I’m a proponent of spay aborts since I think we have so many animals that already need homes, but I feel like I always see it done on cats. Is that because it’s less risky for them than dogs? Are there more cats that are coming in pregnant? Do people view dogs and cats so differently that they would rather a pregnant dog carry the puppies to birth?

Yesterday I took her to the vet because I’ve noticed some behavioral changes in my 5yo unspayed rottie (got her from my mom who refused to spay her for whatever reason) like increased sleepiness, lack of appetite, and nonstop panting. I also noticed a bit of vaginal discharge running down her leg for the first time that morning which is the main reason I decided to take her in. I’m broke so we just started off with an ultrasound to see the urgency of the situation where they said everything seemed perfectly fine and they realized she was also lactating. It’s confirmed she’s experiencing a false pregnancy at this point but she still keeps producing a lot of discharge that’s a very milky yellowish green.
I was thinking about taking her in today again to do blood tests because I hate not knowing for sure whether she’s is life threatening danger or not but I was thinking it might just be cheaper if we just get her spayed right now instead of doing all of these tests.
My issue is that I’m not sure if I can just skip to the ovariohysterectomy part without doing further tests. Since she didn’t seem to have swelling or any issues in her uterus through the ultrasound does that mean she’s safe to be spayed? Or would I still have to run all of the tests before moving on to a spay. Unfortunately I am incredibly broke and trying to find an apartment as my lease ends soon so I’m wondering what’s the best move.

I have a 4:30 p.m. appointment for routine bloodwork, and my vet said to give my cat gabapentin the night before and 2 hours before. But since this is a late afternoon appointment, wouldn't it be better for me to give him the gabapentin at 4:30 am when I wake up for work so that the dose is given 12 hours before the appointment? Or should I do it before I go to bed? I feel like all the instructions assume I have an early morning appointment. Thanks!

Maryland USA, more of a legal question than a medical question.

I have a hungry kitten I brought in from outside. I brought her to get scanned for a microchip. A chip was found, and the vet’s office where I scanned her called the owner on the phone. I spoke to the owner and we agreed on a time and place to hand over the cat. The owner texted me to say she was running late, but then never showed up at all, and never responded to any follow up texts. I offered to reschedule the pickup, I offered to assist with the cost of the spay, and I offered to take the cat permanently if she was no longer interested. No response, and it’s been over 24 hours.

CAT INFO: 6 month old (approximate) female tortoiseshell domestic shorthair cat. I have no medical record, no vaccine history or blood test history, and I don’t even know for sure if she’s spayed. Her belly is getting slowly but noticeably larger and I am concerned she is pregnant (possibly escaped the home while in heat).

Long story short: can I take this cat to get spayed, without consent of the registered owner? The registered owner is not responding to any attempts at communication, and I would like this cat to receive medical care especially before she produces kittens. I just worry a vet will turn us away if the chip doesn’t belong to me, and I don’t know how to transfer the chip registration.

Ultimately I’m hoping to foster and re-home this kitten though a reputable rescue, as I have one cat already and would like to leave room in my home for more fosters. But I don’t know if I can get her into ANY home while the chip is registered to someone else.

I lost my most precious kitty baby four days ago,he was turning 5 in October I have been inconsolable over his loss,he was gifted to me by my parents 5 years ago when I was battling anorexia and depression and needed something to feel less alone,me and that cat were seriously attached to the hip,he would sleep with me every night sit next to me when I cried and liked being cradled like a baby,since he’s been gone I’ve felt like a part of me is gone,I can’t sleep and I can’t even look at pictures of him without crying,on the day I initially thought he was choking on a hair ball,after rushing him to the vet and after a xray and ultra sound they found fluid in his lungs he was transported to a animal hospital for surgery to drain and test the fluid but the next morning his lungs filled back up with fluid,half of his test results came back fine but bc of the fluid in his lungs (chyle) I think it was,they assumed that he most likely had a twisted lung lobe,something the vet at the hospital told me they had never seen at that hospital before and had only happened to 20 cats in the past 50 years,I was willing to go into debt for his surgery but they didn’t know if the twisted lobe was causing the fluid and if after the invasive surgery which he could’ve died from-it had a 60% chance of survival and 40% chance he could’ve died in recovery or the fluid would build back up,i decided to put him down instead of taking the risk of him dying alone during surgery or in pain :( I feel so guilty like I have done the wrong thing,it feels so cruel I don’t understand why the universe chose my cat to be one of the “rare” or “unusual “ cases for this happening,has any vet seen one of these before and the cats been okay after ? My heart is breaking knowing the possibility he could still be here but I couldn’t bare to have him in and out of surgery to suffer,he was completely fine up until that afternoon I wish cats didn’t hide pain or discomfort so well-I miss my baby I hope he forgives me and isn’t angry at me.

