Multipoint handle replacement

Hi,
I have a multipoint lock on my wooden French door, after a party last week I found that someone snapped the handle. The lock mechanism still works and I purchased a replacement handle. The new handle has protruding screw fixings, whereas the old handle was flat. Is this normal or are you supposed to drill into the door to allow the handle to sit flush? This was an expensive handle and I’ve rechecked the description and diagram on their website and it doesn’t give any information about the protruding screw sockets! It’s an oak door so I don’t think that you can tighten the screws sufficiently to embed them into the door.
