There is something so haunting about announcing your imminent death while it has not even happened yet. It's like those "What would you do if you only had a week to live" but manifested.

In some ways, it can be a good thing. You have the opportunity to plan your final words and your last moments with loved ones. Most people don't have that luxury.
It is very bittersweet.

Please don't vaguely imply that suicide is good in a subreddit that many teenagers and young adults do. If this wasn't your intention, it's how I interpreted it and I would wager that others probably would as well

u/Oppositeofhairy 29d ago edited 29d ago
I’d hope that wasn’t seen that way, but I agree.
I think making permanent solutions for temporary problems isnt a good move. Feelings are strong but they pass.
The only time I find it appropriate is through compassionate death in dignity. If you are terminally ill, or have something medically debilitating that will create significant harm or a permanent low quality of life, then seeking assistance to gently pass makes sense.
Other than that, I know its hard, i know its hard to see past the present, but suicide isnt the way out.

I think the comment was expressing how they thought they would but decided not to, its more implying that if you do plan it you shouldn't just do it and should give yourself time to decide if it's really what you want.
I interpret it as the people wanted to commit but went to church and then decided against it
4
u/BuckieTheCat 29d ago
unfortunately no, churchyard is referring to the area of land outside churches primarily used for graveyards, the comment is saying the graveyard is full of people who died thinking they would have another day, at which point saying it's nice to be able to choose is referring to committing

I sat in a working group with a guy who did MAiD (the Canadian version). He didn't tell anyone, but had a family member send an email to the working group afterwards. The crazy thing is that he'd been in a meeting with us the week before. He knew he had one week to live and spent it in a meeting

My dad was similar when he was dying from cancer. Refused to stop working until they made him because he fell on the job. I think he just wanted to feel normal most of the time.

A former neighbour of mine recently died through euthenasia (with good reason, the poor man was riddled with cancer). It's ghastly, sure, but it allowed him to see all friends and family one last time, and gave his wife and daughter plenty of time to make their peace with his departure.
I'd take that over sudden traumatic death every day. Or even worse, what my grandpa went through - 3 strokes in one day and then spending the next 8 years in a retirement home because your brain turned into swiss cheese.

May I ask, how do you face your death and accept it and keep actively living through your remaining days anyway? Knowing I will start deteriorating one day or get in an accident fills me with crippling dread and terror, it’s making it hard for me to enjoy the life I do have, knowing everything I’m trying to build up will all amount to nothing but my mind being flooded with sheer dread/panic with no goodbyes or a miserable bedridden existence in my last moments.
We do all this for nothing, how do you accept it and move forward anyway?
Only people like you would have an actual answer, I just had to ask. It’s something I’ve been really struggling with. I’m still pretty young yet death is all I can think about every night, it’s haunting me
14
u/Haha-Perish Aug 02 '26
not facing my death myself, but for me, i just accept that its coming. i dont know when. it will happen no matter what and what my loved ones will think and feel haunts me, yet… idk what happens after and maybe ill get another go around. maybe itll be 60 years from now or maybe 6 months. either way all that matters is comfort and happiness for today and the near future.

