No advice, just support. Can’t believe I’m saying it “out loud”…

I got cheated on.

Yup. My perfect relationship has been tainted with an awful mistake. Not engaged or married yet but we are (were?) in a very serious relationship and working toward that.

We’re working past it. It hurts. It sucks. But for the first time, I’m telling someone. The accountability is there. The ‘affair’ has been stopped. We’re working on navigating and growing trust once again.

I didn’t want to embarrass myself or my partner and I didn’t want the advice of anyone since this is my decision solely and I didn’t want to be influenced or judged for making it, so I haven’t told anyone. I’m sure that all of us here know how harshly people who stay are judged; but to me, it is worth it to rebuild. I believe mistakes can be made and someone can still be your person. I believe a soulmate is both found and made in a person, and that person can and will still make mistakes.

Not looking for advice; just some encouraging words and/or stories from other people, hopefully mature couples, who have moved past this and are happy and healthy together.

Thank you

Advice MUST include examples of your R. Not prescriptive advice. Partner cheated on me and our sex life has been better than ever

I found out my partner cheated on me last week just before a trip to london with my younger brother.
I found out because he confessed to me while drunk and I found a video of a girl sucking on dildo and him dirty talking her on his phone. I’m understandably very angry with him and broke up with him but over the weekend we became closer and closer again. I feel some emotional disconnect from the situation not in a way that i don’t care but in I don’t want to put energy into it. I still love him very much and he’s begging me to reconcile with him and i’m almost considering it.
Back to the main point. We’ve had sex a few times since and it’s intense and very good. I don’t fully understand why the cheating has made our sexual chemistry so much better and i’m very worried this won’t last and it’ll all come crashing down very soon.

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) Just found out, 3 months postpartum... after he put me through hell for cheating.

I will try to keep this as brief as possible, there is a lot to keep up with. I will try to break up it into major events. TW* ABORTION, DRUG USE, SUICIDE ATTEMPTS

Late 2024, my (at the time) 10 year relationship began to spiral. We have been together since we were 17. Our son was close to turning 2. We both fell into a horrible depression after getting an abortion.

THE ABORTION

A couple of months before our son was to turn 2, I fell pregnant. I was under the impression we were trying for baby #2. Apparently, we were not. He wanted an abortion. He felt we weren't ready for baby #2. I felt we were. I wanted this baby very badly. I agreed to the abortion anyways. I was not going to have another child with him if he wasn't ready for it. This caused us both to spiral.

THE SPIRAL

We both already suffer from mental health issues, past addictions, and overcoming our mutual abuse in the beginning of our relationship when we were younger (never cheating). The abortion caused him to spiral into a major depressive episode. He refused to eat, refused to get out of bed, refused to help me through the abortion. He went to work, came home, and slept.

I was very depressed. I needed him. The abortion halfway failed, I had to go to the emergency room multiple times. They gave me another pill to flush out the rest of the fetus. I bled for months. I became unhealthy. I had to care for our child, and deal with my crazy MIL (different story). And he rotted in bed. I grew resentful. I began to rage out. I started heavily drinking, bringing up old situations from the past that we had moved on from. I withdrew from my child. My MIL took on the brunt of parenting for both of us. I found comfort in other men. I started a plan to leave, with another man.

He found out when he went through my phone. The way it broke him, broke me. I spiraled harder. I self sabotaged more. I tried to end my life. I started using cocaine again with a new friend. I couldn't handle the underlying postpartum, the grief of the abortion, the resentment toward my partner, the guilt of breaking his heart, the guilt of betraying my son. I tried to run off with the other man again. It lasted a week or two, before I realized I just couldn't fucking do this anymore. I needed to go home, to make everything right, and to be with my son. I checked myself into a hospital.

THE RECONCILATION

After a 2 week stay and getting on medication, my partner took me back in. He had began working on himself already. He was feeling much better. There were rules and stipulations I had to follow in order to come back and make things work. I did them all, without argument. Things seemed to be working out. We were doing good. I felt good, he felt good, we were healthy parents again. A year to date after the abortion, I fell pregnant again.

THE PREGNANCY

We decided to go through with it. Suddenly, there was a shift in my partner. He no longer forgave me. He started berating me, putting me down, getting cold and distant. Our relationship went through the ringer. He denied the baby as being his the whole pregnancy. Starting denying our first son. Got a DNA test for our first. Started becoming close friends with all the girls at work. I got a gut feeling. I begged and begged. Who is she? Who is she? Why won't you touch me anymore? Who is she?

You're crazy, he said. I'm not a broken person like you. I would never. You're projecting.

I went insane. My whole pregnancy, I went crazy. I thought maybe it's the hormones, I am projecting, I am crazy. He would never. Why do all this work, right? He would never. I lost a lot of people during my pregnancy. 4 deaths. He switched locations at work and got a raised. I got through the other side with a beautiful healthy baby boy. We were overjoyed. Things were great again. He demanded a DNA test, then changed his mind.

Then, he got depressed again.

HIS DEPRESSION

He got so bad, a month postpartum I drove him to the hospital. I stayed home with our 2 children by myself while he got the help he needed. He got out, started meds. Adjusting to them was hard. The side affects were difficult. I had to keep an eye on him for a few weeks as the depression worsened. Then, he got better. It started working. I finally was able to breathe, and with that, I started to grief the deaths I went through during pregnancy, and get a little depressed from the exhaustion of keeping up with everything while he was in the hospital.

THE TRUTH

3 months postpartum, a few days ago actually, i went to call my cousin on his phone. He left an incognito tab open. "I am literally obsessed with this girl at work. She laughs at all my jokes, i catch her staring at me and she catches me staring at her. I think she likes me back, but she is engaged and I have a wife and kids." what.............

