It's one of the worst 'not intended to be terrible' superpowers to have for a person who wants to be good. And if you're unlucky enough to not be able to turn it off, it's only worse.
is doctor doom possibly the best marvel character ever? I don't dab too much in comics but every time I see a panel with this mf he's always spewing something based
Oh I’ve read most of the Krakoa period, I still hate them.
It’s the worst quite a few of them have been in a while, still just more fuel on the “Xavier ain’t shit” fire though.
Also you cannot convince me that allowing Nathaniel fucking Essix onto the Quiet Council was even remotely a good idea in ANY universe. I don’t cate how good his genetic engineering skills are. That motherfucker should be dead ON SIGHT for at least half of the Krakoan population.
And MAGNETO working with a literal fucking Nazi scientist should never have gotten past being fanfiction,
Isn't a like a core defining trait of his being that he was a young powerless boy getting fucked over by the nazis?
Learning the depths of human discrimination for something as simple as religion or skin color, and then seeing the writing on the wall when mutants became a thing, with him being not just one of them, but a powerful one at that.
Then deciding that humanity can't be trusted to not lynch something as different as a mutant based on the above, and taking up arms against humanity for the eventual clash between humans and mutants?
Knowing this, and the myriad of tomfuckery I assume Sinister has done, shouldn't Magneto have been the loudest and most vehement about rejecting Sinister from the Quiet Council?
Also: Much like Juggernaut, Sinister isn't a mutant, but a mutate - breaking the whole ethno-state rule they use to deny entry to other mutates like Spider-Man and Deadpool.
I only just found out about this whole Krakoa thing like a week ago, I'm not really an X-Men fan but from an outside POV it sounds... incredibly in poor taste? Or perhaps some kind of fucked up meta commentary on authoritarianism and apartheid states that went way too far... idk. Seems like everyone is very correct to hate on it.
Krakoa very much started out as a standard Hickman story where people act very out of character fully corrupted by power that would probably be rejected by the end like his illuminati secret war stuff. But the problem is one krakoa sold massively since it was the first time marvel wasn't sabotaging the xmen in like a decade due to corporate politics and two writers really loved it. So then krakoa which was supposed to only be act 1 of 3 gets extended and Hickman leaves marvel for a bit as a writer since he got an exclusive contract to some other site for a few years.
I mean it depends from character to character. And krakoa was liked by fans of the xmen. Especially now since the post krakoa Era has been very aimless.
Absolutely. They also abducted Redd Richard's kid and mindwiped Richards' memory of him, said not to Danger being on Krakoa for not being mutant despite her being basically family to the X-Men, committed genocide on Terra Verde, Xavier tried to save Krakoa by eradicating humanity, and so much more. Krakoa has done horrible damage to the X-Men and I honestly don't think I can even like most of them anymore.
They REALLY play the "as long as you are useful..." to the max, to the point that if you put yourself in the boots of any non xmen member that squad is a disaster starting to happen all the time.
isn't part of magneto's whole deal that he was a victim of the fucking holocaust? this is like having John The Electrician work with Professor I-Want-To-Kill-Every-Electrician
Alright, allow me to adjust my comment.
John the Electrician working with Jimmy Supermurder, who served the now deceased Professor I-Want-To-Kill-Every-Electrician by making him weapons, technology, and plans.
1: Krakoa.
2: Krakoa.
3: Wouldn't you guess it, Krakoa.
Like 90% of the reason people hate the X-Men currently is due to how genuinely awful they all were during Krakoa. Inviting known super terrorists to help lead the island, lowkey kidnapping children, that shit Beast did to that one island nation (honestly Beast could fill a list on his own), etc.
a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. honestly, it's the honest ones you want watch out for. because you can never predict when they're going to do something incredibly stupid
hands down one of my favourite panels I've ever seen, the followup is just so great. Armor defending Jeff because he's cute and storm just being upset about her head being in his mouth.
Even on a fundamental level, ignoring…everything else, the premise of Krakoa is so shit. What am I supposed to feel when it's literally just an ethnostate? “YIPPEE!!!”???
I haven't read the Krakoa comics myself, but I kind of hate it conceptually. Even before learning about any of the bad things they did, I never liked the idea. Cause like, yeah lets just take the minority allegory group and turn them into an ethnostate, that sounds like a good idea
To be fair it seems like half the stories are about how yea this is a terrible idea and beyond messy. How much that was intended is a different question.