I have not had a happy life. My mother was a very bad person, and I was the target of her frustrations. My father spent most of my childhood struggling with addiction. My mother stole my entire trust fund before I was 10 and was physically and psychologically abusive, so was my stepfather. At age 16 I was forced to move from Long Beach, California to South Mississippi, I buried myself in the Internet. I made some friends at school, but I went from a high school of 4000+ to a school of around 300. I survived hurricane Katrina on the waterfront, graduated, got my girlfriend pregnant, got a job and married her. We ended up not being able to stand living together, so we split. We reconciled briefly when we were both going through emotional crap, and I ended up with my bonus child (who I love as my own.)
Got in an argument at work, got canned, ended up unemployed for 6 months, laned the same job at a different company with much lower pay. Stuck with an abusive boss and low wages for a few years until I got into a customer service job that I loved at an almost manageable wage, and got stuck with a girlfriend who drove away my roommates and made me financially dependent on her, so I couldn't split for several years until I got a job at 2.5x the pay. Things were looking up, I started working with a nonprofit and found a passion for volunteer work, but I made some poor choices at the bar and was taken advantage of a few times. Really messed with my self esteem.
Through my volunteer work, I met my now husband. We started hanging out , then lockdown happened. We quarantined together, bond, and he moves in. His work wants him to relocate to Houston, we agreed to move together and sell my place. I take certificate courses online and get a job during my IT hobby into my full-time job. We buy a house, my son turns 18 and moves in with us. Lots of love, but not enough room. I bit my tongue, why won't it heal? We buy a bigger house a little further out in Houston, pool, hot tub, media room. Move in, this spot on my tongue would heal a bit, then rub on my tooth a bit, let's see the doctor. Doctor sends me to the emergency room. 14 hours, 3 CT scans, 2 biopsies, and a throat scope down my nose later, I have cancer and will lose my tongue.
I had my tongue and neck lymph nodes removed in November, and had radiation and chemo December through February. May I go back for a rescan, and I have tumors in my lungs and on my spine. That moved me into incurable stage 4 cancer. I got my test results from a SMS that I had new test results in my chart. The next week the doctor brought me in for the results. Incurable, 12-18 months to live.
I've always been aware that terminal illness was a possible future, as I'm a chronic overthinker. Due to my tragic background and overthinking nature, I've always considered myself a student of Diogenes, a cynic. Death isn't scary, is simply the end. Death is coming for me, and I get to know that it's a lot closer than most. When I die is out of my control, and, once I'm dead, I will lack awareness. My children and the connections I've made are my mark on the world. I'm not going to lie and say that I'm staying positive, but I'm not worried for myself, just those that continue without me.

Was it from a cancer diagnosis? If so, there are so many experimental treatments waiting for human participants and many of them seem like they have amazing potential to cure cancers that were previously utterly incurable.
There's some for other diseases too, genetic, immune, etc. There's even the beginning of some trials for prion diseases I think.

There’s a play called “Night, Mother” where the protagonist announces this at the beginning and ultimately follows through. The body of the play is her giving her reasons to her mother who goes from brushing it off to begging her not to.

Not just that, but he also can barely even afford it. he has the choice of living in abject poverty knowing that the side effects are going to annihilate his quality of life, or living in abject poverty because he can't work anyways while being in constant chronic pain without any remediation.
From that perspective, it makes complete sense why he justs wants it to end. even in his live stream it didnt click for people and it broke my heart. people were just selfishly asking him to carry on, and the best advice was just to find other ways to work. like, that's not the issue. the man can't even lie down and just exist without it hurting.

Meanwhile, people that have never stepped inside a hospital to work, or pharmacy or medical research lab, etc. -
People who never worked a day in their life to be able to afford food and shelter, get obscenely wealthy off of this system
and then use that wealth and influence to pressure the company to make further cuts to coverage, deny more claims, for doctors to see less patients, for medications to cost more - and for the government to have less regulations, to keep the current system, enable greater monopoly and uncompetitive behavior, to sue countries that dare make meds accessible, and so on
If our systems were still working after a nuclear winter, and we all lived underground in bunkers, they would then be pressuring the government to reduce the amount of food ration bars you got, to Make the supply last longer so they could prevent any meaningful part of their resources from being touched

