It's annoying, but I also hate the society treats kids as a problem. It's our job, collectively, to teach them when they're dumb and wrong about stuff. It's their job to be dumb and wrong about stuff so that they can learn.

Kids are way smarter than we think
And WAY dumber than THEY think.
The problem is that society is extremely anti-youth, while fetishizing and covetting it. There's no places for kids to hang out anymore, no malls, no skate parks, we punish them with loitering laws, and even as adults there's few places people can go that doesn't cost money.
School sucks, on like, every level, and we push kids to just stay out of sight on their phones.
We need to make a society that kids and young people can have fun in again.
That said: the opinion of children on the internet is still unfiltered dogshit and no one should be subjected to it.

u/TFreshNoLimits 12d ago
99% of American society is car-dependent to do anything. Kids can't drive cars. Kids are therefore stuck between home and school. The solution is replacing car-dependent infrastructure with something that works for everyone.

u/Dragon_Box_ 12d ago
They also more recently restricted who you can speak to based on age groups. In concept it would be helpful but itâs also a veil for collecting more personal data and even means a lot of kids canât communicate with other kids because of age differences.

It doesn't just make it worse for actual kids, it makes it better and easier for pedophiles. The age verify is easily exploitable so in practice it's basically just letting them filter victims by age. And the kids will trust them more because roblox has "verified" them as being kids in their age group.

Honestly I feel like the first 3 or 4 fnaf games were made more for adults than kids. Theyre not like "too scary for the kiddies" or whatever nor are they super graphic or whatever to need a high age rating, thats probably down to scott being a christian, but like, the vibe and designs are trying alot more to be creepy and while not ussualy put to the forefront, the actual underlying story of the games at base level is kind of dark. The trope of using "dead kids as a power source" has been overused a bit now adays bit it was more novel during the og fnaf era, and I think if Scott was making the game with kids in mind he probably would not have that aspect be a prominent part of the lore, nor have 3 have its main guy have a rotting human corpse in it. Like, im not trying to spongebob roller coaster this, but I feel like for those first 4 games scott pictured the audience being like, older teens to adults, and then after that point you can sort of see a shift in the vibe mkre towards pulling in kids. Designs get more visually appealing and colorful, more toy-etic, the story becomes less paranormal and murder-centric, theres more comedic moments, the idea of actual ghosts possessing anything pretty much gets all but dropped unless you believe some theories, and kf course after 4 id say was the major turning point where fnaf went from having reletively little merch to having the explosion of it, blushes of the characters going from sort of rare and hard to get to cluttering game stops and walmart collectible isles.
40
u/ThePowerfulWIll 12d ago
Id agree to that. I wouldnt call them "for adults" but they felt very YA. Not for KID KIDS, more for teens and young adults. The fact it was based in Millennial nostalgia imagery is a pretty good indicator of who it was aimed at.
17
u/Toberos_Chasalor 12d ago edited 12d ago
Plus iirc Scott was about 30 around the time of making Fnaf 1.
I donât even think he was targeting a specific demographic intentionally at the time, Iâm pretty sure he was just making something that appealed to himself. The Millennial nostalgia wouldâve been his own childhood. It shifted to appeal to a younger audience when the concept proved more popular with (or perhaps more marketable to) young teens/kids than people Scottâs age.
8
u/memekid2007 12d ago
Yeah. FNAF1 was aimed in the general direction of nostalgic millennials. It just so happens that the most popular streamers/Letsplayers for Gen Z elementary schoolers at the time happened to be those millennials.
FNAF1 might be too scary or punishing for most seven year olds to play themselves, but anybody can watch Markiplier do it while cracking jokes in between the scares and then talk about it with everyone at school.
Early FNAF was essentially a TV show for the kids too young to play it on their own. There wasn't really a way to be 'left out' of the wave at the time.

