Men who have dated girls who grew up poor and those who grew up rich, what was the difference?

1.2k Upvotes

I have dated both and feel like I could never really fully please the rich girl, as her father had spoilt her and treated her so well. Feel like I was always being compared and especially when young / early in your career its hard to live up to that.

The poor girl on the other hand despite lacking some social etiquette (which can be taught), was always so appreciative of everything.

I guess you are a result of your upbringing, but I do wonder if dating girls that grew up rich and have been spoilt by their fathers is just a bad idea. Unless of course you are loaded going in.

What arbitrary hang-ups do you have from when you were younger in terms of what was cool/ uncool?

For example, I recently offered my bike to a friend to ride to the corner shop, but he refused, saying riding bikes was lame (don't shoot the messenger).

I guess I subconsciously think a lot of things are lame, like wearing Crocs, little fake diamond stud earrings, listening to pop music, etc. Obviously, I know there's nothing wrong with those things, and people should do whatever they want without judgment so long as it's innocent. But the subtle feeling of embarrassment is tough to shake at a personal level, because I would absolutely have the piss taken out of me for that type of thing when I was a teenager.

Do you guys have any particularly weird or niche hang-ups?

As a man, why are we so bad at supporting each other?

As a man myself, the Lindsay Clancy case has really highlighted how much women defend other women - sometimes to a fault (especially with this case).

I've noticed that men do NOT do that. In fact, it seems like we are always trying to one up each other.

We don't even have each other backs like women do. Why not? Can this be changed?

Weird Question Why does it feel like men are maturing much much more faster than women?

Upvotes

We all know the old saying, “Women mature faster than men.” But with social media, I’m starting to question how true that actually is.

The more I scroll, the more emotionally immature behavior I see from grown women, especially when it comes to relationships. Finding someone who can communicate clearly, take accountability, and handle disagreements maturely sometimes feels surprisingly rare.

Obviously immature men exist too, but where did the idea that women naturally mature faster even come from?

How have you guys handled trust issues after a partner brings up old incidents repeatedly?

I’m curious about other men’s experiences with something I’ve been dealing with in my relationship.
My girlfriend and I have had several conversations about certain situations from the past that affected her trust in me. One of them happened almost two years ago, when I was playing chess with some of her friends and she felt left out. Another was at a conference, where a girl was speaking very quietly to me, so I leaned closer to hear her and laughed awkwardly because I was confused about what she was saying. My girlfriend interpreted the interaction negatively and it affected her trust in me. I apologized for it multiple times and have genuinely tried to be more conscious of how I interact with other women.
More recently, we were talking and I mentioned that I’d spoken to her brother before. She told me that she doesn’t want members of her family involved in our relationship.
For context, the only interactions I’ve had with her family have been pretty limited: I briefly spoke to her father when we were involved in an accident, contacted her sister once because I couldn’t reach my girlfriend during an argument and was worried something had happened to her, and spoke with her brother once. None of these were intended to involve her family in our relationship.
The part I’m interested in hearing other men’s experiences about is how you handled situations where your partner’s trust was affected by past incidents, especially when those incidents continued to come up long after you had apologized and tried to change your behavior.
I’m not looking for people to diagnose my girlfriend or tell me whether I should stay or leave. I’m more interested in hearing from men who have experienced something similar:
Have you had old mistakes repeatedly brought up after you apologized and changed your behavior?
How did you distinguish between respecting your partner’s boundaries and feeling like you were constantly being judged for your past?
Have you ever had disagreements about interacting with your partner’s friends or family? How did that work out?
What did rebuilding trust actually look like in your experience?
I’d especially appreciate experiences from guys who were genuinely trying to improve their behavior rather than just trying to prove that they were “right.”

Men, if you were diagnosed with a neurodivergent condition later in life, or have come to suspect that you’re neurodivergent, what first made you think that something might be different about the way you process or experience the world?

🛑 Answers From Men Only 🛑 I grew up poor, I’m now in a good place, but friends make fun of things I do, say or think in reference to that. How to respond to that?

I grew up extremely poor. As I got older, I worked hard, saved a significant amount of money, built a good career, and eventually became financially independent at a young age. I lived with my mom until I was 29… not because I couldn’t afford to move out, but because I was able to save money while also helping her at home. I’ve been independent and responsible from a very young age because I had to be, and now, at 30, I’m fortunate to have a very comfortable life that I worked hard to build.