In desperate need of advice here. My kitty was prescribed Prozac for her anxiety, just a tiny little half pill daily. I have tried the just placing it down her throat method, crushing into food method, pill pusher method, pill pocket method, the list goes on. She will not do it. She will trash her head around until it comes out (even if she’s in a burrito), and will purposefully avoid treats that she likes because she knows that her medicine is in it. She knows when it isn’t. She’s outsmarted me and all my methods. She’s anxious, I’m anxious because she’s anxious. Please help! 🐈‍⬛

I’m looking for some veterinary perspective because we’re extremely worried and struggling to understand whether my dog could have been discharged while still in such a critical/unstable situation.

My 15-year-old Jack Russell has had chronic degenerative heart disease for several years, but his symptoms have worsened significantly over the past few months. Yesterday we had to take him to the emergency vet, where he was admitted to the ICU for congestive heart failure.

His echocardiogram/report showed:

• Thickening/degeneration of the mitral and tricuspid valve leaflets
• Severe mitral regurgitation
• Mild tricuspid regurgitation
• A linear hyperechoic structure associated with the anterior mitral leaflet, moving/prolapsing into the left atrium during systole
• Suspected rupture of a chordae tendineae
• Marked enlargement of the left-sided heart chambers
• Dilatation of the right pulmonary vein
• Reduced distensibility of the right pulmonary artery branch
• Pseudonormal transmitral diastolic filling pattern
• Chronic degenerative valvular disease

He was hospitalized in intensive care and treated with furosemide, pimobendan, oxygen and maropitant.

The vets told us that he improved clinically. Before discharge, they also showed us his chest X-rays, comparing them with the previous ones, and there was visibly less fluid in his lungs. Because of this improvement, he was discharged home.

However, since coming home only a few hours ago, his respiratory rate has remained very high.

We have counted approximately 70 breaths/min, then 60, and at one point it reached around 90 breaths/min. Some of the breaths are very fast and shallow. We called the emergency hospital again, explained exactly what was happening and gave them these respiratory rates, but we were told to keep monitoring him and wait until tomorrow.

This is what is confusing and worrying us the most. Is it possible or considered acceptable to discharge a dog after congestive heart failure while his respiratory rate is still this high? I understand that his X-rays genuinely showed less pulmonary fluid, so clearly the treatment had some effect. But can a dog still have significant pulmonary congestion or be at risk of another acute episode despite improved X-rays?

Is a resting respiratory rate of 70–100 breaths/min ever something that can be expected shortly after treatment for CHF, or would you normally consider this a reason for immediate reassessment?

I’m also trying to understand the overall severity of his cardiac disease. How significant is a suspected chordae tendineae rupture in a dog who already has severe degenerative mitral valve disease and marked left heart enlargement? Does it usually worsen the prognosis substantially?

If he can be stabilized, what kind of prognosis or life expectancy is realistically seen in dogs at this stage?

I completely understand that nobody online can diagnose him or predict his individual outcome, and we are following the treating vets’ instructions. I’m mainly trying to understand whether being told to wait until tomorrow despite these respiratory rates is something you would consider reasonable, and what this overall cardiac picture means for him.

Hello. I currently have a 10ish year old calico cat. She's been in good health all her life. Today however she started acting sluggish and lethargic and hiding under the bed which she rarely ever does. Me and my husband believe it's the weather, as we are currently in a heat wave with the head index up over 100⁰ and while we do have AC it is struggling to keep up. I currently can't afford a vet and don't qualify for care credit. Not sure what to do or if I'm just overthinking it. We are currently just leaving her be for now but we've already lost our dog earlier this year and I can't handle another loss. I'm just so worried.

