Quests and afk-ing, the best 2 things about this game :D
I definitely do some moderate PvM-ing mind you, and even occasionally intense PvM or "sweaty" skilling like Hallowed Sep + alching/fletching. But the awesome lore, funny dialogue, and sweet passive gains are fundamentally why I play this game

Eh, it's different levels of desire for different mechanics. Most of the time comfy gaming is osrs for me. Lately pvp is the flavor of choice because I want to learn something new and expand my skills.
That and all the hype/focus on pvp since dmm in the US has really inspired me to figure it out.

I know it sounds stupid but once youâve done a boss loads it does actually get cosy as well, I was doing soul reaper axe recently and mostly could just switch off after a while (except vard which is stress)
2
u/FlameanatorX Quest Dialogue Enjoyer Jul 28 '26
Factual, although like you imply at the end not all bosses can become relaxed, especially for PvM noobies like me. But a lot can, say Moons of Peril, Demonic Gorillas, Hydra, or Zulrah
1
u/Affectionate_Row9238 Jul 29 '26
All of those I don't put in the same box as something like med diary barrows tho, there's low attention bossing then there's afk bossing lmao
1
u/FlameanatorX Quest Dialogue Enjoyer Jul 29 '26
Oh for sure, I was just going off what Oohaaahz was saying. Cozy doesn't even necessarily mean "low-attention" to me, it's more like low mental effort once you've learned it. Like rooftop alch-gility lol
1
u/vegeto079 Jul 29 '26
vard at least is the same thing the entire time so if you learn it it's brain off
stuff like Levi was too varied for me to get comfy, a lot of different things to think about
1
u/oohaaahz Jul 29 '26
Itâs funny bc I was the complete opposite, I got in such a pattern with Levi that itâs the most afk of the four for me.
I was spooned at vard so didnât have a chance to do him so much which I was thankful about bc it was so overstimulating to me lol

u/Alone-Horse2857 Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 29 '26
It's the same for Dark Souls for me. I know that game inside and out, and there's a coziness to being so intimately familiar with something.
I know every enemy's moveset pixel by pixel so it's more muscle memory than anything. I gotta get around to trying some bossing.
My biggest issue with learning a boss is it might as well cost 100k every attempt. Ammo, food, pots are extremely expensive at that level, and a fucked up run gets you NOTHING. It's really discouraging that you can't practice bosses somehow and I have to go on the wiki and memorize gifs of attack patterns or accept that I'm gonna lose a shitload of money before I can even start having fun.
1
u/oohaaahz Jul 29 '26
I agree, when I first started bossing it was the biggest thing putting me off.
Gauntlet is completely free for fees and resources, a few bosses have discounted reclaim fees up to a certain kc too (zulrah, Yama, Doom, DT2), and lots of people practice with karambwans to keep costs down.
Wearing void and using protect item also helps, you donât even need to go for a kill, just get the mechanics down, then it can go down to about 10k a try which is more manageable. Iâd recommend gauntlet to build up a death fund lol.
8
u/Parry_9000 Jul 28 '26
Dark souls is my absolute favorite franchise. I have 400h+ on every game.
Osrs difficulty is different. Idk why. More stressful. Definitely not a fan of doing shit like Yama godfly etc
2
u/Alone-Horse2857 Jul 29 '26
Yeah, clicking 50 times in a single tick to change your outfit like superman, and playing with a metronome to perfect prayer flick isn't my idea of difficulty. Those all feel like exploits that the community discovered and Jagex just decided to run with because it's easier than fixing the game engine.
I'll take promised consort radahn any day over a pvp encounter or trying to learn boss mechanics.
1
u/a-filthy-casuall Jul 29 '26
Honestly, harder pvm content reminds me of Sekiro. Tickles the itch. It's like learning the dance and rhythm of the fight. Except in osrs, once you master it, you continue doing it for tens to hundreds of hours, praying to RNGesus.

We woke up at 1pm on a Saturday when we were kids and I was getting ready to order pizza and he stopped me and demanded that we eat cereal for breakfast first.
Just because itâs ârelaxingâ time, doesnât mean you canât also branch out and do some challenging stuff. What if the most fun youâll ever have in OSRS is a certain boss but you never find out because youâre locked in to ârelaxing timeâ mentality?
Idk Iâm rambling. Play how you want. Just encouraging you to branch out :)

