Unpopular opinion but takes like love afk skilling cause the game to deteriorate.

u/1010203838 Jul 28 '26

'Ate opinions

5

u/Fleeetch Jul 28 '26

Luv me sweatin'

46

u/Jormungandr69 Jul 28 '26

Idk, I think Runescape being the one of the only MMORPGs where you can easily and meaningfully AFK different skills is one of the things that sets it apart from any other game, in a positive way.

18

u/7_Tales Jul 28 '26

its so low resources you can deadass have it as a little box on your screen and do something extremely inefficient but feel dopamine anyway. Its absolutely a point in the games favour - it boosts membership and that helps fund jagex for us active players.

1

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Yeah, I dont think that the game needs to have 0 afk methods. Having something u can throw on the second monitor is nice. Its simply that people always want more, especially on this sub

2

u/Jormungandr69 Jul 28 '26

Yeah don't get me wrong, I do understand what you're saying. If a lot of folks had it their way, there would be a 750k xp/hr AFK training method for every skill. And a part of me does miss a time when more folks would actively play the game, often for less experience, simply because it was fun (2010 f2p Clan Wars on w141, my beloved)

12

u/Paradoxjjw Jul 28 '26

Deteriorate how?

-6

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Too much afk methods = bad for game

5

u/GODLOVESALL32 RSN: Zezima Jul 28 '26

Infallible reasoning, point very well articulated.

1

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Thank you

4

u/Paradoxjjw Jul 28 '26

Too few afk methods = very bad for game

We should be adding more

0

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

You are entitled to your opinion! Sorta why I stated in my first comment that it was an unpopular opinion

24

u/tchnl Jul 28 '26

I get where you're coming from, but if it wasn't for more relaxed training I kinda doubt this game would've been as popular as it is now.

-5

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Yeah. I think that having a handful of afk methods over the entire game is fair, its just that its becoming oversaturated, and people just keep asking for more.

14

u/Iron_Aez 2376 Jul 28 '26

Skilling is oversaturated? Consider counting how many bosses there are

6

u/TheNamesRoodi 2376 Total GM Jul 28 '26

I might be reaching, but he might be saying there are too many very strong afk methods nowadays. Back in the day, woodcutting yews was afk and the trees would randomly fall. Regular fishing was afk and it wasn't that long that you could actually afk. There was no afk mining or runecraft. Etc. etc.

Nowadays we have 30 minute afk (for really bad xp I know) salvaging, 7 minutes redwood 7 to like 3 minute afk bwans, afk mining methods, zeah rc... stuff like that.

I personally love afk skilling, but I can understand where he's coming from and he might be saying that skilling is becoming very afk

0

u/Iron_Aez 2376 Jul 28 '26

All afk methods are strictly worse than playing actively. Anyone doing them is being inefficient and hurting their own progress.

With that in mind, if someone want to do them, they are the one and only content in the game they have absolutely 0 reason to do.

2

u/TheNamesRoodi 2376 Total GM Jul 28 '26

Right, but when methods are as afk as they are, people don't talk nearly as much. Makes the game a little less social which is sad. That's the only bit I don't like.

I will say however, that the conversations in modern day rs are weird as hell most of the time.

0

u/Iron_Aez 2376 Jul 28 '26

CCs are always popping off I find.

2

u/TheNamesRoodi 2376 Total GM Jul 28 '26

I just swapped ccs the other day. The new cc pops off way harder than the old one.

However, I don't have clogs to get afk skilling and I'm maxed. Nobody gzs me on my fishing bro :(

1

u/LoLEmpire Jul 29 '26

skilling sure. Combat on the other hand, was ruined by being able to go to sleep and train for 6 hours in NMZ, as well as things like splashing on a rat for 6 hours. People got 99 all combat stats effortlessly.

-1

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

My comment only pertains to afk skilling methods, the topic of conversation

0

u/PracticalLychee180 Jul 28 '26

Imagine not understanding the concept of an analogy

6

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

He said skilling is oversaturated. Im not talking about skilling. And bossing is a stupid comparison. There are very few bosses that feel anything alike, where every single afk method feels the exact same because it is by definition click and walk away.

-1

u/PracticalLychee180 Jul 28 '26

The analogy is to something else oversaturated, not to something else afk. Jesus, im sorry your reading comprehension is lackluster but I was able to understand his analogy perfectly fine

6

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Yeahhh, did you read my full comment? I also replied to his analogy since my original reply displeased you. Bossing isnt oversaturated.