Hello, I have a 2 year old domestic shorthair that is having some pooping problems. Since he was a kitten he would take a while in between taking poops (1.5 - 2 days) eventually his poop seemed harder and it started to get past the 2 day mark and I heard him let out a sad yowl while pooping so I brought him to the vet. He was put on wet and dry royal canin gastrointestinal food (I have fed him dry food in the morning and wet food at night for his entire life with me, 5 months - present) along with 1/4 tsp of miralax with each meal. It worked enough to get him down to 1.5 days between poops consistently. The suggestion was once he was down to 1 day to wean off of 1/4 and move down to 1/8 and eventually no miralax at all. He wouldn’t drop down to less than 1.5 days after about a month so I tried to move to 1/8 tsp. Well this moved it back to 2 or more days between poops. I have called the vet reception to let them know the situation and they are going to speak to the vet and let me know next with with the current advice to go back to 1/4 tsp. Basically what I’m wondering is will I have to give him MiraLAX for the rest of his life? In addition to that he also is an incredibly active cat and won’t poop unless he his played with enough, even on MiraLAX. Eventually he will poop without play but it lengthens the time between poops. I’m at a loss as in don’t have the time in the day to play with him for the length of time he would like every day, quite often surpassing two hours. He also won’t play by himself, if he’s got to poop he may do some sprints but other than that he won’t do anything to entertain himself. I’m open to suggestions about alternative play methods or suggestions about lifestyle changes. Other than his overactivity and popping problems he is a wonderful cat and I love him dearly, it saddens me to think his tummy may hurt. He is also a voracious eater, if I did not control the amount of food he eats I’m sure he would be really fat. He currently sits around 12 lbs, which vet says is perfect for him as he is a large cat.

TLDR: cat won’t poop in an appropriate amount of time unless given MiraLAX and lots of play time, wanting suggestions

Hello, today my cat threw up white foam he's a 6 month old unneutered male, it has only happened twice in the last month so I was wondering if it's something serious?

My dog, Bruiser, is 10 1/2 years old and was about 61 lbs last time he was weighed at the vet. He had a check up about 4 1/2 months ago and I mentioned he lost 9 lbs without us changing his diet or exercise. They weren't concerned at all and didnt say much about it. He also had bloodwork done then and they said it looked normal. Recently it seems like he's possibly loosing some muscle and sometimes I can see his last rib and I can feel it very easy. Should I take him back to the vet and get some more blood work done? I was going to take him in the next month or so for another checkup but I was wondering if I should take him sooner.

We recently moved to Texas, and since the move, our dog has developed a series of unexplained skin and infection issues.

It started with an eye infection that caused thick yellow discharge. Our vet prescribed an eye ointment, which seemed to clear it up. But afterwards, she began developing lesions on her back. One lesion will start to heal, but then another one will pop up somewhere else.

She has been on cephalexin for about a month and a half and got Cytopoint two weeks ago, but we haven’t seen any improvement. She has also developed an ear infection since starting treatment.

We recently found another lesion on her back that was scabbed over and appeared to be healing. I sprayed it with Gentaved topical spray, and afterward it seemed to spread and become much more inflamed. It has now has some sort of hard, plaque over it.

Our vet is completely perplexed and isn’t sure what could be causing this. She is trying to get in touch with a veterinary dermatologist and will get back to us once she hears from them. She also did a did cytology, but we haven’t gotten the results back yet. We can’t do a biopsy because she can’t go under anesthesia due to her heart condition.

We’re inclined to think this may be some type of reaction to allergies after moving to Texas, but we’re confused about why Cytopoint wouldn’t be helping? Is it a hot spot? What other testing would you recommend at this point?

Long post and I apologize in advance but would like to be as thorough as possible. We have been to 3 different vets and in contact with the breeder. No one from his litter is having anything similar happen. Breeder has been very helpful referring us to other vets and answering any questions we have.

