Hi, I'm back with another question. I made a mistake when I ordered my hockey stick online, it reaches the top of my head with my skates on. I know cutting it will change the flex and I'm not worried about that since it was actually a lower flex than I initially wanted, and cutting a few inches will put it at about the right flex I was initially interested in. But I'm curious what length of stick you all prefer? Just an eye ball estimate, do you prefer it around chin, nose, something else? I played competitive hockey as a teen, but haven't played in years and I don't have my old hockey sticks to reference what I used previously. I need to get my stick cut soon, and I'm trying to figure out what length to go with. I was thinking just under my nose. What do you all prefer?

I recently had the chance to sit down with Emma Peschel, who was selected 7th overall by the New York Sirens in the 2026 PWHL Draft!

Emma is a national champion with Ohio State, serving as captain during her senior season and helping the Buckeyes win the 2024 national championship. She also made four National Championship appearances during her college career.

We talked about her journey through Minnesota high school hockey, her experience at Ohio State, what it was like being selected by New York, and what she’s looking forward to as she begins her professional career in the PWHL.

Hi!! I recently started going to a learn to play/skill development class which I really enjoy and that has been super helpful as a beginner but I am struggling to find appropriate clothing to wear. I'm not required to be in full gear (just helmet/neckguard/gloves) which is fine and a few others also don't have but I feel like nothing I ever think to wear feels practical enough? I keep overheating or catching my hands on a hoodie and all my various kinds of joggers/sweatpants are too heavy/restrictive/baggy/whatever and I'm not particularly comfortable going in fitted stuff like leggings. Any ideas or recommendations on what kind of non actual gear stuff I could wear to these sessions/practising during public skates? Any help very much appreciated:)

I'm in the process of buying hockey gear after more than a decade off ice so I can start attending stick and puck/pick up hockey sessions. I see CCM has a female only helmet and would like to hear from anyone who has any experience either wearing or trying it on. Are they worth buying over a standard CCM helmet? Price isn't really an issue for me, I just want adequate protection and comfort. I noticed other CCM helmets have different padding levels, but the FTW has only the one option. If you have the helmet, do you feel as if it's enough padding? And is it more comfortable? Any regrets or concerns about it? Also, I'm not sure on the size, I measure 54.61 cm and that falls into both categories xs/sm (49-56 cm) and md/lg (53.5-60 cm)

So, I live in the UK, where ice hockey is a bit more niche. I'm so lucky to have the national ice centre so near to me, but also there's no girl's teams before the age of 17 so its mixed team and you can imagine how that goes. There's no age appropriate lessons. Everyone is lumped together, and all the beginner lessons are for like 4 year old boys and its embarrassing! I did the whole skating lessons thing, so I'm on level 6 now I think? My dad's been really supportive because I just love the sport so much, but turning up to a session with a bunch of 6 year olds who skate better than me is just embarrassing and I'm debating just getting private coaching so I can skip Skate Hockey and just move onto Play Hockey straight away? I already have skates and a stick but I feel like if I was to join Skate Hockey it wouldn't really work because there's no 1:1 and it's aimed at kids under 10? I'm just really unsure as to what to do.

TLDR: A netball team is trying to take a womens hockey team's name in the same Australian city in a national competition running at the same time of year where the hockey team is 20 years old.

The Australian Womens Ice Hockey League (AWIHL or AW or Adub for short) season kicks off in parallel with the PWHL. There's a lot less money & resources but we Aussies do the best we can with what we have.

An obvious but unintentional link to the PWHL is obviously the New York Sirens. Sirens is obviously a popular moniker for a sporting team as we have found out in recent days.

In late August, the men's season (AIHL, AI) is about to end. The AW teams & players are preparing to reform for their seasons with tryouts starting soonish depending on the team. Many players have been playing for their club teams over our winter & the AW plays
over summer.

One of the AW foundation teams from
around 20 years ago is the Sydney Sirens. A few days ago, a netball team in Sydney announced to the world that a team would be rebranding from the GWS Giants which is aimed at greater western Sydney (hence the GWS in their name). They have announced that they will be rebranding to the Sydney Sirens for their new identity in the Super Netball competition that also runs across Australia.

The new owners of the GWS Giants are a part of an Australian media company and the netball competition has way more resources and eyes on the sport compared to hockey. Like many in the Australian hockey community, I am deeply concerned that the netball team will be able to bulldoze the hockey Sirens with money & resources that the hockey Sirens simply don't have.

I know that the Sydney Sirens hockey team & name has been around for around 20 years & is well known & respected in the Australian hockey community.

