Generic system error at boot ("An error has occurred. Hold down the POWER Button...")

Hi everyone,

I'm stuck with a New 2DS XL that immediately displays the black system error screen upon turning it on. I cannot get past it to reach the Home Menu.

Here is what I've tested so far:

Booting without MicroSD: Still gives the exact same error screen immediately.

Luma3DS / SELECT menu: Placed a fresh boot.firm (latest Luma3DS) on a FAT32 formatted MicroSD card. Holding SELECT at boot does nothing — direct black error screen.

Recovery Mode: Holding L + R + D-Pad Up + A boots into the System Update screen. However, trying to update says the console is already up to date.

Since it doesn't trigger Luma, I can't launch a CTRTransfer to fix the SysNAND.

Could this be a corrupted HOME Menu / SysNAND issue that requires ntrboot (flashcart + magnet) to force GM9 execution?
Could this be a hardware fault (e.g., faulty Wi-Fi module, bad MicroSD slot, or dying NAND chip)?

Any advice on what to test next would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

the console is not modded at all (you would get a luma3ds errdisp if it was). in order to find out what is wrong, you will need to mod it using the NTRboot method. but knowing the n2dsxl, its probably hardware failure.

(Just asking out of curiousity) does the N2DSXL have a lot of hardware issues?

Without the arm11 exception handler being on (which luma would have on by default, but since its inaccessible nothing we can do) its hard to tell whats the issue.

Hardware wise this wouldn’t be the screens being an issue. Since you are getting a screen, that means the power on self test passed, which only cares about the backlights.

But, ive seen this error happen due to a bad wifi module, which unfortunately is a pain to fix on all the new models since theyre soldered on.

If you had a flashcart laying around Id try that, but unsure if anything would be fixed unless it was corrupted software, but IIRC outside of bootrom issues, doesnt B9S boot before that?

My friend had this problem. If there's a popping sound (might be faint, listen closely) then there's a hardware issue. If there isn't, try clearing HOME menu extdata with L + R + D-pad Up + B