0

u/PracticalLychee180 Jul 28 '26

So you failed to understand the analogy, then replied to me, not OP, to their analogy, by missing the point of the analogy. Cool. Bossing can be oversaturated without feeling like afk, so your comment misses the point by pretending that it isnt oversaturated BECAUSE its not like afk activities

0

u/Iron_Aez 2376 Jul 28 '26

Silly pedantry but sure

Afk skilling is oversaturated? Consider counting how many bosses there are

7

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Bosses are for the most part different experiences which doesnt make it feel overcrowded, afk skilling is all the exact same click and walk away

-1

u/Iron_Aez 2376 Jul 28 '26

lol. lmao even.

2

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

You think we have too many bosses?

-3

u/Sleazehound Jul 28 '26

There used to be a few afk skills, now most of the em do. What does that have to do with bossing lmao

3

u/Iron_Aez 2376 Jul 28 '26

God forbid the sandbox has options.

At least until you get to endgame and there's nothing except oversaturation of bossing.

1

u/Sleazehound Jul 28 '26

The thing is the game wasn’t supposed to be sandbox with 30 minute afk for most skills. In the next few years we can guarantee that’ll be all skills.

God forbid some people have the preference for the game to remain somewhat true to its roots

Whats your obsession with bossing lmao thats two in a row youve brought it up unrelated hahaha smhmh

1

u/Iron_Aez 2376 Jul 28 '26

hahaha smhmh if you talk about afk being "oversaturated" (literally impossible btw) then ofc the actual oversaturated content deserves being bought up.

1

u/Sleazehound Jul 28 '26

Okay so in the same breath you say CONTENT A (skilling) cannot be oversaturated but LOOK, CONTENT B (bossing) is!!!!!!111!!!

So which one dawg? You can see content CAN be oversaturated, but your preference is the one that is while the content others say is oevrsaturated simply can't be?

You realise how stupid your angle is right

1

u/Iron_Aez 2376 Jul 28 '26

afking cannot be oversaturated because it is completely optional, it is objectively and fully disadvantageous to progression to spend any time on it compared to active alternatives (which there ALWAYS are).

There are no real alternatives to bossing in the endgame, just vast ever-ballooning grind. Hence: oversaturated.

u/superraiden Jul 28 '26

Deteriorate in what way?

5

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Less interesting less fun less meaningful

1

u/Send_Me_Dachshunds Ban Gold Buyers Jul 28 '26

Fortunately every skill has a more active method if you find that style more interesting, fun or meaningful.

2

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Active methods are made less meaningful by the existence of comprable afk methods

1

u/superraiden Jul 28 '26

My juicy steak is made worse by other people eating leather

Just don't use the slow AFK methods if you don't like them?

Also what does meaningful even mean?

10

u/rws531 Jul 28 '26

Not really an opinion, just wrong… unless you can qualify how the game is deteriorating without ignoring how popular it is now.

7

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

I dont think you know what an opinion is. I think that the more afk and low effort the game becomes, the worse it becomes.

5

u/PracticalLychee180 Jul 28 '26

Then why are you here? RS has had overwhelming afk activities since long before Osrs, I remember cutting Ivy in Ardy on RS2. If you think it has deteriorated the game, why would you play it? Unless you dont actually believe this opinion

6

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Because I enjoy it. The game getting worse does not preclude me from enjoying it

1

u/PracticalLychee180 Jul 28 '26

My point is it was always afk, so if afk methods make it bad, then you enjoy it being bad, and your opinion is meaningless. Its like saying pizza has been deteriorating for 3 decades due to how they make it, yet you still eat pizza multiple times per week because you enjoy how its made.

You gonna claim youve never once engaged in afk methods or was it okay when it benefitted you but bad when it doesnt?

5

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Theyre adding shit like fully afk salvage for 30 minutes lol. I dont care if you could afk chop a tree when I started playing, but since I started the amount of ridiculously strong afk methods has gotten much much higher, and the length of afking gets longer. Thats bad

1

u/ANGEL-PSYCHOSIS btw Jul 28 '26

salvaging being so insanely afk and getting good exp rates and loot on top was really an achillies heel to sailing, sure youd 99 a lot faster doing trials, but youd get nothing out of it except xp. and up until recently youd probably lose more resources than youd gain doing bounty tasks, and courier tasks will continue to be absolutely troll until they finally impliment loot bags from them. so if you didnt like trial laps... you basically only had a skill your actual only option was to afk.

granted, you do have some real incentives to level it regardless, but they dont feel nearly as necessary as say... herblore or crafting, but theres also very few quest requirements attached like mining and woodcutting currently have, and even then mining has amethyst and (now finally) woodcutting has seeker arrows, whilst sailings benefits are more nebulous and mostly restricted to irons.

