Serious Answers Only Do you know anyone who's had a cash in hand job relatively recently- it's uncommon, right?

Upvotes

I promise I'm not asking for suspicious reasons. I know someone in her 30s who told me that she was paid under the table two years ago at a temporary job, and that they didn't check her ID ect. That surprised me, I thought that didn't happen outside of very sketchy takeaways (even then, most ask) and car washes.

Am I being naive or is this rare?

Serious Answers Only Just how stoic are we?

Upvotes

Have just been watching some Emergency 24/7.

Yes the NHS may have its faults, but how stoic are we as a nation dealing with this?

Most patients almost seemed apologetic for their plight. Very much willing to take their turn.

Any dental hygienists here? Do you like your job?

Upvotes

I'm 34f, never really knew what I wanted to do and ended up doing a design degree, bouncing around jobs after uni and am currently trapped in hospitality as a front desk agent. I'm looking for a career change with a bit more direction and better salary prospects.

I've been considering going back to education but can't really afford to do 4 years of a degree, I've heard being a hygienist can be a good role and I see some courses here and abroad can be 2/3 years for the qualification.

What's it like working day to day as a hygienist?

Any input appreciated!

Serious Answers Only Should the UK introduce a levy on SHEIN and TEMU ?

France has announced a levy targeting ultra cheap imports from companies such as SHEIN and TEMU.

What do people think? Should the UK do something similar, or would it just make things more expensive for people who are already struggling?

I can see both sides, so I'm interested to hear what people think.

What’s the best and biggest financial perk you’ve seen for a minimum wage job?

I was browsing jobs near me and I saw a job to be a cleaner at David Lloyd (only 10 hours per week) and it included a full membership (must be about £100 per month?).

I therefore wonder what other minimum wage jobs had big financial perks? People who work in hotels maybe?

If you could go back to any place and point in time, where would you go about why?

The title speaks for itself.

You can stay aslong or as little as you like and you can’t be harmed. You don’t need to know the exact date or time, you can choose an event and you’ll be able to experience it in realtime. You can only observe while you’re there.

When my wife asked me this today I was torn. My first instinct was Cretacious period to see T Rex with my own eyes. Then I decided I’d go back to the resurrection of Jesus, reason being If I saw a dude walk out of the tomb I’d accept that as there actually being a God.

My wife’s response though. Left me fucking stunned. She would go back to the 90s. A mere 30 years ago. The decade she was born in.

The opportunity to see a civilisation that is unimaginably different to our own, pissed up the wall for CD players, dial up internet, britpop and fucking woolworths.

So tell me yours, maybe I’m the odd one out.

EDIT: You also can’t manipulate the opportunity for financial gain, no going back a week for lottery numbers or anything.

Did you feel sad when you had to scrap your car?

Tomorrow, my first car is off to scrap and I can't lie, it's quite sad. I'm not sad to the point of crying because it's just a car but at the same time it's just a general feeling of sadness. I've had a lot of memories tied to the car over the past few years and it's just such a shame to see it go to the scrapyard and not get sold on to someone else.

Serious Answers Only How to deal with confrontation at the gym. Threatened afterwards?

So I guy gym few months now, and new guy joined, we have actually "worked" out together but they seem I don't know, overly serious.. their alright. Hard to explain. Anyway they have been few times they've done few undesirable things, like walk too close to me, be awkward kind things what create tension, anyway today it triggered, me I thought he said something, and its hard to see thats what they said, about me weight, or me being slow. anyway I got angry the reaction they wanted it seems, nothing happens couple people stepped in around after seeing. So I went on for bit then got my stuff, but they was waiting in the gym and I just smiled, let it pass these things happen, I just wanted to go home etc. So they followed me and then they started to explain what they said, thought I thought this etc. I genuinely thought that, at end day they just wanted confrontation, also made. threat if that happens again...in end I couldn't handle the following I asked you going let me go home, then walked back into the gym. eventually they left and I waited inside a bit then went home.

I kind of realize now back home that was fairly serious. If I report it to, I assume the gym. If they find out and then I got the whole, you got me banned. What probably fuels them.I'm going through a lot things right now, seem legal and its just added burden of angst. I could just walk away I Kind of want a change. Report them, maybe even police. Or just move on.

How acceptable is it to offer someone your coat or hoodie if they're cold?

I was at work recently and a colleague said she feeling cold. We're both in our early 20s. I offered her my hoodie as I wasn't particularly cold and she accepted, though she seemed a bit confused at first. Other colleagues have said it isn't really normal to do that unless two people are more than just friends, but that's not the case here.

I was trying to be generous and she accepted my offer with happiness. So I don't see the issue. Is this really such a rarity outside of couples?

Serious Answers Only Any advice for my 60+ year old mother who’s struggling to find work?

My mum was unfortunately subject to a case of unfair dismissal at her workplace earlier this year. An agreement was made and she received a payout because of it.

She’s now been unemployed for over 3 months and despite receiving many interviews she has been unable to land a job. She’s unfortunately not the most skilled person in the world on paper having worked in mostly admin roles throughout her career. She’s beginning to struggle financially and I really feel for her and would love to be able to offer some help and advice. Unfortunately I am not financially able to support her so anything else I could do would be great.

I worry part of the reason she is struggling to find work is because of her age. She’s been trying so hard to find a job and is applying to new roles every day. She can’t afford to retire either. She’s never struggled to find a job previously but the last time she was applying was 5 years ago and a lot has changed since then.

