Yes, everyone understands this is not the case, so why use it as an example?
Ukraine is defending themselves against YOUR aggression. No wonder negotiation's constantly break down. They are incapable of seeing reason.

It's not just an ability to see reason (though that's part of it). It's that for Putin, being reasonable now is an enormous risk to his hold on power. It seems ironclad, but it really isn't. If they negotiate a peace deal where Russia looks like the losers, it's the same as Putin admitting he was wrong to start the war. And admitting that opens him up to attacks from opposing factions that can now openly condemn the war as a costly mistake.

This is why Putin demands lopsided territorial concessions. He wants to seize at the bargaining table what he can't on the battlefield because he desperately needs a win to point at to justify the enormous cost of the war. Even with Russians drowning in propaganda, admitting it was all for nothing is incredibly dangerous for him.
