Most of my family holds at least some amount of religiousness behind Christianity. We all went to church fairly often as kids, my 2 siblings, my parents, and I, grew up pretty strongly Christian, and my dad grew up catholic and has been working for some administrative catholic diocese thing for decades now I think.

We haven’t been to church in a while, but now both siblings have partners that are fairly religious, and my mom holds a strong core to that faith even tho we rarely ever go to church(pretty much never). Completely aside from the fact that I don’t really think they’re Christian anyway, I think I’ve awkwardly realized that I’m uncomfortable with the tabooness around these conversations and weighs on me to some extent when I reserve my ideas. Now rarely have I said in front of them that I’m 100% atheist or even agnostic but I feel as though ive at least clearly communicated that I have some heavy questioning around this idea to all of them.

The thing is though, not once have they ever tried to push these beliefs onto me or ever directly made me feel less than so for not believing, but I think part of that has to do with them not being truly Christian themselves, but again they largely hold this strong faith behind something related to the Bible. And I feel like there’s too high of a chance that bringing this up and digging into what exactly they believe happens after death, and why, would only make things worse. And to be clear things really aren’t that bad… I think. Maybe I should just let things kind of float the way they are. It’s not a pressing concern day to day or even week to week sometimes. But it pops into my head every so often and it has a deep note to it sometimes. It’s not any potent disconnection from my family but it has to do with very foundational beliefs and can be a bit lonely in that aspect. I’m the kind of agnostic where I could probably defend the Bible better than most of my family if it really came down to it, and that doesn’t always sit well with me.

A teenage boy has told a Sydney court he was considering carrying out a mass terror attack motivated by Islamic extremism in the CBD after being radicalised on social media.

He was 14 years old when federal police arrested him in August 2024 at his Western Sydney home, where officers found more than 40 videos on his computer featuring extremist content.

He told the court on Tuesday he was first exposed to extremist material on TikTok earlier in 2024 and "found it very interesting".

The court heard the content he consumed online on various sites became increasingly radical and violent, before the boy began communicating digitally with other people about his extremist views.

The court heard the boy spoke to people online about potential attack sites, including the Sydney Opera House and at the Sydney Marathon, showing interest in emulating the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing.

Court documents show the boy attempted to obtain instructions on how to make a pressure cooker bomb.

The documents show he also attempted to contact the surviving man who carried out the Boston Marathon attack, which involved homemade pressure cooker bombs.

I really don’t know if this is the correct subreddit (if not I’m sorry). I am atheist and my best friend is a Christian. I really don’t mind because she is mostly respectful about it. But she has a best friend ill call E. I never liked E, and only hung out with her because of our mutual friend. E is also a Christian and I didn’t think much of it because I have religious friends and stuff. But she isn’t the Christian who is normal, she is so fucking annoying about it. About a year ago when I came out to her as a lesbian, she was extremely uncomfortable and kinda homophobic, saying I’ll go to hell and stuff. I don’t know why I stayed friends with her after that. But about a month ago, I had a sleep over with her and our mutual friend. We were just chilling when our mutual friend casually mentioned I didn’t have the same beliefs as them. And she says that she can’t support me. We all brushed it off but I’m pretty sure she was serious. But today was the breaking point. I sat with E and our mutual friend at lunch, and E was talking about Charlie Kirk and how she believed some of the things he said, and she said abortion should be illegal. She even said in cases of rape no one should get an abortion. But she doesn’t know I got raped when I was younger. I thankfully didn’t get pregnant but if I did, I could not carry that man’s baby. I would honestly go insane. But thats besides the point. Shes also lwk racist, transphobic, homophobic (even though she’s dated a girl), and harasses people when they’re not Christian. (She also said that I would go to hell for trying to k*ll myself because it’s a sin) So how do I, in the politest way, tell her to stfu. Because our mutual friend will always take E’s side because they have the same beliefs, so I can’t ask her. What should I do?

I have to get this off my chest. Religious people are so stupid.

Why do these people to this day support something so horrid. Religion oppresses and controls certain groups of people. Like you cannot be a femenist, or be supportive of homosexuality, or people of other cultures, etc. as a religious person. Why in the world do you believe this random book that was written years and years ago by some randoms? Alright then, I guess my religion is Harry Potter because I like magic and the author is a horrible person. Honestly I wouldn’t be too far off because that’s what religious people are. I’m just so exhausted and tired of them spreading their propaganda. Like, idgaf, I won’t hate on them irl, but they will spread their “gospel” (shit from an ass) and act as if they’re the best. People are brainwashed.
They need to get a life, and ‘believe’ in science because it’s ACTUALLY true.

So i live in a predominantly religious country (Orthodox christians) and every time i make a seemingly good and genuine connection - people at school, work, any neighbours and so on, the religious aspect always ruins everything, because they cannot fathom the fact that some people are not believers and i also can’t take them seriously (kind of find them stupid, really out of touch, vain, no critical thinking skills etc.); i almost stop seeing them as people..?

I find myself constantly getting disappointed and i lately push people away because of this.
Have you guys struggled with this? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I think it’s crazy how people thank Jesus for what happens in the world. What does he have to do with anything.

For some context I’m an atheist and my boyfriend is catholic.

I’m very familiar with catholicism as I grew up around it the second I was born. Most of my family and his family are catholic.

He would like to get married in a church. I don’t want to. Realistically, we could get married at a church as we both have done our church paperwork when we were young.

He has told me his family would also like to see him get married at a church. I have talked to him about it, I have mentioned before if he’s ever sad he won’t ever marry into the church if we do last.

He said he doesn’t care and that his family doesn’t control him. Which is true. But the reason I have this unnecessary guilt is because he’s the only boy in the family.

He has one male nephew that’s like 5 years old and that’s it. The rest are women. And it’s all Hispanic family. We are both Hispanic with heavily catholic family members. His family don’t know I’m an atheist. I’m pretty sure my own family don’t even know. I’m too scared to tell them. I’m also scared once this family knows, they will tell him he’s with the devil or something. I know how Hispanic moms can be with sons, especially if they only have one son.

The main reason I’m scared too is because as I grew up my mom has told me if someone marries a non believer without the church. They both go to hell, as the believer chose the non believer over God.

Look I don’t know how true that is as but mostly he was told the same or somewhat similar. I obviously don’t believe that. But I know he does. He have talked and he said his only request is having crosses around the house. Which I’m okay with it, I don’t want to hide his faith around his own house too. But I’m also scared he and others will think he may go to hell once he dies because he loves me too much to put his religion first(??) he is kinda scared of death and I don’t want him too think the last thing he gonna see is hell.

I’m not asking for advice or many support. I’m just here to rant.
