Guide / Resource 12.1 PvP Season 2 Prep Guide: Honor, Conquest, Tier and Week 1 Gearing

Hey Everyone!

I put together a complete PvP preparation and gearing guide for patch 12.1 and Midnight Season 2.

This is primarily aimed at new and returning PvP players, although there are several details that experienced players may want to know before the season begins, including:

  • How much Honor to save
  • What to buy first
  • Why you may not want to buy a Conquest weapon
  • The major Catalyst and tier-stat change
  • How to potentially obtain an early two-piece bonus
  • How the preseason Great Vault works
  • Crafted gear, embellishments and sockets
  • Common gearing mistakes
  • Important 12.1 PvP changes

Here is the complete written guide:

1. Important dates

  • Patch 12.1 releases August 11 in North America.
  • PvP Season 2 begins August 18 in North America and August 19 in Europe.
  • Activities completed from August 11 through August 17 count toward the first Season 2 Great Vault.
  • Arena Training Grounds against bots becomes available August 11.

2. What to save before Season 2

  • Cap Honor at 15,000.
  • A full Honor set should cost roughly 11,000 Honor, depending on your weapons.
  • Honor is expected to carry into Season 2 based on previous seasonal transitions.
  • Conquest and Bloody Tokens are expected to reset.
  • Save Infused Heliotropes for Season 2 sockets.
  • Do not buy Season 1 socket-setting items because the new settings are season-specific.
  • If transferring Honor between characters, remember there is currently a 20% transfer loss.

3. First-day Honor spending

Prioritize gear in this order:

  1. Buy both PvP trinkets to activate Gladiator’s Distinction.
  2. Replace any extremely weak or old-season pieces.
  3. Fill the remaining slots with Season 2 Honor gear.
  4. Leave open any non-tier slots you plan to craft.
  5. Pick up every weekly PvP quest before queueing.

Latest PTR scaling:

  • Honor gear: approximately item level 331 in PvP.
  • Conquest gear: approximately item level 344 in PvP.

4. After Season Start Free crafted gear

  • Complete Calling All Combatants (first arena/bg win 100% drop i believe).
  • The quest provides nine Venomous Gladiator’s Heraldries.
  • Use them on non-tier slots.
  • Good options are generally neck, rings or another slot with a strong embellishment.
  • Use missives to choose the correct secondary stats.
  • Players can equip a maximum of two embellishments.

Critical warning: crafted items cannot be converted at the Catalyst. Do not craft a helm, shoulders, chest, gloves or legs unless you deliberately intend to skip tier in that slot.

5. Conquest spending

  • Do not immediately buy a Conquest weapon.
  • Earning 2,500 total Conquest awards two Venomous Gladiator weapon tokens.
  • Spending Conquest does not reduce progress toward the 2,500-earned requirement.
  • Unless a spec needs a crafted weapon or has a very specific strategy, buying an early weapon is usually a waste.

Expected Conquest timing, if Season 2 uses the previous system:

  • Week 1 cap: 1,600.
  • Cap increases by 800 each week.
  • Week 2 total cap: 2,400.
  • Week 3 total cap: 3,200.
  • Weapon tokens become obtainable during Week 3.

The cap progression has not yet been separately confirmed for Season 2.

6. The major Catalyst change

This is the most important gearing change in patch 12.1:

  • Tier conversion now preserves the source item’s secondary stats.
  • It also preserves tertiary stats and certain cantrip effects.
  • The Catalyst no longer automatically changes the item to the traditional tier-piece stats.
  • A Conquest item converted into tier keeps its PvP scaling.

Before buying or converting anything:

  • Determine which four of the five tier slots your spec wants.
  • Check the secondary stats available from the Conquest vendor.
  • Decide which tier slot you plan to skip.
  • Preview the conversion before confirming.
  • Check whether your tier two-piece and four-piece bonuses are actually strong in PvP.
  • Reminder: Tier Sets are nerfed by 50% in PvP

7. Three ways to obtain PvP tier

Conquest item into Catalyst

  • Buy a Conquest item.
  • Convert it into tier.
  • It keeps the Conquest PvP scaling.
  • It keeps the original secondary stats.
  • It consumes a Catalyst charge.