-1

u/PracticalLychee180 Jul 28 '26

Thats just your shitty opinion man, you think its bad yet youre still playing, so i cant take you seriously. Its like complaining someone shit in your cereal as youre still eating spoonfuls. You just have a superiority complex and think your way of playing is better than everyone elses, and we dont need elitist gatekeeping thats too ignorant to even understand its always been this way

4

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Thats why i said unpopular opinion. And if someone shit in the cereal I like which happens to be the only bowl of it in existence I would try to clean the shit out and convince people to not shit in it again. Im sorry you would rather give up.

4

u/Sleazehound Jul 28 '26

How can you not understand they’re saying a few afk methods for a few skills is fine, but for it to not only apply to all skills but with updates making afk last more than 5 minutes cheapens the journey

I cant believe yall so obtuse

-1

u/PracticalLychee180 Jul 28 '26

Because its not fucking new and it doesnt cheapen anyones journey if they dont want it to. No one forced anyone into afk activities and others doing afk activities literally doesnt affect your play experience. Every afk method is worse xp than active methods, they MIGHT have a point if the afk methods actually invalidated ANY active training method

Imagine thinking having more methods for training ruins a game, I understand what theyre saying, buts its still fucking stupid

5

u/Sleazehound Jul 28 '26

First up, relax

Second up, tell me what you could afk in the ivy days… woodcutting, fishing, combat, an inventory of pure ess…? What now? You asked what’s new, I ask you to figure it out yourself

I’d love for there to be varied and competitive methods for all skills. But 7-29.99 minute afk remote desktop tier gameplay for 0.3 ehp/h one click idle simulator bullshit isn’t how the game should be played

It doesnt impact me individually or specifically, but like the other guy said it does deteriorate the quality of the game. Where’s the gratification or sense of accomplishment?

2

u/WastingEXP Jul 28 '26

"it was always afk" references a thing that was never in the game.

-1

u/PracticalLychee180 Jul 28 '26

Which thing are you talking about? The comment you replied to didnt mention anything in game so i think you are confused

3

u/PaxChelonia Jul 28 '26

Back in the rs2 peak of 05-07, they’re were basically 0 afk training methods. Even fishing and woodcutting would spam you with dangerous random events if you looked away for 2 minutes.

Idk what ivy is but that must have been a later addition. Don’t think it was in the game when I quit in 08.

0

u/PracticalLychee180 Jul 28 '26

So then shouldnt all of you have been saying that its the removal of dangerous randoms that deteriorated the game, not the actual afk methods themselves?

Ivy released 2009, so you must have just missed it.

3

u/runningoutofphosphor Jul 28 '26

Even if it's way slower?

5

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Yes. Its sort of a moot point nowadays as agility is really the only skill without an afk method (except house agility course) but itr more of like the turbo afk methods like stars and full 30 min afk trawling and salvage that are really unhealthy

2

u/runningoutofphosphor Jul 28 '26

I'm not up to date with sailing. But star mining, which maxes out at 30k/h for one click every 7 minutes, seems fine with me, when granite maxes out at 125k/h. More than 4x the xp/h. As long as it doesn't get absurdly afk like 6h nmz or splashing back then...

4

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Yeah. I dont think they need removed. I just think that its worth avoiding adding more click once every 7 minutes and get 0.25 ehp.

2

u/rws531 Jul 28 '26

So by “deteriorating” you just meant “worse” with no qualification… makes sense.

5

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Correct! The game is deteriorating into a worse state. ( again, only my opinion)

4

u/rws531 Jul 28 '26

When someone asks you to qualify something, using a synonym adds literally nothing.

You don’t even have any opinion here, just stating it’s worse.

“How is it deteriorating?” “it’s worse”

7

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

I already specified in this thread. Less enjoyable, less meaningful

2

u/LuxOG Jul 28 '26

Just look at what happened to salvaging and the current crusade to fortnite zeah rc

5

u/rws531 Jul 28 '26

Imma be real, I’ve got no idea what the “crusade to fortnite zeah rc” is. Something about the lantern changes?

1

u/LuxOG Jul 28 '26

There’s a post on the front page right now and theres been multiple recently

2

u/rws531 Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26

This? I wouldn’t really call it a crusade when people are asking to revert a change… not even add anything new.