I confront him. He finally fesses up. Some girl at his old job, lea. It happened when he took me back from the hospital in the very beginning. Lasted until I got pregnant. Old job? That is written in the present tense. No, he promises it's about her. She came into the store, and he started thinking about her again. Why? Because you're getting depressed again, he says. I'm afraid you will do that to me again, he says. ARE YOU KIDDING?

Then, he starts to trickle truth. There were more girls. He bought some of them lunch. Girls I questions him about and he denied, were girls he was messing with. Nothing physical happened, he says. Just flirting, texting.

He deleted leas number a month ago. A MONTH AGO? But she came into the store TWO DAYS AGO? and you ended it 18 MONTHS AGO? something isn't adding up.

Why was the log written in present tense? Idk, he says. I worded it wrong, he says. No. I don't buy it.

After everything you said to me? The person you thought I was for doing it? And then, you gaslight me through my whole pregnancy.....and....you're no better...

I'm sure there is so much more I have forgotten. I am beginning to shake as I type this. My mind is wandering everywhere. I can't form coherent sentences anymore. My baby is crying to be fed. I want my mother. But she died when I was pregnant.

What do I even say or do?

I caved and had sex with him twice since I found out. I guess I am trying to push the thought of her away? But can I? Does she currently work with him? Was it really an old fling? If it was, why are you thinking of her now? Why did you make my pregnancy hell if I was right all along? Why did you run to them for attention if me running away for attention was wrong?

We're not so different, are we babe?

Betrayed Perspective Only Living a relationship in secret

Dday was about 2 months ago now. I spent a few days not talking to him fresh after it happened but since then we had slowly slipped into each other's lives again. It felt as if he is the only one I could talk to about everything. We have been communicating for a while now but nobody knows and he is trying to make efforts to show me change and to see each other but I don't know why I care so much about other people's opinions of what my decision will be. I don't want to hide from everyone that I'm talking to him and that we see each other sometimes. I want to be with him I just tell him we are not together right now but that we will be. Why is it so hard for me to stop caring about my friends and families opinions, has anyone else severely struggled with this while going through R? How did you overcome it?

You’ve all seen my posts a thousand times. You’ve watched me talk about how I believe in my husband. How remorseful he was. How much I truly believed he could never. Would never do this to me again.

And he was saying these things to me, convincing me, while he was actively cheating on me again. 10 or so days ago, he was feeling insanely depressed, low, lonely, like I could leave as I work through my depression cycle. And so he went and googled some free chat site. Found a girl who lived about an hour away from us. And had some stupid fucking sexual bullshit meaningless affair. While I’m here begging him for love and attention? He was giving it to her. I read through all of the messages this time. So fucking dirty. All sex. Calling her baby. Daddy. All the things we say to each other? Just fucking did not care. All the pictures. Phone calls. Talking about how much they miss each other. How much they like each other.

It was nothing. It was a distraction. He just wanted to feel something. I actually believe this. But the fact that he sat there a thousand times and told me he could never cause me this pain ever again? All lies. I felt something off last weekend. And I looked at him and said “you could never do this to me again, right?” And he said “no. Absolutely not”. While he was literally texting her while we were on a date together. While he was taking photos of the view of our date and telling her it made him think of her and he missed her.

Doesn’t matter how convincing they are. There’s… actually something severely wrong with these people. And they will say whatever they need to in order to do what they want.

Advice MUST include examples of your R. Not prescriptive advice. Did a switch ever flip for you, out of no where?

I mean it’s barely been 2 months since DDay. We have been going to counseling and it has really helped, and he loves it and says he always looks forward to it. But these last few days I am so unbearably angry. I hate him. I hate him so much. I go to work and dread coming home. On my way home today I was screaming on the top of my lungs while driving. I am terrified at how angry I am, but I’m just thinking maybe I was bottling this up this whole time? I don’t want to hang out with him, I don’t want to be around him, he literally disgusts me. And this happened out of no where, I mean not “out of no where” bc I’ll randomly think about the AP or a song will remind me of the affair and it affects me, but never this much in the last 7 weeks I found out. I have no idea why I’m this angry now. I guess because I know I can never trust this person again. They lied behind my back for years. I am so beyond angry. I just want nothing to do with him. Has this ever happened to you when you were trying R? Did the feelings go away or just get worse? Thanks

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) Two Years Since DDay: From the depths of it to quiet calm stability

Hello,

It’s now officially been two years since DDay. For my backstory and one-year post, you can find it in my post history.

Looking back on the last two years, I can say that rebuilding has required a level of dedication, honesty, and self-examination that I don’t think I understood at the beginning.

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the affair, how I became capable of it, what parts of myself I had neglected or compartmentalized, and what has to be different in the way I live going forward.

I don’t necessarily think I need to consciously think about the affair every single day for the rest of my life. In fact, I hope there eventually comes a time when I can go days without thinking about it at all.

But I do want to carry what it taught me for the rest of my life.

Nothing changes if nothing changes.

For me, this has felt a lot like recovery. Because there isn’t a tremendous amount of media specifically about rebuilding yourself after committing infidelity, I’ve actually found a lot of wisdom in books and podcasts about addiction recovery: rigorous honesty, self-examination, understanding triggers, accountability, making amends where possible, and continuing the work even after the immediate crisis has passed.

The goal isn’t to stay in crisis forever.

The goal is to become different.

This will be a lifelong dedication to myself, to the people I love, and to the way I move through the world.

Two years later, my partner is doing substantially better than she was in those first terrible months. I watched the betrayal profoundly affect her emotional and physical well-being, and over time I have watched parts of her sense of safety slowly return.