I swear, brightly colored characters in poorly written mascot horror games are like crack to an average Florida neighborhood for tweens to teens.
14
u/Kingfisher818 12d ago
Stuff like Poppy Playtime superficially includes mature themes like body horror or child experimentation but itâs almost always offscreen while all thatâs actually happening in gameplay is interacting with mascots they can write fanfics about.
And all these issues get massively exacerbated by the corporate forces that own the platform they grow up on aggressively trying to stamp out any kind of maturity or complex thought.
860
u/ImCravingForSHUB 12d ago
Teenagers be storming pieces of media that explicitly stated that it is for a mature audience then proceeds to whine that all the contents are too mature for them and that they're minors and shouldn't be seeing these and demanded them be removed
150
u/vivam0rt 12d ago
Do minors actually complain about seeing mature content? Or do their parents
93
u/matejcraft100yt 12d ago
there is both. In my experience is kids getting hooked on adult content, parents noticing, and instead of... parenting... they start blaming the content itself. For examplewhen Hazbin Hotel blew up on TikTok, tons of 12â14âyearâolds got into it, parents noticed their kids were watching a show literally about demons, murder, sex jokes, addiction, and hell, and instead of parenting they started demanding Vivziepop make it âmore kid friendlyâ because their kids liked the characters
Another huge crowd is the trend chasing kids. A lot of kids love adult content, especially horror, and they don't complain, bht they talk about it, other kids hear it, notice a trend, want in on it, but aren't ready for what they see, but still want to be trendy, so they stsrt complaining wanting the trend to adapt to them. For example, that's the crowd that ruined FNAF.

u/Suyefuji 12d ago
My at-the-time 8-year-old watched Hazbin Hotel behind my back after convincing one of her friends' parents that it was "just a cartoon." I was pissed but it obviously had been circulating that age group enough for her to be motivated to do that in the first place and that's even more horrifying.
28
u/ProblemSl0th 12d ago
It's crazy. I was at a family friend's house once and their 8-year old daughter and her little sister was drawing cute but suspiciously vivziepop-esque demon characters. I ask where they got the idea and they immediately start gushing about hazbin hotel and asking if I'd seen it. I was taken aback, but like I didn't want to shut them down cause it seemed like they rarely got to talk about their interests with someone who cared, so I humored them as best i could without being inappropriate. But the cherry on top was when she asked about my favorite song from the show and told me hers was Poison. CHILD. YOU ARE 8 YEARS OLD, WHAT THE HELL?
Sadly their parents and grandma, nice as they are, don't monitor what they watch, nor do they seemingly ever engage in their kids interests. That's how this stuff ends up happening, and it sucks that parents end up blaming the creators for it. All I did was lend a genuine listening ear for a few hours and that's all it took for the kids to never want me to leave. It'd be sweet if it weren't so sad.
18
u/Suyefuji 11d ago
Yeah my teen really likes Poison too but at least she's like...a teen? Older than 8 years old? And we could have an age-appropriate conversation about it? It's really hard to have an age-appropriate conversation with an 8-y/o about a song/video that is depicting explicit sexual assault.
86
u/ImCravingForSHUB 12d ago
I actually saw it myself when some I assume 15-16 year old kid discovered one of the few NSFW games I followed and they proceeded to throw a tantrum on why people are bad and supported what happens in the game and it should be deleted and how the author should be canceled or some shit
40
u/Lost-Lunch3958 Jerjuuedjsrndujigjvjrfia 12d ago
There is some kind of inversion of how kids want to feel mature. Back in the days it was by consuming media for adults now it's showing that you are aware that people in your age shouldnt consume stuff like that. That is my theory
→ More replies (4)19
u/madtitanmrsandman 12d ago
Is it like a recent thing, or was I just in a bubble? Cause when I was 15-16, me and my friends would engage with different media specifically because its mature topics. I feel like we would've also really liked if we were in a space where adults behaved like adults. The idea that teenagers would actively try to make everyone aware that they're minors and should be treated as such is honestly wild to me.. Don't all kids want to be seem older than they are and to be treated as adults? Obviously they don't realize yet that they don't want to actually be adults with all their responsibilities, but still.
I am genuinely so confused. I am in my early twenties, I myself was a teenager not that long ago. If it's not a recent development, then is it like a cultural thing? Or did I really just grow up in a bubble?
→ More replies (2)21
u/Murky-Relation481 12d ago
It's a last 5-10 years development. You might have been in a bubble but the general attitude amongst younger Gen-Z and older Gen Alpha is that anything even bordering on sex is disgusting and needs to be hidden from them at all costs.
Mind you they love sexuality, things like gender identity, orientation, etc. But once you get beyond that to what those things mean you know in the broader context of life its like they have no fucking clue what they are talking about. Literally have friends of our teenager who were "gay" but thought anything sexual with another person (of any gender) was disgusting. Like no... that isn't being gay, that is either being asexual or you have no clue what you are even talking about.

