my thought would be US would like a stronger Russia because at least there is another challenge for China.

Russia does not want to piss off China so is acting like "hmm...weird the US is here". China wants to look closer to Russia then they are.

Russia can play the US card as long as it wants. No one else is playing the game anymore.

Or, more realistically, China is the one calling all the shots.

That's a fair point. It's easy to forget sometimes that Russia and China historically are not exactly allies. I know there's this whole "Axis of <whatever_it's_called_Today>" where they cooperate, but that's not an indication of good relations overall. So yeah, that's a pretty fair point.