Brought him home at 12.5 weeks 7/27, everything was good for the first 2 days. Pooped and peed within an hour of being home and everything was perfect! He took him to the vet for his initial kitten check up. I gave the vet all of his paperwork and vaccination records and help certificate. He had already gotten all of his doses of the FVCRP vaccine. I didn’t know that there was not a fourth dose so I didn’t say anything when the vet ended up giving him another dose when he had just had one the week before and did not need it. They insisted that that was not a problem, but that was kind of the start of all of his health problems following that vet visit he started having chronic diarrhea. We tried Albon dewormer but he ended up being negative for coccidia. His poop was pretty much liquid at least three times a day. He was still eating playing behaving normal, but he started to lose weight. On 8/17 he threw up (this has been the only time)

8/18 We switched vets to another vet that has more experience with ragdoll kittens and cats. She was extremely concerned that he didn’t look right, his coat was dull, he just did not look like he was thriving. He went from 2.79 to 2.7 pounds in 3 weeks. They did a bunch of bloodwork and they did an ultrasound. I’ve done countless stool samples. All of the stool samples came back negative for any parasites. I did multiple kinds, PCR, a specialized Trichomonas test, etc. all negative. When she did his ultrasound, she said that his intestinal lining looks good. His kidneys looks good, but his lymph nodes were slightly enlarged and there was a small amount of fluid present. She was not concerned about FIP due to the amount and his bloodwork. She said sometimes kittens have fluid. She ended up prescribing him a 5 day course of flagyl and the Hills and micro biome wet and dry and told us to give him food whenever he wants. He hasn’t had diarrhea since. He also went from 2.7 ->3.75 pounds since 8/18!
Flash forward to today 9/1
2 days ago he had an unsuccessful trip in the litter box. I was concerned about a blockage, but then he ended up having a full pee hours later (poop still normal). Next day everything normal. But today he has been going to the litterbox in the morning and has been unsuccessful randomly just going in and doing nothing. Meowing before so we thought he was blocked. We rushed him to the ER today and based on their quick ultrasound and their exam feeling his bladder they said he wasn’t blocked. He doesn’t have a fever but they wanted to conduct more testing. The last vet said he had fluid in his abdomen, but it wasn’t enough to think he had FIP. This vet thinks there may be more fluid than last time but it’s not significant enough to remove but they wanted to test it now for FIP. Here’s the notes from today:

Emergency exam for straining/possible urinary blockage
Physical exam and vital signs
Palpated his bladder and found it small and soft, so he was not blocked
Abdominal ultrasound
Found dilated/enlarged intestinal loops
Found abdominal fluid/effusion

Sent B12/folate testing to look for evidence of malabsorption
Sent a pancreatic profile
Collected urine by ultrasound-guided cystocentesis
Sent urinalysis/urine testing
Sent a urine culture
Gave him a sedative
Gave him an opioid/pain medication
Gave/prescribed Drontal dewormer for tapeworms, hookworms, and roundworms
Recommended repeating the Drontal dose in 2 weeks
Recommended keeping him on the Hill’s GI Biome diet
Decided not to give antibiotics because there was no current evidence of infection
Recommended monitoring him at home for vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, appetite loss, urinary straining, or worsening symptoms
Recommended follow-up with his regular vet in 7–10 days
Discussed intestinal biopsies as a possible future next step if the GI problems persist or he regresses
We’re still waiting on the testing that they sent out, but they didn’t wanna keep him. They don’t think anything is urgent they found a lot of good stuff main concerns are the inflamed bowel and fluid in abdomen.

I tried to attach any lab work I have. Are we missing anything!? I feel like there’s something underlying going on and the flagyl put a bandaid on it but the fluid is very concerning to me.

Hi all, apologies for the long post. I am 25 based in the UK I have access to a vet but worried about funds as I’ve been back and forth at the vet this past month.

My cat is a 3 years old male and a tonkinese mix, neutered, 4.56kg from 4.8kg post hospital stay.

TLDR: My cat’s nose randomly started fluctuating from bubblegum pink, he’s experiencing lethargy but eating 1 pouch wet royal canin gastrointestinal, a cup of dry royal canin digestive care, 1 pouch purina hydro life. churu treats included. not so much drinking water - two blood panels confirmed no anemia, kidney and liver functions normal.
unsure of what to do

On july 22nd miso was hospitalised for diarrhoea, a fever and lethargy. he spent three days in the hospital and was diagnosed with ileus the vets were unsure of where it came from but he wa given fluids, an abdominal scan and a whirl of medications. he was well enough to come home — his stool firmed up within a few days but he was still quiet around the house and i spoon fed him for a week until he started on his own. He was prescribed Cisaprid, Panacur and Emperid.

