This whole thing started because he was upset about the Wikipedia article for young creationism being negative about it
126
u/Nero_Team-Aardwolf Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26
Are you shitting me 😭
How people can defend creationism in general is beyond me like this is not something you can be objective about, the bible and it‘s religious tales are entertaining but taking it‘s teachings as facts is wild to me. I‘m not religious but I can understand believing in a greater thing sure man you do you if it helps you but creationism is something else…
Like my guy creationists built the ark (as a sight you can visit) realized it makes no sense and still believe in it… It is beyond me how this will be taught at some US schools as an alternative „real“ way humans were made instead of just going by logic. (we‘re just mammals that got a way too overpowered brain and we were lucky to end up like we are today and nothing special from a biological standpoint at least no more like any other being that evolved in their way)
Creationism is what‘s holding many people back in the US and actively fights against change which is exactly the opposite of how life works in general…
(To the guy who tried to comment saying it‘s about being objective and then calling me names, there‘s a difference between having a biased opinion and telling about negative aspects of a topic… being objective in a wiki page does not mean you can‘t have positive or negative remarks… it just means that you see both parties of an argument with the same objective view seeing both negative and positive sides… it‘s about telling the whole story and truth without regards to opinion and feelings)
31
u/ChopeIsYes Jun 28 '26
While I agree, it would feel amiss to not point out we are also the best endurance runners on top of our overpowered brain
12
u/Nero_Team-Aardwolf Jun 28 '26
Oh yes ofc I wasn‘t saying we aren‘t special in general I was just saying we aren‘t more special than any other life form in their own regards we‘re just way more intelligent or to be more specific our intelligence is way more versitile than other species from an objective standpoint allowing higher thought and we can sweat (which cools us effectively while hunting for a longer period than other predators).
I was trying to simplify a much larger topic to not blow this out of proportion.

Larry Sanger, one of the co-founders of Wikipedia, has been going on a tirade for like a decade about how Wikipedia has a Liberal bias and that it needs to be a little more Conservative to keep a semblance of neutrality and he recently got permanently banned for trying to inject said Conservative viewpoints.

u/MrSpiffy123 the peener snipper guy Jun 28 '26

Don't you wish you didn't need to post sources on Wikipedia? Isn't it awful how you know something for a fact but can't seem to find anything confirming it, so you can't alter a Wikipedia article on it?
Oh, boy, are you in luck cause we have conservapedia!
Be sure to check some of our best articles like:
Best arguments against homosexuality
Top ten arguments
(Homossexuality) is infringing on more important freedoms, like freedom of religion and speech
Or Donald Trump achievements: Foreign policy
Which doesn't have any entries for 2026, but plenty of highlights like:
- Leaving or announcing the intention to leave globalist agreements
- Recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
- Leaving or announcing the intention to leave the United Nations Human Rights Council
- Giving yet another strongly conservative and nationalist speech at the UN General Assembly
And many more!

u/GuthukYoutube Jun 28 '26
Conservatives make the argument that both sides should be given equal weight
Even if one side has all the facts and logic, the other side should be given fair weight because ... Uh?
Their arguments rests on you feeling bad for them
53
60
u/clitmasher69 Jun 28 '26
Because they (pretend to) think EVERYTHING can be an opinion. Then all you have to do to paint yourself a victim is say "it's just my opinion and they hate me for it"
27
u/Neethis Jun 28 '26
This also is just phase one. Once they've got equal weight for truth and lies, they then insist that the truth shouldn't be told because it makes them feel bad.
22
u/Riakuro Jun 28 '26
“I was told there would be no fact checking”; we’re well into phase 2 it seems.
11
u/Neethis Jun 28 '26
Yeah it hasn't been even progress. News and social media has been in phase 2 for a long time but there are still holdouts like Wikipedia which has refused phase 1.

u/Mercurion77 Jun 28 '26
The earth is either billions of years old, like chemistry tells us, or 6000 years old because some guy said so. Both opinions are equal according to them
5
u/Infinite-Radiance Jun 28 '26
Ironically enough the history behind all that would smack them so silly they'd have whiplash. Western science has been historically driven by Christians attempting to understand the world via the gospel, and running into all the evidence forced the church into discussion of alternative interpretations more in line with reality. I wont be excusing anything the Church has done vis a vis Heliocentrism/anti-intellectualism in general of course, but it's so striking to me that some of the people who confirmed the former back in the day literally were the people who thought it was 6000 years old, and now we have the entire flat earth/young earth ""debate"" still somehow going on today.
17
u/SunkEmuFlock Jun 28 '26

I remember needing to watch a news clip in my HS government class that was making complaints about Wikipedia having a “heavy liberal bias” and the example several people went off on was imprisoning camps used US by immigration enforcement being listed “on par with the Holocaust” because they were both in a list on a page on internment camps.
Uh, immigrant imprisonment camps are internment camps? No one was saying they’re “as bad as the holocaust” they simply also meet the definition of ‘prison camp where large groups of people from demographics are taken against their will and held for undisclosed and undetermined amounts of time.’ It was such an annoying complaint on the simple facts of things being applied as they are. I could totally see arguments in some places for Wikipedia being left leaning, but they chose the worst possible one to try and argue on.