It has taken two years for us to get here.

And I want to emphasize that everyone’s journey is wildly different.

We have slowly built a calmer, more stable routine at home. Things don’t feel like walking on eggshells all the time anymore. Triggers still happen, but they are less frequent. Questions still come up. Anxiety still comes up. There is still underlying pain and mistrust that I know did not exist in the same way before my actions.

I try to hold that with care rather than impatience.

My partner has found her own path through this. I have learned that I cannot dictate the timeline of someone else’s healing, and I cannot interpret a quiet day as evidence that something has been forgotten or completely resolved.

At the same time, we have had so many beautiful days.

There has been laughter. Jokes. Tears. Beautiful meals. Trips. Movies. Books read together. Projects around our home. Conversations about our future and what we might still build together.

I have had the privilege of being part of those moments with her.

I recognize how lucky I am to have that opportunity.

We talk about having children one day.

The really hard days are much less frequent now. The conversations where everything comes pouring out happen less often. The days where we both end up completely overwhelmed by grief are rare.

That doesn’t mean the injury is gone.

It means our life has gradually grown larger around it.

And I think that distinction matters.

We have a life that contains laughter, lightness, routine, affection, frustration, sadness, joy, work, dinner, errands, books, television, home repairs, and all the other incredibly ordinary things that make up a shared existence.

Honestly, I have developed a profound appreciation for the ordinary.

There was a period of my life where I was constantly chasing intensity: work, politics, organizing, friendships, social life, attention, stimulation. I thought being busy and activated meant I was alive.

Today I increasingly associate being alive with being present.

I take seriously my responsibility to protect the conditions that allow trust to exist between us.

That means thinking carefully about who I let into my life. It means understanding emotional boundaries. It means paying attention to the way I communicate with other people. It means being willing to examine myself when I feel lonely, resentful, insecure, entitled, burned out, or hungry for validation.

Most importantly, it means refusing to split myself into separate versions.

In the past, I was capable of compartmentalizing.

I could be one person in one part of my life and another person somewhere else.

I never want to live like that again.

I now live by my own mantra:

One Man, One Life.

No secret self.

No hidden worlds.

No private exceptions.

The same man in private that I am in public.

To me, healthy masculinity increasingly means learning to love bravely and honorably. It means restraint. Honesty. Accountability. Emotional maturity. Respect for boundaries. It means not expecting women to absorb the chaos that men refuse to confront within themselves.

Being a strong man does not mean dominating other people.

It means learning to govern yourself.

I’m not saying our life is perfect or that everything is suddenly fine and normal again.

It isn’t.

I recognize that I deeply hurt the person I love. I recognize that trust was shattered. I recognize that there may always be moments when questions or suspicion return because of choices I made.

That is part of what I have to live with.

But something else I have had to learn over these two years is that accountability and self-hatred are not the same thing.

For a long time, I think some part of me believed that feeling horrible about myself proved that I understood what I had done.

It doesn’t.

Shame can actually become another form of self-absorption if you let it.

The harder work has been learning how to hold remorse without allowing remorse to become my entire identity.

I cannot change the past by punishing myself forever.

I can honor what happened by living differently.

I can extend myself enough grace to keep growing while still taking complete responsibility for the harm I caused.

My worst actions are part of my story.

They are not the only thing I am allowed to become.

To couples who are on Day One after DDay and have chosen reconciliation: I obviously cannot tell you what your relationship will look like.

The road can be incredibly long and difficult.

There will probably be awful days. There may be setbacks. There will be moments when you wonder whether any of this is possible.

But I can say that, in my experience, life can slowly become larger than the crisis.

There can be joy again.

There can be boring Sunday mornings again.

There can be laughter that has nothing to do with the affair.

There can be nights where you simply eat dinner and watch something together and go to bed.

Those ordinary moments have become incredibly precious to me.

To other Waywards: I don’t pretend to have a universal roadmap.

I can only tell you what has helped me.

Therapy and serious self-reflection have mattered. Terry Real’s work has helped me enormously. I have found value in trauma-informed books, podcasts about recovery and personal growth, periods of quiet reflection, and listening to people who challenge me rather than simply reassure me.

Your toolkit may be completely different.

The specific resources matter less than whether you are willing to interrogate yourself honestly.

Ask yourself why you were capable of doing what you did.

Not to create an excuse.

To prevent yourself from ever doing it again.

Examine your relationships.

Examine your boundaries.

Examine your relationship with validation.

Examine your relationship with sex, attention, resentment, insecurity, anger, shame, and power.

And especially to other men who have been unfaithful: interrogate the masculinity you inherited.

Think about patriarchy not merely as some giant political system somewhere outside your front door, but as something that can show up in the smallest intimate interactions.

How do you relate to women?

How do you handle rejection?

How do you behave when you feel entitled?

Who carries the emotional labor in your relationships?

What happens when somebody tells you no?

What do you do with shame?

What do you do with desire?

What kind of man are you when nobody is watching?

Interrogate it all.

And then build something better.

The biggest lesson I have learned over the last two years is that change does not happen through one enormous act of redemption.

It happens through hundreds and thousands of incredibly ordinary decisions.

Tell the truth.

Respect the boundary.

Have the uncomfortable conversation.

Walk away from the validation.

Apologize without demanding forgiveness.

Notice the resentment before it becomes blame.

Take responsibility.

Be kind.

Come home.

Do it again tomorrow.

And eventually some of the things that once required enormous conscious effort begin to become part of your character.

I don’t know what the rest of my life will look like.

I hope my partner and I continue building this life together for a very long time.

But I also know something now that I did not understand as clearly two years ago:

My commitment to becoming a better man cannot depend entirely on whether my relationship survives.

