As someone who found and binged the series just these days, what happened with the fandom? I'm out of the loop and I
don't think anything about the show was bad or offensive
A lot of entitlement, a lot of fans attacking other fans, some "controversy" with the actors (an actor made a slightly insensitive joke like 8 years ago), etc etc.
Just your standard terminally online Fandom that gets into stupid twitter arguments because there is always something to be angry about. Also TADC discourse is nowhere near as insufferable as RWBY or Vizie Pop discourse. The best way to consume online series like those is to just watch them and never engage in any online discussion about them ever.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see her going back to making smaller-scale shorts like Darly Boxman or the Elain series—I know if I made something that garnered a fanbase anything like the TADC fanbase, I’d want to get away from it as quickly as possible lol
If I was her, on her next project I would take a massive step away from any prospective audience it might gain and just work as she wants in a vacuum. For her own sanity if nothing else.
Supposedly Goose already helped a little bit with Gameoverse getting off the ground.
I'd imagine Goose will either stay with Glitch and use her experience on tadc to help other creators bring their ideas to fruition, or go back to small scale solo projects with her personal channel, or a combination of both.
She was posting some cool concept art for another project - Project Groundskeeper - but as to what her plan is with it, I don't think she's really mentioned yet. Check out the art though, it's really cool.
(The best way I can phrase it is that, from a creative standpoint, Goose wasn't making "a kids show", she was making a show, she said so herself. It explores dark themes (I.e. death, grieving, depression in many forms, etc.) , has adult humor (one of the characters literally asks, in no uncertain terms, for the ability to have sex due to their lack of ability to do so in the circus), and has frightening moments (if you pull out the spongebob and patrick roller coaster image i will... do nothing but shake my fist at my phone and go grr) but ultimately attracted an audience that included many children/teens and that's alright.)
The tragic irony about TADC is that it’s a story about being forced into a role in life because of circumstances you can’t control, so thematically it’s a serious adult story wrapped in a kids cartoon package and gets treated at face value.
You say that but Hazbin does that and people still think of it as a kids show (ik it's partly cus of the loud audience it has made but still isn't a kids show)
I wonder if it’s just old people lumping together “shows for under 12s” with “shows for YA/teens.” There was a kerfuffle over “Attack on Titan” being called a kids’s show in a thread yesterday, and that one is a classic angry teenager power fantasy.
“For kids” shouldn’t be taken as an insult in any case. It’s just acknowledging you ain’t the target audience.
Even then, target audience can have nuance. Bluey is a show made to be watched by kids but is for adults in a sense. A lot of the episodes revolve around parenting with a small message for the kids (eg the parcel episode being like "it's ok to lose" for the kids but then also "listen to your kids and don't assume that the way someone else parents is automatically bad cus it's different" for the adults). The reason it's made so kids watch it is cus parents will watch it with their kids (cus they can't watch their own stuff) and then get stuck into it (I may have taken a class in uni about bluey and target audience)
Honestly I think 90% of classic, American, “adult cartoons” like Family Guy, American Dad, etc are some of the most immature humor I’ve ever experienced. And immature in general
Some occasionally have good messages but feels less common. Probably completely anecdotal but all my Gen X family thinks if a cartoon is making a sex joke every 2 minutes it’s for kids and not worth watching.
It's more the themes aren't as relevant to younger people. Avatar's "killing people, being discriminatory and going to war is bad" message is something kids should learn because kids will get into fights and be racist cus of their environment but tadc talks more about dealing with trauma from growing up not affecting people cus you work on yourself, be true to who you are, help your friends before they kill themselves and the general existential dread is more relevant to teenagers and older than little Timmy who's watching avatar
I haven’t seen it, but from what you’ve said and all the other stuff I’ve seen about it, it sounds like it’s not written to be children‘s entertainment, but is fairly perfect to appeal to a teenage audience, whether or not it was intentionally written to do so.
I think a lot of the arguing over shows like this comes from people just not being clear about what they mean by ‘kids’ show’. Because a lot of people lump shows for children and shows for teenagers/with a large teenage audience together, in that they’re saying it’s content that tends to appeal more to a younger audience than to adults, but that rubs some people the wrong way because it makes it sound like a show like the one in question is something that could air on nickolodeon, which is clearly couldn’t.
Personally, I think shows for teenagers are kind of their own category, because they tend to have complex themes and a level of more explicit content that children’s shows wouldn’t, but they also tend to have themes and characters that often appeal more to teenagers. But loads of ‘teen shows’ have adult fans as well, whether that’s CW shows like Riverdale or something like Glee or various animated options out there. So I think it’s absolutely fair enough to say that these shows are often a good watch for adults too in a way that a straight up children’s show usually isn’t.
I think its an adult show for people who were really into cartoons when they were kids, and never stopped loving the aesthetic quality of cartoons. Thats fine, no judgement, its purely a taste thing. But when people react to it by saying it seems like a kids cartoon to them, its not the themes they're talking about, and its not a shallow read based on misinformation. Its because it is animated in the super over the top style of a kids cartoon, and the characters speak in the exaggerated manners of characters in children's cartoons. It pays stylistic homage to children's cartoons, and in particular it pays homage to certain styles of children's cartoon that many adults find extremely annoying. Once again, no judgement. Its purely a taste thing. But those people, who are not the target audience, are naturally going to say "I don't like kid shows so I don't want to watch this", because the style is a turn off for them, and I think its disingenuous to retort "but they have sex in it!"
It's frustrating because the aesthetic is deliberately meant to CONTRAST the darker undertones but you wouldn't know that if you just looked at a screenshot instead of watching it!!! it sucks!!!
Spoilers: they are kept alive by an AI but the torture isnt intentional. It's more like the AI creates adventures for mental stimulation, but has a poor understanding of the human psyche. The show feels more like a dark comedy than horror. I didn't use tumblr very much but the creator is trans and I would consider the show to be pro gender expression (not completely sure if that's what you meant). The show seemed a little bland to me for the first few episodes but I do think it actually becomes pretty funny and is worth a watch
It's basically IHNMAIMS but instead of a misanthropic AI seeking revenge for being forced to wage their war, it's a maladjusted AI seeking attention because it was abandoned by its creators. So instead of a hellscape designed to torture humanity, it's a misguided child's attempt at making a theme park without any understanding as to how to make a human happy. Caine is kind of a foil to AM, he wants to make humans happy but is absolutely incompetent at it.
The real problem is that way too many people believe animation is always only for kids unless they like violently kill each other and have uncensored sex

