My will to play minecraft as soon as I build my first base with a crafting table and bed

441

u/Frosthound1 26d ago

For real. The moment I have a basic base set up, I just go "now what?" Then wander in circles until I get bored

134

u/Wide-Screen-650 26d ago

Give yourself a goal, whenever I play I usually give myself some sort of goal to strive for. Like making cool base/village, digging a chunk or making a zoo.

71

u/Frosthound1 26d ago

That's the thing, Just want to wander.

38

u/WolvesAreCool2461 26d ago

Then wander! Don't set up a solid, permanent base. Try just wandering the world, setting up little temporary outposts every once in a while if you find something interesting.

Sometimes the world can make some really interesting generation.

10

u/Rude_Ice_4520 25d ago

You can keep a bag full of compasses that lead back to each bolthole.

2

u/WolvesAreCool2461 25d ago

Or a book with coordinates if you use those. Thats what I do, got a book in game with coordinates to ocean monuments, ancient cities, home... Whatever really. BUT I also keep the important stuff in my notes app on my phone just in case.

haven't tried any but i've seen multiple modpacks for a more "nomadic" playstyle and they look REALLY good

4

u/JohannesJoshua 25d ago

Me personally I can play as long as my friends are playing with me.

If I play alone, I just focus on defeating the dragon and getting elytra.

this is how I feel about most of the Civilization game series

once my country is "established" and I enter the next phase I just get bored and start a new game

Do y'all just not play with mods or something?

That's just GregTech.

3

u/unfortunatebag 26d ago

Do you think expecting an endlessly entertaining loop and being entertained are the same thing?

2

u/termperedtantrum 26d ago

This is the reason publishers thought everything needed to be forever games.

9

u/Frosthound1 26d ago

No, I play on console. Mods aren't gonna make a difference anyways, I just like wondering in circles

10

u/Impossible_Ad_6115 26d ago

Not just that, if I want a mod I have to spend real life money, as console can't mod outside the marketplace

3

u/Frosthound1 26d ago

Yeah. The unfortunate state of bedrock

2

u/PointsOfXP 26d ago

And do what? It's all too much and overwhelming now without mods. Where to start and the time you'll spend getting there outweighs anything else.

2

u/unfortunatebag 26d ago

And do what?

I like building a rocket and going to the moon.

You dont try to play all 300 mods at once. You just pick one mod that looks neat and watch a couple youtube videos.

Also mods save you time in the part of the game you're familiar with. They just add a shitload more to do after.

Me too, modded terraria made me addicted to high difficulty and progression. Do you have any good progression Minecraft mods with a checklist?

71

u/Simplejack615 Dess cracker 26d ago

Tbf, terraria has high difficulty and progression in the base game

29

u/HereButQueer 26d ago

i’ve not played in a few years and me and my partner started up a new playthrough since it’s her first time, expert mode and i feel so washed. i don’t remember skeletron being this difficult 😭

14

u/Simplejack615 Dess cracker 26d ago

Yeah, he wasn’t

Expert mode changes boss attacks and Ai. Skeletron now shoots skulls after a hand is broken (or is at low enough health)

Additionally, the hands give the skull higher defense, requiring you to defeat them

5

u/HereButQueer 26d ago

i’ve beaten expert mode before, without tons of issue. the only boss i ever really struggle with is plantera, and expert golem i remember was annoying. i know i can do it, i just feel like im washed, but my partner hasn’t ever done it before either. gonna try again in a couple days when either of us ain’t working but opening the dungeon gives us the best accessories we can get pre hardmode/potentially the whole game (specifically talking about the cobalt shield here)

6

u/cumulo-nimbus-95 26d ago

Skeletron is a bit of a difficulty spike in expert mode. Even with the added damage and new AI, you can kind of tank through the other bosses. Skeletron you really can’t. The spinning skull attack does too much damage and leaves you with status effects, and if you get hit once you can’t really escape from the rest of the hits. When expert mode was new I recall it being a bit of a wall for me.