Fibromyalgia is no joke, studied it in med school and it’s really hard to live with it. If not properly treated the pain can be insane
Edit: part of the treatment requires a lot of mental health care and many steps for the patient to live a dignified life while dealing with the pain
43
u/KaiBahamut Aug 02 '26
I have it and while the pain level isn't intense, it's *constant*. The only time I get a break from it is when deep asleep...which surprise, isn't always easy to achieve. Add in a bunch of other chronic issues tied to it and flares when it DOES get intense...even if he didn't have any other problems, it alone would be tough.
25
u/alguien99 Aug 02 '26
Yeah, from what my teachers explained the level of pain varies from person to person but the main thing is how constant the pain is.
One of her patients said that the pain varied from mild and easy to ignore, to straight up being unable to get off bed.
14
u/butterflydeflect Aug 02 '26
That’s how mine is - some days i feel practically normal and others i am unable to do something like walk to the bathroom and i have to crawl.
But I’m in a very lucky position where my work is extremely accommodating and my doctor is brilliant, and the difference those things make is astonishing. Nobody can cure my pain but i think when you have a chronic illness it feels like your cup is constantly almost over-flowing, and things like being able to work from home during a flare up takes a tablespoon out of the cup. And having a doctor that i know will listen takes another tablespoon. Having a bedside table with shelf stable snacks, disposable toothbrush and baby wipes takes another tablespoon out. It’s all about minimising the overflow, i believe.
From the way you speak with empathy, i think you’re gonna be a great doctor.
6
u/alguien99 Aug 02 '26
Aww thanks! My mom jokes that i’m going to be like Dr house lol, we both like that show.
Hope you are doing okay with that condition. And that’s a very good analogy, honestly i had never seen it like that, chronic illnesses have always been a blind spot for me as i simply don’t know what it’s like, but the over flow analogy is a pretty good one. So the best way to deal with this kinds of illnesses isn’t just the meds but also help them set up a system around themselves as part of their routines to better the quality of life
112
u/Ungodly_Box Aug 02 '26
Wish all doctors were as sympathetic as you, I know two people with it and neither got help from doctors
61

Yeah, part of our study program was looking into this sort of cases, one of the first things we saw in psychology was burn out and how it could affect our patients and our service
Another one was how we aren’t free of prejudice even if we don’t mean to discriminate and that could lead to problems with our service
36
u/alguien99 Aug 02 '26
I’m not a doctor yet lol, still studying.
But if it’s any comfort, the whole program makes focus on sympathy and trying to Connect with the patient as much as we can. It’s a pretty good med school imo, i love the focus on social subjects
So i’m not the only one

That's why it bothers me when people talk about assisted suicide as if it was purely a moral dilemma. There are very clear incentives on the side of healthcare providers to prefer assisted suicide to costlier treatments.
20
u/Silly_Ad_5262 Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26
The feeling of being a "burden," which is reenforced by society and institutions (even the medical institutions providing MAID), also creates a cycle of depression and stress-induced decline in health that makes assisted suicide seem like the only solution for medical issues which may ultimately be treatable or even curable. I don't believe it can be fully consensual when financial pressure is a factor or when doctors offer euthanasia to patients who are still pursuing treatment options. It's coercive.
Edit: I'm not referring to this case specifically. I follow several disabled Canadians on Twitter who have been offered MAID when they had never asked for it or brought it up. Clearly, some cases have been mishandled, even if this man is fully consenting.
6
u/Tyrannomax 29d ago
This is something that has bothered me a lot, euthanasia is not in itself a bad idea, on cases of really bad illnesses that is confirmed that are terminal or impossible to give quality of life to the person even with treatments and all the help they can, and only prolongs unfair suffering I deem it fair procedure for the dignity of a person.
But when I see it cases like theses, where the issue is not the illness itself but the system, lack of funds or help to make someone's life better than a person would deem it more approachable to find an end of their life. Or like the other case I've heard where a woman who was suffering with BPD,CPSTD, also had other neurodivergent conditions seeked assisted suicide because her therapist told her that they couldn't do "anything" to her and she was doomed to be miserable forever, which is medical malpractice.Fucked healthcare, discrimination, poverty, inhumane work conditions and isolation are killing people , and many people would have quality of life in many of their conditions if proper intervention was made to them, but depending of the country, either is useless or you have to sell your soul to pay all the things for a mere inch of relief.
Also, as an autistic person, I deem too suspicious when many cases of people seeking euthanasia are either neurodivergent , suffer from mental illnesses THAT ARE treatable if they had the proper help, or chronical illnesses that people just give a fuck about. This is giving me blatant ableism and call me conspiranoic , It's already obvious society deems us as a burden both socially and economically and if they could get rid of us to save money used on our accommodations they would , not providing healthcare to us, throwing us of the bay, and seeing many getting tired and wanting willfully get ourselves euthanised for stuff they themselves made, gives me indirect eugenics red flags181

