Iâm a trans girl and I misgender myself sometimes. When youâve been thinking as someone or even yourself, as one thing for so long, itâs hard for your subconscious to adjust, itâs perfectly normal and nothing to feel guilty over

Same with stomping insects. The less something looks like a human, the less we'll be disturbed by something happening to it.

I've seen people on this website brag about doing things to bugs that would probably you tried for war crimes if done to a human.

I've seen people justify and brag about ripping mosquito's limbs off one by one
I get they are annoying as shit, but you can just stomp on them, you don't need to justify literal torture

Dude oh my god you sound just like me
We ALL have intrusive and bad thoughts when we have ocd, itâs literally a hiccup in our brain that makes us think things we donât want to think? AND YA KNOW WHAT? We MOVE ON. We just let the thoughts have no control over us. You think the bad thought, you remind yourself that that isnât who you are, and you move on.

I have to remember that bad thought so I would remember that I'm a bed person

Overthinking =/= more empathy or care
Itâs self-sabotage born from insecurities.
It will often take away from your ability to care for people in the way they want or need you too. So, for the sake of those you care about, stop overthinking things in your head.
Talk about your thoughts with people to get them unstuck from your head. Whatever the issue, you will quickly see the problem never was that serious or complicated as your brain made it out to be.

u/Legendarien1 2h ago
Most people have bad thoughts sometimes. I catch myself being racist or sexist or transphobic, usually just in thoughts but sometimes stress makes things come out in ways you didnât intend.
The mark of a good person is the ability to recognize what youâve done and correct it. Youâre already doing a good job, and destroying yourself for it only hurts you.
Just think of yourself as someone close to you that you care about. If that person said something bad like that, then recognized what they said was wrong and apologized, would you forgive them? Give yourself the same grace
1
2h ago
I don't have someone close to me. Also I would but the same doesn't apply to me. I have a tendency to repeat the same old mistake over and over even if I feel guilty whenever I do it

I'm trans and if you misgendered me I wouldn't want you to feel guilty about it. It's perfectly fine to simply correct the mistake and move on.

Is misgendering that bad?
29
u/Silver-Marzipan7220 local athiest trans girlie 3h ago
Depends. Its like farting. If you do it on accident and apologise, no one will bat an eye. If you do it constantly, but apologise, people will think there is something wrong with you. If you do it in a person's face without apologising, people will think you are a hostile maniac.

30
u/Information-leak6575 SCP fangirl who gets mad when you misrepresent it 3h ago
depends on the person
doing it on accident is usually not that bad
5
3
u/Magehunter_Skassi 3h ago
Most people would prefer for you to just not acknowledge the mistake and instead move on with the conversation. It's a minor faux pas that gets weirder when stopping to apologize

As an autistic person, I get the intrusive thoughts. Zazen meditation - as much of a slog as it is - really helped me realize that I am not my thoughts and that thoughts just happen whether I want them to or not. It took I don't know how many hours of sitting in mental agony and forcing myself to focus only on my breath just to get to the point I'm at now, but I'd say it was worth it.

Itâs ok man. If you feel this bad about it, youâll probably feel just as regretful if you ever say it out loud. And if your friend is someone youâve judged well enough to be your friend, theyâll understand that you didnât mean it. It really doesnât sound like anyone would do harm here.

I thought I spotted one of my high school friends from 7 years earlier at a park. I was going to approach them and say hi when I realized they weren't my friend, because my friend had approached me a year earlier at Pride, were trans now, and an absolute baddie.
I have seen them a few times since and have made a huge effort to seperate the two memories, since they are practically two different people, one was really depressed and troubled guy, and the other is a cheerful and very optimistic queen.

Sometimes I spend 30+ minutes trying to make sure my phoneâs ringer is on before I go to sleep. I had a single instance in the past where I missed a class because my phone being on silent made my alarm not go off
Every time I think itâs on, my brain just tells me âno itâs not on, itâs on silent. Fix it. Fix it. Fix it fix it fix it fixitfixitfixitfixitfixit.â And then Iâm back to the same loop

I used to misgender myself but in the other way around. I'm currently transfem, but before I realized I sometimes referred to myself by feminine pronouns then fixed it to masculine ones. Now I just use feminine.
1
u/Petiteythewriter 3h ago
I don't know if this will help, but a way to deal with these train of thoughts is think about it in reverse and ask yourself if the reversed scenario would be just as bad.
If you always gender them correctly in your head, but have bad intention and always misgender them in real life, in person, what would that mean? That would be horrid, yeah? like on a 1-10 moral scale that would be like an 8 (very bad.) So, if that's bad, then the opposite (this situation) would be a 2, not really bad.
This logic also apply to other things. For example, feeling bad that you stick to your diet during the holidays even though you kept a 100 days streak of perfect eating? Just imagine you overeating for a 100 days and only stick to your diet during the holidays. Would that be equally as bad? Does that makes sense?
Like, between thoughts and actions, you must remember that actions will be more impactful. Remember and be kind to yourself gang.đ

Me when I accidentally misgender my enby ex partner in my own head while thinking about how manipulative they were to me and how better off I am without them
I'm trans myself now and I know it's not that big a deal if it's just in my head but it still gets me lol

u/wookiee-nutsack I trap ants in my foreskin and start pissing 3h ago
I, on the other hand, am quite surprised by how quickly my brain adapts to automatically using the right pronouns for all friends
In speech I make a mental effort to remind myself not to slip up but in text I manage just fine
Even mire surprising knowing my language does not have gendered pronouns so I'm not used to it due to not speaking english as often as native
1
u/BrazilBazil 2h ago
The difference maker for me is if someone corrects themselves. Like when someone uses a masculine form and then goes âshit, sorry, I meantâŠâ and then uses the feminine form, itâs fine.
Some people just say âsorryâ but thatâs not enough.
And then thereâs people whom I asked directly to stop misgendering me and they still do itâŠ

You go desperate

Idk. I guess ur ocd is different from mine? I thought ocd was doing basically âritualsâ that ur brain needs to do or else it bothers you until it happens. Mine is where i need my body to feel the same as my other. So if i blow a bit on my right hand my left feels not as blown on so i slightly blow on my left hand until it feels equal as my right. Or if i pass a tree and blink my left eye did not get to experience that blinking while passing that exact tree so i need to do it on my left eye too while also passing the tree or a very similar one.
I thought stuff like that was ocd since my momâs is very similar.

Their triggers are NOT your problem.
This applies to everyone. Don't beat yourself up if your not trying to be an asshole.
Edit: OP is alone. And yes, forcing your views on others IS an asshole thing to do. You're not wrong. Wanting to be called one thing or another in the company of someone else is one thing. But pitching a bitch fit because someone didn't THINK of you how you wanted to be thought of. Jesus fuck that's daff.
No victim, No crime. No thought police. We have enough issues with our existence thanks.