2

u/HereButQueer 26d ago

i played expert mode exclusively for a good amount of time, and don’t remember him being so much of a challenge. i think i just kinda forgot. but i remember golem in expert mode feeling harder but plantera for me is the one boss i always struggle against

if you want high difficulty and progression i might have THE modpack for you

167

u/SomethingWetAndMoist 26d ago

High difficulty and progression that doesn't take ~2000 hours to complete.

46

u/Time-Green 26d ago

Rebirth of the Night honestly, it’s well balanced and has a lot of progression (and difficulty).

3

u/Mallohi 26d ago

Wow. I know it's still in devolopment but it's been a really long time since I heard that modpack. How is it as a whole right now? Still unfinished?

2

u/Time-Green 26d ago

Always unfinished, it’s a GTNH situation in that it is an eternal passion project. It is absolutely a full modpack. The only thing that ever stood out to me is the quest book having some empty chapters

57

u/Taenshik 26d ago

You aren't supposed to complete it

19

u/All_Work_All_Play 26d ago

Ahh, so Factorio it is then.

3

u/NullShot 26d ago

'Completing' Factorio is not unachievable. I'd argue this sentiment is more due to the type of players that gravitate to the game and their lack of contentment with the systems they used to complete it. You can always make something more efficient. Then again there are similarities to Minecraft where arbitrary goals arise from the game systems themselves. 'I want to be able to produce 100 science per minute' or 'I want to be able to manufactire a nuclear reactor in the space of a bread box'.

3

u/DumbestComicsNerd 26d ago

You gotta make your own checklist. Get a ton of vanilla+ mods to make the basegame feel more complete. Think Alexs Mobs, Alexs Caves, L_Enders Cataclysm, BetterEnd, BetterNether, Mowzies Mobs, Backwoods etc. then make a google doc. Write down "Early Game" "Mid Game" "Late Game" "Post Game" and then start writing goals under each one like a bucket list. Stuff like items you wanna get, builds you wanna make, mobs you wanna tame, structures you wanna discover etc.

Also get a friend using Essential mod. This becomes infinitely more fun if youve got atleast one person with you.

I was the exact same way as you until I did all these steps and now I feel satisfied and im actually having fun with survival for the first time ever.

u/legohamsterlp 26d ago

2

u/SGTX12 26d ago

I agree and I'm agreeing with you. I was just posting a rebuttal to the idea that enchanting and potions are meant to get you through from iron to diamond rather than coming after you get diamonds.

4

u/CapableDatabase6923 25d ago

copper is a nice throwaway material

like you know youre going to die in this battle and lose all of your cool items, you just grab the copper tools and go blasting

5

u/Deaffin 25d ago

Kinda sounds like you're dying because you keep putting on shitty gear and telling yourself it's dying time.

2

u/Left1Brain 25d ago

To be fair to that guy. I’d much rather use copper equipment against the horde of creepers squatting outside my house than the stuff I actually care about.

2

u/Kagamime1 25d ago

God forbid it takes you (checks notes) 1 hour to get the second best armor in the game

→ More replies (2)
→ More replies (2)

28

u/Shim_Slady72 26d ago

The problem is that you go from wood to stone to iron tools in less than 10 minutes, full iron stuff and maybe a diamond pick in about an hour.

Then it's a massive time sink to get further because you need dozens of diamonds for armor, tons of xp for enchantments and lots of work to get full netherite, and if you want to enchant it all without setting up an afk XP farm you could be playing for weeks.

And then what? Fight the ender dragon? Anything above iron is overkill for that. I love Minecraft but the progression in vanilla has been terribly paced for pretty much the entire games lifespan.

Vintage Story is the game

→ More replies (2)

21

u/-Mandarin 26d ago

Too long until next stage? You can get full diamond in less than 5 hours. I thought the point here was that progression happens so quickly it all feels pointless..

31

u/-ragingpotato- 26d ago

That's because you know how to get there. You know what level to look in, how to avoid the monsters, how to get fortune in 30 minutes. It's so badly designed it manages to be irrelevant for experienced players and grossly difficult and tedious for inexperienced players, it truly serves nobody.

