In Italian the painting is more known as La Gioconda

Alternatively there's also Monna Lisa, spelled with to Ns

38

u/CupcakeThick8341 8h ago

A fair assumption, but in italian is Monna with 2 "n"s, as in the abbreviation of "Madonna" (fair lady)

57

u/AardvarkNo2514 9h ago

In Italian it's spelled (spelt?) Monna, as a corruption/contration of "madonna" (literally milady).

I'm not sure where the use if mona in English comes from, although I assume it's related to the fact English doesn't double up consonants in the way Italian does

15

u/Erlkoenig_1 6h ago

Both spelled and spelt are correct. "Spelt" is just more common in Britain

→ More replies (2)

4

u/Diplomatic_Gunboats 1h ago

Double consonants in English is inconsistent. Monna would almost certainly be 'Mon' as in Monster, 'Na' as in 'Nah I dont think thats a great name'. Mona Lisa is always said as 'moan-ah'. But a lot of our double-consonant words would be said the same way if you removed one of them, or added one. E.g. Rabbit - Rabit, Or Rabid-Rabbid even.

Interestingly the Italian word Nonna exists in English (we nicked it, like many of our words) but is not always said the Italian way.

→ More replies (1)

27

u/AlCranio 8h ago

That's Monna, not mona.

Double N.

With double N it means "Milady". So the name of the portrait is "Milady Lisa".

Oh cunt figuratively I get it, it's more of venetian than Italian tho

If that makes you feel better in Spanish it means cute

110

u/Hammod1 10h ago edited 7h ago

I do know of all the other pretty meanings in other languages, but i mean italy is pretty close and important to me, especially the Northeast, so this name won't work out for me..

Edit: maybe it will work out? Idk people here are overall being so positive about it which really helps

112

u/Automatic-Form8845 9h ago

You could go for Mina, which funnily enough translates to landmine in English, or if it's too Italian you could go for Momo

52

u/_TheGreatDevourer_ 9h ago

Mina is also a scarily good famous italian singer

42

u/gibas-kun 9h ago

It can be landmine, or just "chic" or "gal"

→ More replies (2)

14

u/AstarothTheJudge 7h ago

Consider that there Is also a double meaning. Like, yeah, la mona refers to a girl's cunt, but at the same time people Say "we, bea mona" to Say "what a beautiful girl". It's quite the femine term, if you think about It.

8

u/leancabbage 8h ago

If it's of any consolation, mona also means idiot

8

u/Ghasty_001 8h ago

If that makes you feel better, every object can be a swear if you put "God" next to it.

4

u/Niky_c_23 3h ago

fiy mona is mostly used with the meaning of “idiot” or in the expression “va in mona” = “go fuck yourself”, but even then the veneto dialect is very tonal in its accent and closed O if you say Mona with a standard italian pronunciation not many people would actually connect it to that meaning even in veneto. you can also pronounce it with a open o like monica to rid any doubt, keep the name if you like it :)

15

u/__Obelisk__ 9h ago

hey that's my mum's name, perfectly good name

8

u/Alej_11 9h ago

Depends on the region, but in most of them mona is a completely normal name. I think that the cat of someone I know is called mona. Maybe I'm confusing with the cap from persona tho

35

u/RealTreither 9h ago

Mona is a perfectly good name (like the painting)

12

u/Super99Master 9h ago

In english it's Mona Lisa but in italian is called Monna Lisa.

8

u/vintoito 9h ago

mona can also mean a somewhat dumb woman in portuguese, not a completely dumbass just a bit stupid

6

u/Pyrrhus_98 7h ago

Mona means "dumb/idiot" (gender neutral) in Veneto's and Trieste's dialects too, but It does also mean "cunt"

9

u/CoolSausage228 соси хуй долбоеба кусок 9h ago

maybe Monica then?

10

u/Hammod1 9h ago

Thought about it but in Germany where i live this is like a name that only 70+ year old grannies have

6

u/workshop_prompts 8h ago

But those old names always come back into fashion! My mom gave me a grandma name, and by the time I transitioned, it was a popular baby name again. They feel unique in generations where they’re uncommon.

I feel you. Im persona 5 Morgana calls himself mona and I was laughing the whole time

8

u/fartew 9h ago

Nah it's only in one dialect, in the rest of the country nobody uses it. So unless you plan on going to live in veneto (don't) I think you can go by that name

3

u/Several-Muscle-4591 7h ago

I'm in the northwest, and while I don't use it I know the meaning, so it's still risky as a name in Italy. Plus Germano Mosconi popularized the word.

→ More replies (1)

6

Yeah don't call yourself that if you plan to come to Italy ahah

Don’t be too bummed about it, my japanese friend calls me shuyu, an etimological translation of my name in kanji, but it also sounds the same as housewife, i asked them if they were joking and they said “a lot of words have different meanings in japanese, so it’s not that weird to me”

3

u/Dauntless_Lasagna 9h ago

The norwegian pronunciation of the name "Simen" is too funny to an English ear.

Yes, it's what you think.

5

u/AlCranio 7h ago

We've got so many dialects, each one with its own words that mean "Cunt" or "Cock" there's a good chance any italian sounding word can be translated into that meaning, somewhere along the peninsula.

7

u/Vulpes_99 5h ago

Reminds me when I bougth the Sword Legends game and made an asian looking archer MC, because I love the picture of nomad mongolian tribes...

I don't know a single word in either Mongolian or Chinese (Japanese didn't fit my idea, but I also can't say I know Japanese either way, just a few words) so I just rummaged around my imagination and came up with the name "Qian Mei", which I loved because it sounded really nice.

It turn out it means something like "moneyless" in Chinese, which in theory could fit nomad tribes, but even so... 🤦🏻‍♀️😅

4

u/coolenestry_ 5h ago

That translates to "money sister"

Moneyless would be "Mei qian"

3

u/Vulpes_99 4h ago

Oh, thank you! ♥️

That is wwhat I get for trusting Google Translate 😅

Is it ok if I ask something about it? Is "money sister" just a literal translation that nobody ever says in real life, or does it has any actual use/meaning, like a slang or euphemism? I just got curious about it...

3

u/allcork1009 3h ago

Yes it’s a literal translation. That said, it could be used like a nickname or something but connotation would require context whether it is something affectionate/disparaging.

3

u/Vulpes_99 3h ago

Thank you again. I was thinking it could be a weird meaning like a woman who is a loan shark, or something 🤣

And yes, my imagination is weird, and doesn't has a "turn of" button 😅