Native Season 2 tier with Varnish or Lacquer

  • Obtain actual Season 2 tier from the Great Vault, raid or another eligible source.
  • Use the Season 2 Varnish or Lacquer item to add Conquest-level PvP scaling.
  • This preserves the original tier item’s stats.
  • It costs Conquest.
  • It saves a Catalyst charge, but it does not save Conquest.

Crafted PvP gear

  • Provides chosen stats and embellishments.
  • Cannot be converted into tier.
  • Should normally occupy non-tier slots.

8. Potential Week 1 two-piece strategy

Current pre-launch information suggests:

  • One Catalyst charge should be available near the start of Season 2.
  • Reaching 1,600 rating through Serpent Scion provides another charge.
  • Further charges should accumulate every two weeks.

If the initial Conquest cap remains 1,600:

  • Buy one 875-cost major tier slot.
  • Buy one 700-cost glove or shoulder slot.
  • Total cost: 1,575 Conquest.
  • Convert both pieces for an immediate two-piece bonus.

Only do this if:

  • You can reach 1,600 rating.
  • The Catalyst charges are available as expected.
  • Your two-piece bonus is worth using.
  • Both purchased items have acceptable secondary stats.

9. Great Vault strategy

Important correction: PvP does not have a Great Vault row.

However:

  • Season 2 Vault credit begins August 11.
  • Players can complete World, Delve, Dungeon or Raid activities from August 11 through August 17.
  • These activities create Season 2 Vault choices for August 18.
  • This provides an early chance at actual Season 2 tier.
  • A tier piece can then receive PvP scaling through Varnish or Lacquer.

This strategy does not give free Conquest gear. Its value is obtaining tier earlier and saving a Catalyst charge.

10. Gear upgrades and sockets

  • Upgrading a PvP item’s normal PvE track does not increase its Arena or Battleground item level.
  • Do not spend crests expecting additional PvP power.
  • Season 2 socket settings work on the new seasonal PvP gear.
  • Do not assume added Season 1 sockets will survive recrafting.
  • Always check the recrafting preview before confirming.

11. Important 12.1 PvP changes

  • DPS and tank Gladiator’s Distinction now provides 15% primary stat and 5% stamina.
  • Healer Gladiator’s Distinction now provides 10% stamina.
  • Battleground players receive 20% less healing.
  • CC DR duration has been increased from 16s to 20s.
  • Many slows have been reduced in strength.
  • Players can no longer be knocked back while feared or disoriented.
  • Missing Solo Shuffle or Battleground Blitz queues applies an account-wide penalty.
  • Consecutive missed queues increase that penalty.
  • Once Conquest becomes uncapped, Spoils of War provides 50% increased Conquest.
  • The Spoils of War change is for late-season catch-up, not initial gearing.

12. Common mistakes to warn against

  • Buying a Conquest weapon before earning the weapon tokens.
  • Catalyzing an item with the wrong secondary stats.
  • Crafting gear in an important tier slot.
  • Assuming the Catalyst will replace undesirable stats.
  • Expecting PvP to fill the Great Vault.
  • Spending crests for additional PvP item level.
  • Forgetting the two-trinket set bonus.
  • Queueing before accepting weekly quests.
  • Pre-buying Season 1 socket settings.
  • Blindly copying a top player’s temporary Week 1 gear.
  • Forcing four-piece when the bonus is weak in PvP.
  • Transferring Honor between characters without accounting for the 20% loss.

Hopefully this helps some new or returning players avoid wasting currency and start Season 2 with a clear gearing plan.

If I missed anything, or if something changes when the season goes live, feel free to add it in the comments and I’ll update the information.

Good luck in Season 2!

  • Synchronized Gold Contracts: place bounties on enemy players, track them through map and minimap markers, receive target alerts, and claim contracts with killing blows.
  • A community-powered target finder supporting offline and cross-realm enemies, instant search, stacked rewards, and COD mail preparation for manual payment.
  • Expanded leaderboards with improved capture, kill, guild, and enemy-faction rankings, plus race/class icons and new Hall of Fame honors.
  • Major Guild Keep improvements with cross-shard siege synchronization, community relays, better alerts, safer ownership updates, and smoother performance.
  • Reworked map and minimap feedback for territories, objectives, keeps, outposts, and contracts.
  • New quality-of-life options, including a draggable HUD, addon sound controls, improved tutorials, Discord guidance, and clearer version warnings.