I have to do this work because it is right.

Whether or not anyone applauds.

Whether or not everyone forgives me.

Whether or not somebody somewhere remains convinced that people cannot change.

My responsibility is not to force anyone to believe I have changed.

My responsibility is to live the evidence.

One man.

One life.

One set of values.

And after everything, I cannot tell you how much relief there is in a boring, normal, mundane life.

I don’t need my life to be constantly exciting anymore.

I want it to be honest.

I want it to be peaceful.

I want it to be loving.

I want to be present for it.

And I want to keep becoming someone I can respect.

my bf had betrayed my trust over 6 months ago but ever since ive been surveilling him like crazy, especially regarding his phone the initial betrayal was not physical or in person at all, but ever since even with the help of my therapist, I find it very difficult to believe his words and I see that he’s made so much of an effort to change and yet I still feel so stuck and scared. I’m going through his phone when he’s asleep at night to try to see if there’s any porn or if there’s any thing going on and sometimes I’ll find stuff and it’ll be from a while ago but in return I just feel worse. I really just need someone out there to help me. Tell me what to do so that I can stop I guess I just need help. please someone just talk to me i have no one in my life who is has been through this but me

No advice, just support. How did you deal with the trauma and pain?

It's been 3 weeks since the discovery, and I don't feel any better. I'm trying to do all the things I think I'm supposed to do: therapy, eating better, exercising, meditating, reading, writing, spending time with trusted friends. I can't bring myself to do my hobbies anymore. I just have these feelings of inadequacy, doubt, anger, sadness, and emptiness. I'm mired in a spiral of perpetual indecision and loss. I miss who I was. I miss what I thought I had. Every day is a new wave of emotional turmoil, and I know my WP can't stand it. I don't feel like I'm enough. I've hit my rock bottom, and I'm really trying to dig myself out. I just feel... broken. How did you deal with this? How did you recover?

No advice, just support. Infidelity turned my life into a mess

Almost 2 months since DDay. There were multiple women online that my (28F) WH (30M) talked to. I found the messages without him confessing. His defense was “I was doing it to see if I still have game”. He kept pursuing more people and I kept finding out for about a week after and at that point I got a hold of one of the women and messaged her letting her know that hey he is married. I do regret that now, as it caused a multitude of other issues. He felt immensely betrayed by that, saying that I “sided” with a stranger and was not loyal to him. Ironic, coming from someone who stepped out of our marriage first and then kept doing it until I reached full despair and distress.

In short, this woman happened to be so vindictive, honestly understandably so. She leaked his information online and “exposed” him. At the time, she had reached out to me a second time, telling me that several other women had reached out and shared that my WH was still actively pursuing and talking to women. That day was awful. He blamed me for initiating contact with her when “it was dead, I had ended it”. And as a result of blaming me for causing all of it, I found out much later that he had pursued one last woman in his anger towards me, and ultimately let himself develop feelings for her.

Writing this out makes me realize just how much can happen in less than 2 months. But I had hit rock bottom and I’m not sure if I’m getting back up at all just yet. That AP that I had contacted initially ended up, without my knowledge, filing a complaint with his job and ultimately cost him his position, as we found out a week ago.

Of course, I feel awful. My action in a moment of pure pain and distress cause a chain of events that led to an injury to his career. No matter his actions and the pain he caused me, I would never wish anything like this on him. Now he is grappling with his feelings of hurt and resentment towards me. He has now started proposing things like him pursuing a true relationship with the other AP he developed feelings for. Another slap in the face, considering he got her while actively cheating on me. He expects me to sit back and let him see if it works with her and if it doesn’t, to be ready to take him back. I don’t know how much of this is actual plans or if this is his current state of emotions.

Honestly we are definitely not ready for R. Both of us feel wildly betrayed and hurt by each other. I’m coming from a place of regret for my action that caused pain, but his betrayal towards me is also being pushed into the background and I feel like I am being discarded for a fantasy future with someone he has not even met. We are in separate states due to me just starting a graduate program (really trying to lock in in the midst of such heartbreak), but the distance might be good. I’m not really sure what type of response I am looking for here. Definitely not trying to find answers right now.I haven’t shared this with any family and have only told very little to two friends. I guess I am just looking to dip my toes in sharing on here and would love to share updates as time goes on.

If you are still here after this novel of a post, thank you for taking a moment. Any words of encouragement are much appreciated.

Wayward Perspective Only I cheated on my wife years ago and decided to tell her...

I need to share a very painful story. Sorry for the extremely long post.

I’ve been married for 4 years, and we’ve been together for 9 years. In 2019, I ended our relationship in the worst possible way (over the phone), and one month later I was running back to her, begging for forgiveness. We got back together and stayed together until yesterday.

I’ve made many mistakes in my life, and for about a year now, God has been slowly touching my heart. I’ve been reading the Bible and increasingly trying to follow Jesus’ footsteps.

I cheated on my wife before I ended our relationship, and I cheated again after we got back together, sometime between 2019 and 2020. After keeping all of this to myself for all these years, never telling even a single friend, on August 19th, one day after her birthday—which had been very emotional—the Holy Spirit troubled my heart and made me tell her.

I started by telling her that something she suspected I had cheated on her about had actually never happened. Then I told her about another situation that I had previously denied, but which actually had happened.

From that point on, everything was incredibly painful. Seeing the woman I love suffer, seeing the expressions on her face... It was unbearable. I couldn't say the rest of the truth.

At one point, she pressured me, and I had a “carpopedal spasm caused by hyperventilation during a panic/anxiety attack.” My hands cramped up and became stuck, my abdomen hurt terribly, and I finally told her the truth. I let everything that came to mind out. I told her everything.