u/Doctor_Kataigida Jul 28 '26
Yeah I just don't want it to be entirely idle. I still like the idea of an MMO being something you have to actively play to progress. It's much more interesting from a community and hiscores standpoint. Melvor is right there for folks who want that.
-1
u/NorthernCountess Jul 28 '26
i think idle is wrong and too much and makes the game more boring and less rewarding if you can just fully 7 plus minute afk skilling (imo stuff like stars and salvaging go a bit too far, thats not even relaxing gameplay rly thats just "i want xp without playing"). i dont think we should confuse idle w relaxing and cozy.
most of the popular cozy games arent like idle games anyway. ppl dont think animal crossing is a high intensity game just because its more actions per minute than fishing karambwans. vale totems is a cozy activity but not afk, as are a lot of traditional skilling methods that dont involve tick manipulation or that werent specifically designed to be high intensity. chopping willows or fishing salmon is comfy etc.
3
u/FlameanatorX Quest Dialogue Enjoyer Jul 28 '26
I agree with most of your comment, except for the beginning. There's nothing wrong with "idle gameplay" in OsRs as long as it's balanced appropriately. I've done plenty of stars/salvaging, but I've also done plenty of Vale Totems, farming runs, Wintertodt, or for an kinda afk but not "idle" example, Motherload Mine upper area (all chill non-idle).
It all has its place in the game and it's all worth doing if you want that kind of gameplay or depending on the amount of time/energy you have available to devote to the game.
To return to the question of balance: I've done plenty of Motherload Mine, volcanic ash mining, Weiss salt mining, Zalcano, and power-mining iron in the mining guild, even though I could have simply exclusively "idled" on shooting stars. Why did I do that? It's because the relatively pitiful amount of gems per hour you get from mining stars, while it adds up over time, is way less useful than all the ores from motherload, the utility of ultracompost and niche TPs, unidentified minerals to get maxed mining gloves for better amethyst mining, etc. This is especially true because said gem acquisition was nerfed when Jagex realized shooting stars had been overbuffed and were now OP.
Are they still OP? Probably slightly, they could maybe do with a slight downward nudge in xp rates relative to other methods, especially at lower mining levels. But they aren't (nearly) so OP that it feels bad to train your mining in other ways just because shooting stars exist and you enjoy doing (lots of) afk training in the game.

u/Professional-Map3958 Jul 28 '26
People don't have the time to sink active playtime into achieving high level reqs and goals, so it makes sense that afk is highly desired. afk to the point where they can just leave the game on and get xp while doing chores, working, etc. This is always going to be the case unless active methods get massive xp/hr buffs
When runescape classic came out, nobody really thought players would be getting 99s due to the massive time sink. And that was when the audience was like young teens coming home from middle school and playing all night long. A lot of that was due to not just the time sink but also how inconvenient skills were to train. now almost every 99 is very accessible, and has easy afk methods. Everyone can get 99s, which is great, but most people are getting half of their 99s at work, which is not great for the health of skilling
I dont like to afk personally, when I want to play the game I want to play actively, or at least be social while skilling if im doing something slower pace. Not to say its wrong to enjoy afk, but I think a lot of afk methods definitely start to overstep. in the context of runescape, afk shouldnt mean literally get up and walk away and just leave the game running. people will hate it, but i dont think runescape should be designed around people trying to play in the background at work. we're making updates and content for people who are literally not playing the game. im sorry but like tabbing over once every 10 minutes to click once is just not playing the game. i dont understand why updates and changes are made to cater to this "playstyle" when these players dont actually interact with the game for 60%+ of their time played. Sailing is a huge problem point for this. Salvaging is so ridiculously good that it makes pretty much every other training method incredibly undesirable. which really sucks when the gameplay loop of other training methods is really really fun, and very unique to just this skill

5

4
u/Orthed Jul 28 '26
Wyrm course?
Actually that would only be 6 clicks per minute I think.
1
u/falconfetus8 Jul 28 '26
That's better, actually.
Also, I just did the math and realized that 8 clicks per minute is 1 click every 7.5 seconds, which is actually a lot more realistic than I initially imagined.
1
u/Alone-Horse2857 Jul 29 '26
I'll be real, I just started the Wyrm. It's the same shit as the rest of agility. I don't get the "afk" vibe people are saying, you're still clicking often, only difference is the animations take longer.
There's also a weird pause between two of the obstacles right in the middle that's like a 1 second animation instead of 15, and it's like chinese water torture, you never know when the next drop is going to hit.
I'd honestly rather go back to brim and spam the same traps over and over because at least it's consistent.

Agility training is incredibly chilled and very afk (click a few times a minute) and is the perfect wind down whilst watching something in the background.
It's convenient and fun, and I'm tried of pretending that it isn't. Out of the 3 99s I've got (Hunter, Agility and Thieving - in that order) it's the chillest of the 3.
8
u/Doctor_Kataigida Jul 28 '26
Afk traditionally has meant 30+ seconds of idling after a click (like in the 2000s, Fishing and Woodcutting were called afk skills). A few clicks per minute isn't afk, though I do agree it's chill. But afk is more "set and forget for a bit" not 5-10 seconds at a time.