13

u/Captain_skulls 26d ago

Not really? Ever since caves and cliffs diamonds have become SUPER easy to stumble upon while caving casually. Hell, I sometimes happen upon diamonds before I even have iron tools.

3

u/Chesey_ 26d ago

Whenever they made the change that lowered the Y axis into negative numbers was the point I felt getting diamonds became just fucking annoying. You have to go so deep underground to get them that it's now a chore to do so via just exploring caves, and strip mining is tedious because deepslate takes ages to mine through.

Nowadays it's a case that I will get just enough diamonds to get an enchanting table and rely on iron gear until I can get a fortune pickaxe. Then, once I have the fortune pick and can get some pickaxes with efficiency to speed up deepslate mining I will strip mine for diamonds. The issue now is by doing this I get enough diamonds in one hit to not really have to go and do it again. So I've gone from 0 - 100

I get why they made the change, it has made it more work and more of a challenge but equally it's just not fun or satisfying. The first time I get diamonds in a new world it's like thank god for that, now I can get out of being 150 blocks below the surface. Then the next time I go looking for them I find a few veins and I get enough to sort me out for ages.

2

u/Aggravating_Pause385 26d ago

You can still strip mine at level 12 like the good old days.

If anything I would want the progression to take longer, like an hour in to starting a new world with friends we usually would start getting diamonds so we install mods to slow us down hella

2

u/Lansan1ty 26d ago

Randomly reinstalled FTB app and decided to try StoneBlock 4 yesterday. Didn't watch any lets plays, nobody influenced me to try it. I have no idea where this will lead but I love that the quest system is guiding me along as I figure it out. Was watching Pluribus on the other monitor while playing and I'm excited to play more today.

2

u/virus_chara 20d ago

In later version, I've found diamonds before iron with underwater caves... now Netherite and Elytra is too far away cuz I forget that it's a game and just waltz to a ton of cave systems, mineshafts, and building artificial surface land based on MC Legacy tutorial worlds.

The flame in the flood fixes this for me It forces your base to be small and constantly moving forward so you can never reach a "ill just go lick my wounds at home" state of gameplay

Works really well when played as a single long run too

4

u/cheesegoat 26d ago

This is me with factorio after you get flying bots.

I love belts and arms so much. My buddy and I played a game together and once we got to the flying bot part it just sucked all the joy of organizing belts out of the game. I kept building belts anyway but it felt so unnecessary once I saw a bajillion bots unload a train.

3

u/Palanki96 26d ago

I'm a step further even below that, but with Satisfactory. I love the early game but i dropped it when it was time to actually satis my factory

That's why Once Human and Palworld were the only survival-crafting games i've enjoyed. Automated bases where automation is solved by throwing a creature and they will do everything while i can play the actual game

3

u/WWHandsome_ 25d ago

I mean, the whole point of satisfactory is the automation, there's no "play the actual game" besides that

not to be that guy, but maybe try vintage story if minecraft's progression makes you lose the will to play?

8

u/Lawsoffire 26d ago

And if you still lose your will to play after getting iron, that's like a 50-100 hour journey on your first playthrough.

20

u/AmaterasuWolf21 look! someone thinks they know better about my own country 26d ago

But I didn’t grew up with Vintage Story 😫😩

31

u/Profane_Champion 26d ago

I know nostalgia's a strong force, but don't let it keep you from trying something new you might enjoy

Iron and Steel are the top of VS's tool tiers, with finding and refining metals being a much more involved and delibirate process than simply spelunking and dumping ore into a furnace. The crafting and building mechanics have more depth and feel like part of the world, too!

4

u/Will_Yeeton 26d ago

Modding is also suuuuper easy, with mods from the website's official database installing seamlessly into the game's in-built mod manager. You can do a LOT to grind a little bit of tedium off of some more annoying systems, or totally overhaul other ones. SmithingPlus is a personal favorite.