After several days, we started trying again, and things were beginning to get better between us, except for one thing: I had forgotten to tell her about two other instances of cheating from that same period. Up until then, she had never asked me for details about the cases, and I didn't think I needed to tell her unless she asked.

The truth is that all of this happened between 2019 and 2020, and I have been faithful to our marriage ever since.

Remembering that I had failed to tell her about those two other affairs made me feel distant from God. I couldn’t pray anymore.

Last night, I picked her up from work and we came home after having a light conversation. We had already had some difficult but calm conversations throughout the day. While she was cooking for me, we smoked marijuana, and she started telling me that she had researched the panic attack I had, and that it happened because of the lie, and that she knew I was still lying to her.

Immediately, I started having another episode. It wasn’t as intense as the first one, but she noticed right away that there was something else I was hiding.

I sat down, breathed, and told her that when she had pressured me and I had that episode, I had told her everything that had come to my mind. I didn’t even stutter when answering what she asked me. But those two other affairs simply hadn’t come to mind. There had been so many things I had buried deep inside for so long...

As you can imagine, she became extremely angry with me. She said that if she had still been considering seeing other people, now she would do it without feeling guilty. She mocked everything I tried to say.

She went to the bedroom, and I stayed in the living room.

I prayed to God, asking Him for a chance to talk to her. I opened the Bible, and I happened to be at Psalm 107: “The Lord saves from all troubles.”

When I started reading the Psalm, she called me and said, “Tell me what you have to say. I’ll listen.”

I finished telling her everything, and she said, “If you’re telling the truth, then come lie down.”

I held her. Then I kissed her. She didn’t reject the kiss, but she didn’t open herself up either. Still, deep down, I felt that there was a real kiss from her on my lips.

We went to sleep, and when we woke up, she was angry with me.

She said that something had deeply disturbed her the night before, and that even though she didn’t want to, she had accepted listening to me.

She left home for work. It’s 1:30 PM now, and the last message she sent me, after I told her that it would be better if we stopped talking for now so we wouldn’t keep escalating the conflict, and that I wanted to talk to her when she got home from work, was:

I am completely broken.

I know that the pain I caused her is far greater than what I am feeling right now, but I am desperate at the thought of never having contact with the woman I love again.

I am certain that I want to stay and face this. And deep down, I feel that despite all the anger, part of her may still be considering giving me another chance.

I need advice. I need someone to listen to me. I have no one I can share this with right now, and it hurts so much.

Advice MUST include examples of your R. Not prescriptive advice. Has the affair affected your sex life time after DDay?

DDay is almost 1 year ago. R has been going for 10 months.

Tw: sexual content

I hate how it feels like I’m wearing a pleasure chastity belt when it comes to sex. Even after a year or sometime in R, I still can’t watch a movie where people are kissing or making out or even having some dumb sex scene.

Car sex triggers me the most and LMAO watching a show I anticipated forever (LANTERNS) what do you know, car sex scene. I thought I was over it and looked away.

It’s affecting me so much that … ah I haven’t told anyone or my therapist but to get off I have to imagine 2 women in my head or imagine a woman touching me. I don’t define myself as bisexual at all. It’s just heterosexual sex just makes me imagine my WH & AP and it freaking kills me. I want to enjoy myself. I want to feel great again but damn this really sucks. I really just wanted to open up and share with someone this because I feel alone in this aspect.

I tried the mirror and even seeing myself and my husband being intimate still has my mind seeing her instead. Even after it being a year from his summer fling.

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) 1 year after DDay and BP is spiraling again

We’re coming up on a year since DDay, and I’m wondering if anyone else experienced a major resurgence of pain around the one-year mark and still recovered together.

I had an emotional/text affair for about 1.5 years. There were explicit messages/photos, but no sex or kissing. My husband was understandably devastated when he found out.

The first several months were extremely hard, with periods of intense anger and despair, but over time we were genuinely doing much better. We had gotten much closer again and recently had stretches where things actually felt good and hopeful.

Then suddenly, as we’ve gotten close to the one-year anniversary, he seems almost back at the beginning. He says he hates me, that I ruined his life and humiliated him, and today he is talking seriously about separating, finding another place to live, and having me buy him out of our house. Two days ago we were okay.

I know healing isn’t linear, but this swing is terrifying. Has anyone had their BP spiral badly again around the first anniversary of DDay and then come back from it? Did you stay together? How long did the setback last, and was there anything that helped?

I’m especially hoping to hear from BPs who went through something like this and later felt differently.

Advice MUST include examples of your R. Not prescriptive advice. Escorts, cam girls, cocaine, and booze

I’ve probably posted here before I can’t remember. But last night my husband called to talk to our daughter, but he also shared with me how sorry he is and how he knows he made an error and how he wants us to get counseling with our pastor or with a therapist. This is six months after I discovered he was paying sex workers, specifically cam girls , and some local women, and then also women that are high-end escorts, but happened to live states away. I also discovered he was using cocaine and drinking much more than I had ever realized.

However, just a few hours later, he once again shared how he was feeling down after I gave birth. I was mean to him and how he couldn’t even give me a hug without me flinching. And he asked me if I wasn’t aware how mean I was to him after I had a C-section. He says his feelings matter and the feelings he had that drove him to do what he did with his sex workers and drugs, and booze are important.. I see this is all as nonsense. There’s nothing he could’ve been feeling that could push him towards using an escort. I also see this response as a deflection of taking on the full responsibility of what he did.

I had previously forgiven him for indiscretions earlier on in our three year marriage. So to see, he ramped it up and still doesn’t even see this as womanizing behavior, but at least he sees his infidelity, It’s just very crazy to me.

