Open /r/WhereIsThis - Updated Guidelines

Welcome! /r/WhereIsThis is designed to help people identify the location of public places based on a photo, painting, sketch, or from a detailed description. We've got a few simple guidelines to help keep things safe and working well for everybody:

  1. Submissions: Askers (OPs) may submit a photo, video, screenshot, painting, drawing, or a detailed text description of a real (or virtual) place. Multiple images can go in a Reddit or Imgur gallery. Try to use a descriptive title to get more eyes on your post; generic titles like "where is this?" are boring and more likely to be ignored. Include as much context and as many details as you can, either in the post itself or in a comment. If your post is not solved right away, please wait one week before reposting; duplicate posts may be removed with a 1-week temp ban.

  2. Privacy: /r/WhereIsThis is for identifying public places only. Do not submit photos of personal private property, such as homes, apartments, residential interiors, etc. Do not post private street addresses in the comments. Do not link directly to personal social media pages. Do not submit screenshots that include real names, usernames, or other personal information. Do not submit contemporary photos of minors in a place where they can be located (schools, playgrounds, churches, etc.). Do not ask to identify people.

  3. Answers: Commenters are encouraged to provide whatever help they can to solve a post, from educated guesses to a direct Google Street View link to the exact location. Give the thread a skim first to avoid duplicate answers. Commenting on other answers is fine! Avoid responding to posts that violate Rule 2, though -- please downvote and report them for removal instead.

  4. Solving: All posts are unflaired by default. Once a post is solved, the asker should reply "Solved!" to the first correct answer and change their post flair to "Solved"; all threads are sorted from oldest to newest so the earliest answers will always be towards the top. Askers that delete or ignore a solved post without acknowledging the solver may receive a ban. We are exploring adding a points system in order to automatically flair threads and recognize frequent solvers for their contributions -- stay tuned!

  5. Behavior: Please treat askers and solvers with respect. No insults, vulgar hostility, bullying, or withholding of answers in order to taunt. No racism/misogyny/*phobia/other bigotry. Repeat offenders may be banned.

Tips: Context clues help. Where and how did you find the image? Do you know the story behind it? How old is it? Share as much as you can with solvers to help them help you.

Low-effort posts WILL be removed

Rule #1 is pretty clear, you must have a descriptive title. Therefore we are removing any submission that is low-effort, such as:

  • Title is "Where is this?" or some other variant with absolutely no information
  • Posts with clear identifying information that OP is too lazy to look up
  • Google Maps screenshots that do NOT include coordinates or addresses
  • Posts with no context whatsoever. Telling us where you found the image, why you want to know, and any other information can make the difference!

We want to make this a fun sub and we want to solve your trickiest questions, but we need you to meet us halfway.

Solved Any ideas where this is? UK based. Unsure of any other details.

Could be a lake but I assume this is on a river, flat roofed church might be an identifying factor. Somewhere in the UK.

This is a painting of my dads who has passed (he would have known the location otherwise) he most likely will have painted the image from a reference but that could have been from any photo from almost any book so it's hard to know where the original reference may have came from.

Solved Paris, March 1995. Trying to find this bench to recreate the photo for my best friend, who has passed away

SOLVED! Spoiler - Claude sent me here! Says you guys will be much better!

The woman in this photo is my best friend. She passed away, and I'm going back to Paris this October and want to recreate the shot on the same bench, holding her picture. I can't work out where it was taken and I'd really love to find it.

Paris, March 1995. Here's everything I've been able to pin down.

What the photo shows, working outward from the bench:

  • Sandy gravel path, two standard green Paris park benches, a large tree trunk at the left edge
  • Lawn edged with green diamond-mesh hoop fencing, with two big clipped cone yews
  • A green cast-iron litter bin, flared and ribbed like a trumpet
  • A curved pansy bed, then a black metal railing
  • A wide paved promenade with a lot of people walking on it
  • The ground then steps down in terraces. A low stone retaining wall with a clipped hedge, then a lower shaded level with planting and a grass slope, with someone walking down there
  • A pale stone wall, and what looks like a stone urn on a plinth
  • Then a tree-lined street or quai with parked vehicles, something yellow, and a red vehicle
  • A long continuous row of five and six storey pale stone Haussmann-era buildings with mansard roofs, dormers, blank firewall gables, and one clearly chamfered corner building where a side street meets the frontage
  • A tall ornate dark green Parisian candelabra lamppost with a verdigris bronze top, right at the garden's edge

Two clues that should narrow it:

The garden is terraced, stepping down away from the camera, not a flat square. And the building facades are lit with the sun behind the camera, so the buildings sit roughly north of the garden.

Context from the same scrapbook:

We stayed at 11 bis Rue Mazagran, 75010, near Bonne Nouvelle, 10 to 17 March 1995. Afternoons were free, and the low warm light means late afternoon. Dated tickets put us at: Forum des Halles (Fri 10), Notre-Dame, Louvre and Sainte-Chapelle (Sat 11), Musée d'Orsay and Les Invalides (Sun 12), Chartres (Mon 13), Opéra Garnier and Galeries Lafayette (Tue 14), Hard Rock Cafe and Rue de Rivoli (Wed 15).