To the people complaining about inflation and ego

This is my personal opinion and all i wanna say that inflation is healthy for an already dying game mode. People get rewards and actually enjoy queuing. Participation last season was great and this season it will probably be even better. Instead of complaining about it que and enjoy it.

TLDR: Inflation = good complaining = cringe

If two rogues meet in solo shuffle, is there like a coin flip on which one gets to rage at the other one for using their stuns?

Because I get with all other classes if you use a 4 sec stun instead of their 5 sec one you're risking causing a second cataclysm, but how is it decided between rogues who rages at who?

Did I miss something. I thought I read they were adding this map back. I haven’t seen it yet and I’ve played over 100 games.

Worst thing about rating inflation = Ego Inflation

Going to preface this by saying I think rating inflation is a good thing. Last season was genuinely fun with participation and people hitting new goals. More people playing PvP and actually feeling like they can climb is healthy for the game.

THAT SAID, some of y'all need to check yourselves.

Hitting your first Glad/Legend (now 2300) in a massively inflated season does not mean you suddenly became Pikaboo. Peak 1800-1900 for five expansions, inflation goes crazy, you suddenly hit a new rating, and now every BG/Arena loss comes with some toxicity about how everyone else is playing wrong. Rating is relative to the season. If the entire ladder shifts upward by hundreds of points, your new peak doesn't automatically mean your skill increased by the same amount.

Keep the inflation. Keep the rewards attainable. Keep people queueing.

Just maybe leave the ego deflated. Thank you for coming to my own TED Talk, ready for the downvotes.

High Tauren?

Why are all the R1’s etc using high Tauren? Is it because of the stun racial?

Healer indecision

I can't decide on a healer for the season (and whats generally good longterm)..I'm open to any except pally/evoker. Leaning towards druid or priest. I do a mix of arena and bgs, so one decent in both would be nice.

I was playing around with druid in bgs the other day and its fun, but i feel like I cant come close to priest/mw hps and I die easily when focused compared the immortal priests I see running around. But the speeeeed.

I main shaman in pve but it seems lackluster in pvp from my testing. I mained mw last season but I'm not sure bout fistweaving in pvp so those two are further down my list but

Am I missing something regarding the Hallowed Ground pvp talent?

I feel like i've seen posts complain about just about every single part of the game, but I don't think i've ever seen a single mention of this abomination of a talent. Even googling "hallowed ground reddit", nothing.

Am I missing some kind of counter play or how is perma team-wide freedom for the entire game not being talked about daily?

Honestly that one pvp talent is the single most obnoxious ability I’ve ever faced. I'd give mages 4 more barriers and invisibilities, I’d give demon hunters old blade dance dodge back and 99% dodge on blur, I’d give hunters feign death removing all dots back, I’d bring back shadowlands convoke and divine toll, I’d literally do anything to have that one ability removed.

I honestly don't understand how to play the game when the enemy cannot be slowed, is there some trick I’m missing?

For the 0.02 seconds of each game when they don’t have Hallowed Ground active they have freedom to cover it.

It's made even worse because the Jinx pvp talent is bugged so it still consumes soul shards but doesn't apply agony or corruption if you cast exhaustion on someone that can't be slowed, but even on other classes it's so fucking terrible to play against.

Please tell me there is some magic method everyone is using to deal with it so I can stop tilting off the planet every game against a ret

Rogue shiv assassination

Is shiv still a thing for assassination? Do i need it or ist enough when my Poison slows enemies? And how about slice and dice? There is no rotation guide that mentions it.

Bg blitz 38% win ratio

Losing hope in getting anywhere in this mode. I'm literally 8-21 right now. Someone talk me off the cliff right now. I feel like gaining rating is hopeless when your team mates are clueless. I play sub rogue. I've lost my role a few times not claiming I did not mess up but man this is tough.

Shuffle, bug?

I’m confused!

Last round suddenly stopped. Decided the last round was a draw without anyone dying!

Total game lasted: 12m and 40sec

Last round lasted: 1M and 38sec

Is this a known bug or am I tripping?

Havoc or Devourer for 2v2

I’ve been bouncing between the two specs while levelling and almost at 90 now with no real preference. Devourer seems to have better survivability but havoc in the last couple of levels now seems to be bursting better.

