It's an imperialistic attitude and understanding of peacekeeping that's existed for at least 2000 years. Basically... Soldiers and tactical forces typically don't need to have higher education in order to excel in militaristic or safety enforcement. If you basically break them down into the job and make them only function as peacekeepers or soldiers, with various extra degrees of decision making and responsibility to those who stand out and exemplify themselves, despite being made into "only" a [insert peacekeeper or military title]. It's only until recently within the last... Probably 100 years that we've started to see that demeaning and degrading an entire collective made up of individual human identities to something so basic as "they follow orders and protect shit real good" is actually pretty counter-intuitive when you place them back into the regular population and expect them to function normally like everyone else.
Though as a tangent, you may also notice that the side-effects of the majority recognizing this and seeing the sort of sympathy, grace, and understanding granted to individuals who were pulled into these roles and then placed back into society, too.
11
u/phantominway 15d ago
While I see where you're coming from, they make it pretty clear in the show that heroes dont just stop bad guys. There's other aspects of the job like reacuing, consoling those injured, presenting yourself to the press, etc that require a lot more than just being mindless peace keepers
5
u/Necessary_DaNoodle 15d ago
I think youâre interpreting peacekeeper as âindividual whose entire professional skillset consists of being pointed toward a problem and told to hit it,â which is actually kind of the assumption I was talking about.
Those other duties are part of the same historical problem. Soldiers have spent a few thousand years guarding roads, pulling people out of wreckage, controlling crowds, carrying wounded civilians, negotiating with people they barely understand, delivering supplies, standing between two groups who would very much like to kill each other, and occasionally having somebody shove them in front of the public afterward and ask them to explain why the grain warehouse is on fire. Police inherited another bundle of those duties. Fire departments and EMS inherited others. Different institutions divide the labor differently depending on the century, the government, and how much money somebody was willing to spend.
None of those roles historically required everybody involved to finish four years of college first.
The interesting part of MHA, at least to me, is that hero society has mashed a ridiculous number of those jobs together and then built an apprenticeship system around adolescence. UA students are learning rescue, disaster response, first aid, evacuation, public communication, law, ethics, combat, and quirk control alongside ordinary academics. Theyâre also supervised, licensed in stages, sent through internships, and attached to experienced professionals. Thatâs vocational education... Extremely dangerous vocational education, granted...
And historically, fourteen to eighteen isnât some incomprehensibly young age for vocational training anyway. My grandfatherâs generation didnât discover responsibility at twenty-two when somebody handed them a bachelorâs degree. Ranch kids sure as hell donât. Neither did apprentices, sailors, soldiers, miners, farmers, nurses-in-training, or half the industrial workforce before modern labor law gradually decided children should probably stop losing fingers in machinery. A sixteen-year-old being trained by adults for the work theyâre expected to do as an adult is actually one of the least fantastical things in My Hero Academia.
The stranger part is that MHA transplanted our modern idea of adolescence into a society where the material conditions underneath adolescence have radically changed.
These kids have organs that produce nitroglycerin-like sweat. One kid has engines growing out of his calves. Another can accidentally put somebody under mind control by getting them to answer a question. Todoroki could turn a normal building evacuation into a mass-casualty event because he panicked in a hallway.
Basically at that point, quirk education starts looking less like superhero school and more like teaching teenagers sex ed, driver's ed, CPR, gun safety, workplace safety, and basic emotional regulation, except puberty may also give Tyler the ability to secrete hydrochloric acid.
Poor Tyler... Still has geometry everyday at 8am.
And thatâs where I think the setting gets much more interesting than superhero high school. When roughly 80% of the population possesses some abnormal physical capability, having a superpower has evolved socially into a normal human trait with an enormous range of consequences. Most people will never need professional hero training, sure. They still have to inhabit the same elevators, buses, schools, apartments, workplaces, hospitals, bars, and bad family holiday get-togethers while carrying those abilities around inside their bodies.
We already teach ordinary people how to safely operate dangerous things they encounter routinely. MHA made the dangerous thing hereditary and then built an entire bureaucratic system around teaching everyone to please refrain from using it in public.
Which is very Japanese lol.
14
u/Mikomics 15d ago
Yeah same. They're forgoing real high school for hero school. I'd like my superheroes to have common knowledge on-par with the average citizen. Would feel weird to know that superheroes didn't have to read the books from high school english class or learn calculus.
Not that this information is like, entirely important, but it's common knowledge and having what is basically a super powered police force lack common knowledge feels wrong to me for some reason.

They do have normal classes, they just also have hero-centric classes on top of them. All the professional heroes are also teachers, for example, Present Mic is the English teacher and Midnight is the History teacher.
We only see the hero-centric classes and tests because itâs a superhero manga. Itâd be boring to have an arc centered around studying for the math exam, so itâs typically reduced to either gags or minor plot points
4
u/Mikomics 15d ago
How do they not burn out? Or do they just get the dumbed-down easy version of high school so that they can fit all the hero stuff in?

