My dad when he can’t smoke in the car and blow the smoke all over me for 15 minutes:
Fr, he always tells me to “just open my window,” but I sit behind him in the car and the smoke he blows out of the window ends up straight back in my face no matter what.

I was in a car with my friend and his mum was driving and she blew it out the wi dow but I was behind her and she was so suprised when I asked if she could stop or blow it a different direction. Like the thought had never occurred to her. My friend didnt get it either.
Not growing up around smokers really throws them for a loop when you point out how much it affects.

He thinks he’s helping by making everyone open the window, but it really only helps my mom and brother on the passenger side of the car, and fucks me over.

u/SeverePanic3794 Jun 28 '26
Oh that sucks. My dad would usually just get out of the car to smoke, like at a gas station or whatever, but even when he smoked in the car he'd let me keep my window up. I assume you've tried to tell your dad that having your window down doesn't help?

Some people or kids can't tolerate second-hand smoking, so they would try their best to 'avoid' it as much as possible by having the window down hoping for the wind to help lessen it, but it blows back in your face. It may sound stupid, however that's the only option if the smoker didn't want to put it out.
SOURCE: Had experienced this with both parents and 2 older sisters, except me and my little sister.
EDIT: Oh, and you're probably seated next to them because of limited space or whatever. Also, grammar errors.

My mum would constantly smoke in the car and once the ash blew back into my window behind her and burned a hole in my school uniform blazer 😫

My dad used to smoke every drive he had to pick us up for partial custody. At some point he stopped and started claiming he never smoked before. Then years later i found a chair behind the garage and a bunch of cigarette butts. He continues to say he’s never smoked.

First 2 weeks are the worst and the cravings never truly go away. I quit 4 years ago and every once in a while I’ll think about it again and have to distract myself to keep away from it.
It does help that the smell is enough to deter me. I can’t believe I’d never noticed how obtuse it is but your brain just masks it in favor of getting that next fix.
42
u/DjcOMSA Jun 28 '26
It never fully goes away, but it will get less and less. 10+ years from me and I very rarely ever have a craving now. Maybe once a year after a few beers, but even those seem to be getting weaker as time goes on.

As an asthmatic, I simply cant understand how people get into smoking at all because of the smell. It punches me in the face whenever I even get a whiff, and then its starts feeling hard to breathe…
Truly its the propaganda at fault, not the users, but I struggle to walk through busy city streets because of that horrid smell without feeling like im suffocating, and I wish smokers understood that. Maybe they wouldnt smoke if they knew

Then one day he thought why'd he leave himself being in a vulnerable state enough to hurt his loved ones
On that day he exited out of it & never looked back
Me along with his third generation of family is exultantly happy that he is doing whatever he likes cause of his healthy body & mind like riding badass cruiser bikes even in this late 70's

u/fuzzhead12 Jun 29 '26
I’ve always been mindblown by not only the level of physical recovery that is possible for even veteran smokers to achieve, but also by just how insanely quickly it begins.
Within 24 hours carbon monoxide levels in the lungs drop back to normal. In a day or two the cilia in the lungs begin to repair. After a week breathing is noticeably easier. And after just a month or two lung function improves by up to 30%

I had heard stories about my grandpa being a massive smoker until he suddenly quit out of the blue. My parents had always assumed that it was probably because my dad was about to be born and he wanted to make sure that he's going to be there for him.
I decided to ask him about it when he was on his deathbed. He told me that it was just because he told his friends that he could stop whenever he wanted, and none of them believed him. He quit on the spot and never smoked after that.
I was pretty underwhelmed and kind of impressed at the same time, but knowing my grandpa that reason is a lot more believable than just doing it out of some inner sense of parental responsibility. There was nothing he wouldn't do to win a bet.

My granddad was a long time smoker too, but he managed to quit a good while ago. He’s still alive at 90 but unfortunately it caught up to him and he’s got lung cancer, stage 4. But imagine how much faster it would’ve ended had he not. I still get to see him for a time longer because he made that immense effort

Basic decency to not give second-hand smoke to others. Here people straight up smoke at bus stops next to a dozen people or when you're brushing your teeth at the sinks in the uni dormitory and don't see an issue

But the little ducky is upset at not being able to smoke. Not having basic decency would mean that the ducky would just smoke anyway. The ducky in the gif is showing basic decency but is merely struggling with it because they are a victim of addiction.