1

u/AmaterasuWolf21 look! someone thinks they know better about my own country 26d ago

Honestly, I think I stick with Minecraft solely for nostalgia, it's the strongest game I have this for, all the ones from my childhood I still replay because they're fun

But in Minecraft? I go to creative to remake the same things I did in the past and begrudgingly use concrete because it's way better than wool despite the fact I used wool back then

9

u/ReBearded 26d ago

VS is pretty great, I played Minecraft when it was still in alpha, before the wikis and the explosion in popularity

VS gave me that same sense of wonder the first time I played, and even tho its just blocks, the views and sense of progression are just spectacular

4

u/totally_not_ace 26d ago

As someone who grew up with minecraft as well, you really need to get out there and try other stuff. Don't let yourself be trapped by nostalgia. Minecraft will still be there.

2

u/Swimming_Doughnut196 DS2/RLcraft are Peak Yall just have a Skill Issue 26d ago

Hytale is a good Alternative too! (Also for modpacks I recommend Beyond Depth and Chocolate Flavoured)

3

u/totally_not_ace 26d ago

I really don't think Hytale is that great of alternative to people with these complaints about minecraft. It follows the same kind of progression, it just has a more combat focused gameplay loop, kinda similar to Valheim imo. Vintage Story on the other hand progression is more tied to your resource security and meeting shelter need, and theres constant environmental pressure. Material progression is just one of many ways you can advance and usually secondary to securing food and warmth.

10

u/PixeltzOfSpook 26d ago edited 26d ago

well then

Datapacks are built into minecraft as a way to modify existing game data, like changing textures, recipes, mob behaviour, item durabilities, enchantments and what they do, block interactions etc.

Plugins require a plugin loader and mainly change commands, and in-world restrictions so like, an authenticator plugin, grief prevention, restored skins for cracked players, etc.

Mods are Java code injected directly into the Minecraft game source code using a mod loader (2 so famous that literally no one uses anything else: Fabric and Forge) and these are able to add entirely new content, aside from being able to modify base content; that's why some fabric server mods are vanilla compatible.

6

u/makinax300 white 26d ago

Datapacks don't affect code, just data. Mcfunctions are just commands. Recipes and loot tables and basic biomes are just data.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/pgp555 I WILL reference random shit 26d ago

Real talk, what's the difference?

20

u/Asquirrelinspace 26d ago

Datapacks alter how the game works through in-game native support. Mods are new code running on your computer

8

u/Clarthen1 26d ago

And every data pack can be wrapped in a mod, so you don’t have to enable it every time you create a new world, and you won’t get experimental features warning every time you open your world.

5

u/Artscout_ 26d ago

A datapack is essentially something that is building on top of the already existing Minecraft game, so using stuff like commands and resource packs to create something new.

A mod does the same thing, but can also write it's own stuff that's completely unrelated to the base game in Java. For example, you can add items texture and whatever using a datapack, but using a mod you can for example add a block that allows you to connect to the real internet, which is not something base Minecraft allows.

A modpack is a collection of mods, typically configured to work together.

14

u/adamcoffeelovs 26d ago

i love this data pack bro, it felt like rediscovering Minecraft again

or I play survival and then get sick of making chests to store shit I'll never need while never being able to get enough of what I want. Maybe make it to the nether. Never to the end. Get bored and by the time I go to play it's a new patch and I don't want to refresh mods and it ends up another year later.

I mean hey, this mod does kind of have the perfect solution for that. It introduces shulkers early game. Just 9 leather and a chest for a shulker. I'd say that's pretty good

3

u/Most_Jellyfish_8465 26d ago

Matcha flavored gives you shulkers in the early game and lets you combine tools so they take up less space in your hotbar. In the video he made for it, he has a section talking about inventory management and how he addresses it.

Vintage story makes that early game loop essentially the full game. Getting iron goes from 15 minutes to several hours.

10

u/Lawsoffire 26d ago edited 26d ago

"Several hours" is an understatement. Especially for a first playthrough.

Getting to copper is "several hours" even if you know what you are doing. Like 2-4 hours (You have to find a place to settle, a good amount of food, storage space, make a kiln and a crucible and let it fire etc before you can even think about searching or panning for it) if you know, 5-10 if you don't.