Considering what Conservatism is these days, trying to find a middle ground between liberalism and it would be like trying to find the middle ground between black licorice, which people have mixed opinions about, or the Elephant's Foot in Chernobyl.
Neutral =/= Middle Ground. Not when one of the schools of thought has become so damn vile that said middle ground is still somewhat egregious.
2
u/ThaGr1m Jun 29 '26
Someone else said jt started with him being angry about how the young earth creationist page was negative.....
If you literally are angry at how a religious conspiracy theory is seen as negative you've lost the plot.
It's indeed impossible to find the middle ground with these people because to them science as a whole is wrong

I'm not informed about anything Larry Sanger has said, but there genuinely is coordinated wiki vandalism from left wing groups that's been documented. I'm saying this is as someone on the left.
14
u/fireky2 Jun 28 '26
His actual ban was for trying to coordinate a group of conservatives to edit the platform, not for making the site more conservative. Essentially brigading which they have rules against
17
u/10ebbor10 Jun 28 '26
And coordinated vandalism from right wing groups, and from corporate interests, and from celebrities...
8
7
u/SometimesWithWorries Jun 28 '26
Then why are you only criticizing left wing vandalism as if it is a unique issue and ignoring the much more prominent corporate vandalism and white washing, or right wing vandalism? "As someone on the left," you are oddly going out of your way to make this seem like a unique issue of the left when it very much is not. It is almost like you are actually a fascist.

6
15
u/NanoYohaneTSU Jun 28 '26
It does have a liberal bias due to the fact of having a closed clique of extremely liberal writers and editors, but these problems are small compared to the biggest issue wikipedia has in that it deviated from it's original intent and has devolved into surface level reading created by people unknowledgeable about the subject.
https://www.vice.com/en/article/wikipedia-editors-elite-diversity-foundation/
This is a bit outdated, but when you realize
1,300 people are creating over three-quarters of the 600 new articles posted to Wikipedia every day.
You are basically mindjacked by a closed clique writing reality by mostly making shit up. Anyone who has actually tried to use wikipedia's references (me) gets fucked because everything is either missing our the intent from the research is not actually apparent.

I've read conservative news articles where the conservative authors may have used the term liberal in the broader sense of the word, like "liberal democracy", and had to see all of the people commenting, completely forget about the article because they were too busy screeching about that. If you read something like the Conservapedia, or the Conservative Bible Project, or any effort from conservatives to try to make something "fair", they read so on the nose, they come off as bad parodies. Conservatives don't know what unbiased and neutral means, they literally don't have the mental capacity for it.

This is about Larry Sanger, who co-founded Wikipedia but left the project all the way back in 2002. Since then, he's criticized Wikipedia for supposedly having a "leftist bias" and being "establishment propaganda".
Recently, his Wikipedia account was banned from editing for life after a lengthy discussion. The reason given was "off-site canvasing" - that is, he was going around encouraging people to edit Wikipedia en masse.

the founder of Wikipedia
Calling Larry Sanger a co-founder at this point is generous, he was involved with Wikipedia for just 14 months in 2001 and 2002. Calling him 'the founder' is just straight up wrong. Either way, I think it's highly disrespectful to Jimbo Wales to imply that other fucker deserves equal credit.
One of these two men has dedicated the last 25 years of his life to making Wikipedia the most comprehensive, well maintained, and generally accurate publicly accessible aggregator of information that has ever existed in human history; the other one coined the name "Wikipedia", which to my knowledge is the only very notable contribution he has made to Wikipedia as it stands today, and he has spent the last two decades complaining about Wikipedia and using his clout as a technical co-founder to help push his narratives. These people do not deserve to be spoken about in the same breath.
→ More replies (1)23
u/C0nfusedRabbit Jun 28 '26
If he was there at the start, he is a founder; just because you don't like someone does not mean you should ignore definitions. I get that you want to downplay his contributions because of your personal distaste for him, but there is much more you can attack him for without resorting to making it look like you don't know what you're talking about.

Even Hank Green explicitly calls Larry Sanger a co-founder of Wikipedia, and so even Hank Green is saying Larry is a founder.
The only way your logic works is if you try to argue that a "co-founder" is not actually a "founder", which is ridiculous. They are both founders.
I mean what exactly do you think you're gaining by lying about history? It's just delusional.