18
u/Ape_x_Ape Jun 28 '26
Same here. I quit for 8 years and then smoked again during a rough patch. Now I'm almost 2 years off again. Find that non smoker in you again, they're in there, get them talking again with snacks, distractions and replacements like gum and walks, bike rides, etc. until you start feeling your lungs clearing up and you can start noticing real cash savings and other subtle but huge benefits. Also, I had my morning cigarette with the illustrated version of "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking" by Allen Carr and I was quit by the time I finished the silly little comic book. It really effectively lays out all the reasons why you actually do want to quit.

As someone who enjoys the occasional edible, I agree with this 100%. Weed addiction is weirdly normalized online.
Also, weed smokers need to realize that they fucking REEK. Bro, please change your goddamn clothes after you smoke. You smell like a skunk died in your pocket.
57
u/distastef_ll Jun 28 '26
Why smoke when edibles are easier to consume, pack a stronger punch, and leave no odor behind?
72
u/PayWooden2628 Jun 28 '26
Because it’s a different feeling. To me, smoking actual weed, hitting a pen, and doing edibles all has a distinct noticeable difference in how it feels. Edibles make me feel “heavier” than smoking.
56
u/determined_vagabond Jun 28 '26
Plus edibles are a way bigger time commitment. If I want to wake and bake on a Saturday morning and play video games I can smoke and be back to sober by lunch time to get out of the house. I only take edibles when I’m planning on rotting all day lmao.

Its worse than skunk for me. I love the smell of skunk oddly enough. Weed is like a skunk went to a perfume factory and exploded. Smokey sickly sweet smell with a bit a musk. It gives me migraines its so strong. Cigarettes do the same but I have to be right on a person to smell the Cigarettes. Weed can be several yards away.
13
u/nicknamesas Jun 28 '26
I, myself, do not use that much. I do, however, know that if they are smoking really stinky stuff like that, it is super low quality. My GF dad grew some of his own next to a blue berry patch and got some expensive seeds. Shit smelled like burnt blueberry muffins whenever he smoked.

u/xPriddyBoi Jun 28 '26
Because it's not chemically addictive like nicotine is. People can still get addicted to the sensation and overconsume, for sure, but it's not the same. Notice in this thread people having crippling headaches and withdrawal symptoms for quitting cigs for a week. Simply doesn't happen with MJ. I smoke a lot and still quit for months at a time regularly with no adverse effects.
27
u/WaywardOath Jun 28 '26
The issue however is that someone will hear that a substance is 'not technically an addictive substance', and view that as the go-ahead to be basically perpetually high.
Sure, you can quit it and not get withdrawal symptoms, but that doesn't mean you're engaging with a substance in a healthy manner, physically or mentally.
I knew someone who basically smoked a bowl every 30 minutes or so, and was incredibly anxious and antisocial without it. They never used to be that way, it developed over time from years and years of nonstop use.
5
u/xPriddyBoi Jun 28 '26
Sure, it becomes a coping mechanism and people regress to the point that they're unable to be comfortable with their sober state of anxiety, or pain, or whatever. But the thing is, that's the same for literally everything.
People become dependent on caffeine to the point that they can't operate without coffee and multiple energy drinks every day, people get obese because they binge eat to cope with stress, people get addicted to porn and gambling for similar reasons.
Just as much as there's a group of diehard weed enthusiasts who insist there are no negatives whatsoever and it can't be abused, there are a group of people who vehemently hate it to an unreasonable degree and treat it like a chemically addictive substance in the same vein as things like heroin.
11
u/Hax_ Jun 29 '26
You're a liar if you think there's no side effects to quitting weed when you're deep in it. I've done it 5 times and every time it's misery for at least a week.
→ More replies (3)4
u/Chance-Ask7675 Jun 29 '26
Who cares lol. Gambling isnt chemically addictive and gambling addiction its still viewed poorly, as it should be. Plenty of other similar cases. How easily someone can quit an addiction should have no bearing on how acceptable it is. Weed and weed addiction has destroyed a lot of people I know. I mean sure, as a substance its not as addictive as like heroine, and maybe at some point it made sense to point out that distinction...but that is an incredibly low bar.