I dunno, UA is said to be a top-of-the-top school, so I guess itâs just a case of even the âdumbâ students (like Kaminari or Kirishima) being on the smarter side compared to most students? Not entirely sure, though, since the story doesnât get into it I just assume itâs the case of the characters being Built Different for the sake of the story

It was originally going to be set in a collage setting, however the author got pressured into changing that.
This is quite common on the anime industry (and k-dramas now that i think about it). If you have ever wonder why most anime are set are set in High school or have 16 years old protagonist, is an attempt to appeal younger audiences, while nostalgia trapping the older audiences with their "Golden days" before being overworked.
21
u/ManiNanikittycat 15d ago

Eugh, I hate that costume. I get that she âneedsâ skin exposed to use her quirk (or it could always just not make her clothes break. That works, too) but there are hundreds of better outfits than putting the teenager in a slingshot (at least, I think thatâs the term)
2
u/pykinson 15d ago
Noone forced the author to write that
4
u/ArcaneWyverian https://youtu.be/L8XbI9aJOXk 15d ago
Nope, not at all. Just make the creations come into existence a bit above her body, or hell, sheâs richâ make it so her family developed some sort of fabric that works with peopleâs quirks. Have that both be what her costume is made of, and how they made their fortune⌠and give some to the invisible girl while youâre at it, at least Yaoyorozu has something on her.

I mean the series is about how to rise young and impressionable kids and the dangers that come from a bad teacher/parental figure.
Obviously they are teens mainly because that's the target audience for the manga, but I think this is one of the rare cases where that's actually important for the story
5
u/petekron 14d ago
I've interacted with quite a few 19-22 year olds who are just as impressionable as a kid. The story would still work.

I will never forgive twitter for ignoring redo of a healer and going after interspecies reviewers instead.
Like redo of a healer is actually disgusting. And not in the good artform kinda way.
227
u/Adventurous_Touch342 15d ago
Yeah, if anything Interspecies Reviewer was highly un-problematic considering everything was pretty much consensual, even if financially motivated. At worst some jokes were meh but then again, in context of the show rude jokes are kinda expected
141
u/Endrise 15d ago
The anime (but mainly the manga) sits in a weird spot for being "problematic" cause it clearly isn't afraid to acknowledge more taboo stuff but knows its boundaries and how fucked some of it is.
Like one Halfling acknowledges their child-like look is used for customers, there's one brothel that has them possess aquarium sealife just for incest to occur, one joke involves them going down an alleyway of beastfolk brothels until they just hit a farm, etc.
Nothing's off the table but the more messed up stuff is treated as being messed up.
95
u/Motheroftides 15d ago
My favorite running gag in the manga is how only humans are willing to go to the elf brothels too only because they canât sense magic like the others or something. And thatâs what kicked off the whole thing too.

46
u/azurewarrior420 15d ago
You can become popular while/from being hated, but yeah it was despised and still is to this day. The story wants to try and be a "everyones a villian but I'm they better evil here" kinda of story, but ends up a mix of the most seen it before broken protag isekai story and the most generic revenge hentai you've ever seen. For how much people hate the thing as a whole, it quite frankly was a nothing burger of a show that tried to hard to be an edgey Rance, while forgeting why some people like Rance to begin with.

4

Youâre not wrong. Still, Iâm just saying that ufotable especially could have made better choices. We have extended fight scenes that contradict the situation. The first two seasons were genuinely good. Then season 3 just ran the train off the tracks
55
u/LightningRaven 15d ago
Season 2 was already suffering from a ton of criticism.
Season 1 was widely appraised, which got into the creator's head and got him thinking he was an auteur visionary, rather than just a hack being carried by the competent people around him and his actors. Like George Lucas, except Lucas is a cool guy.
29
u/Zoomwafflez 15d ago
George "let's have Indiana Jones bang a 12 year old" lucas?
18
u/moonlitkiwier 15d ago
Wait what, i don't remember that
23
u/Zoomwafflez 15d ago
Remember when Indiana Jones was a teacher and Marion was in his class and had a crush on him? Then later it's implied they had some kind of romantic relationship? Yeah, according to lucas they were lovers when he was her teacher. In the movie she's like 14-16 at the time but Lucas wanted her to be even younger, specifically 12. He wanted it to be canon that Indiana Jones banged a 12 year old when he was in his mid-late 20s. He thought it would be funny.
10
u/moonlitkiwier 15d ago
Holy shit, i don't even know what to say to that. I always loved those movies too, that's gonna seriously taint the way i see Indy.
14
u/Zoomwafflez 15d ago
And then she grows up to be an alcoholic with an interest in ancient cultures, almost like she is trying to process some kind of trauma related to her archeology teacher/abuser and ends up in a romantic relationship with him again when he shows up 10 years later. Even though they're both adults by then it still doesn't seem healthy to start a relationship with a significantly older man who abused you as a child.
5
u/WAAAAAAAAARGH 15d ago
It didnât happen in the movies but it is something George Lucas decided to insist was canon, pre-Raiders Indiana jones first had, uh, relations with Marion when she was like 14. This is indirectly alluded to in the film
7
u/Zoomwafflez 15d ago
In their meetings about it he actually suggested she should be 12. Spielberg also said that she should be "promiscuous" and be the one who came onto him.
3
u/Zoomwafflez 15d ago
Marion "I was a child!"
Indy "You knew what you were doing"
It's not really that indirect, it's pretty clear on the movie what happened even if they don't show it, just have them talking about it after they meet again