Weve only been married for three years and we’re in our very early 30s. My boundaries have been continuously crossed so I’ve left the home with our child as a way to protect myself

We're separated now but have only been married three years. In that time I documented:

  • A brief affair six months in, after he met a woman at a club and took her to an Airbnb (she later told me nothing physical happened and blocked him for hiding that he was married).
  • Secret NSFW social media accounts interacting with women and consuming explicit content, some active within weeks of our wedding.
  • Thousands of dollars (about 5k now ive counted) on cam girls during my postpartum time—over 30 women, FaceTimes, private interactions.
  • Heavy drinking that began within two weeks of our child's birth. I didn't grow up around alcohol and naively thought he was sick—I didn't recognize it as alcoholism until much later.
  • Cocaine use—he was dabbling in it himself, and also drove around trying to meet people to score more.
  • Looking up local escorts, driving to meet some, and taking hundreds in cash from hotel ATMs in amounts matching what local prostitutes charge.
  • Downloading Feeld, a kink dating app.
  • Parking outside strip clubs.

I want to underline the drinking and the cocaine. The heavy drinking started (again...) within a few weeks of our daughter being born—while I was recovering and caring for a newborn—and I was so unfamiliar with alcohol that I genuinely thought he was ill. The cocaine was also part of this. Because I'd never seen drug use up close, I didn't recognize what was happening in front of me until much later. I've actually been writing about that slow, dawning awareness on my blog, and its been helpful to do. This was a man who read his Bible daily and anointed our child's head with oil. I can't really reconcile that disjointed mindset.

When I found out in March, I asked for full transparency—access to everything so I could see what was going on. He gave me two cards, disliked my angry reaction, then refused to share more . He also added new passwords to his phone and to individual apps like WhatsApp and Telegram. I later found more secret accounts, some inactive, showing he'd been liking cam girl content within weeks of our marriage. There was also a woman in Latin America he'd never met but "casually" video-chatted every so often who was receiving money regularly. He knew her even longer than he's known me.

His response to all of this, for a long time, was that none of it was cheating. Every incident had an explanation. He was curious, lonely, misunderstood, communicating poorly, driving and forgetting where he was going, downloading things for work, getting cash for food and drinks. Even as of last night He still maintains that his emotions were bad and that these were his coping mechanism. Again, this is nonsense to me. He never physically touched anyone, so in his telling. When I pointed to the overall pattern, he said I was prideful and holding a false narrative. When I pointed to the deception, he said I was the one ending the marriage. Yet he said he wanted reconciliation and saw us growing old together.

I should add an update to that, though. More recently, he's started saying he does see what he did as cheating. On the surface that's the acknowledgment I begged for over months—but I can't tell whether it's real or just lip service, something he landed on once denial stopped working and he realized it might bring me back. After every incident being a "misunderstanding," a sudden reversal right as I've built my own life doesn't feel like conviction. Even last night he kept saying these were just mistakes but a mistake is buying the wrong gallon of milk. It’s not 30+ prostitutes and cocaine and alcoholism.

Then, suddenly, a young woman from his past began blackmailing him, saying she'd tell me the truth. She told me he was intimate with her while he was dating me. He said it was a lie—that she was trying to sell her body (aka...another prostitute...i think), that he was stopping her, that she's jealous he didn't want her. This is a man who was upstanding in his community, so I was shocked. But I can only imagine why she surfaced when she did. He Told me that this girl asked him for money, he declined and now she’s blackmailing him.

My therapist has helped me see that when someone consistently minimizes, denies, or reframes, the other person starts doubting their own perception of reality. I ask myself almost daily, "What if I'm wrong?" Then I look at what I've documented over three years and wonder how many "misunderstandings" it takes before it's a pattern. I feel cleared eyed now that this is NOT a misunderstanding, but he has a serious problem...behaviorial and substance addictions.

So I'll ask again: has anyone actually come through something like this (the secrecy, the paid women, the drinking, the cocaine) with a marriage that worked, genuinely restored and not just held together by denial? And if the turnaround only came after you'd already left, how did you tell real repentance apart from a man just saying what he thought would bring you home?

I should add i'm in lots of therapy, 2 group therapy , 1 individual therapist. Lots of family support. i can easily survive without him. I come from a long line of married people. There are no divorces in my community. So I just hate being in this situation.

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) Has anyone had a kink addicted partner?

I don't know where to start, I'm 4.5 months post DDay and I'm up and down the whole time. I'm 49f and him 48m is addicted to kink. He said he felt like it was a part of him that made him whole and we didn't have that in our marriage so he sought it elsewhere.

I've been up, I've been understanding, I've been down and I've seen photos of him with the dominatrix performing CBT (cock and ball torture) and I just struggle so much, he says he loves me and that was a sexual outlet that scratched a need he had I couldn't fulfil, but I don't understand it. He didn't love her, it was "just" sexual high, without sex. I don't even understand if he cheated on me or if it was something else.

I'm confused and I'm looking for people who have experienced their partner looking for non emotional sexual gratification in a pair way to give me their thoughts.

No advice, just support. Art and R and unexpected trigger - just venting, sharing

2.75 yrs post dday here in R. This Summer I got back into mixed media art and taught some library classes and a Summer camp class for kids on Artist's Trading Cards & so on... It has helped my healing a lot.

Anyhow, now that those classes were done, I had ideas of my own I wanted to explore with some summer souvenirs, so I pulled out some old "idea books" I used to sketch/make. During one of the happiest times of my life was ALSO my WH's primary 3-year affair. I didn't think of that when I pulled out the old idea books.

So I was flipping through pages of sketches, magazine art clippings, ideas, in this composition notebook, I realized the timeframe. But kept going, no problem, I got this.

