Look at me! Day 12 - First UTR Match (+ new Racquet)

Update to: https://www.reddit.com/r/10s/s/01yJlLtdXd

Day 12 of pickup up a racquet for the first time since 2014 as someone who never played in highschool.

Today I played my first verified UTR match against a UTR 5.8 doubles player (unranked as single). This was my first time playing tennis with another person hitting a ball at me in 12 years

.

I lost my first set 6-1. Got 1-1 then lost 5 straight. This was not competitive. I was close in only one other game. I was playing too defensive and conservative. I was trying to hard to keep the ball in play so we were playing real tennis and my opponent had fun.

The 2nd set I lost 6-3 but I was up 3-2 at one point (won 3 in a row) and lost 3 straight very close games from that point. I was very happy with this outcome and felt much more comfortable. I could have won. I wish there was more to play.

The Bad

My backhand was not good. I keep switching between one hand and two hand and played mostly a slice. Not optimal. I'm commiting to one hand and ripping it.

My serve could be better. I was up 30-15 with a 3-2 lead in the 2nd set and served 4 straight into the net. Not crisp

The Good

My forehand feels great

I felt active on the court

I was able to hit a lob shot and win a point. It was cool.

Other

I managed to hit a serve that didn't touch the strings of the racquet but went out of the court over the street and into someone's yard. It was incredible.

Equipment Update

I upgraded from a 2001 Head Carbon 5000 TI racquet to a 2001 Head Carbon 5000 TI racquet that's in better shape. Tried the Head Speed MP. I like mine better.

What's next

I want to win a set. I want to win a game. I will try to get gameplay footage. I have more UTR gameplay coming up. I want to update with a verified ranking someday soon. I may even do a clinic instead of the wall. Serve reps and backhand wall reps coming up.

Heath & Fitness How much are you paying for tennis program

Upvotes

My 15 yo son started junior program and has to practice three morning a week before school. The tennis academy wants 11 month commitment at 500/month That’s $5500 for tennis lessons/ playing with other juniors/ court time / match sessions.
How much is that compared to what you are paying at your local club?

Technique Advice Hitting on the wall…bad habits?

I’m a 3.5 and would like to become more consistent with groundstrokes.

Hitting against the wall seems fine for a warmup, but I seem to develop bad habits in two areas.

  1. Preparation. It’s literally impossible to split step. And the ball comes back so fast that the unit turn is very difficult to execute.

  2. Dealing with high, heavy balls. The wall gives me flat low balls all day. But I have to unlearn that when I play with anyone who hits with spin.

Am I just not doing it right?

Anyone have similar experience, or tips?

Heath & Fitness TenniBot for a Solo Player that just does a Tennis for Health?

I’m a bodybuilder and started incorporating cardio with HIIT on air bike once a week, increasing step count, and occasional runs, but want to do more enjoyable forms of cardio.

I played tennis way back and school and remembered how fun it was even though I had the worse gear. But I have money now. And want to get a ball machine as have no one to play with and don’t want to go through the hassle of scheduling. I also want volume of hitting which you can’t beat a ball machine with.

I was looking at Tennibot and seemed like best modern option? But then seen some posts that it’s borderline vaporware and product doesn’t even exist? What are the top Tennis ball machines for my use case. Even though mainly for fun, I do want to improve.

Also good thing with pickleball, tennis courts are always empty!

Technique Advice How high should I toss during serves?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Recently practicing toss in my garage and figured it’d be useful if I have a reference point to memorize the toss height both for my eyes and muscles. From where I’m standing which of these would you say I should stick to? My coach was recommending between B and C but I’ve also seen high tossers that go up to A but have great serves.

General Advice Is self-tossing and hitting groundstrokes alone a waste of time as a beginner?

Beginner here. I'm starting private lessons 1x/week plus beginner group classes 2x/week, but I want to play more than that. I don't have many friends who play, so I usually just go to a court by myself, toss a ball up, and hit forehands and backhands to build some feel.

My worry is that a self-tossed ball isn't a shot I'd ever see in a real point, so I'm not sure this transfers to anything, or if I'm just creating bad habits my coach will have to undo later.

Two questions:

  1. Does self-toss practice have any real value at this stage, or is it mostly wasted time?

  2. What's the best way to practice alone as a beginner without wrecking my technique? Wall, ball machine, shadow swings, footwork, something else?

