Firefox is still supported?

5

u/GGostepop 4d ago

ff 115esr is getting updates until agust 2026 so this is the last

3

u/Ywaina 4d ago

To add on this they keep extending the support every time the deadline comes up sooo... Never say never. They might do it again.

2

u/The_Ordinary_Mix 4d ago

damn, that sucks are there any other browsers that still support windows 7?

5

u/Remote_Cantaloupe829 4d ago

there is a fork of chrome called Supermium, its made to support Windows 7 and below

2

u/GGostepop 3d ago

you can use r3dfox its firefox but its made to support win7/vista

Supremium

1

u/Remarkable_Pea7439 4d ago

A browser that sucks NOT because of Win 7, but because of bad browser design, making them all very resource hungry, already for a long time.
Of course, the more CPU and RAM you have on the machine, the faster it will run.
I'm not sure that on Win11 (or even Win10) same browsers are any faster ...
I am living excellently with my Win7 and would not give it up for any newer version, using (only) Chrome / Firefox / Edge.

librefox or nocturne for firefox supermium for chrome

u/Ascend-910 5d ago

a up to date browser like supermium if you want modren looking Chrome. Slim jet if you want era accorate bloat
purple place or soltare
paint.net 3.5.11 and use the blue theme to match aero and do some bad photoshop/drawing
install beta craft launcher and play some era accurate minecraft versions (beta 1.7)
Install discord with a MSN theme, and go browse bliish
install a "activated" version of Microsoft office 2007/2010
load up some desktop gadgets on your desktop
use qttabbar or more accurately clover to get tabs in Explorer

Here's a list I thought up.

Steam with Win7 Patch. It lets you run Steam on Windows 7.

Krita, Which is a very good paint program that priorities drawing so editing images isn't what it's great at.

Older build of Bluestacks which lets you run android on your PC. Not the greatest but it works.

ConEmu. Which is a amazing terminal window that lets you use anything like cmd, powershell, python e.g in a single window, using tabs. I adore this one so much.

Tichau File Converter, The most important tool to have if you want to convert any file format like WebM to MP4 or WebP to JPEG and more. It's Incredible!

Foobar2000. A excellent music player that you can customize to your hearts content. You should look up how others made theirs, a lot of them looks great but personally I kept mine nice and basic.

Resplendence Software Projects: WhySoSlow. It tells you whats going on with your system and why it's acting slow, very underrated tool that people should check out and Resplendence Software has more stuff you can check out.

I want to say more but I think you get the point. Tl'dr Windows 7 is better looking then Vista.

Use legacy update to fully update the thing

Get a decent gpu and and play those obscure games that only work on windows 7 and not 10/11

3

u/Infinite_Shart555 4d ago

If you have no plans for using it, why install it? Serious question, goes for any OS...

Install ArsClip, Genius from indiesoft, and Firefox-Dynasty (Mamaji or whatever it's called now)

2

u/TropicFlame86 4d ago

A to-do list for ya.

  1. Install Supermium instead of Chrome, it's a browser specifically for legacy versions of Windows.

  2. Install LegacyUpdate, which replaces the default Windows Update and will automatically scan for all available updates for your pc, it works better and has better up-to-date support than the default Windows Update.

  3. You could also install Snappy Driver Installer Origin, assuming you haven't already installed drivers, and it'll scan for the best up-to-date drivers for your pc and then you can install them directly from it.

Those 3 steps will get your pc fully setup and ready for all the basic things and get your pc well established for whatever you wanna do from there. (A side note though, if you use Legacy Update, I wouldn't install too many updates. There's a lot of updates it will try to give you after scanning that aren't necessary and if you install every single update it just bloats your pc too much imo. Just installing the security updates, service packs, and updates for direct-x or .NET framework are fine for pretty much anything you'll wanna do.)

I see you already connected to wifi. DO NOT use Win7 for any personal accounts. Just play some offline games bro.

Oh, did you clear the device manager?

7

u/Infinite_Shart555 4d ago

There is no risk putting Win7 on the internet. Get out of this subreddit if you are here to spread lies. Our entire household (4 computers) use Windows 7, and none of us have any problems.

-1

u/Global-Eye-7326 4d ago

Not spreading lies. It's well documented that Win7 and other older versions of Windows that are EOL are heavily targetted by viruses and cyber attacks. Even if you don't experience any problems, your data on those Win7 computers is not safe over the Internet. It would be a bad idea to do online banking or log into personal accounts online on Win7.

Nothing is wrong with being on this sub or discussing Win7. There are legit use cases...retro builds, running older games, or simply running legacy software.

