The field had already been ruined by birds. It's why the Scarecrow felt ashamed and like a failure and that he needed a brain.

In the book, Dorothy does not see Glinda again, but goes to the Good Witch of the South, who tells her how to get home. For my 1944 hardcover, the artist made the South witch look a good deal like Rita Hayworth.

Other way around. The Good Witch she sees in the beginning is the (unnamed) Good Witch of the North, and near the end she travels to see Glinda the Good Witch of the South.
