Question Need advice/ recommendations for AC units that can work with a basement unit.

My only window in a new place I rent is a small rectangular hopper with a screen, and I'm wondering what is the best way to put an AC unit in this room. Never dealt with anything other than window units but I know a window unit would never fit there. Would I look for portable ACs in this case? How should I go about properly managing to fit the window casing for the pump? My landlord is saying there's plug in AC units that exist without a hose but I'm not so sure about that.

Question Condensor compatibility with head units

I'm getting a new split-system multi-head unit installed.

I want to buy a multi-head condenser to future proof when I close in a space and want another head unit it. But that might be 6 - 12 months away before I get around to closing in the space.

I'll install one head unit straight away. But what to do with the other....

One school of thought is to buy the 2nd head unit now but I'm worried about warranty if it's not installed for a while.

The other school of thought is to wait and buy a head unit later when I'm ready, but i've been told i risk head units not being compatible with the condenser in the future.

The 2nd point has me concerned, if that's the case, then it would mean that if I want to change the head unit in the future, I might have to replace the condenser as well.

Either way I know I'll be up for extra labour costs when the 2nd unit is installed.

What would you do? Is the compatibility of head unit to condenser actually a thing?

Central AC Have a question regarding parts/shipping

Hello, reporting from Las Vegas, Nevada, where it is hotter than the hinges on the door to hell. Our central AC went out last Wednesday morning. Our tech came out and said it is the motherboard (I think?) essentially the brain of the unit. He ordered the part last Wednesday evening and it is still not here yet. From what I have read, these are not parts that are typically kept in stock locally and it is pretty normal that it could take a week or so to get here. Just wanted to ask actual people that are knowledgeable if that sounds right? He is keeping us kind of updated, I know he is really busy so I don’t want to bug him too much. My husband did put window units in all the bedrooms so at least we are cool as long as we’re in the rooms. Thank you in advance.

Window AC Window AC keeps leaking into my apartment

Post image
24 Upvotes

My parents bought me this window AC brand new last year. It worked great last summer and I had no issues.

This summer it started leaking at the corner. It was originally in my living room and we assumed it was because it wasn’t tilted enough to account for drainage. We moved it into my kitchen because it made more dense there anyway for unrelated reasons. It stopped leaning but then started again.

My bf took it out of the window and took it apart and cleaned the drip tray or whatever it’s called. It was full of algae and slime and build up. That lasted about a month, maybe less, and it started leaking again. It leaks A LOT. It makes a whole body towel sopping wet after 2 hours. It’s unmanageable and I can’t have it on when it’s leaking like this but as you can see I created a contraption to catch the water.

This is definitely temporary though and it’s already breaking and letting water through. It’s in the high 80s this week and I know summer is almost over but is this going to happen with every window AC? I have two cats and live in the country. I would take it out myself and clean it but I live on the 2nd floor and it’s heavy so someone else has to help me and I don’t have help like that. My bf said he wouldn’t do it again because it’s hard to get in and out.

Are there better ACs for this? I don’t want to use portable ones it’s just more clutter. My cats are panting because it’s so hot in my apartment without the AC. I’m at a loss and I’m not sure if this is even normal. Does it need to be tilted more? The person who helped me install said it’s tilted enough to where it should drip outside the window and even he’s confused why it’s doing this. My bf said the inside was gross and full of so much gunk.

Please help :,)

Portable AC Toshiba PX0611CWRU Portable AC says it's full and needs to be drained, but there's no water in it

Just as it says, I heard the 8 beeps last night so this morning I went to empty it. I removed the drain cap and tilted the machine back... nothing came out.

What's my next step? The manual doesn't give me any information on this. As a mechanically minded guy, my first thought is the water level sensor, but I've never worked on an AC before.

New AC ringing

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all,

I purchased a new AC specifically because it was supposed to be very quiet. Its been a couple of days and it's making this weird ringing noise. Is this normal or should I return it asap? I don't mind the humm of the fan and other low noises ACs tend to make but the high frequency ring is messing with my sleep.