As someone who has been a heavy smoker of both nicotine and cannabis products at various points in my life I can promise you it is a night and day difference. It was very easy to get through an 8 hour shift and keep busy without wanting to smoke a bong load, but next to impossible to go 4 hours without wanting to tear my hair out because I can't have a cigarette.
Cannabis is extremely, pervasively habit forming, especially when it's being abused. Nicotine is just straight up one of the most chemically addictive substances known to man.

Tobacco smokers or e-cigarette smokers? Because people who vehemently claim vaping is not bad for them are extremely common in my area.
9
u/Zerothian Jun 28 '26
Those people are idiots. I saw so many of them when vaping was still pretty niche and it has only gotten worse. Like sure it's better than smoking, but the ideal objectively neither.
3
u/Blossomie Jun 28 '26
Oddly enough in my neck of the woods the rhetoric seems to be that vaping is far worse for you than smoking. Then again, a lot of this might be influenced by the cigarette companies which are currently trying their hardest to get legislation passed that bans any vape that isn’t cigarette-flavoured, on account of them losing business when people decide to switch from cigs to vape for harm reduction. They have been circulating all sorts of myths and propaganda about it.
3
u/Zerothian Jun 28 '26
Oh yeah the misinfo on that side is crazy as well. Honestly I just find it sad, I personally found vaping to be an incredible cessation tool. Nothing else I ever tried worked for more than a week or even less. Vaping I quite literally never picked up a cig since the day I got my first vape.
You can ween yourself off nicotine so much easier with a vape too, then you just need to kick the mouth/hands habit which ironically was the hardest part for me lol, even more so than the nicotine.
So to see it used the way kids are now, who weren't even smoking before, that sucks.

Couple things I hate about cigarette smokers is that everyone else has to feel their addiction. People always throw their cigarettes out on the highway or when they’re told to smoke outside, they’ll smoke directly near the entrance or exit so every person nearby has to smell like shit and death with them. lots of people grew up in smoking households and have been addicted since childhood
12
u/NieMonD Jun 28 '26
I grew up with an indoor smoking mother and it just instilled a deep extreme hatred of cigarettes into me

From my own experience of the smokers I know, they're largely comprised of people who have very stressful lives or jobs who believe that they're gonna die before the health issues affect them (even though that's not likely to be the case). Even if the high is shit, it's stilloften enough to get people through a stressful shift or day without heavily impeding their judgement.

It's almost like they experience physical and mental symptoms without nicotine. Crazy right?

In my experience they just go somewhere and smoke real quick then come back

I legit wonder if my dad would actually try to stop smoking if one of my family members gets cancer from 2nd-hand smoking. He clearly won't stop even after getting hospitalised multiple times for it. I know he's the one who's sick, but it just gets harder and harder to feel sympathy for a man who ordered you to grieve him while doing nothing to keep himself alive. He treats my mum like shit despite her working her ass off to cover his hospital bills btw.
I'm tired of grieving for him. I'm going to make him grieve me.

Smelly junkies.
I've been tobacco free for over a decade. Best decision I ever made.

u/MarsieRed Jun 28 '26
This is also me when I smell smokers. I can’t stand it bro, I feel sick. I already spent a whole day with people who use perfume instead of water when showering, and the moment I escape them I immediately bump into you.
Stop attackanizing meeee :[

My dad and I have never been to a movie theater together. He doesn’t like them because he can’t smoke. Kinda sad

u/AcePowderKeg Jun 28 '26
I'm an ex heavy smoker(2 packs a day) Stopped completely 1.5 years ago.
Nicotine is nothing but highly addictive poison. Thanks to the specialized therapy I did I'm actually happier now that when I was a smoker. I never want to go back to that addiction.

u/Street_Bluejay_1465 Jun 29 '26
Smokers are insufferable. And I have to deal with them as a security guard asking them to remain in the smoking area . . . on a factory ground with hazardous chemicals, you would think I was asking them to strangle their firstborn

I had successfully quit smoking...until spending time with my family. True story.
3
u/Disasterhuman24 Jun 28 '26
Im one month into quitting nic. This post is some real shit, I felt like a fool having to constantly walk away or walk outside every 30 min. The social stigma of smoking was a bigger motivation to quit than my health.

