A legally blind U.S. Navy veteran was
stopped because his folded mobility cane was mistaken for a handgun.
On October 31, 2022, in Lake City, Florida, 61-year-old James Hodges was walking home after jury duty was canceled when a deputy stopped him over a misunderstanding that quickly raised questions about police training, disability awareness, and accountability.
After the incident, Hodges requested the body camera footage and filed a formal complaint, prompting an investigation by the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.