To explain it more, there was an island nation during the Krakoa era that got close to figuring out how to make medicine better than the super medicine Krakoa was basically using as a way to force the world to acknowledge it as a nation. So Beast took initiative, sabotaged everything, and eventually got the entire island turned into a parasitic tree hellscape with everyone on the island dead. It's super fucked up, and just one of the many things Beast did in that era that constitutes as 'super fucked up'
Hank as a whole was acting like he needed to be the most evil person possible. How tf was this fuzzy gentle giant competing with Sinister in terms of being fucked?
It’s character assassination of the highest order. What made Beast compelling is that dichotomy of his appearance compared to his intelligence and personality. Taking it away is… disgusting. What, are we taking pages from Dark Beast now?!
There was this small nation facing economical problems called Terra Verde, which was creating plant based medicine that could rival Krakoa's. This would against their best interests since their monopoly on medical technology was their main bargaining chip with other countries (they literally cured death and cancer, then gatekept it).
So, Beast secretly altered the plants to lobotimize the President's son. The President, thinking that the plants were responsible, shut down the whole operation. After the X-Men left, it turned out that the altered plants had the unintended side effect of turning people into infectious, bloodthirsty zombies.
A while later, the X-Men came back to check on them since the whole nation had apparently "gone dark," which caused them to discover the zombies. The final panel was them surrounded by countless corpses of infected Terra Verde citizens. This whole atrocity was then covered up because mutant reputation would be irreparably damaged if the public ever found out that they killed a country of innocents.
For a while, the scale of the damage they caused was kept ambiguous. One would think it was a complete genocide given that the entire country had "gone dark," but maybe this wasn't the case since a few Terra Verde ambassadors were present later on in the Hellfire. Ambassadors that were... being mind controlled by Emma Frost to remain obedient. Somehow, the ambassadors broke free. The quiet council decided to pay them off by donating 1 billion each year to what remains of Terra Verde to help pay for the death and damage they caused. This was, of course, in exchange for them not telling the public of their crimes.
Here’s something I’ve always pondered - unlike minorities in real life, mutants can boast all sorts of dangerous superpowers, giving people a reason to fear them.
As such, I wonder if there’s an X-Men story that sheds light on those rational concerns, while making clear mutants do not deserve to be persecuted.
That’s just the X-men in general. Yes there are dangerous mutants like Magneto, Sabertooth, Mystique, Blob etc. but anti-mutant humans tend to go after innocent and good mutants like the X-men (when they’re not written to be jackasses) or the ones that get really sucky mutations like that one kid who’s power was that he explodes, once.
or the ones that get really sucky mutations like that one kid who’s power was that he explodes, once.
The xmen imo would be good representation if ALL mutants had shitty to mediocre powers. Or at the very least not beyond wolverine level of power. Like that guy whos only mutation is being a chicken is Genuinely good. But that wouldn't be "interesting".
Edit:
After thinking about it more. People like wolverine, cyclops, nightcrawler are all the sort of great low level grounded powers i mean.
But then you have people like Jean Magento and storm running around and its like nah.
I might be okay with the concept of an omega level mutant if it was like... a once in a generation thing. Like the avatar. But you have people like storm, xavier, iceman, magneto, Franklin Richards and others running around and its just hard for that fear to not feel warranted.
I mean I don’t think Franklin counts considering he was born from people mutated by cosmic radiation and not the x gene
And the issue is that instead of going after the powerful mutants the lynch mobs and government agencies go after the weak mutants that have nothing to do with the x men or magneto’s group
Why do you think so many mutants join the x man or magneto?
Because everyone doesn’t give them a choice not to
Like bro why is the government sending killer robots to kill the guy with the mutation that gives him a flexible neck or pink skin
Yup. Because the innocent and good mutants tend to restrain themselves from hurting other people, thus they become easy targets. Its the reason why the Purifiers choose to attack the Xavier School after a large majority of the students were depowered after M-Day.
The X-Men went from "the fight for acceptance against bigotry is slow and painful" to "we should just start an ethnostate and openly say we're naturally superior."
The entire point is them being forced to try another way because co-existence wasn’t working and they wanted to have a world where mutants weren’t being hunted for sport for a few minutes. Pretty reasonable, all things considered.
Then they were forced to realise that that also doesn’t work.
The X-Men or mutants as a whole constantly proving right those who are afraid of them, and in turn racists and bigots constantly proving folks like Sinister and Magneto right
Just know Krakoa was fantastic but it really exposed when the mutants finally get the independence they for so long wanted… they end up just as fucked up and corrupt as every other nation out there
I love krakoa It was definitely the best mutant era for them, and I really like the world building on their nation, but yeah it really expose that a lot of them are a bunch of assholes.