We are driving back from looking at some houses. One of them stunk of smoke so much that the realtor wouldn't go in and we did one turn and left. House has been on market 130 days and keeps dropping the price. Sad thing is, it had all these pictures of their baby on the wall.

u/DoTheDoggyPaddle Jun 28 '26

u/Bruce10Wayne Jun 29 '26
I quit vaping in December last year. I used a Juul for like 9-10 years. Family gatherings I’d just go to the bathroom and hit it a few times to get by, working in an office I’d do the same, but the toughest was a long flight. Anything beyond like a 2-3 hour flight was brutal, I’d have to rip the thing many times right before boarding and then hustle to the bathroom right after landing to do the same. Also would have to buy tons of pods if I was traveling because of not only lack of availability of the pods but also the price in other places was sky high. Glad I ditched it but my lord I get a craving for that thing from time to time especially if I have a couple drinks.

u/GrassTouchEnthusiast Jun 28 '26
Nah just sneak it when they’re not looking or go to the bathroom like a real addict

Nicotine is THE most difficult chemical to break addiction from. It's easier to break free from heroin.
37
u/Archiive Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26
That didn't sound right to me so I did a bit of googling, and it's not true.
https://americanaddictioncenters.org/adult-addiction-treatment-programs/hardest-quit
It's like number 5 on the (this) list, but if you actually read about it, the main reason the addiction is hard to break is only 50 % because of the actual chemical and has just as much to do with breaking habits.
Don't spread misinformation, please.
6
u/flibbertygibbette Jun 28 '26
That's still insurmountably difficult / unrealistic to expect people to be able to "just get over", though. Being comparable or on list with fucking heroin makes it pretty impossible for most people.
11
u/RevolutionAccurate56 Jun 28 '26
They never said it wasn’t hard, all they did was correct someone who said it was harder than getting off heroin
→ More replies (1)10
u/Archiive Jun 28 '26
I NEVER said it wasn't hard, but the top comment literally said "THE most difficult chemical to break addiction from."
Not only is it just straight up wrong and misinformation. It minimizes the struggles drug addicts go through.

Generally bodies prefer survival.
7
u/tayswampflorida Jun 28 '26
Bodies dont require dietary sugar it breaks the required sugar down from foods and transforms it. Refined sugar is completely unneeded and much more harmful than nicotine.
6
u/_SlappyMagoo_ Jun 29 '26
“Much more harmful than nicotine” is probably a stretch. This is coming from a nicotine addict that knows what the shit can do to your body (particularly to your cardiovascular system).

No its not. Nicotine withdrawal is nowhere near as bad as from Heroin and Heroin can cause post-acute withdrawal symptoms of depression, anxiety and cognitive impairment that can last for months.

u/astralchanterelle Jun 28 '26
Not really. People like to say that but it makes no sense. Opioid/opiate withdrawal is pure hell., people go to the grave to avoid it. Nicotine withdrawal is irritability and a headache.
7
u/xSaitoHx Jun 28 '26
Where I work at people burn through 2 packs per 12 hour shift EVERY SINGLE DAY, they go for a smoke break about twice, sometimes three times per hour and I just don't understand it.
These are also the sorts of people that will complain about having to spend money and be as scummy and greedy as possible, while also spending like 20€+ per day on cigarettes.
I tried them once and they are just gross, and smell about as bad as shit, doesn't matter if they are the cheapest or most expensive ones.
Same goes for weed.
They absolutely tweak or lose it if we are somewhere they can't go smoke for more than an hour.

Well yeah, that's how nicotine works. I don't smoke it but from what I've heard from people who do, it doesn't even feel that good after a while and you stay addicted to it because there are withdrawal symptoms if you don't. Yeah they still gotta quit but the process will involve some really bad headaches on the way there.