I can only describe it as the rise of toxic positivity and puritanism where these people see that every media has to be made squeaky clean, positive, affirmative and safe for everyone regardless of target audiences while at the same time shunned the actual target audiences calling them all sorts of names and chasing them out, accusing them of supporting or even perpetrating the problematic parts of the media themselves

Purely conspiracy brained take but I feel like it is older people who feel offended pretending to be teenagers to somehow make their point more important? Seeing 15 year olds complaining about nudity or swearing feels very very performative and not at all like them trying to talk amongst themselves only about the stuff they saw that they weren't supposed to see. For anecdotal evidence I am a parent of a recently turned 18 year old, their whole friend group has been watching adult animation for a couple of years at this point like Helluva Boss / Big Mouth / etc. None of them every complain, most of the time they don't even bring it up to us cause they don't want us questioning what they're watching. The idea that any of them would be on any social media platform denouncing it for being crass is so laughable to me, but maybe my kid and their entire graduating class are just built different but I doubt it.
17
u/DaRealestMVP 12d ago
Nah, i think you misunderstand the circles, or perhaps the circles aren't near you I don't know.
There is a subculture of teenagers that sound/act like simultaneously sex positive and puritanical SJWs sounding exactly like 2016 tumblr/twitter. Very focused on racism, sexism, homophobia etc but as a part of that age-appropriateness and being anti-sex (despite being sex positive lol) stemming from the infinite amount of age-gap and power imbalance conversations on twitter.
It usually is very performative and hypocritical, by talking to them you quickly realise their values and priorities are diabolically misplaced even about the things they do care about.
Obviously not all - but the sort of people who are in that subculture are going to tend to be very present online
8
u/Papa_Shasta 12d ago
Very possible, but also I think maybe there's a bit of survivor bias there. For every kid you know that watches and enjoys that content, there's another that doesn't, and kids being petty as they are, would voice those grievances online.
Performative? Absolutely, as only puritanical stuff can be. I doubt many actually care, beyond the bullying. "You like this thing I think is annoying? Well, nuts to that! It's GroSs and DegEneRate and nobody should watch it."
EDIT: Quick edit, because it came to mind in regards to this. Remember a few years ago when there was a walk out in a highschool because of furries? I don't think the kids actually cared besides 1. getting out of school and 2. shaming and bullying their classmates at the same time. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2024/04/22/students-protest-furries-utah-nebo-district/73413367007/

It feels similar in a way to books made for adults that seemingly just throw in a sex scene just because they can. to be completely fair here, the game is explicitly 16+, not 18+, and has very little sexual theming to it beyond support for vibrating devices that happens to include buttplugs. so going to the Ultrakill subreddit expecting to see you know, discussion about the game and instead seeing a bunch of porn posts, most of which aren't even GOOD porn, is kinda, how do you say, extremely annoying. Besides that allowing porn which not being an nsfw subreddit is against TOS regardless. TADC is the most obvious example
Although, the show does LOOK like its for younger audiences, even if the creator said it isnt

u/EducationalEmu9611 12d ago
Yea I think itâs the same for a lot of animated shows since some parents or people in general might think âoh itâs animated theyâre cartoons and child friendlyâ but then the kids are actually watching berserk or some shit.

u/The_Rednetthall 12d ago
I remember one time one of my aunts asked me- "Hey is Sausage Party a good kids movie?"
And she was not joking at all and she genuinely thought that the movie with that title was a kid's movie

Like Hazbin Hotel has a huge little kid fanbase. Like I see elementary/middle school kids decked out in the merch.