A lot of them are really annoying, hypocrites, or just straight up evil. And especially after Krakoa, they proved that when they’re on top they’ll be awful to almost everyone including themselves. The X-men are too weak to dominate and too arrogant to coexist so they live in constant disarray. Like Cyclops said, they’ll never win.
You have the telepaths who are famous for their love of invading people’s privacy or manipulating them. Almost all of them had or still have a deep lack of respect for other people and no issue messing with them. The X-men are weirdly tolerant of morally reprehensible activities as long as it’s not on mutants. Which leads to my next point;
They take solidarity to an absolutely absurd degree and treat any non-mutant like trash when they can. Even if they assisted the X-men countless times, if you don’t have that gene you’re chopped liver. Mr.Sinister (who worked with Nazis) was allowed into the island and given both immunity and a position on their counsel. Meanwhile, after grooming Franklin Richard’s and pushing him away from his family, they kicked him to the dirt the second they learned he wasn’t an actual mutant. Namor obliterated Wakanda and Storm sided with him over her own husband. A mutant named Evil McMolester could kill 100 infants and eat another dozen but would be let into Krakoa before Spider-Man.
You have the leaders who are different flavors of evil or misguided. There are lists upon lists and videos upon videos about how bad Xavier can be. Hiding the deaths of an entire squad of X-men that included one of Scott’s brothers, screwing with the minds of almost everyone he’s led, enslaving the danger room, he’s got a mad rep sheet.
There’s Magneto who’s gone from flat out evil to unlikable. And despite renouncing his old views people still cling to that phase and say he was in the right (he wasn’t). Which funny enough is the only thing he actually has in common with Malcom X. I mainly dislike him for how he treats his kids. Yeah the genocide attempts are bad but he’s a real sucky father.
Then you have Cyclops, whose most well known feats are stepping out on his clone wife and actual son, cheating on his real wife with another psychic, and losing his mind with the Phoenix force. Don’t get me twisted he’s the best here and has done a lot to atone for these things but it’s hilarious how the moral peak of their leadership has such a shady reputation. He’s also partially responsible for Beast losing his mind by having him do some messed up stuff. But hey after they killed beast they cloned his mind from when he was younger, shoved it into a body and called it a day.
I’m night crawlers strongest solider so even if he ate a baby I’d be hush about it. Being fr though he’s like a moral center for the X-men so he’s got a clean sheet generally.
Wolverine however has done some shady stuff. The most popular stuff was done by ultimate Wolverine, not canon to main comics but in that universe he tries to have sex with a teenage Mary Jane after Jean Grey decides to put him into Peter Parker’s body to punish him (with Peter as collateral). That’s where the popular panel of Spiderman dunking on the X men came from.
The phoenix force thing is kinda bullshit. He had it under control spread over 5 different mutants and the avengers kinda pushed all of the phoenix force onto him, THEN he lost his mind and the avengers were like "SEE!? WE WERE RIGHT".
My main one is how they refused to let Deadpool onto Krakoa, despite allowing far more dangerous characters on there (like Apocalypse and Mr. Sinister). The only character who wasn't a piece of shit to him at that time was Rogue ( I know it's not the worst thing they did, but I just personally find it annoying)
Eh, originally they didn’t let him in because a computer said he had a 97% chance of blowing the whole place up but apparently after going on a mission with Wolverine he was offered a place in krakoa (though seriously, why would they hesitate to let Deadpool in but not the evil guy who helped Nazis..)
What the fuck hasn't he done actually. The guy has been on a 40 year long corruption arc and is currently the main villain of the current X-Men book as he plans to release a Virus that kills any humans that enters in contact with it.
Heck just look the guys who Beast surrounds himself currently (he is the guy in the middle, known as thr chairman)
Pretend to be gay, sell a woman to sinister so he can kill her with experiments, commit genocide, try and commit it more after being caught, mass mind control on the survivors of his genocide, teamed up with his evil self who's only difference is he doesn't know Charles so it confirms beast is just evil
I'm low-key a normie when it comes to comics but it feels a little weird to basically make everyone who is a mutant an X-Man, like DC has meta humans which is way more umbrella than Marvels X-Men but it feels like any hero who is a mutant in marvel is bound to be eventually wrapped up in X-Man branding in a random ass comic.
It's like they made a tool to explain why there's so many powers but made it too unique it just became a brand. That's my biggest issue with X-Men I think, it used to be a shorthand umbrella term like metahumans but eventually made anyone who was a mutant colloquial with the X-Men. I don't see many mutants who are disconnected from that web.