Idk, I think Runescape being the one of the only MMORPGs where you can easily and meaningfully AFK different skills is one of the things that sets it apart from any other game, in a positive way.
18
u/7_Tales Jul 28 '26
its so low resources you can deadass have it as a little box on your screen and do something extremely inefficient but feel dopamine anyway. Its absolutely a point in the games favour - it boosts membership and that helps fund jagex for us active players.
2
u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26
Yeah, I dont think that the game needs to have 0 afk methods. Having something u can throw on the second monitor is nice. Its simply that people always want more, especially on this sub
2
u/Jormungandr69 Jul 28 '26
Yeah don't get me wrong, I do understand what you're saying. If a lot of folks had it their way, there would be a 750k xp/hr AFK training method for every skill. And a part of me does miss a time when more folks would actively play the game, often for less experience, simply because it was fun (2010 f2p Clan Wars on w141, my beloved)
1

u/tchnl Jul 28 '26
I get where you're coming from, but if it wasn't for more relaxed training I kinda doubt this game would've been as popular as it is now.
-7
u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26
Yeah. I think that having a handful of afk methods over the entire game is fair, its just that its becoming oversaturated, and people just keep asking for more.
15
u/Iron_Aez 2376 Jul 28 '26
Skilling is oversaturated? Consider counting how many bosses there are
5
u/TheNamesRoodi 2376 Total GM Jul 28 '26
I might be reaching, but he might be saying there are too many very strong afk methods nowadays. Back in the day, woodcutting yews was afk and the trees would randomly fall. Regular fishing was afk and it wasn't that long that you could actually afk. There was no afk mining or runecraft. Etc. etc.
Nowadays we have 30 minute afk (for really bad xp I know) salvaging, 7 minutes redwood 7 to like 3 minute afk bwans, afk mining methods, zeah rc... stuff like that.
I personally love afk skilling, but I can understand where he's coming from and he might be saying that skilling is becoming very afk
0
u/Iron_Aez 2376 Jul 28 '26
All afk methods are strictly worse than playing actively. Anyone doing them is being inefficient and hurting their own progress.
With that in mind, if someone want to do them, they are the one and only content in the game they have absolutely 0 reason to do.
2
u/TheNamesRoodi 2376 Total GM Jul 28 '26
Right, but when methods are as afk as they are, people don't talk nearly as much. Makes the game a little less social which is sad. That's the only bit I don't like.
I will say however, that the conversations in modern day rs are weird as hell most of the time.

skilling sure. Combat on the other hand, was ruined by being able to go to sleep and train for 6 hours in NMZ, as well as things like splashing on a rat for 6 hours. People got 99 all combat stats effortlessly.

6
u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26
He said skilling is oversaturated. Im not talking about skilling. And bossing is a stupid comparison. There are very few bosses that feel anything alike, where every single afk method feels the exact same because it is by definition click and walk away.Â
-1
u/PracticalLychee180 Jul 28 '26
The analogy is to something else oversaturated, not to something else afk. Jesus, im sorry your reading comprehension is lackluster but I was able to understand his analogy perfectly fine
7
u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26
Yeahhh, did you read my full comment? I also replied to his analogy since my original reply displeased you. Bossing isnt oversaturated.
0
u/PracticalLychee180 Jul 28 '26
So you failed to understand the analogy, then replied to me, not OP, to their analogy, by missing the point of the analogy. Cool. Bossing can be oversaturated without feeling like afk, so your comment misses the point by pretending that it isnt oversaturated BECAUSE its not like afk activities