Obviously as an outsider from the inner workings of the hockey team where no one gets paid & players pay to play (around $3500 per player per AW season, the last I heard), I don't know who registered what & when on either side.

What I do know is that the hockey Sirens would appreciate any help whatsoever. This could be as simple as liking & sharing their socials. The season starts in November & games are usually free to watch on YouTube.

This time of year is vital to the setup of the AW season. Tryouts are starting. Jerseys & equipment need to be sourced & acquired. Memberships & merch for fans needs to be created.

5 minutes of the work experience student being on the internet could have avoided this problem.

Hi all, I’m curious if anyone has any advice for me regarding stick options for my height.

Long story short (ha), I’m a 5’0” adult player who’s pretty new to the sport. I’ve been using a 40 flex junior stick, as that’s the only stick I can find that matches my height (going by the theory that the stick height should go to my eyeballs on dry land). The low flex was fine for me and my wimpy arms for a while, but now I’m noticing it feels too whippy when I take shots or even receive/block the puck.

I was thinking 50 flex would be a good next step, but all the sticks I find in that flex seem to be too tall for me. I could cut it down, but that’ll make the flex even higher, like maybe 60-65. I’m wondering if that’s too big of a jump?

I asked a few different hockey store employees about options, and they all said I’d probably need to order a custom stick for my needs. As a new player, I don’t think that makes a lot of sense for me.

So I guess my question is what to do:

1. Get a 50 flex and adjust to the longer length
2. Get a 50 flex, cut it down, and adjust to the higher flex
3. Or is there a stick out there that would fit my height and flex needs, and I haven’t found it yet?

The article is in German, but tldr, the players had to use (ill-fitting) men’s equipment that was passed down instead of getting their own (including clothing), change in unheated cabins with bunkbeds and call-ups for the national team happened on extremely short notice which made both personal and job-related responsibilities hard to follow. They also don’t get paid a daily allowance like the men’s team.

If these conditions improve, they’ll play, but given that they’re already playing with only half a team in Bardejov, I don’t think the ÖEHV cares a whole lot about respecting their women’s team

Throwaway account because, as mentioned in the title, it's a bit of an embarrassing question, but guys, what are we doing about our periods on the ice? I just started playing earlier this year, and so far, I've been lucky enough that my beer league games have only fallen on "bad" days a couple of times, and I've just told my team that I don't feel well and found a substitute goalie. But I don't want to have to keep doing that forever! The unfortunate catch here is that I can't use tampons, menstrual cups, etc (anything internal) for medical reasons, so I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with using period panties or something similar during a game? Any specific brands you recommend? Or am I doomed to keep calling out of beer league every time they schedule a game during the worst part of my period?

Update: Thanks everyone for your advice! My concern was not about pain management, although I do appreciate those tips as well, but mostly because I am terrified of getting blood on my gear, and of anyone in the locker room noticing. I was afraid that the adhesive on a pad might not stick with all the movement and sweat, but it looks like a lot of you haven't had that problem. To the person who said that this needs to be normalized within women's sports, you are so right and I wish that I didn't feel so embarrassed about it. Thanks again to all of you

After a few changes in the WCHL barring trans and n on binary players, I wanted to start a pick up women’s hockey group. I would schedule the ice time and help try to split teams to make the skill level relatively equal across teams and wanted to see if there is anybody in this group that would be interested in joining or if anyone started something like this have any tips on how to build this out!

I’ve been working with StinkySocks Hockey on potentially bringing their No Commitment Hockey format to New Jersey, and we’re at the point where we need to get a better idea of how many players would actually participate before they can commit to recurring ice.

For anyone who isn’t familiar with StinkySocks, the No Commitment games are organized adult hockey games where you register game-by-game instead of joining a team and paying for a full season. They handle the rosters, skill balancing and goalie coverage, so you can play when it works for your schedule without committing to an entire league season.

We’ve been talking with a number of rinks in North and Central Jersey and there are some realistic possibilities, particularly around the Old Bridge / East Brunswick area, along with some options farther north.

Looking to get new hockey shorts to wear while playing, does anyone have recs on their fav? Mine currently are super bulky I feel like and while I like the padding I think I want something a little different style wise

I'm a brand new player. I have a 38" waist and there seems to be exactly one brand that sells jills at that size (Sherwood) but they're sold out everywhere online. Anyone have any recs? I was thinking of doing a jock instead but I'm not sure how they compare and I'm a little overwhelmed by all the choices.
