Let me tell you about Diesel 10 (I'm only larping about knowing every single thing about him, because I am not too invested into the Thomas series, since I'm only mildly autistic)

396

u/Vexcenot May 26 '26

what happened in season 5?

690

u/Vera_Verse May 26 '26

Shibuya Incident

387

u/wellthathappened43 May 26 '26

The conductor opening his domain for 0.2 seconds was such a fire scene

28

u/Razor-Swisher May 27 '26

Makes me think of like, Mussolini and other dictators and politicians in JJK

“Domain Expansion: Trains on Time…”

(Domain Expansion, Trains on Time is Benito Mussolini’s ultimate trump card. It allows him to restrict his trapped opponents’ counterattacks to only be capable of performing on a set rhythm, as if they were public services like Trains running on a perfect schedule. This enforced conditional non-violence makes Trains on Time a very powerful Domain Expansion, and the most effective defense tool available to any Cursed Dictator.)

Thomas doesn’t travel through Kanto though. Not since the REAL Shibuya Incident.

368

u/Kindly_Regret_7930 May 26 '26

Season 5 is where a lot of more action focused episodes were present as a supposed "test" for the upcoming Thomas and the Magic Railroad Movie. Some examples are a train being saved from going over a waterfall, a boulder destroying a building in a fiery explosion, a crane falling over in the middle of a raging storm, and an engine almost being scrapped (basically killed) right in front of the audience's eyes.

Obviously still for kids but still an increase in action over the previous seasons.

92

u/helloilikewoodpigeon May 26 '26

not to mention they planned 2 on-screen deaths

one of them being in the same episode as the boulder

24

u/LightningFerret04 May 26 '26

Ah not the boulder episode

17

u/Thunder_the_blue May 26 '26

That episode frightened me badly, I had the wooden train set piece for that episode that came with a brown plastic boulder and I wouldn’t place with it because that episode was so frightening

10

u/LightningFerret04 May 27 '26

“Rusty is sure that on a clear night, Boulder gazes up at the mountain where he once lived, and sighs”

The fact that this is how an episode of Thomas and Friends ends is kind of insane.

I never had that train set but I’m pretty sure I had nightmares about this ambiguously sentient boulder as a kid

There were a lot of explosions.

61

u/IncreaseWestern6097 the Triangle Guy May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26

You could tell David Mitton (the series’ director) really wanted to do movies, because both Thomas and his passion project TUGS are full of moments like this.

TUGS was even more extreme, with an entire episode culminating in a harbor engulfed in flames.

Dude really loved his pyrotechnics.

15

u/helloilikewoodpigeon May 26 '26

all this because munitions

4

u/NicholasWildeRails bringing the Morning Thunder May 27 '26

Munitions is such a great Tugs Episode

Fuck Bluenose for killing Big Mickey btw

69

u/HBenderMan May 26 '26

Toby almost goes over a waterfall after a section of bridge is destroyed due to a dam collapsing

Percy is almost buried alive after a mine collapse

Stepney is nearly imploded and scrapped

Skarloey gets buried in an avalanche

An engine falls of a bridge and drowns and his ghost is believed to have been seen

A coach is saved from being scrapped

James nearly gets crushed by a tree and almost explodes from fuel tankers

14

u/Dgero466 May 26 '26

WAIT WAIT, ENGINE GHOST OF A DROWNED RINGS A BELL THAT WAS SEASON 5?!

8

u/HBenderMan May 26 '26

4

u/Dgero466 May 26 '26

Yeah that’s the one, I think as a toddler that was the most memorable for how it scared me too tbh, I dunno why exactly but the fluidity of the water/swamp the train fell into made the scene feel extra off with how stiff the trains can be in the older seasons if that makes any sense

27

u/littlefanofmany do purpl stuff May 26 '26

I don't know, I'm only mildly autistic (disclaimer for Thomas fans, this is only just a joke, it's okay you to be fans of Thomas, depending if your either neurotypical, neurodivergent, to any severity, just have a good day)

14

u/Vexcenot May 26 '26

I'd still like a run down of season 5

16

u/littlefanofmany do purpl stuff May 26 '26

I did searching for he says it is so well known within the community and this is what I found:

-being really chaotic and action-packed being a start for the series being considered the Golden Age

-high octane crashes throughout the season like "Toby and the Flood" and "A Better View for Gordon"

-the legendary "Rusty and the Boulder" episode for being a homage to the Indiana Jones series

-surprisingly dark and eerie themes like in "Duncan Gets Spooked" and "Stepney Gets Lost"

-cinematic test run and having the writers being more free and creative

Diesel 10 got turned into a monster truck by the lemons fron cars. Im serious.

14

u/SeaHam May 26 '26

On the rails it was a white-line nightmare. Only those mobile enough to scavenge, brutal enough to pillage would survive. The gangs took over the railways, ready to wage war for a shovel of coal. And in this maelstrom of decay, ordinary trains were battered and smashed. Trains like Thomas. The Tank Engine Thomas. In the roar of an engine, he lost everything. And became a shell of a train, a burnt out, desolate train, a train haunted by the demons of his past, a train who wandered out into the wasteland of Sodor.

u/Novoiird May 27 '26

Diesel 10 always made me scared as a child and made me develop a deep hatred for Sir TopHam Hatt for not doing anything about him. He lets one of his children practically murder the others for seemingly no reason. He always gets on them for causing confusion and delay and disrupting the system of transmission, but when Diesel not only breaks every rule he has and moral standards, he does absolutely nothing.

Diesel 10 maybe a cruel monster, but Sir TopHam Hatt is a neglectful monster.

2