I took him to the vet after course of medication ended 3 days after coming home - this was just for a checkup and all vitals were good. He’d stopped drinking his water at this point too. Was told that he would likely take some time passing stool on his own and the lack of drinking water would be from having wet food only. The next week, I noticed he wasn’t passing stool at all, so went to the vet again. This was on the 4th August. He was constipated and prescribed lactulose at 1ml per day for 3 days. He was still failing to pass stool so the vet upped the dosage to 1.5ml which he was on for a week starting 7th August. Stools softened and he came off lactulose.

For two weeks he was starting to pass stool once a day, urinated normally and I started his dry food again alongside wet and a hydrocare pouch just in case as we suspected he was stealth drinking but couldn’t tell due to having multiple water bowls around the house. I noticed that on the week of August 17th his nose was beginning to have flashes of paleness instead of pink — I suspected dehydration because of the heatwave, he would be more active early hours of the day and late at night but sleep for most of the day (whilst eating). I took him to the vet 19th August and of course in the car his nose pinked up bright pink — vitals were all good and we were sent home.

On the 24th we were back at the vet as his nose had gone white a few times over the weekend and he remained sleepy during the day. Still eating — emergency vet was called and they advised to visit the clinic monday as he was still eating. Drew bloods on 24th, all came back good and we were prescribed B12 pills for the lethargy. He was with a sitter until Friday, he was doing well eating all meals and playing. Nose was pretty pink according to the sitter and videos. Blood was drawn again on the 26th to be sent off to the lab and all results came back clean. My vet was happy and said none of the expected values from the CBC or Biochemistry were out of the ordinary. (if needed I will call and ask for a copy).

Now over the weekend it seems like he has reverted. His nose is a salmon pink to pale pink most of the day, he’s toileting as normal peeing and passing stool every day. I think he’s getting tired of the royal canin wet so this evening I’ll try his regular food but he is continuing to eat the dry. Today his nose went white for a second and is now a pale pink lbut his gums seem okay.

I’m just at a loss for what to do next, he is not anemic according to the vet but he is so sleepy during the day. He started moving around a bit more today on his own but I’m still concerned. I’m losing sleep over this I’m watching him like a hawk but I don’t know how to proceed and what questions to raise with the vet next. Should I be looking for anything specific? I think I’m going to call again this evening — I spoke with them earlier about his bloods but he was looking okay then. Many thanks

My 7 year old Australian shepherd sheltie mix has oral melanoma. He had a tumor the size of a small grape on his upper lip. We had the tumor removed and they also had to remove multiple teeth. Hes healed up just fine since the surgery and is acting totally normal. Unfortunately our vet said there wasn't much else she could do other than referring us to an oncologist. We live in a rural area and the nearest one is an hour and a half drive. Further treatment is also simply out of our price range. So we really have no idea what stage hes at. Anyone have experience with this disease? Im just wondering how much time he may have left and how it might progress. Our vet did tell us she could provide pain management medicine at some point. He seems fine and totally healthy at the moment.

My dog is a 7 year old male neutered chi mix, about 10 lbs. Two weeks ago he stopped eating and developed a fever and mysterious signs of pain. After many blood tests, ultrasound, x rays, steroids and antibiotics we still do not have a diagnosis. The internal medicine doc is doing a joint tap on my dog right now, she suspects immune mediated polyarthritis. My regular vet made it sound like it was a manageable disease with good quality of life. The internal med doc made it sound like a long, drawn out relapsing disease with a fair amount of suffering. What are the vets thoughts and experiences with IMPA? TIA

Any ideas what this could be from? We're located in the east coast of Canada. Just noticed it today. She is 7 years old, 8 lbs, domestic short hair and in good health. She's an indoor cat, we moved about a month ago. We lost my older cat about 2 months ago and it's been a change for her. She's acting normal otherwise, happy and playful and eating.