That said, I feel the only thing wrong with Zeah rc is that you can’t chisel multiple essence while running without doing it manually. Having movement cancel that type of action is inconsistent with crafting and fletching.

3

u/LuxOG Jul 28 '26

It’s not reverting a change lmao. It was like that for 2 weeks and then in its current stare for 9 years. Can we also revert the change where tumeken’s shadow accuracy applied to ice barrage?

2

u/rws531 Jul 28 '26

Fair enough, it’s not a crusade to ask “is it time to revert this update?” though.

I did most of my 99 RC grind between Daeyalt and ZMI, since Daeyalt timers were at least consistent, unlike Zeahs.

0

u/zw1ck Weed Farmer Jul 28 '26

I don't fortnite. Can I get a teenager to adult translation?

0

u/WastingEXP Jul 28 '26

this is a funny comment but not in the way you meant it to be.

-1

u/zw1ck Weed Farmer Jul 28 '26

I just want to know what fortnite has to do with making bloods super afk

2

u/Claaaaaaaaws Jul 28 '26

Not really, just taking it, but pushing for it more I can agree with you.

3

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Idk if im reading ur comment the way u intended it, but yes, im more against the addition of more, then holding issue with what we have

2

u/CheriColaProduct Jul 28 '26

Runescape was a rock clicking sim before it ever had bosses

2

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Emphasis on the clicking

2

u/CheriColaProduct Jul 28 '26

WC and Fishing was one click maybe every 20-40 seconds since the release of rs2

I was there

3

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Perfect! One click every 40 seconds is much better then 1 click every 7 minutes, or 30

2

u/CheriColaProduct Jul 28 '26

Well it didnt take long for people to discover splashing

2

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Mhm, even 1 click every 5 minutes is better then every 7. Trying to compare the afk levels of 2004-7 to now is just stupid. Theyre not even in the same universe

2

u/CheriColaProduct Jul 28 '26

https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Guide:AFK_Skilling_Methods

Forgive me I havent tried these 7 minute methods and am mostly unaware of them, to be fair Im not finding any

Looks like magics and yews are still near the top of that list with a few newer trees replacing them as most afk

Edit: my bad i didnt sort the list and now i see what you mean

2

u/genericbuthumourous Jul 28 '26

Typical maxed iron take tbh

9

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Typical take from someone who plays the game and enjoys it?

-2

u/genericbuthumourous Jul 28 '26

Sorry, I was using being facetious as a thinly veiled attempt to highlight your out of touch opinion likely directly coincides with your unhealthy relationship with this game.

3

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

Me when someone plays the game more then me. Grow up

1

u/genericbuthumourous Jul 28 '26

I truly hope you find something in the real world that ignites your passion just as hard.

0

Bold words from a fella whos been replying dutifully on the osrs subreddit for 2 hours

1

u/genericbuthumourous Jul 28 '26

Youre my entertainment at work bozo hahaha

2

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

You, much like myself, are browsing the osrs subreddit at work. Perhaps you should reflect on your own relationship with the game if you cannot go 8 hours without it.

I know calling someone unemployed is lazy, but I actually don't believe you lmao

-1

u/Arrandyl Jul 28 '26

Sorry bro, you're not actually allowed to have ethics on this website. You just need to make another post asking for the game to get easier and farm karma like the other 99% of lobotomites on here. Runecraft and Agility to 500k xp/hr! lol!

1

u/FredDurstIsMyUncle Jul 28 '26

Yes and no, as someone who absolutely hates afk skilling theres nothing wrong with variety. We just dont need to oversaturate skills with afk stuff and have methods that are active be appropriately rewarding (bloodwood trees are a great example of this)

0

u/jabracadaniel Jul 28 '26

i mean.. one method is just intended gameplay, the other is exploiting slight bugs/glitches in game mechanics. i wonder which one is more likely to deteriorate the experience accross the game

2

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

extremely reddit take, and ive never tick manipulated in my whole time playing

3

u/CheriColaProduct Jul 28 '26

You know you're on Reddit too right?

0

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

With very unreddit takes, as denoted by the downvotes.

2

u/CheriColaProduct Jul 28 '26

Nah being an armchair game dev is pretty reddit

Why be in denial about it?

1

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

It might be reddit behavior but its not a reddit take.

1

u/CheriColaProduct Jul 28 '26

Im not sure I understand the distinction here

1

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

The distinction between an opinion and behavior?

1

u/CheriColaProduct Jul 28 '26

So you behave just like a redditor but feel your opinions are more special by virtue of being less popular? Therefore you are not "peak reddit", just reddit adjacent? Okay 🤭