Already ruled out (checked against photos and Street View): Square du Vert-Galant, Promenade Pereire, Buttes-Chaumont, Parc Monceau, Jardin des Tuileries, Square Louise Michel below Sacré-Coeur, and the Luxembourg's Boulevard Saint-Michel edge. Google Lens returns only generic Paris squares, no exact or visual match.

Thank you in advance!

Solved Where is this place in the video

Hi all, I just watching this car review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dl-Nvizvqiw&t=189s , and I think it will be a nice road trip on this road, but I cannot hear clearly what he said (I just know that this is some where in Italy and near the border to France I suppose). Please help me identify this road.

Thanks

Hello everyone, I just received my Crunch Labs space selfie and I was wondering where it was taken. I've already tried to find the location, It might be northern Australia, but I'm not sure. There aren't many details in the photo, but you can notice the coastline just above the sign "Crunch Labs"

Thank you if you are able to help me :)

Hi I’m trying to locate the UK church used in the Thompson Twins music video DR dream . It was released August 1985 and directed by Godley and Cream . I’ve asked Tom Bailey ( the singer ) and he remembers it as being “outside of London “ . Google reverse image search is spectacularly unhelpful . I’ve also looked in local newspapers in case there were reports from the time but nothing online . Wondering if anyone here can give me any further leads . Thanks so much .

Solved Ancient staircase in Vieux Tours: does it still exist, if so where?

Post image

I photographed this interesting spiral staircase some where while meandering in the back streets of Vieux Tours in August 1971. Now I would like to get its GPS co-ordinates, but I couldn't find it after a few hours of wandering around there again in Google Street view. Does it still exist? If so, where is it?

Solved Lost in a Loire valley town; where was I?

I took this photo in August 1971 and would now like to tag it with GPS co-ordinates. Judging by surrounding slides this was taken somewhere between Azay-le_rideau and Blois, including detours to Chenonceaux & Montrichard via Amboise. My feeling is that it is more likely of being closer to Tours than to Blois. Can anybody be more exact?

A German building in Poland or modern Belarus?

I am perplexed about this postcard. Perhaps someone can help me figure out where the location is. Some background research, but I keep getting dead ends. I am not a German speaker, but perhaps the back yields some clues. I also uploaded a close-up picture of the sign near the door. I would love some insight!

Where is my great great great(?) grandmother?

Post image

This is Alice, she is either my great great great grandmother or my great great grandmother. I believe this photo was taken in the 1920s.
I know she completed some kind of teacher training course and she lived in London at the time. My nana has just died and I am trying to find some family history for her celebration of life.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
:)

Where are these girls from

Post image

Can anyone tell me where the girls in this painting are from? My mom painted this from a photograph she took in the early 00s. She and my dad traveled a lot in Greece, Italy, and France so I suspect they are likely in one of those countries but Google searches of traditional dress doesn't come up with any matches. She may have taken some artistic liberties as well so the dresses may have had some additional details that weren't included.

Hello everyone. The photos I linked are all the photos I can find from that day. The issue is we have no location, Google AI I was hoping would help but it was useless I wont lie.

This was taken in 2015 so high chance the love rock is long gone but there is still a possibility, low but there.

The only hint I have is that it could be in rivelin Sheffield near the reservoir or something due to the last picture? If anyone has any photos from this place or anything we would appreciate it a lot ❤️

There is also a chance perhaps lady bower reservoir but we dont recognise it enough and we have been there a few odd times

This was the last image he posted on social media. We haven’t been able to get into contact with him and his team. He is a tour guide and a government worker and travels often around the border guiding tourists. We have been worried sick. I wanted to know where this location is to get an idea of where he was. Thank you all for your help!

Solved My brother, photographer Pierre Crocquet, took this photo in 2001. He wrote it was near Clarens in the Eastern Free State, South Africa. I would love to find this road. There are low mountains or hills on the horizon.

Solved What’s the name/ location of this mountain (possibly Himalayas Karrakoram but not 100%)

I was scrolling Pinterest and I saw this mountain and thought it looks cool. Im simply curious as to where it is and it would be a challenge for anyone who enjoys finding places cause there’s not much to go off of. I couldn’t find a photographer or location in the photo’s website. (Btw im human because reddit always thinks my posts are from a bot)

Solved Where is this border in the movie Two Popes (2019) from?

Thumbnail

The pics are from around the 1:29:00 timestamp. It looks like an international border (I don't think there are any modern day walls between provinces and cities within a country).

Looks like either US- Mexico (but the wall seems too small and unguarded), or Israel- Palestine (I don't think Palestine is impoverished to the level of people living in tin huts).

Can you identify the location?

Can anyone identify where Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart are in this photo from 1945-1947? Likely candidates are Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Washington D.C. with DC being where I believed it was until I started to doubt that possibility.