Max talked about it in the announcement, he said that while America does offer MAID, it's only for people that doctors diagnose with a fatal condition and have about 6‐9 months of living. He then looked into Canada and learned that's only offered to Canadian citizens.
14
u/Gay_Gamer_Boi Aug 02 '26

I have no idea who this man is but after listening to portions of this stream it is so eerie hearing someone talk so calmly about something like this. I hope nothing but the best for him and that he may find a new path forward. Something of this magnitude is beyond me, I understand his situation and condition is horrible, but there has to be some other way right?

Long story short, he was kinda big in the 2010 YouTube animated scene. Got into controversy when his edgy jokes pass to actual racism. Has been trying to mature and a lot of his later work is a reflection of that. Until this, he was stuck with streaming due to overwork hurting his hand.

The way it is it sounds like his options are
Live in extreme poverty due to cost of medicine + being unable to work + extreme side effects from painkillers
Living in poverty anyway due to being unable to work + dealing with extreme constant chronic pain
It’s a terrible spot to be in

From my experience, speaking so calmly about it suggests he has completely accepted his fate and overcame the sheer fear of those actions. It's incredibly morbid, but it's the next step for this dark process.
Max has made up his mind, and the worst part is that there is literally no cure or medicine to make the pain stabilize. Fibromyalgia just...exists.
This is easily the saddest news I've heard all year.

The way he was talking through the pre recorded message felt like this was something he was contemplating for a while. This sounded like the talk of a guy that looks like he's gonna go through with it.

Max Gilardi is a very talented, intelligent and funny man. That he managed to crack jokes even as he explained his research on medically ending his own life, is the sign of incredible strength. When you're someone having suicide ideations, sometimes, having someone explaining that so calmly really puts things back into perspective.
Max is an artist that I've been following for a few years now. I've been watching his videos, following his streams... I cannot even imagine the mental fortitude it took him not only to go on for so long, but to do so while still trying to make us relax and have a good time. I cannot help but think he is a victim of a certain system here. Had he been born in a country where healthcare is handled differently, maybe things would have gone down another way.
I cannot tell if he's taking the right decision. I cannot possibly know that. He probably thought about all this much longer than I possibly could. But all I wish is for him to find peace, whatever he does. As a human being, I think he should be allowed to ultimately decide what to do with his own life.
This is, still, a tragedy to me, that such a talented man has to go through such hardships.

Someone was talking about how this mimics a thyroid issue that can be solved relatively easily with the proper hormones. I am oversimplifying but if that is the case and he sees that advice then hopefully he can get treatment and become healthy again.

He has a very checkered past but no one deserves to feel like their only options are death or poverty. No one deserves the pain of chronic conditions, especially ones that will only continue to deteriorate. It's a hard choice, but I can't say I wouldn't make the same in his position.
I hope he's found peace in this decision, and that his family, friends, and fans can also find that peace.

Dude my stomach turned reading this, i can’t believe this, he is one of my favorite content creators and animators of all time, i really hope he’s at peace.

u/HighlyUnlikely7 Aug 02 '26
He's not dead yet. He's planning assisted suicide, because he has an incredibly painful incurable disease. Even mitigation isnt super helpful.

u/NoSoyVerde1 Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26
I am aware, what i’m saying is that i hope he’s at peace with his decision and that he makes the most of the rest of his life, he really didn’t deserve this.

As someone who's going through similar mental struggles as he is, this news really hit close to home for me. I've attempted suicide three times, and everyday, I lose every bit of happiness I once had.
I'm wishing him eternal happiness in the afterlife, I hope he finds peace.