There are mutants that are not part of the X-Men though. Namor is one, for instance, and Squirrel Girl was one too before that was retconned for no good reason (she was still born like that so it changes literally nothing)
but the way they treat mutant powers, wanting people to stay with said powers when cures are offered, even if there are mutant powers that literally only harm the user's life
They don’t have any problem with mutants voluntarily getting rid of their mutations. The problem is giving governments ammunition to forcibly “cure” mutants.
It also reflects a pretty big discussion in the autistic community.
For reference, jean grey was petty and decided to swap the minds of wolverine and spider man during a "jean grey is a whore and the x-man's bike but it's cool because she weally woves scott" moment, despite Peter having no involvement in it. While in his body, Logan decided to fuck up Peter's reputation, and attempt to sleep with MJ (who's still a teenager). After they reswapped bodies and Peter found out what he did, he blew his top at them all
top 1 reason is if you critique its use of metaphor or allegory you get mobbed by people assuming you're racist
2 is how it forces any non-mutant character to become supremely fucking evil, even during crossovers with other marvel heroes. like cap is a beacon of hope and doing things the honest way in 99% of his appearances but suddenly has to be lowkey racist towards mutants to make their story make sense. The idea that Cap can see the good in Hulk but not any mutant is absurd.
Really any comic run that has an instance of 1 mutant(usually the asshole that would be better dead) being saved from death with the reason being, "there's not many mutant lives left," shut the fuck up we can all agree the world would be better off if you let Hulk kill Sabertooth. Heck, Jean was helping Hulk. Im sure there's more comics that have similar instances.
When I was a kid in the early 90s, I had X-Men #1 and I wanted to read the whole X-Men back catalogue.
I wasn't able to as a youth. Now, I'm an adult in 2026 and I could indeed read the whole X-Men back catalogue. But I don't want to any more.
Every time I read about what's happening in X-Men since the turn of the millennium, all I can think is how glad I am that I never emotionally invested myself in the franchise.
They, in particular Charles and Magneto, have stated multiple times that they believe themselves superior to normal humans. Not stronger, superior. In general. Magneto even refuses to call himself human. (Not that they are good to mutants, or that this is the worst they've done, but it's very telling on how bad they are)
Charles stops the creation of any kind of mutant "cure", like when Reed Richards accidentally made a device that suppresses the X-Gen (In a way that is both safe, painless and reversible), so Charles erased the memory of the device from his memory, deliberately made it so Reed knew he had something erased from his mind, just not what it was, and threatened him that he was no longer free to act as he wanted. He didn't even live in Krakoa.
And what do they do when a mutant with "inconvenient" powers comes along, like that kid who killed everyone near him? People who's mutations are dangerous and unstable? They kill them. In secret. Not to mention mutants like Rogue, Wolverine Forget-me-not or Beast, who WANT to lose their mutation because it makes their life worse. But he doesn't care.
A guy for called out Krakoa's deadbeat parents issue that comes from a law that said to have as many children possible, leaving many children abandoned. He successfully convinced multiple people to stop recklessly fucking. He was then put into a kangaroo cort attended by only Charles, who is a deadbeat father himself, and Magneto, both which took offence to this and put him into The Pit, which is where they imprison supervillains.
They did a lot more fowl, evil shit, VERY evil shit, but these are my top 3
How they treat my boy DP Mystique whole marriage ( not because its gay but with how nice everyone is after the many things she did) And this line that baffled me
I genuinely hate the xmen so much as a black women.
I fucking HATE how people compare them to real fucking minorities. Kitty pryde has said the n word one to many times and people fr defend that acting like a fictional slur is anywhere NEAR comparable to a real one.
Krakoa. This honestly just highlights how much of a dick the xmen can be. Xavier and beast are fr borderline villains.
societies reaction to the xmen is overall nonsense and fully stupid braindead
xavier makes no sense ever, for as often as he repeats he wants peace and safety for mutants and humans, he takes zero chances to make the world be like this and at every point in time, he makes choices detrimental to that goal
The time Spider-Man and Wolverine swapped bodies. Peter had nothing to do with it, he was just dragged into it randomly to teach Logan some kind of lesson. And Logan tried creeping on MJ. A minor.
They made a cure for cancer, but refused to share it with the world. Even lied to Deadpool when he asked about it.
The notion that being a mutant isn't something that needs to be cured. There are people whose powers I'd just killing people around them, and they can't turn it off. A "cure" would have been nice.
