy shit are they fun to use and for me are the peak of Genshin's elemental combat

And here we have a short excerpt of my insane ramblings every time I'm reminded that Skirk deals several times the damage if Ayaka with half the investment.
I have both, but it still gets me complaining, because I was already using a freeze build with Ayaka, so Skirk was a straight upgrade.
Anyway, gotta go. My Childe ability cooldown ended.

This is Tarkov for me I wanna like the game so hard but the devs and community just suck The devs lied to me when I bought EOD and told me I'd never have to pay again since EOD would include all DLC and features of the game but I guess the new stuff theyve added somehow doesnt fit that description

Thankfully the cool game mechanic stops it from being outright ptw and just brutally pay to progress. If you never learn how to make a good build you’re getting curb stomped no matter what’s on it…which doesn’t make the well over 70% of items in the game being completely uncraftable and damn near unobtainable to the average player.
16
u/jeff5551 May 21 '26
I've got one.
Black desert online has this deep sea fishing mechanic that is so sick. You can build ships which is a whole process itself and then you go out with your guild and hunt down whales and blast ghost ships and whatnot. There are rare drops and it generally makes a ton of money. I randomly got roped into one of those in a guild I'd joined on a whim as a newer player and it was the coolest shit, got a cut of the profits as part of the guild payout system after.
The downside is BDO is atrocious p2w cancer even by korean MMO standards, no right being as cool of a game as it is

u/Joshslayerr May 21 '26

Whenthe game has a really cool steampunk airship concept that gets thrown away for no good reason to become a generic fantasy game like every other Korean MMO with admittedly decent combat but nothing else and then dies within literally 14 months (it's Elyon, fka Ascent: Infinite Realm)
8
u/BallisticThundr May 21 '26
Clash royale is a potentially very fun game ruined by devs who are trying to extract as much money from their playerbase to the detriment of the game as possible. They seem to push the boundaries of what the playerbase puts up with rather than trying to enhance the experience.
6
u/spingusfellow May 21 '26
War Thunder is the most balanced (realistic, easy to learn, fun to play) plane arcade sim I've ever played and I have been playing for 13 years. However it's free to play with an incredibly grindy and predatory currency system. Though props to the devs, they have made it slightly better for the players in the last 2-3 years.
6
u/Silver_Turtlewax May 21 '26
Blade and Soul was a Korean MMO game that revolved around different martial arts (mostly fantasy versions). Kung Fu Master was a tank class and it has been the best feeling MMO gameplay I have ever played and had interesting boss stun/kd/daze mechanics in raiding.
HOWEVER, the company who ran it, NCSoft, are some of the greediest developers I've ever seen who monetized the shit out of that game. They destroyed the possibility of non-P2W players from being able to do the top content without weeks/months of farming every single day for the necessary upgrades/gear.
There were other issues such as content feedback, under delivered promises, and other stuff, but the monetization is what really killed it for me. I still think about the gameplay now and then.

Asphalt 9 is genuinely the only good racing game ever for me. Others just go for the shitty realism or have no gameplay mechanics or have no customisation and etc. Asphalt 9 has it all. Genuinely could've been a perfect racing game if it wasn't for a fucking p2w lootboxes dogshit

And all the cool and fun weapons are locked down by thousand hours of material gathering and getting stomped by people who paid money to be overpowered. Fucking shame on the developers.

Could be worse: it could be a cool mechanic that the developer/publisher patented, making sure that other games would never use it again or at least never to the same extent as the original, then NEVER USES IT AGAIN, guaranteeing that the mechanic is basically a forgotten treasure.