Then to my shock, as I turned another page midway, I saw a journal note I'd dated & written that WH had exploded at me, screaming, yelling, throwing things, saying to me, "F*ck you, F*ck you, F*ck you you're an idiot!", and I'd written below I was stunned, that I'd asked him to lookup directions & that was his response. WH and I don't talk to each other like that.

I was so shocked, I called out, "Honey!?" and he came in and we read what I wrote together, the date. When I said the date, WH said, "That was right in the middle of 'it'". He doesn't remember it happening at all. I remember it only vaguely.

WH sat down with me. Said he felt sick. Said he was assuredly drunk, that he was drinking A LOT of hard liquor during the affair out of guilt. WH said at nights he'd tell himself he was going into work and ending it, then get to work and start 'playing the game' flirting & complimenting her all over again. WH was extremely unsettled by the journal entry, and kept saying he felt nauseous.

WH kept repeating, "So much time wasted, I wasted so much time." I'm not sure what that means. But he was clearly sick to his stomach and upset. I was as well, but not as much.

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) Infidelity realities after 10 years

My DD was in December 2016. I remember it like it was yesterday. My wife had a 16 month physical and emotional affair right under my nose. Daily texting, visits to his place, using my car to get there, lots of other painful details that really don't matter at this point.

We've been through version 1 of our reconciliation which got us through the first 10 years and are now evolving and working our way through a more mature, deliberate and thoughtful version 2. I still love her.

One thing that I've come to realize is that in order for this to work there are a lot of things I need to accept. Some of these things I had not been willing to accept and work on and is partly why version 1 only got us so far.

You cannot control your thoughts - at least not what arises. Your brain is a thought generating machine. What you can control, though, is what happens in your mind when thoughts do arise. This is reality.

I spent a lot of time ruminating about the affair and its details. It was similar to when you have a wound and you press on it to feel the pain. When I wouldn't lean into the pain it almost felt like I was betraying myself or making the affair okay in some way.

I've come to realize that in order to really move on and to really heal I need to be willing to train my mind to redirect. Those thoughts don't need follow through, there is nothing new to discover, there are no gains to be had, there is nothing productive about me torturing myself by thinking about something that brings so much pain.

The ugly details have already been worked through. I know where my wife stands and she has taken action that has created reasons for me to want to respect and admire her once again. A new type of trust has been established. I'm comfortable being vulnerable with her again.

My wife has been trying hard to help hold some of my pain along with me, not as punishment for her, but in a way that she is honoring and understanding what I feel and allowing me to feel it. This has actually helped greatly in our reconciliation #2.

Things will never be perfect, that injury will never disappear, groups of people will continue to disagree with my choice, I know I'm doing what is best for me right now and I'm learning how to be at peace with whats happened between us and in my life.

Betrayed Perspective Only Questions about couples therapy

Dday was almost 3 months ago now. New discovery about 2 weeks ago (didn’t quit his online lusting habits). WP started therapy (betterhelp) immediately and just recently switched to an in person, more specialized therapy.

There have been times I’ve thought about getting my own therapy, but go back and forth on it. I don’t want a therapist to try to convince me he’s just a sick broken person and I should have compassion. I also don’t want to be told “well forgive him or leave”. I already sit in this pain 24/7 (I even have dreams about it) and don’t want to carve out more time to spend on this shit. Im focused on it, I’m feeling it, Im working through it. I’m just not sure what therapy can do for me here. There’s no concoction of words that will make this okay, no phrases that will make the blow softer for me. I’m a broken person too. I have trauma too. I don’t go around ruining everyone else’s life over it though so as far as I’m concerned I’m not the one who needs the therapy.

Everything is already all about WP. His addictions, his habits, his therapy, his healthy activities. And from my understanding, that’s what my entire life will be if I stay. His therapy, his problems, his achievements (if he gets any) and there is no more space for me. No space for me to fall apart. I have to be the strong one because he is the weak one.

So what would be the point in couples counseling? Again, I don’t want to be told how sick he is and how I should have grace. I don’t want to be told how this isn’t about me. I don’t wanna hear about how he’s struggled for years before meeting me so it couldn’t possible be about me. While I believe it’s true that he’s dealt with this his whole life (porn addiction) I do not believe that he loved me or found ME attractive. He cannot possibly find me attractive when he likes any and everyone else. If he loved me, he never would have done any of this to me. A therapist isn’t going to convince me otherwise. All of that invalidates me and my experience anyways. What else do they offer in couples counseling if I won’t forgive or forget? How can they re-wire my brain to not hate him and to actually give him a chance? Did any of you feel as strongly about it as I do, and went to mutual therapy, and actually felt better? I’ve done therapy several different times throughout life when needed so I have a general idea of what it offers. I just don’t believe it’s going to do a single thing for me. Am I missing something? Could couples therapy be beneficial or probably not if this is my mindset?

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) I feel so shameful. I am just as bad as he is.

DDay was just over 2 weeks ago exactly.

I cannot sleep, I am torn up from the inside out.

I know what I did was cruel and NOT OKAY!!!!!

When I found out, I slapped him across the face.

When I found out more information about what he has done, i was unable to control my emotions. I have CPTSD and other mood disorders, and I could not handle the pain of what I felt so I slapped him again in a fit of blind rage and dug my nails into his shoulders.

I am now at a mental place where I am reflecting on what I have done to him too because I know, so so SO many people will say that we need to separate.

He left home to go stay with family the morning after that happened because we understood that we needed space from each other.

But now my guilt is finally being processed after wallowing in my suffering for weeks, and now I am overwhelmed with shame and regret for what I have done to him too because of the pain I felt unlike any other pain I've ever EVER experienced.