4

u/Infinite_Shart555 4d ago

It is widely documented that EVERY version of Windows, old and present, has vulnerabilities and exploits. It is NOT widely documented that connecting even stock, unupdated RTM Windows 7 to internet causes you to be exploited or hacked. If you are using a modern router, and have the firewall enabled, and preferably are using an adblocker, you are as safe as anybody else. <--You cannot prove this wrong.

You cite "documentation", I literally use Windows 7 as my daily machine, in fact I have numerous computers running Windows 7. I work IT support, deal with W10 and W11 at work every day, I go home to W7, and there's literally no security difference unless you are actively trying to get exploited/hacked.

Malicious actors target whatever org they can make money from, if those orgs were running up-to-date systems, the hackers would just use another method such as social engineering, phishing, etc. For example, Rockstar (GTA6) was breached and had data stolen, and they're not running Windows 7, malicious actors wanted to get in, they did.

In fact, a lot of malicious tricks/exploits which target normies, old people, etc (which is the most common target), are built upon modern frameworks and probably wouldn't even work properly on Windows 7, because if you are a bad guy, you target the biggest slice of the population to get biggest ROI, biggest slice hasn't been Windows 7 for many years now.

So yes, you're amplifying unsubstantiated FUD. People in the real world shouldn't care about "theoretical", because in real life, using Windows 7 is totally fine. The day some worm is created that seeks out and auto-kills Windows 7 devices, I will be the first to complain, but it doesn't exist.

https://trustedsec.com/blog/adventures-of-an-rdp-honeypot-part-two-know-you-enemy?utm_source=chatgpt.com

https://faculty.nps.edu/ncrowe/oldstudents/spiedss_yahyaoui14.htm?utm_source=chatgpt.com

Sure, "honeypot" scenarios make themselves more attractive targets, but still, I don't know why you're defending your choice of running Win7 on your home computers. You'd get much better security (and probably performance too) on Linux, with zero uphill battle to stay on up to date software.

1

u/Infinite_Shart555 3d ago

The guy in the article set up a publicly available (internet) RDP server... let me know who is doing that on Windows 7, even better, let me know who's doing that on Windows 10/11. It's such a niche thing, plus it's easily avoidable if you don't use RDP.

You didn't even bother sanitising your links as they show you got them from ChatGPT. Nice to know I was right, you have no clue what you're talking about, and just went, "Errr. ChatGPT, give me some reasons why Windows 7 is insecure please?"

So a typical user, who's use of the internet on their OS typically doesn't extend past browsing, is still fine if they use an up-to-date browser with adblocker.

Happy to have this discussion, no uphill battle here, the only uphill battle is people that think they know it all because they read some article. Nothing beats first hand experience, and as far as I can tell, you don't have any.

1

u/Global-Eye-7326 3d ago

I don't because I'd never daily drive Win7 on metal. Heck, I don't even daily drive windows.

2

u/Infinite_Shart555 3d ago

Right... so a Linux guy (I am guessing), on the Windows 7 reddit, arguing that people shouldn't be using it... are you sure you're in the right place to begin with?

Image if I went to a Linux subreddit, and started saying stereotypical annoying things like "Linux sucks, have fun being the developer", "enjoy using the terminal", "say goodbye to having sound drivers". It's kind of rude, right?

So you don't daily drive Windows, you don't use Windows 7, then you're not qualified to tell people about using Windows then... sorry if it comes across as rude. I think the world would be a much better place if people only spoke with confidence about stuff they actually knew about.

1

u/Global-Eye-7326 3d ago

Oh we can discuss Win7 here. There's still use cases for it. Retro builds and VM's notably.

1

u/Infinite_Shart555 3d ago

I mean, neither of those are uses. You make a "build" so you can do something with it. You install an OS virtually, likewise, so you can do something with it, but I get what you're trying to say.

I view it like a vintage car, no crumple zone, no sensors/safety features, and ideally you know what you're doing when you get behind the wheel of one.

I'll give you a fun one from a few months ago, Wacom MobileStudio Pro 16, 2016 edition, absolutely burning up running Windows 10 22H2, but performs quite reliably under W7 SP1 - you couldn't put Linux on there, because there's absolutely zero chance the Wacom/Intel/Thermal management drivers would work.

So it's really easy to poke holes in your "it's for retro builds or virtual machines" argument. But again, I am writing to you from Windows 7, so the "it's a bad idea to use it" yapping feels quite distant and irrelevant from where I'm standing. With all due respect, think about going back to subreddits where your opinions are appreciated.