Any advice would be massively appreciated

Serious Answers Only Why do entertainment establishments charge so much money which reduces the amount of customers?

So this is something I’ve really been thinking about recently because I find it baffling. Let me explain. I know this doesn’t just apply to entertainment but I’m just curious.

So a bowling place near me has been offering half price slots before a certain time. Those slots have been completely booked all summer. All the full price slots? Nearly all of them are available. I’ve noticed it in other places, too. They reduce the cost, loads of people show up. Goes back to normal and it’ll be a ghost town.

Surely it would be better to charge less but have more people through your doors? Particularly when it’s something child friendly, surely the more people they get in, the more sales they make on other things like drinks/food etc?

Am I being dim and missing something obvious? Surely they’d make more money charging less to encourage more people?

Serious Answers Only How should I handle suddenly being given a lot* more people to manage?

The (large) company I work for is going through a restructure. I'm currently the direct line manager to 3 members of my team. Today I was told 4 people, all from other departments, will be transferring to my team and I will become their manager, starting today.

I understand that this is necessary and is possibly even helping secure my position, but I feel I at least deserve to be involved in the conversation. There has been zero communication or clarity on what this means for my workload. Never mind any type of remuneration. Picking up 4 new reports is time consuming so something will have to change in terms of my usual deliverables etc. I don't even know what the new people do.

I am going to speak to my manager about this, so I'm trying to decide what my approach should be.

What would you do?

Maybe I just need to put up and shut up?

Edit: The current 3 are all managers themselves and at least 1 of the new 4 is also a manager.

*I appreciate this is relative and some of you will be managing much bigger teams than this, so four extra direct reports may seem like no big deal.

Serious Answers Only Where would you move in the UK with a family of 4?

I've just returned to the UK after over 10 years in Thailand and can't get a rental for the life of me in rural South Leicestershire (applied for over 10 in the last month and not been able to secure anything) so I'm starting to consider whether it's worth looking elsewhere in the UK.

I have been considering Oakham/Stamford/Lincolnshire way.

I really want to stay in the UK but it's so difficult right now staying with family and the supply and demand in my area with kids makes it impossible to actually get a rental. Probably been the most stressful month of my life.

Two young kids. I'll earn around £50k remotely, with my wife working part-time.

Main priorities:

  • Low crime / safe
  • Good state schools
  • Lots of nature
  • Family-friendly
  • Decent things to do
  • Affordable

Serious Answers Only Advice on how to move out at 17?

hey,

I wondered if anyone had any advice on moving out at 17? I'm 16 now and just started college, but I will be 17 in April, and I say 17 for moving out because I want time to save up. I don't get much from my job a month, around 400, unless there's a half term where I can take extra shifts. But I can't mentally deal with living in this house any longer. Yeah, they might feed me and make sure I have stuff like a TV, phone, books, clothes, and a PlayStation and whatever, but it's the way I get treated. And I just can't mentally deal with it anymore, and my mental health is already bad enough. I've tried looking for student accommodation, but a lot of them you have to be 18 for, and I want to continue studying at college. Is there any advice?

When did ‘barricade’ become a thing at gigs in the UK?

I’m a millennial who spent my teens primarily at pop-punk gigs and the bit at the front was ‘the barrier’. Getting barrier was always the goal! These days I keep seeing people saying ‘barricade’. When did this happen?! Genuinely curious as to when (or If) the terminology shifted.

Did everyone else in the 90’s/2000’s call it barrier?

Youthful redditors - have you always known it as the barricade?

I need to know if this is genuine linguistic evolution or if I’ve been living under a very specific rock 😂

Serious Answers Only Is the word “bastard” still offensive - given how many kids are born outside marriage now?

Is this word still used? I remember it was a popular playground insult in the 1990s, when I was at school. At that age, we didn't really know what it meant.

Is it still used these days? Personally, I haven't heard it for a while - and given it's meaning are some kids still called this if their parents weren't/aren't married?

Answered How many "the doctors" and how many "doctor whos" have there been?

I was listening to the radio the other day (I THINK Paul Sinha's pub quiz but cant find the same bit again) and someone said a fact to the effect of "there has only been one Doctor who, the others are all "the doctor" who are playing a character in a film" as if it was cannon.

I've totally mis-remembered this fact and now cant find the fact again on any show I listen too or via internet searches, can anyone advise if they heard the same fact or know what I misheard?

(Marked as serious answers only as I really want to know!)

Thank you in advance!

Why are gyms so non-social?

The gym is maybe the one place nowadays where all ages, genders, etc etc all end up in the same place. We used to have church on Sunday for everyone where you'd see all your neighbours and ideally have a chat with them. Now that's gone and the gym seems like the one place where all different types of people from the same community will be at the same time. I think it's great young people are not going out drinking so much. But imagine how much more sense of community we would have if gyms were a bit more social. If they just did one week a quarter where there were some special activities and name tags and stuff. Then at least you can wave and say hi to people while working out. Obviously gyms as a private business have no responsibility to do stuff like that. And I get that people sometimes get to the gym and just want to put headphones in and zone out to de-stress. Or girls/women prefer to avoid interactions in case of someone creepy. But it's literally the only place left everyone in the community mixes together, and there's less interaction than a GP's waiting room, and I feel like there's so much more potential there we could unleash.