I know I need therapy.

I have had several appointments since then but have not yet discussed this with my therapist because I am just now realizing what a horrific and EVIL mistake I made by assaulting my partner who I loved with everything I had in me.

We have been together for nearly 3 years. So happily in love. I have never been a violent person, especially never with him. I found peace with him until DDay, we never fought until now.

I know what a lot of you will say, but I really needed to share this somewhere right now. It is literally keeping me up, I have been sobbing for hours about what I have done.

He is willing to forgive me, but he is scared of me now for good reason.

I told him not to come home until he feels like he is safe with me again.

I do not deserve a second chance after I have done that to him. I will live with this regret until I die.

I will be talking to my therapist and our couples therapist about the shame and disgust and horror I feel about myself and my actions.

Please know that I have called him today now that I have had some time to look inward at my actions and explained to him how sorry and shameful I feel about what I have done. He does not have to forgive me.

Please, be kind.

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) Does anyone feel very low after a good day/a good couple days?

We are 11 months post D-day. As many of us, I have good days and bad. But the further out I get from D-day and the more stable I become OVERALL, the more I am noticing a pattern:
Extremely good days (we are connecting, I feel loved, and I feel loving towards them, I can actually feel and am not just numb) are followed by my brain absolutely spiralling, remembering all the triggering memories, resenting him, wondering if this relationship is even for me, etc. Even when NOTHING triggered me.
Psychologically I can understand the brain is trying to make sense of the discrepancy, and protect me from being burned twice by someone who set me afire alive lol...but I needed some reassurance...
Am I the only one? Is this a me issue?

Advice MUST include examples of your R. Not prescriptive advice. AIO to WH breaking his detox promise?

Need help tonight. My husband cheated physically, without a condom, about two months ago with a random woman at a bar. In the weeks that followed he suspected he was borderline given his symptoms and has been seeking therapy help but finding a clinician who treats that has been difficult. So he is in therapy but they are not treating the borderline specifically. He had cheated emotionally (twice) and physically (once) before, though never full sex, and we were reconciling. Once was year 3, the other two were year 16 and 18. So big gap where we were committed and happy I thought. Now, year 20, he cheated.

I had one rule for him staying in the home: leave the kitchen as clean as it was when he got home after cheating (he'd been traveling), every night. He has kept that, though the standard slipped the last two weeks.

I had one rule for us to consider reconciliation: he had to detox the dopamine and escapism hits he was addicted to for three months. This would also coincide with the final STD test he could take to see if he was truly clean after his reckless night. So, no porn, no video games, no seeking female validation, no sports watching or fantasy leagues, no coffee, no sugar candies, no drugs. He whole-heartedly agreed, made very clear explicit vows to abide by it and that he agreed he needed it.

He has followed this so far I believe, I was understanding at a few hiccups, like a linkedin game he played then stopped, or him starting virtual spanish lessons with a pretty female tutor because he said he wanted to learn it for me so we can speak together. We've had a few rough days and tonight he randomly drops that he is doing a fantasy football draft tonight, presented as no discussion, he's doing it and informing me. My stomach dropped. He says he already committed and that these random guys (he has never met in person) matter to him and he can't leave them hanging. We had specifically discussed this group two months ago and he had said he wouldn't join it because it leads to him using it as an excuse to escape emotional work.

I told him clearly this is not okay with me and that I will view it as a betrayal of his word and commitment to the three month detox. He says that is controlling, that these are his friends and social outlet (again, he knows nothing about these people). I repeat that I get the social aspect and that I am not trying to dictate his hobbies, but that this is about him proving he can keep his word and commitment to me and our relationship after his betrayal. He was very cold and detached and said he gets why I feel that way but basically too bad. I am in shock already when he says "i've known these guys for five years, i made a commitment to them and I believe in honoring my commitments." My brain just exploded, the emotional whiplash was severe. I broke down crying, devastated that our 20 year relationship and his commitment to fidelity and his detox promise to save this marriage mattered less than some random guys on a fantasy league. I feel so devalued and shell-shocked. I cried probably as bad as when he cheated, and then felt suicidal because of the devaluation. After screaming in the shower I realized how messed up this is and that I need help. I am at the ER now because of the suicidal thoughts.

I am struggling to understand if I am over-reacting like he said or if this is a natural response to what feels like a new betrayal and devaluation? I'm asking for your thoughts and advice. Please be kind.

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) WWs Three Year Emotional Affair

My WW had a 3-year emotional affair. Once I caught her, she did a 180° turnaround and is now doing better. What I can't get over is that she was able to do this for three years; how she was able to tell him how much she loved him; how in the last year she went on to send him nudes and participate in sexual fantasies with him; how she was able to send him pictures of me and my children; and have casual conversations with the man she was cheating with. They texted daily first person she texted every morning and last person she texted every night was him she brought him into our home and life. How she was willing to risk our family for her own selfish needs. How did you get over or through the waves of anger and sadness about what the WP chose to do. How do you stop thinking about how much easier it would be to just get a divorce and be happy with someone else. She got to fall in love again, so why can't I? Why do I have to hurt so much to keep my family together, but she gets to be selfish? I know that if I didn't catch her she would still be doing it and also it probably would have became physical. I believe this because in the last few months of their affair the pictures and sexual fantasy talk had escalated quite a bit she was willing to do whatever it took to keep his attention. Telling him multiple times that her body was his to use and telling him that she wished he was there to hold her. Knowing this brings me great sadness and anger and I'm not sure what to do with it. Part of me wishes that I wouldn't have caught them until they went physical that way my decision on leaving or staying would be easier. Looking for advice for the first time in my life I don't know what to do.
