It's interesting how that's the opposite of where I'm from. I live in Vietnam and Reddit is essentially THE anti-government website. No full blocks yet (thankfully), but occasionally they prevent you from connecting to the server for a few hours.
They definitely know, they just use the "security valve" aspect where a government allows certain platforms to be the wild west because it's better to let people express their anger than to try to put a lid on it

They don't need to fabricate anything though. It literally doesn't matter if the phone contained any actual evidence or not since the offence is tampering with a legally seized device and the border force doesn't need a warrant to seize an electronic device.
Technically it was the person who took his phone that deleted his stuff because he put the wrong code into the pin. From what I've heard you're not legally obligated to give anyone your phones pin code in america, so the guy gave him a different pin instead of the one that unlocked it, which just so happened to make the phone delete everything.
I used to live in Dubai. When I got there, I was told, "Use this phone, but don't put anything sensitive on it, phones aren't safe here." So I didn't.
Good instructions. The government hacked my phone, along with thousands of others. The method was simple: they owned the telecom company that every phone had to use, so they spoofed a certificate from the cellphone manufacturer and pushed an update that was basically, "I am an official security update, install this spyware that records/tracks everything very important security patch." But I didn't have anything on it, so no biggie.
Government took an interest in me anyway. We didn't know why, but I had a tail on me 24/7. You didn't put anything sensitive on your phone, right? No photos of you drinking, or anything like that? You're sure? We weren't sure what they wanted, but I had an upcoming flight out of the country, and I was told to expect they'd grab me there.
Grabbing people at the airport is smart. Not gonna be a lot of surprises from a guy who just walked through a metal detector and had all his belongings scanned. Plus, people expect someone traveling to be out of contact for a while. So the people grabbing you get a good chunk of time where no one's going to be looking for you or concerned that they haven't heard from you.
Anyway, that's exactly what happened. They scooped me up right as I got through the metal detectors. I had some of my colleagues trailing me, and I gave them the little hand signal that I was being taken, but it was unnecessary, they weren't subtle about it. I handed over my electronics, gave them my passwords, surrendered my passport, got taken to a detention facility.
Much, much later I found out the reason I was detained was that I was suspected of providing material aid to a plot to kidnap a princess of the royal family. A guy who had drove for me many times during my work was allegedly up to something. Government hacked his phone, looked at all the contact between me and him and all the time spent traveling together and thought, "Huh, these two seem suspiciously close. He might be part of this as well."
I was reasonably well connected back then. Between people I'd met in college and previous work for the U.S. government I had relevant contacts in the State Department and the Fifth Fleet.
On top of that, my former great aunt (I think she'd be called my great aunt, she was my father's father's sister) had married a petroleum engineer and formed some deep ties in Saudi. She'd spent WWII hanging out in Casablanca, and flew out on the second plane to Saudi as soon as the Allies managed to secure the air in Africa. Anyway, a very long, only marginally relevant story short: I had some acquaintances who knew their way around things.
And all this is just to say: once the people I was with saw me get taken, basically two things got set in motion. First, the embassy sent a message to the UAE saying, "Heyyyyyy, we noticed you detained an American citizen, mind if we ask why? Would reeeeeeally appreciate an answer in the next 72 hours, thaaaaaaaanks, xoxo." Second, my friends arranged for a fixer to get things sorted out.
A fixer in the UAE is basically just a relatively unimportant member of the royal family who just goes and talks to more important members of the royal family on your behalf. These are the random cousins and grandkids who aren't in power or anything, but can knock on the door of people who are.
I got some guy who did not inspire confidence. Maybe he just wasn't that great at English, but I got the impression he didn't know what he was doing / was new to this whole fixing thing. We had a brief meeting at the detention facility and his only concern was whether I'd had any drugs on me. Caught with drugs: very serious, very bad. No drugs on you? This is a nothing-burger, everything will be sorted out inshallah.
The detention facility seemed brand new, like contractors had just finished putting the thing together. There was dust from what I was presume construction work on everything. The mattress looked brand new and smelled like they'd just taken it out of plastic. I was the only person in a sort of pod designed for 8 people, with individual cells that connected to a little atrium that had a big table and a TV. It's possible I was the first person they'd ever put in that pod, I might have even been the only detainee in the whole facility at the time.
The TV just played an Arabic version of Shark Tale, that was apparently all it was set up to do. They gave me the remote and I fiddled with things for a while, but seeing as how the most I was going to achieve was maybe getting it to play an English version of Shark Tale, I didn't really put much effort into it. I lost count of how many times I watched Shark Tale. I still have never seen it in English. My understanding is that I'm not missing out on much.
The food was microwaved meals that I'm pretty sure the guards just bought at the nearest grocery store, along with little cups of vanilla ice cream that you ate with a wooden paddle. The guards asked me if there was anything else I wanted food-wise. I said no, so that's all I ate, just a bunch of microwave chicken biryanis and cups of ice cream.
No showers, no change of clothes, I spent the entire time in the clothes I went to the airport with. There were sinks and toilets in the cells.
Besides the guards and the single brief meeting with the fixer, I didn't talk to anyone else. No one from the government came to see me and interview me or explain why I was detained, there were no other detainees in my pod, nothing. The guards themselves had no idea why I was there or how long I'd be there. All they knew was "this guy stays here until the computer says he can go."
And eventually that's what happened. I'm sitting there, a muted Shark Tale playing in the background, and a guard says, "Hey, you're free to leave."
I get handed back my passport and luggage (which looked like it had been mildly rifled through), I order a cab back to my apartment, I buy another ticket out of the country ($1000 well spent) and second time around I board my flight without issue.
I didn't hear about the whole princess thing until later, I'd already left the country when I got an update from my friends/acquaintances in the Middle East who had kept poking around. Up until then, I had zero idea why I'd been detained, no one on the government's side had offered any sort of explanation, and no one seemed to even have a clue. The best explanation available was just that there'd been some sort of computer error.
When I was told by friends that my detention had been because of an alleged princess-kidnapping plot, it sounded so far-fetched. A plot to kidnap a princess? I didn't even really believe them and continued to think it was probably just a computer error of some sort. I don't know why, it wasn't like their logic was bad-- hey, we asked around and you got detained because of connections to the driver, and then we asked around some more and found out why the driver got arrested-- but the whole thing seemed so off-the-wall that I continued to believe in the computer error theory up until 2018.
Now, I have no idea if the driver I'd been using was actually a member of a plot to kidnap a princess or if that was just something their security services hallucinated, but there were as it turns out, people trying to kidnap princesses.
I guess the important thing to keep in mind here is that when I say "kidnap a princess," I'm kinda using the Emirati logic on what constitutes a kidnapping. It's the king, not the princess, who decides where the princess gets to live. So if the princess wants out, but the king does not want her out, then anyone the princess convinces to help her escape is a kidnapper.
The UAE has/had some unhappy princesses, and for a period of ~20 years or so, some number of attempts were made by them to break out. In 2018, one of them was relatively successful; with the aid of a French ex-DGSE agent (basically the French equivalent of the CIA) she escaped to Oman on jet skis and tried to flee to India on a yacht. They didn't make it all the way, Indian special forces intercepted them off the coast of Goa and brought them back to the UAE. In any case, that event was enough to convince me my friends weren't just a bunch of gossips with overactive imaginations.
As for the princess(es), alls well that ends well I suppose? The French spy guy got a slap on the wrist, and apparently the king and that princess have come to an understanding and she can travel and do stuff now, and I think the other unhappy princesses are similarly fine with their situation these days, though it's not like I have any first hand knowledge of anything.