I mean, there's a difference between made for kids and being like, not child-unfriendly
Like, its made for adults as the target audience, it justs o happens that swearing and explicit stuff kids shouldnt see is kept to a minimum to where its probably ok for a kod to watch it all.

99.9% of the show is silly shit and unserious stuff. It isn't for 8 year olds, but I can see teens watching this stuff all the time

u/kitsunewarlock 12d ago
Hazbin/Helluvaboss has the same problem.
A lot of it comes from Walt Disney's insistence that cartoons only be made for children. Then the industry boomed in the McCarthy era and early congressional inquiries into comic books and similar media scared creators into making sure their content was "wholesome".
In response, independent creators pushed vulgarity to its limits as a form of protest in the underground Comixxx and Zine scene. After the Soviet Union fell, we started to see the "adult cartoon" genre expand into the mainstream courtesy of the Simpsons. And thus American animation came in exactly three flavors: Family friendly kids cartoons, vulgar adult counter-culture sitcoms, and toy commercials.
It's a pity.

Because it got mega farmed out by those slop for 3 year old channels. Like to the point I've seen more bootleg stuff of it than the actual thing. (against my will)
And the show itself does have some theme adults can vibe with but ultimately it just feels like a show for teenagers. And there's nothing wrong with that, but that's just how it feels to me.

I mean I don't mean to be a dick here but TADC is written like it's for younger audiences. It feels like it's written by a teenager. I gave it a couple chances, and recently watched it all the way through, just because I think the animation is really nice, but man the writing is just... something else. It's no wonder to me why kids and teens gravitate towards it: it is a series with dark themes, yes, but it spells them out explicitly and repeatedly. To a kid that makes them feel like they're consuming media that makes them feel really smart and advanced. To an adult... at least to me, it feels like being hit over the head with bad writing over and over.
But man, the animation is nice!

If you can take a depressing plot, go ahead. It's also a story a lot of people would call "Pretentious", meaning it takes a lot of inspiration from a lot of niche sources like cosmic horror books and even fucking Chinese philosophy, and the narrative is purposefully vague at times, asking you to interpret things and pick up the pieces.
I personally love that kind of shit, and if you like Silent Hill, you are sure to enjoy this. Even if the narrative stumps you by the end, there are tons of videos of people going very, very deep into the details. Do a blind playthrough first, and here's a tip: if the game sends you back to the main menu after a cutscene, press play again and keep going.

u/dontpissmeoffplsnthx 12d ago
I've never played it as I can't bear to be hurt again, but my sister insists that the plot is immaculate!

u/Nhobdy 12d ago
I haven't played it. But the people I've talked to said that they enjoyed it a lot. Though the puzzles are a big factor for why people get stumped.

Rated 17+ in the states.
But this is really down to culture more than anything, for example here in Europe I've seen full frontal nudity with just a PG warning.
The US is more puritanical than other countries, While Europe is more strict with Violence, and in Russia something as tame as deltarune is given a 16+ rating

I saw a teenager recently complaining about a sex scene in Cyberpunk 2077. Itâs not like there are almost pornographic ads all over the walls of every street in the city telling you thereâs inappropriate content for minors in the game.

Na, it's rated T. No nudity, next to no gore (except machines). It simply uses the boobs and butts to lure you in and then sucker punch you with its story.
However, it is absolutely not for children. I would definitely recommend it for the story though, unless you have no self control when it comes to Gachas. Then don't get within 100 feet.

tbh, I think 15 is the perfect age to get into horror media. You're young enough that there's that thrill in it being taboo - the fun of "I'm not supposed to play/watch/read this" - but mentally developed enough to actually deal with it.
I know you're complaining about a specific genre of annoying online child that does exist, I'm just talking about the title specifically.

Are you sure it's the minors complaining? Usually it's older people complaining about mature elements on behalf of the younger people, while the younger people don't care.
→ More replies (1)7
u/matejcraft100yt 12d ago
there is both.

Speaking as a older person, I feel like when I was a 15 year old I was absolutely old enough for that kind of media.