34
u/goosedrinkswater 15d ago
It follows a neurodivergent(?) man who's an incredibly skilled warrior and adventurer who only wants to kill goblins. He has the personality of a tree stump and every girl thirsts over him.
Goblins are also involved (crazy i know) and they reproduce by raping women.
The manga is closer to a hentai, but the pilot episode of the anime is notorious for how gut wrenching they made the first rape scene.
Very enjoyable
Edit for typos, i was a little hot and bothered typing this
72
u/Determined-Man Have you kissed your honses today? 15d ago
To clarify: The main guy is horribly traumatized, incredibly blunt, and doesn't really know how to properly interact with people. (I found him a good character, but I guess you can see how you could find him having the "personality of a tree stump")
There are four girls that confirmed like him: a bishop-like lady who was also traumatized by goblins, the guild quest giver, his childhood friend that knew him pre-traumatization, and the priest girl that travels with his party. Series is not a harem.
And on the last part, I don't recall it showing that much? You see what the girls are like after the goblins happen, and you do get quite a lot of skin showing on the main girls of the party from time to time, but I can't recall them actually showing the rape itself in forever.
33
u/goosedrinkswater 15d ago
The pilot episode (specifically the english dub, goddamn those screams) made the initial rape scene much more....horrific. The manga was basically just porn with it, but the anime did a better job making it more along the lines of "sexual violence as horror."
Edit: i was a little vague with my description as i didnt want to give too much away
15
u/Adventurous_Touch342 15d ago
Yeah, if anything that was one of rare cases where sexual violence is actually presented less sexual and more like violence which, TBH, is IMO how it should be presented.
Too many shows present similar scenes in not enough of a negative light.
4
u/rogueIndy 15d ago
(I found him a good character, but I guess you can see how you could find him having the "personality of a tree stump")

I personally didn't like it. I was expecting it to tackle its core issue or build to a more coherent message about sexual assault (and I think that's a fair expectation that it sets up itself), but it did not satisfy for me and left me feeling let down.
The book is largely about rape, but doesn't have much worthwhile to say about it. In the end I mostly regretted reading it, though it does have some good parts (and it's possible it's built to something better since I read it, but if it has I would still criticize it's pace of doing so)

Why are people so weird with sex in media? Sex =/= porn. Get over yourself.
12
u/brookeb725 15d ago edited 15d ago
Iâm very frustrated by the rise of teens calling any depiction of sex âpornâ. No, itâs not porn just because thereâs boobies onscreen.
I donât even think the show is very good, but calling it porn just because it depicts sex is a very childish take.
5
u/TRKako 15d ago
Absolute true nuke, it drives me fucking crazy when people call """"porn"""" any depiction of sex in media, sometimes it's not even fucking sex, at best some suggestive scene or character, and other times they will be calling "porn" when they show or imply the existence of sex scenes
Either we are full of childish adults, people don't fucking know what porn means and will jerk off to those scenes (since it's porn apparently) or straight up they're illiterate and can't tell the difference
And this happens with all media, anime? porn (the most tame fan service scene ever), Irl shows? Porn (A sex scene that didn't last more than 20 seconds and at best shows some boobs), books showing a depiction of something serious in a serious context such as rape? Porn (Because it had sex so it's porn !!!!!!!)
I seriously can't stand people this puritan, I get it you don't like ""porn"" or you're not a ""porn addict"" (That's what they call when you watch a show and it has like 2 suggestive scenes, or you point out how things like masturbation are normal human desires that we've had for past 2 Million years) but please learn to understand the actual meaning of things, no you're not watching porn, you're probably watching something that's rated over +18, the fact that includes something related to sex doesn't mean it's porn

If itâs about the hentai, we talking the anime or the visual novel? Havenât seen either, but I did hear the anime is immensely incomplete and the visual novel is actually pretty good⌠aside from the sex stuff.

It's only porn if you get off to it. You saying you got off to a show about teenagers?

A TV sex scene is not pornography.
It can be explorative and trashy but if you can't handle 30 seconds of nudity without being disgusted or wanting to jackoff that is on you.
It is also very clear what the show is about from any advertisement so, unless someone forced them to watch it, I don't see how they would have anyone to blame but themselves.

i only watched s1 of euphoria and apart from episode 6 which i thought was kinda ass the show itself is really really good and imo it used sex greatly to characterize the characters AKA those scenes were not there to just be there it showed who these people are deep down
