Remember how many russians died in ww2 compared to the rest of the western world? Excluding china, more russians died than just about the entire rest of the world combined in the war.

And they STILL had the ussr for decades afterwards.

...there is a very different perspective on life there.

You have to add that around a third of the russian soldiers died by starvation in german POW camps.

Russia lost around 7 million in combat, around 3 were starved/killed in german Camps.

Around 16 million soviet civilians were killed by hunger, forced laber or outright shot.

These numbers dwarf quite a lot of conflicts.

Yeah, when you have 16 million non-combat civilians die in a conflict, and still come out as a world power for decades afterwards... you're just doing something very different than what the western world is used to at that point.

A big part of it is just having that many people.

Most western countries simply don't have a population that could handle that. In 1939, the US had 130 million people. The Soviet Union had 170 million. France had 42 million and the UK had 47.8 million.

A comparable amount there would have been 4-5 million, which would still have been insane, but is way smaller in raw numbers.