If you install graphene it encrypts your drive which needs a key to access. Everytime you enter your pin or password it uses the key to allow access to the data on the drive. It also gives you the option to set a duress pin or password. If you enter it at any time it prompts you for your normal credentials graphene deletes the key to the encrypted drive, making it pretty much impossible to ever get anything that was on the phone.

Honestly, what Graphene needs to do is unlock a honeypot environment for LEO to look at while it quietly wipes data in the background. You set up the honeypot environment with some names ad apps, and it populates a few dozen fake texts and some fake call history, some fake and innocuous browser history, whatever. Then when the distress code is typed in, the real data is wiped in the background silently while LEO starts poking around. That way, they don't even know your data was wiped.

Well there's no police patrol actively searching for dissidents as you might think. But there were instances where border control detained people after randomly checking their phones. Like usually people get in prison after posting something really critical of the government on government controlled social media while their profile has their face and full government name. As of right now you usually have to be really open if you wanna get caught basically
On top of that, if you live close enough to Ukrainian border, your mobile internet only works for whitelisted websites (just like China) and you can occasionally hear a combination of sirens, gunshots and occasional explosions.
Sorry to break it for you but mobile internet gets whitelisted every day in every region as of today. No sirens though, head of my state doesn't want want to worry citizens with such thing (he actually said something like that)

Not really random, but there are phone checks on border control, airports, metro, during mass events such as rallies. Maybe in closer to frontline regions things are different, but fortunately I am not there.