Despite that, I have close friends who make small, snide comments about me, my lifestyle, and especially my upbringing.

Things like:

“You dress like you shop at Ross.”
“You have an older iPhone.”
“You’re on your poor shit.”
“You don’t know anything.”
“Mom make you a sandwich?”

Obviously, some of these comments are tied to the fact that I grew up poor and lived with my mom for a long time. I’ve usually said nothing and just let them slide, but lately they’ve started to bother me more and more. From my perspective, I’m actually in a very strong financial position. I make more money than some of these friends, have more savings, have zero debt, and live a very comfortable life. I’ve never felt the need to flaunt any of that, so I don’t understand why they continue to make comments that portray me as some broke or dependent person.

And this isn’t necessarily a recent thing. Looking back, I think I’ve probably been in a better financial position than some of them for a long time; I just don’t advertise it or make my finances part of my personality.

I’m not ashamed of where I came from at all. If anything, I’m proud of how far I’ve come. But I’m starting to realize that I don’t want to keep silently accepting comments that make my upbringing or the sacrifices I made into a punchline.

How can I stand up for myself and set a boundary without coming across as overly sensitive or turning it into a competition about who has more money?

How do I human? How to get over someone that could have been?

I’ve been pining recently over a girl and the relationship that could have been. I always liked her and it all started at a party when she came up to me and started talking. We have always been friendly but this was different. Her friends told me later she liked me and that’s when I thought something would happen. But every night out after that nothing did happen. It was close and it was like we were both waiting but nothing came. Maybe I was too scared or maybe she didn’t push but when we were together nothing came. I asked her to the end of school balland we went and had a blast, but now that schools over it’s like I’m empty and waiting for what could have been. I spent so much time thinking about something that could have happened. So many mixed signals and messages and I just keep wondering what could have happened and what I could have done differently. I put her on a pedestal I can’t take her down from. By the time the ball came we both just knew that it was as friends even tho it was never said. And I accepted that even though really I wish I just did something more.

I am wanting to surprise my husband with a chainsaw soon. Can you guys help recommend which ones you think are good quality please?

He currently already has a mini chainsaw and he's been talking about how much a really needs a regular size chainsaw for a couple years now. I'd like to just surprise him with one. I feel like he won't get around to getting one soon cause it's not completely a need right now. So I'm going to use some money I've saved up to get one for him.

I've got $300 max to work with for this. I know he likes the brand Milwaukee a lot. But I know he wants gas powered. One of the giant Blue Spruce trees in our yard is dying and he's been talking about how much it would cost to have it chopped down and that he would prefer to just do it himself if he has the right chainsaw for the job. If you have any questions for me, I'll do my best to have answers. Thanks guys!

Turning 21 soon - how would you approach alcohol?

Mom is a horrid alcoholic and addict, and I don’t know my dad but I imagine he is/was a drunk to some extent to. For that reason all thru college I’ve never touched alcohol or any other drugs. I’m turning 21 soon and want to have a nice fire with some buddies. Growing up in Wisco I’ve been around it my whole life, it’s just what you do after work every day lol. I know responsible guys that won’t let me go too far, and I don’t even want to get drunk. It’s a social thing. But is it wise to even try? I hear a lot of recovering alcoholics say it started as an occasional thing and slowly got worse before they realized. idk. Let me know what you boys think

What's the best tech investment you've done in recent times?

For me it has been the robot vacuum. I absolutely enjoy not having to clean up after myself. That thing is automated to clean up my messes. Other notable purchases all live on my desktop. I think these smart lights are pretty good, the automations are pretty neat. I have even gotten myself involved in signing up for robot companions on desk or are they really just desk pets? And then another monitor that moves with the help of robotic arm so that I don't haave to actually drag the screen back towards me.

Backstory, I used to lay down on floor with my laptop placed sideways on the floor. Its one of those things where I was just too tired to lean towards the desk. I've been laying weird for a while, some reels even made me believe that I have adult adhd for laying around at odd angles.Anyways, I feel this will be a good purchase idk. Still undecided. But what about you? Even limiting to 2026, what has been your best tech buy so far?