Thank you!

Technique Advice Finally getting somewhere with my serve after 4 months

EDIT: This is being downvoted so much but if you read to the bottom I literally say my serve still isn’t good and asked for advice! I’m just happy that the ball was going in. Thank you to everyone for the tips so far 💛

I’ve been playing tennis for 4 months now. I do a mix of playing a few times a week (singles or doubles), plus group coaching and have had one 1-1 coaching session which I’ll be doing more of when I can afford to.

Anyway I try to spend a couple of hours a week on my serve and felt like I wasn’t getting anywhere, but today I could actually see improvement.

I know it still needs a lot of work - so any tips welcome!

(Side note I’m 5”2 so at a slight disadvantage ha)

Opinion Never have your legs crossed over as you make contact with the ball.

Balance is everything in tennis and it’s more important than your weight transfer (even though that’s still important). Almost all amateurs would benefit greatly from hitting far more semi-open stance forehands and only closing their stance when they’re inside the court. Even when hitting from a closed stance, the feet should NEVER cross in front of your body on contact. Stay wide. Stay balanced. Bend your legs. That’s all

Equipment Ezone 100 vs 98 buying decision

Hi all!

Recently I’ve been getting back into tennis and I’m probably at a 3.5 level.

I played tennis semi consistently in high school and college but didn’t play for 15 +years afterwards (jobs, marriage, kids, etc)

Now I’ve found some friends that hit and falling back in love

I bought a Wilson Prostaff v11 97 used about a year and a half ago. When I hit it well it feels great, but because I’m inconsistent I also mishit a bunch as well.

I can probably rally for 5-7 hits on average before I mis hit.

That being said I recently demoed the Ezone 98 and 100.

The 100 felt very powerful but I could also see myself hitting it out more because of the upside in power.

The 98 felt good with more control but less power and less of a sweet spot.

If my goal is to become more consistent, rally longer, less mishits and to improve my overall game, which one should I choose?

Vacation without tennis, is it already getting to me? The cheap "speed tennis" kit and the wall of the beautiful house in the hills of Adriatic Italy end up as collateral damage. Shadow swings, literally, at the end.

Maybe I have a new apprentice. My 1.5 year old nephew likes the racquet and the ball. Still needs to learn how to hit the latter with the former. I'll be about 70 when he wins Wimbledon.

I'm looking at my forehand technique and I have a little hitch in my swing. It comes when my racket is back and I'm just gearing up to swing. I can't tell if this is fine or something to work out. It looks l am briefly "pulling" with my shoulder? This video has an example with a clear hitch, that example in slomo, and then a whole bunch of sample swings.

Would love a second opinion on whether I should do something about this hitch. If so, any drill or cue suggestions. Any other issues you see, related or not, feel free to comment. Much appreciated!

General Advice L2 or L3, been getting elbow pain?

All through high school I played an L2, but when I picked the game back up in college I got really bad tennis elbow. I’ve tried both l2 and l3 and they feel so similar in the hand, but on the ruler test I’m right at 4.25. Should I just stick with l2 or worth switching to l3 for a little?

General Advice Why tennis balls rules are so messed up ?

There is a lot of talking about “post covid” ball quality control. I understand the issue but for me there is a deeper issue people don’t discuss :

The rules of most tennis tournament mandate changing balls every odd games , usually 7 games then 9 games. Sure USTA rules got rid of rule 3 ITF to avoid any ball changes and save money.

For a ball to get approved by the ITF it needs to be tested for elasticity, size and weight but the test is done only when new or wirh minimal durability ( 20 bounces that’s is equivalent of one game) . However those are property that should be tested within the actual game conditions. Since a ball need to last up to 9 games ( and USTA rules allows for even longer usage) testing requirements should logically be done so that the ball keep its property for long enough under stress and brushing equivalent to 9 games . This is not required right now to have a ball approved.

Changing the testing to more strict durability will force manufacturer to produced a product that work for the intended use and not for 2 games only solving the all debate on ball quality and fluffing pre and post Covid since those are things not tested right now properly.

The goal of manufacturers is to make the cheapest product that pass the tests and current balls are all passing so the clear solution is make the test tighter.

What is your take ?