Lennox vs Rheem

Hi Everyone,

Recently got a quote from 2 companies with AC estimates (outdoor unit and indoor relay) in northern NJ. First quote was for a Lennox 3 ton unit, the lowest tier, through Costco for $15,470, with this though it comes with a 10% “cash back” giftcard of $1,547 bringing the net total down to about $14,000. We do use Costco so that cash back wouldn’t go to waste. We would most likely do 12 months of interest free payments as that would be the same price as paying in full. Second is a Rheem through PSEG, the total price of this one is $14,317, they offer 72 months of interest free payments (credit check required, but not worried about that). Based off prices and hopefully enough info I’ve included can anyone please help recommend which unit to go with? We would like to keep our house around 72-74 degrees in the summer.

TCL H6W23W

I recently bought a TCL H6W23W off of Facebook marketplace and the seller didn’t tell me it wouldn’t come with the installation kit. It only came with the side panels. Any suggestions? Is there a way to buy an after market installation kit?

Portable AC Maintenance on portable units

Anyone else have luck? ive had this portable unit for about a year thats always on. I pull it apart every few months to clean it/dry it. My family members say its unnecessary but they're also the type of people to never clean them then just buy a new one when it stops working. but if i dont clean it my sinuses get stuffed because of the mildew and dust that is caught inside.

My question is: does anyone else actually do this too? Do you think it prolongs their life? Has it prolonged the life of yours?

This icon is lit up on my ac display and I’m not sure what it means. I’ve looked up the manual and it doesn’t tell me anywhere what it is. AC model is Vissani 10,000 BTU Inverter Window Air Conditioner. Thanks!

My a/c is2.5 years old. I have been told to switch over to the newer ac as there is a program available to help with the costs. Should I switch or stay with the one I have. The a/c is working perfectly and is under warranty.

Car AC RV AC NOT COOLING EMERGENCY

Hi everyone. I’m on a really tough time constraint. We have an RV AC repair man with us and he can’t figure it out.

Yesterday we were running the RV AC in very hot weather. In the morning it was working fine, gradually started blowing hot air.

We replaced the capacitor, compressor was working. Still hot air.

Replaced the entire unit. Not working.

Replaced the control panel. Still hot air.

What the hell could this be and how could it have stopped working within a day??

Edit: the compressor is not getting enough power. 68V, but it's brand new.

Window AC Awning / Window Shade for Window AC Advice?

Apologies if this isn't quite the right sub. This isn't specifically about an AC, but more for an accessory for an AC that I don't want to mess up!

At my home (Southern US) I've got three window AC's installed, and by and large they work fine. But one is on a side of the house that when it rains, water easily enters the unit and blows out the front, while another is directly under a pine tree, which is resulting in numerous pine needles falling into the top opening of the unit, getting caught by the fan and gumming things up.

I figured the solution to both problems would just be to put a window shade or awning above the window unit. But as I read on them, most discussions were about them increasing efficiency from not having the sun directly on the unit vs the shade causing the window unit to fail to exhaust correctly and pulling back in hot air it's blowing out.

So. Can I get any suggestions? What would be a "safe" height from top of the unit to bottom of the shade to install one so that it doesn't exhaust into itself? Any alternative solutions to these problems? I've also seen foam mats for water, but for the same exhaust problem can't leave the unit running while using one. Though did consider putting the foam mat on top of the awning for sound if I go that route...

Anyway, any advice is appreciated!

Central AC Open pipe blowing cold air

Window AC Midea U shape AC bracket too small?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi All,

Looking for some advice. It seems as though my window sill depth in combination with the lip doesn’t allow the bracket to fit. Basically I can try to get it to rest on the outside sill but it’s an uneven surface and I’d imagine it slips.

In a perfect world it goes under that lip and rests on the wall but if I get it there the whole bracket is slanted down.

Any suggestions?

Window AC Window unit that can be disassembled to clean?

We had the u-shaped Midea units that were recalled, and replaced them with similar Hisense window units…. which have mold all over the rotating blower fan piece after one season. I tried my best to disassemble it, but pieces are glued together and they clearly don’t intend for you to reach that piece.

When search, people talk about cleaning filters, but I am really hoping to find something that can be opened up and wiped down. Does this exist? At this point, happy to trade other features if I can actually maintain it.

Question Hard start

2 year old AC is working, but when I had the installer do a checkup, he said the hard start was shorted out by a bug, and not functioning. I said I would wait to replace it for now. Since it was optional when I bought the system, it seems like it would be ok but some people say it's not necessary for a newer system while others say it's needed to prevent failure. Is there a consensus on this?