4
u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26
Less interesting less fun less meaningful
1
u/Send_Me_Dachshunds Ban Gold Buyers Jul 28 '26
Fortunately every skill has a more active method if you find that style more interesting, fun or meaningful.
2
u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26
Active methods are made less meaningful by the existence of comprable afk methods
1
u/superraiden Jul 28 '26
My juicy steak is made worse by other people eating leather
Just don't use the slow AFK methods if you don't like them?
Also what does meaningful even mean?
13
u/rws531 Jul 28 '26
Not really an opinion, just wrong⌠unless you can qualify how the game is deteriorating without ignoring how popular it is now.
5
u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26
I dont think you know what an opinion is. I think that the more afk and low effort the game becomes, the worse it becomes.
3
u/PracticalLychee180 Jul 28 '26
Then why are you here? RS has had overwhelming afk activities since long before Osrs, I remember cutting Ivy in Ardy on RS2. If you think it has deteriorated the game, why would you play it? Unless you dont actually believe this opinion
9
u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26
Because I enjoy it. The game getting worse does not preclude me from enjoying it
1
u/PracticalLychee180 Jul 28 '26
My point is it was always afk, so if afk methods make it bad, then you enjoy it being bad, and your opinion is meaningless. Its like saying pizza has been deteriorating for 3 decades due to how they make it, yet you still eat pizza multiple times per week because you enjoy how its made.
You gonna claim youve never once engaged in afk methods or was it okay when it benefitted you but bad when it doesnt?
7
u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26
Theyre adding shit like fully afk salvage for 30 minutes lol. I dont care if you could afk chop a tree when I started playing, but since I started the amount of ridiculously strong afk methods has gotten much much higher, and the length of afking gets longer. Thats bad
→ More replies (2)1
u/ANGEL-PSYCHOSIS btw Jul 28 '26
salvaging being so insanely afk and getting good exp rates and loot on top was really an achillies heel to sailing, sure youd 99 a lot faster doing trials, but youd get nothing out of it except xp. and up until recently youd probably lose more resources than youd gain doing bounty tasks, and courier tasks will continue to be absolutely troll until they finally impliment loot bags from them. so if you didnt like trial laps... you basically only had a skill your actual only option was to afk.
granted, you do have some real incentives to level it regardless, but they dont feel nearly as necessary as say... herblore or crafting, but theres also very few quest requirements attached like mining and woodcutting currently have, and even then mining has amethyst and (now finally) woodcutting has seeker arrows, whilst sailings benefits are more nebulous and mostly restricted to irons.
4
u/Sleazehound Jul 28 '26
How can you not understand theyâre saying a few afk methods for a few skills is fine, but for it to not only apply to all skills but with updates making afk last more than 5 minutes cheapens the journey

u/runningoutofphosphor Jul 28 '26
Even if it's way slower?
3
u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26
Yes. Its sort of a moot point nowadays as agility is really the only skill without an afk method (except house agility course) but itr more of like the turbo afk methods like stars and full 30 min afk trawling and salvage that are really unhealthyÂ
2
u/runningoutofphosphor Jul 28 '26
I'm not up to date with sailing. But star mining, which maxes out at 30k/h for one click every 7 minutes, seems fine with me, when granite maxes out at 125k/h. More than 4x the xp/h. As long as it doesn't get absurdly afk like 6h nmz or splashing back then...
3
u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26
Yeah. I dont think they need removed. I just think that its worth avoiding adding more click once every 7 minutes and get 0.25 ehp.Â
1
u/rws531 Jul 28 '26
So by âdeterioratingâ you just meant âworseâ with no qualification⌠makes sense.
5
u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26

4
u/rws531 Jul 28 '26

This? I wouldnât really call it a crusade when people are asking to revert a change⌠not even add anything new.
That said, I feel the only thing wrong with Zeah rc is that you canât chisel multiple essence while running without doing it manually. Having movement cancel that type of action is inconsistent with crafting and fletching.

Itâs not reverting a change lmao. It was like that for 2 weeks and then in its current stare for 9 years. Can we also revert the change where tumekenâs shadow accuracy applied to ice barrage?

Fair enough, itâs not a crusade to ask âis it time to revert this update?â though.
I did most of my 99 RC grind between Daeyalt and ZMI, since Daeyalt timers were at least consistent, unlike Zeahs.

Runescape was a rock clicking sim before it ever had bosses
2
u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26
Emphasis on the clicking

u/CheriColaProduct Jul 28 '26
WC and Fishing was one click maybe every 20-40 seconds since the release of rs2
I was there

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26
Perfect! One click every 40 seconds is much better then 1 click every 7 minutes, or 30

u/CheriColaProduct Jul 28 '26
Well it didnt take long for people to discover splashing

u/Ocarious Jul 28 '26
Mhm, even 1 click every 5 minutes is better then every 7. Trying to compare the afk levels of 2004-7 to now is just stupid. Theyre not even in the same universeÂ

https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Guide:AFK_Skilling_Methods
Forgive me I havent tried these 7 minute methods and am mostly unaware of them, to be fair Im not finding any
Looks like magics and yews are still near the top of that list with a few newer trees replacing them as most afk
Edit: my bad i didnt sort the list and now i see what you mean

Typical take from someone who plays the game and enjoys it?

Yes and no, as someone who absolutely hates afk skilling theres nothing wrong with variety. We just dont need to oversaturate skills with afk stuff and have methods that are active be appropriately rewarding (bloodwood trees are a great example of this)
