Another day, another random cafe... Paris? 1992

Post image

I think this is Paris purely on the basis of our clothes, but it could equally be somewhere in Central Europe. If Paris, I don't really remember where we went other than we went to the Place du Trocadero and the Louvre. Taken in 1992, I don't have much else to go on sorry! All and any help appreciated x

Found in girlfriends grandfathers home after he passed away. Dated 11/20/1995, and the emerald diner is clearly pictured. He worked in New York at the time though, so I don’t think he would have been to Ohio where the emerald diner is. He worked as a driver for TV and film crews.

Solved I think this one may be tricky... Switzerland, but exactly where?

Post image

I'm fairly sure this is Switzerland, 1992. We went to Zurich, Lucerne and Lauterbrunnen; I'm getting Zurich vibes out of those three but not for any particular reason. It's possibly near the station as travel diaries say that we often went to the nearest cafe to the station and then discovered they were charging inflated prices!

Hey guys. Here to challenge some, and at the same time, to help me find this exact location. As the title says, it’s in Terceira Island, Portugal.

SOLVED - Can anyone identify where Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart are in this photo from 1945-1947? Likely candidates are Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Washington D.C. with DC being where I believed it was until I started to doubt that possibility.

film still : Wristcutters: A Love Story / Spiral stairs, where is this?

Post image

I'm thinking its around the Palmdale, Lancaster area but I can't find any information on it. Most online sources say this movie was filmed in the LA area and up in Palmdale. The only lead was someone's comment about having been there and seen it, but nothing came from it. Hell, I'm fine with just the rock formation if the stairs were part of the set but I wanna know where this is at. Thanks.

Solved Which continental European city? (1992)

We went to a few places where this could conceivably be - Paris? Vienna? Florence? Budapest? - but I can't figure out which one, or it could be somewhere else in central Europe. Google Lens says Paris but I'm not sure I trust it. Thanks!

Can we identify trains? Continental Europe, 1992

I don't know whether these are the same sleeper train or not. We travelled all over Europe in 1992 so I have no idea of the country, sorry. Obviously we won't be able to find an exact location but I'd love to know what country's trains these were! Edit: Just spotted we are wearing different clothes in the two pics so probably different trains.

Solved Google says Bergamo, but I don't think it is

Post image

Hi everyone, went travelling with some friends in 1992 and this is one of the photographs we took. Google Lens says Bergamo but we didn't go there. It looks too good quality to have been taken from a train. Can anyone shed any light? EDIT more info: We did go to Venice, Verona and Florence, so it's not impossible that it was from the train, but given the framing and quality (from the time, of course) I doubt it.

Google Lens says Paris (Trocadero), Grok says Munich, it could be either of those or somewhere else! I did look at some pictures of both of those options and I couldn't be sure. Would appreciate any help!

Help with the name of this house?

I found this photo of a family member when she was a child, which dates this photo to around early-mid 1950s. Unfortunately she can’t remember where it was taken.

Likely an impossible task, I’m trying to make out the name above the door in order to identify the bungalow/cottage (looks like it’s one floor only). Does anyone have any idea of what it might say?

The only thing I know for certain is it’s in England/Scotland. Possibly more the North-East of England, as she lived there.

Paris (or nearby), 1971

Hi all. Apologies if this breaks any rule, as I don't own the photo.

This is a photo of Serge Gainsbourg, the French musician, in promotion of the album Histoire De Melody Nelson, therefore dating this to 1971.

It is, presumably, either in Paris or relatively close. I can't entirely rule out England, as the album itself was recorded in London, his then-partner Jane Birkin is from there, and their daughter Charlotte was born in London later that same year. But Serge only ever lived in Paris for his entire life, and I'm fairly sure - based on the suit and hairstyle - that this is part of a set shot by French photographer Tony Frank around Paris.

It may also be seen in this video, which I have timestamped.

Many thanks in advance!

Trying to identify ‘Sherborne House’ (?) from this old family photograph - possibly London?

Thumbnail

I’m trying to identify the location of this house from an old family photograph, probably taken around the turn of the 20th century.

The name ‘SHERBORNE HOUSE’ (?) is actually visible on the plaque above the ground-floor bay window, so I’m hoping this might eventually make the building identifiable.

The photograph comes from my family archive. This branch of the family had connections to Somerset and later London, but unfortunately there is nothing written on the photograph to tell me where or why it was taken.

I’ve already done quite a bit of searching through old censuses, directories, newspapers and photographs. I’ve found several buildings called Sherborne House, but so far none match. In particular I’ve ruled out:

Sherborne House, Royal Crescent, Weston-super-Mare
Sherborne House, Sherborne Street, Islington/Canonbury

The latter initially looked promising because I found Sherborne House recorded there in the 1871 census, but historic photographs of Sherborne Street show completely different architecture.

The house in my photograph appears to be a substantial Victorian brick house with two projecting bay windows, three storeys, a central entrance, a small front garden and fairly distinctive iron railings. The surrounding buildings/chimneys make me wonder if this could be somewhere in London, but that’s only a hunch and I’m very open to other locations.

If anyone recognises the architectural style, a likely area, or has come across another Sherborne House in historical records that might fit, I’d love to hear your ideas.

Thank you!

German Swimming Pool?

Post image
55 Upvotes

UPDATE: Found it, thank you all so much! There had already been strong suspicions that this was the Wellenbad in Düsseldorf in 1937 (Reichsausstellung Schaffendes Volk 1937), but the link below to this newspaper article confirms this. Thank you so much! I will donate the photograph to the Düsseldorf archives.

Does anybody know where this swimming pool is located?

This photo was taken by my great-uncle, who lived in Amsterdam but traveled extensively throughout Germany for work.

In 1934, Germany went through a period in which the country used two official national flags simultaneously. These were the old imperial flag (black, white, and red) and the flag of the National Socialist movement featuring the swastika. This dual flag system lasted until September 1935, after which only the swastika flag remained.

This leads us to believe it was taken in Germany.

In the Netherlands, there was only one wave pool at that time, but this is not that pool.

If you ask AI where this photo was taken, AI always gives an answer, but it’s ALWAYS wrong. It has to give an answer, so it just makes one up. But if you then look up a photo of the pool in question, it’s always different. It’s definitely not the “Wellenbad” (German for “wave pool”) in Norderney!