Honestly I prefer this better than him just being found dead in his home one day. Let the man die with some dignity.

I grew up watching his old work and pony vids but fell in love with his brain dump videos. I always found them creative, funny and relatable in their sadness. I wonder if he needs any financial help doing this.

Oh thank gosh. I know how much fibromyalgia sucks, but pain makes you not think straight and there’s clearly much more going on in this decision than just his pain.

Can he actually actually do it? Does he have swiss citizenship? You can't just go to another country and buy suicide, can you??
10
u/videogametes Aug 02 '26
Yes, you can. It costs about $10k, not including flights/etc out there. You don’t have to be a Swiss citizen. The company, Pegasus, handles everything except travel.

I think choosing your time and place is incredibly brave, and likely more brave in one act than many can muster in their lifetimes(I’ll absolutely include myself in this, for those reading).

Suicidal people contemplating suicide: "I don't see any reason to live, I'm so tired of people telling me to keep trying, I just need to give up"
Suicidal people when someone else is contemplating suicide: "No!! I really really want you to stay, people love you and it makes me really upset to hear you say things like this!"
It's me. I'm suicidal people.

Sad he has to leave the country to die with dignity. He is sick, he fought, he lost, now all that is left is how he handles himself after.
I sure as hell dont want to slowly fade away suffering as my body fails from a terminal illness. Can't work, can't take care of myself... I'm out. Do I get to do it with dignity or a bottle of pills in my tub.

u/ConsequenceFeisty252 Aug 02 '26
This is proof we live in a broken world. There should be no situation besides things we haven't yet found a cure for that make euthanasia the best option. A good world would not make poverty less dignified than death. Yet here we are.

Some day, for everyone, there will be a point where the pain of living overtakes the benefits of living. No matter what Max does, all I hope is that he will find peace in his decision.

u/Tashawatie Aug 02 '26
The scariest part in my research of also having Fibromyalgia is how many people use it as a legitimate option.
I'm so scared of so much MORE pain and exhaustion, but I can absolutely understand why it's become an option for many.

yeah,,,, this is pretty much how i've been feeling since i watched his stream. like, i get it. fibro is an extremely debilitating condition for those who suffer from it, and unfortunately, many of them don't see much improvement in their symptoms over time. it just tends to get worse the older they get. the way Max describes his life sounds incredibly stressful and disabling, and while i personally don't suffer from anything like fibro, i used to get really painful migraines before going on meds and i understand the pain that comes with feeling like you're just an unproductive waste of space who can't do anything because your body hurts too much to do even simple things. except that sort of pain is something Max has to deal with constantly every single day.
i don't want him to go. i respect him immensely as an artist and ideally i want there to be a better solution or accommodation for every single person so we won't ever have to lose people like him. the idea of an artist who i grew up watching for over a decade now passing away fills me with a profound sense of empty sadness and dread. but i completely understand why he planned to go out on his own accord and i respect his autonomy to make this kind of choice for his own life. even still though, i really fucking wish things could have gone differently.

I can't even say anything at this point, aside from the fact that this news has been depressing.
I'm not sure if this is what he would've wanted it, but I think we should all keep an archive of every piece he has done throughout his entire career.
It's been an honour to have him bring an impact on our lives.

u/Underscores_Are_Kool Aug 02 '26
The self hate was dripping from the rationale he gave. Honestly there's a lot more than just physical health problems and depression and I find it sick that a country would allow this to happen.
End of life or unimaginable pain, yes. When one of the main issues is occasionally getting brain fog, causing you to struggle to find your words, occasionally stammering and thinking that you have a squeaky voice when you sound totally normal, makes this majorly concerning.
And another reason he gave, the financial issues. He's an OG Newgrounds creator. You really think he could crowdfund a basic living income? How much could a single tweet from Oney or Egoraptor raise?
The suicide booth from Futurama was supposed to be satire. I'm worried that it's becoming reality.