I know it’s low level so not fully reflective of max level PvP but what are people’s experiences both in terms of which is more fun to play in 2v2 and of course which is the better in terms of power/effectiveness?

Made a simple BM Hunter PvP guide + 2v2 guide for newer players

A lot of PvP guides are useful, but some of them make getting into arena feel harder than it needs to be.

I wanted to make something more straightforward for BM players, especially newer players or people coming back, so I put together:

Full BM PvP guide:
https://youtu.be/XO0UaAhjxgk?si=mvmx04jVFzhuqTBW

BM 2v2 guide:
https://youtu.be/y6KL4xlnbnw?si=aP5Vo8r9ZgPueQCG

I tried to keep them focused on the practical stuff: what to run, what to press, how to approach matchups, and how to make the spec feel less overwhelming and more approachable when first entering pvp.

If anyone checks them out and still has questions, I’m happy to answer them here too.

What’s the best time to farm elite sets?

So I mainly play PvE and there’s a lot of aspects with wow PvP/arena thats just not enjoyable to me personally (but that’s another post).

However, last few seasons/expansions I’ve knocked out some elite sets (1800 rating) every now and then, and I genuinely had really fun playing the inflated season 1 of midnight cuz it gave me the motivation to try new classes in solo shuffle that I never else would try.

going into season 2 I want to obtain a few elite sets again, and I’m curious about what time of a season is usually a ”better time” to earn 1800 rating. Is it usually early in the season, or rather late in the season?

Thanks for any input

Thoughts on removal of racials?

Was in a stream today and the topic of removing racials from the game came up. After a bit of back and forth, I left the conversation agreeing with the removal of racials. The main reason is some racials give you a clear advantage in PvP which is why we see Gnome warriors, and every other class Night Elf or High Mountain Tauren.

I was curious what the community here thought about it?

blizzcon meta

as title suggests. I saw a venruki video where he said the latest patch will be the blizzcon one as blizzard generally doesnt change anything during the tournament.

what's the meta looking like like I know resto druids look pretty good.

my only hope is we dont just have the same comps like last season with rmp.

How can a whole party group of horde focuses on me at the same time from 40 of us every time. Are warriors targeted that much ? or is it a gnome thing ?

Rdruids are cooked

I just came to the conclusion that rdruids are OP or cooked. No middle ground. 20% nerf in swiftmend plus 5% less stats (all healers) plus dps now having their conquest weapon equals huge nerf for us.

Rdruid had good recovery (actually the only one) with how swiftmend worked but now it’s not enough. 4% blanket healing buff is nothing to alleviate swiftmend nerf and the other new factors such as: again, conquest weapon on dps and 5% less stats to all healers.

I was sitting at 1900CR with positivo win ratio. Now I’m at 1600 in 5 sessions.

Ready for the down votes and the usual “git gud” lmao.

I’m done with pvp.

Scenario (Teach Me): Assassination vs Feral in WPVP

Imagine a feral druid (let's say wildstalker) and a rogue (let's say fatebound assa) are out doing a sparks quest and end up hunting each other in warmode for fun.

What does the rogue do, what does the druid do, how does it play out?

Assume equal skill and gear ilvl on each side.

Assume that both are going to try very hard to ensure that the other player dies, but will bail if they are about to lose (assuming that is possible).

If wpvp shenanigans are used (consumables, special engineering stuff), mention it specifically.

Finally, who is your money on?

Reddit balance commettee

I'ive seen some post, of ppl complaining about retpal being untouched in today patch, being the reason to this frustrating and long meta. So i was thinking: why not buffing some classes to reduce arena duration, maybe some classes that are dealing very low dps?

For example DkUh rn is so weak, why not creating a cd's that every active pet reduce damage taken by 5%, and they leech the 80% of the auto-attacks they deal?

And also they could balance the very low pressure giving death coil a cool effect, we can call it Mortal Strike, that reduce heals in arena. Maybe 25% would be good.

And, i think, that they deserve something like shattering thrown. Let's make a talent that every ghoul sent with festering strike can destroy bubbles and immunities. I think that this way the meta should be fine!

In the end, all we need is taking away from mages blinks and iceblock (let's give them a feign death) and meta should be okay.

Long live to Reddit balancing committee