Getting bronze can be a lot more than that depending on how lucky your hunt for tin is.

Getting iron after that is a proper journey.

Think we reached 70 hours played, in co op, before getting iron tools on our first playthrough.

...And that's not even talking about steel.

4

u/Will_Yeeton 26d ago

I put in like 60 hours in my personal world so far and I'm still just on bronze. But my farm is huge and beautiful and my cellar is full of pies and soups so life is good.

3

u/Lawsoffire 26d ago

and that's really the best part of Vintage Story.

It's so incredibly cozy to be stocking up for winter, doing all the homestead things, improving your home.

"Cozy games" usually fall flat for me because there isn't much meaning or risk to anything. VS massively changes that for me.

2

u/animelivesmatter dangerous levels of autism 25d ago

And tbh having a huge and beautiful farm is actually more important than getting iron in this game anyway. And I say this as someone who has steel in my main world lmao

2

u/Some-Sector-2015 25d ago

Sounds fucking awfulĀ

2

u/animelivesmatter dangerous levels of autism 25d ago

In my first world I wasn't able to find any tin and ended up going with bismuth bronze instead.

Then I ended up mining through two tin veins to get to a hematite vein, and ignored them because I didn't need the tin anymore.

and then theres true endgame... chiseling.

ALL of it is for chiseling. copper? thats when its first unlocked. bronze and iron? better chisel and hammer. steel? get to making your dream castle.

at first you think is ok, you might try it once or twice... and then your chiseling your whole house and the very land you built it on

u/Ailyx 26d ago

90% of survival games once you realize it's rinse and repeat at each tier.

6

u/Bionic_Ferir 26d ago

It's my biggest complaint about the game. There is no real reason to do anything. I understand it's a sandbox but people aren't intrinsically motivated simple as. If we were there wouldn't be such a meme about a multiplayer server with friends that dies within a week.

There is no real reason to explore, there is no real reason to interact with half the mechanics in the game. No real reason to make half the blocks.

u/MidnightOnTheWater 26d ago edited 26d ago

Minecraft has never really "evolved" from its core indie roots imo. So much of the progression and iconography is sacred to the fan base and gaming. Mojang has dug a hole for itself and can only provide incremental variations to the gameplay loop or add things that sidestep the OG content entirely.

Minecraft was never meant to be a huge live service project spanning decades, it was originally just a passion project stemming from one depressed Swedish guy that blew up.

I always get such a tonal whiplash playing the game versus experiencing any media outside of it. The game always gets me in a melancholic, bittersweet mood. Then I see ads for the newest crossover/remember the movie/story mode and its just so jarring.

The best adaption of Minecraft has to be Steve in Smash Bros. He is a silent protagonist yet is intentionally aloof and self preserving. His characterization is cheeky but not outright malicious.

5

u/Ailyx 26d ago

Yeah agreed! I think what separates the bad from good ones are two things:

  • immersion in the world
  • a fun resource gathering gameplay

3

u/n2ygsh1wwp5j 26d ago

Once I realize any game's artificial rewards and grinding are a thin veil, I turn towards creativity, competition, socializing, etc. I don't care to be the millionth person to get some achievement if the path wasn't fun, so i set my own goals and reasons to play.

14

u/EngineWriter722 26d ago

My will to play after I finish making my first house

12

u/lukethedank13 26d ago

Try Vintage Story. Just going from stone tools to copper can take 10h. Getting iron is a multistep process and finding a deposit of its ore an ordeal.

If you play minecraft for its survival progression elements VS does them much better.

8

u/Lawsoffire 26d ago

Lot of VS recommendations in here, its lovely to see how much the game has spread.

Really is the "grown up, survival-focused Minecraft" i always wanted.

2

u/lukethedank13 26d ago

Havent started up MC once since i got it. Only reason i keep it about is because i got some ridiculous survival builds like a tower with solid gold roof on it.