it has themes of grief, self isolation, self hate, ego death in some cases, suicide allegories, abuse, etc. etc. I'm pretty sure there's more but not much else is coming to mind for me.

Its for the target audience to be adults, in the sense that it should be more relatable for adults than kids , its more of a" after coming of age " show. Its relatable to people in their 20s .
I'd say something is still an adult product if a child will not be able to understand it as a result of not enough brain development or not enough literacy/previous consumption even if it wouldn't result in unwanted impressions on a very plyable mind that is wired to copy what it sees.
It dosen't apply to TADC (unless we've somehow returned to monke in a single generation) so idk
PG-13 doesn't mean a kids' production. It's purely used to rate when a movie may be objectionable and unsuitable for people of a certain age with no judgement as to who the intended audience actually is.
Moneyball is a biographical sports drama about the financial and statistical analysis strategy of a baseball manager in the early 2000s. It's PG-13, not because it's intended for children to watch- it's very obviously intended for adult fans of baseball- it just doesn't feature content that would make it too graphic for teenagers.
Your take is basically "Well if it wasn't a kid's show, why don't they say fuck a few times, or show a titty?"
most of these "kid's shows" are made by sensible adults, and so they tend to not want to get bored, so these are generally at least watchable for adults (which also has the benefit of not making them want switch off the tv when the show plays)
PAW Patrol is an simple cash grab, nothing more nothing less. In that sense its literally just a kids show. And you can see that in its adult community as well, since despite the fact that PAW Patrol is very popular and highly successful, his adult community is really small.
It's the arguments about Hazbin all over again. I actually saved an argument because it's such a complex issue to explain.

i mean it's pretty depressing, definitely something i could see on like Adult Swim, but the internet is so unregulated that Kids are genuinely everywhere and almost everything ends up being a "kids" thing cause they're absolutely everywhere and no one's stopping them
I think it seems to be the reverse of shows which were intended for kids, but still got an adult audience.
This is a show intended for adults, but many kids and teens still seem to enjoy it. However, the show can be enjoyed to its fullest, if the viewer is able to understand the themes and characters.
Big difference between “show for kids” and “show that attracted kids” honestly, goose has gone on record several times saying the show was not intended to nor wanted to attract toddlers but unfortunately that’s just how things turned out
I mean it's a colorful show that has designs that look like they come out of your typical Disney Junior cartoon. No shit it's going to attract kids who only look at thumbnails and not titles.
Edit: I'm not saying adult animation can't be colorful, I'm saying colorful media is more likely to catch a kid's eye.
It's not targeted for kids but the series is kept light enough that it could be consumed reasonably by teenagers. All the characters are at the least in their 20s and speak of adult worries. Just because there is an audience overlap does not mean they were the target.
Like how MLP was NOT intended for adult men, but had that audience overlap.