Not my business to add but if you are paranoid out the rear you can always use an up to date system of your choice and use network sharing to feed that older os past a modern machine and into a VPN. Confirm you are on their servers by a simple online dns check and you got an ad blocker mallard stopper and a modern system filtering your traffic to add a layer against a direct attack. This method gives you far more security that you would imagine. It ain't spaghetti by any means but it could mean allot if you really care that much in today's internet.

But lets all be real. The best defense is to just not be dumb. Go to legit sites or trusted sites and don't download install or run items you either don't trust or can't verify won't be a problem for you.

3

u/Infinite_Shart555 3d ago

Hi, honestly, your advice is accurate, and if in the future, using Windows 7 becomes genuinely risky (maybe AI will create something in it's obsession to find/exploit vulnerabilities), then yes, people might have to jump through those extra hoops to ensure things keep working.

The useful thing is to actually discuss/compare the methods we have available, not what that guy was doing, and just saying "don't use it or the world will end".

1

u/sheepchaser90021 3d ago

I fully agree as someone who has used linux and windows off on and regular. Every os has its advantage and disadvantage and needs to be more of a case by case and not a blanket one or another. I've personally had more trouble with hacks and linux than I have windows. Corrupted a whole system due to the aur situation a while back. I've found more trust in 10 again than linux thanks to that one. I do wonder more related if a pi hole could also be useful in deflecting attacks from sites or malware in general on it's own. Or perhaps a server hub with one plus a VPN that routes all traffic in then out to a good router then the isp. Because I know the box alone is not enough for defense.

1

u/Infinite_Shart555 3d ago

I have also found that W10 is becoming the new "favourite" OS, people like it very much, only since they're comparing&contrasting it to Windows 11, and obviously, W10 wins. I have a good enough memory to remember Windows 7, so I am not falling for it lol

Funny you mention pihole, I believe it's rather intensive for a browser addon to intercept and block stuff on the fly every time you open a page, regardless of how well it's coded, I know things like ublock take resources to run. But the downside to pihole is managing/maintaining it... if you break something, you break it for the whole household, or you blocked something that a family member actually wanted to access, etc.

1

u/Ywaina 4d ago

Hahaha, yeah, heavily targeted...sureeeee. You'd have thought this sub would be flooded with people asking for help from such a thing if that really was the case. But you do you my man.

bad idea to do online banking or log into personal accounts online on Win7.

Online banking is done through mobile by practically everyone nowadays anyway lol, and really, personal account what? A gmail will suddenly explode in your face? C'mon.

1

u/Global-Eye-7326 3d ago

I guess Gmail's won't matter too much since no OS will spare you. Gmail accounts are 10¢ a piece from what I hear on the darkweb.

There are many reasons for accessing online banking on a computer. Downloading statements, uploading documents, etc. I wouldn't say that nobody uses online banking on a computer.

Flocking to the sub regarding online security on an EOL operating system? I would hope that most people on this sub use Win7 for retro builds, the learning experience, just running it in a VM for a dedicated software application and that's pretty much it, not as a daily driver lol.

1

u/Ywaina 3d ago

Gmail accounts are 10¢ a piece from what I hear on the darkweb

News on 11 : you can get one for free.

Downloading statements, uploading documents, etc

You do realize phones can do those and more, right? Seriously, and here I am supposed to be the one on the obsolete side.

I would hope that most people on this sub use Win7 for retro builds, the learning experience, just running it in a VM for a dedicated software application and that's pretty much it, not as a daily driver lol.

Clearly you didn't look well enough around here, lol.

1

u/Global-Eye-7326 3d ago

I know Gmail accounts are free. But buying hacked/stolen Gmail accounts from what I've heard are 10¢ a piece on the dark web. People buy them hoping to log into other things (social media, financial accounts, etc.).

Yes, phones can do a lot. But logging into a banking account, downloading a statement in PDF and then maybe clipping it (only keeping some of the pages, etc.) is easier to do on a computer.

Mobile operating systems aren't necessarily always safer than desktop operating systems, either. Just because it's easier to log into online banking on an app on a phone doesn't mean every use case is easier on a mobile device.

1

u/Infinite_Shart555 3d ago

Yeah dude, the fearmongering isn't working. Lots of people are using Windows 7 as a daily driver, and their house hasn't caught on fire, their wife didn't leave them, their cat didn't run away. It's just not as "dangerous" or "spooky" as you think.

2

u/Global-Eye-7326 4d ago

I'm aware, but it gives you the hardware ID's, giving you a lead on searching for the drivers.

So it's still worth going through the device manager after installing Windows to make sure you have all the drivers installed.

If you're fortunate enough to have a backup of all the drivers, you can go through the devices one by one to update the driver and point to the backup folder. It can be a time saver.