I can't really play it without loads of mods, I guess that's what happens when you play a game for over a decade

6

u/CalzLight 26d ago

Not really, it’s what happens when you play with loads of mods

3

u/TalesOfMetamorphosis 26d ago

Not really, it's what happens when you are not exactly the right type of mentally ill to enjoy vanilla minecraft long term

(Source; Someone who has hundreds of hours in both vanilla and modded minecraft. I like to build farms and pretty buildings what can I say?)

10

u/GoofyAhhJuandale 26d ago

Go play base game Vintage Story and see how fast you'd get to iron.

8

u/Zombiesoldier072 26d ago

This why i almost exclusively use copper so that when i get iron it feels like diamond

8

u/PocketPB white 26d ago

Same, thinking about playing Minecraft is more fun than actually playing Minecraft

6

u/The_Wattsatron 26d ago

You gotta play a big modpack homie, bring back some of the magic.

5

u/Swimming_Doughnut196 DS2/RLcraft are Peak Yall just have a Skill Issue 26d ago

Thats kinda why I've been addicted to Modded MC for a while now.

Though, if I wanna wind down I'd hop onto a server with my friends and just build.

In summary, Modded MC is where I like to Grind, Get stronger and fight bosses. Vanilla (and some (actually good) Vanilla+ packs) is where I just like to build and wind down.

In almost every Minecraft world I create, after getting wood and tools I build a house and then immediately start digging around it for the length of about 20 chunks and the width of 10. Then I mine until I find everything I want - coal, gold, iron, etc. On my current world I stopped for the time being because I decided my house was insufficient and started building a new house out of cobblestone, which means that I first need to take down the giant monolith of cobblestone that's up to the build limit made from all the excess cobblestone I collected from The Hole

u/Annual_One_8466 26d ago

Meanwhile Vintage Story players

I'm only ever having fun after I get the elytras, full enchanted netherite and a steady supply of good food, everything before is just the grind that makes it worth it.

2

u/daflufferkinz 26d ago

Try GregTech New Horizons

2

u/Mag12383 26d ago

My drive usually dies as soon as I get an established house and storage room. That’s why I’m working on a big ass castle rn instead

2

u/Terrible-Election512 I'LL GIGGITY LOIS AND MAKE MORE SONS OF THE MASK 26d ago

2

u/SuddenSenseOfSonder 26d ago

That's why I started playing story/goal driven mods. More to look forward to that just the regular progression _. If I had to recommend one it would be Corsair: The Seven Treasures with projectmmo disabled.

2

u/awakelist 26d ago

i just play older versions or use mods. it helps a lot. plus using diamonds as a motivator is a good way to stay engaged until the nether and stuff.

2

u/AdmiralSnailMail 26d ago

I enjoy the iron phase more than the post diamond phase.

2

u/Associate_External 25d ago

I turned on keep inventory and things has been looking better. I'm not restarting to strip mine for another 4 hours just because my diamond gear got dropped into the lava.

2

u/MaximusLazinus 25d ago

Minecraft was amazing when in alpha/beta times and the idea was fresh. Now I can't play Minecraft without getting bored unless it's heavily modded

2

u/Redray98 25d ago

I used to spend literally months looking for diamonds very slowly in my survival solo worlds and I ended up making multiple bases. Bridges that connected plateaus in the Savanah. Built a simple Redstone crop harvester.

5

2

u/CorrectBuffalo749 26d ago

I love Create.

1

u/Quincy_Hater 26d ago

this is why i use copper items

1

u/Party-Poison519 Have you tried the medicine drug? 26d ago

I've even playing Minecraft 10 years and I only started playing survival last year, still have yet to actually get netherite or anything, still fun thoughĀ

1

u/neogeoman123 26d ago

Get a very stupid and long goal and the 2 week minecraft phase will turn into 2 years. My ass decided to build an enter the gungeon homage at the start of last year and I'm only now getting kinda close to finishing floor 2 of 5 (they are very big).

1

u/StaticSystemShock 26d ago

Have iron tools, use wooden ones because you can just make some from every tree and the iron ones are precious so you never use them.

That's why I only use Copper armor and tools.