To start, I do have a vet appointment and I'm just looking for a little piece of mind to calm my anxiety till then.

I have an 12ish month old kitten from a shelter. In the last two weeks or so we've started to notice that shes losing weight. I thought it was maybe the food weve been buying so we switched it up, got some pate, chunky, and shredded wet food. She eat the wet food, but she wont eat a lot, less then a spoon full at a time. Other then this, she behaves completely normal. Doesn't hide, still using the liter box, still asks for attention, still comes when its meal time, and isth lethargic at all.

The shelter said she had mild tartar, but I'm starting to think it isn't so mild.

Over the past week, my 13-year-old cat has had four episodes. They consist of her pulling her head to her chest, putting her arms over her face, and sitting there frozen for a very short period of time (under a minute). She’s sometimes contorted her body to the left side as well. Afterwards, she’s had trouble walking/with her balance, but she is always quickly back to normal.

I took her in to the vet and had bloodwork done, and it’s all come back normal. I have another appointment set up, but so far there isn’t an answer we can point to. It’s very frustrating, and I’m really scared. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I have an annual checkup for my kitties tomorrow. I currently have pet insurance, but the plan is set to renew a week from now (9/6/2026).

I'm getting paranoid that if my kitties get diagnosed with something at this appointment (on 9/2/2026), that my new policy cycle won't cover it. Is that a real risk or am I overthinking? If something comes up should I ask the vets to wait to record it in their charts ?

I’ll try to be as short and to the point as I can.

 1. We adopted a cat from a shelter at the end of January. Initially, we were told that the cat was around two years old (later, we would discover that this was not the case). She still hasn't been spayed as we were advised to wait until September, because of the medical procedures she had received.

 2. We took the cat to the vet. She was checked for all cat viruses, had ultra sounds and X rays, and all the results came back negative. All her blood work was great, but we were told that her teeth looked bad, which meant that she was much older than we had been told (nobody knows exactly how old she is). The cat had a great appetite, and the only problem was her right eye, which would water on and off. Sometimes it would be fine for days, and then it would suddenly start watering again. She was given antibiotics and eye drops, but they didn’t help much. The pattern remained the same.

 3. In late May, the cat started drooling, so we took her to the vet. The vet suggested extracting all her teeth. We agreed, and the surgery went great (three fangs were left). Everybody was happy, and all her results looked great. She remained on oral antibiotics for 10 days.

 4. In June, she started vomiting, probably because of the oral antibiotics. We took her to the vet again, where she was put on a drip, and all her blood work was still great. After a few days, she looked completely normal. We continued with Pantoprazole (for stomach acid) for three weeks and then discontinued it. Everything seemed fine.  Her appetite was great.

 5. A week ago, her eye started watering a bit more. We bought some eye drops, but they didn’t help much. Then, suddenly, one morning she refused to eat. However, when we gave her another brand of food, she ate normally. The next day, she refused that brand too. I bought a third one, and she ate well. The following day, she didn’t want that one either, so I boiled some chicken, and she ate that well.

 All this time, I thought she had somehow become spoiled, so I wasn’t particularly worried. The day after that, however, she refused the chicken as well. I bought a new brand of food; she ate a little and later threw up in the afternoon (that was on Monday).

 On Tuesday, she ate a little, then refused everything, and later in the afternoon she ate two spoonfuls of the 100th brand of food I had bought and ate a bit more late in the evening. The vomiting did not happen again.

 She comes into the kitchen, seemingly interested in food, puts her head in the fridge, meows and... nothing. She sleeps, uses the toilet, purrs, comes to me, makes biscuits, and even plays with a piece of string. Everything seems completely normal if it weren’t for the fact that she refuses to eat. Oh, yes, she may be drinking more water but not a lot more.

 I’m taking her to the vet tomorrow, but I’m at the end of my wits with worry. We love her dearly. She is the sweetest, cuddliest cat, but I am emotionally exhausted, and we are financially exhausted as well. I really don’t know what to do.

 If anyone can offer a piece of advice, share some thoughts on what this could be ( her eye problem included....oh, yes her eye seems to be watering more after eating), or suggest anything we could ask the vet to look into, we would be incredibly grateful. We just want our cuddly cat with a great appetite back.
