Currently a FSE for an OEM. Is the grass usually greener as a BMET?

Lab analyzer company. My coworkers are all quitting and are not being backfilled. My territory has grown from 4 to 8 states and I offer partial coverage for 3 more. Used to be 40% travel, now it's 100% and sometimes I have to travel on Sundays. We're out of stock on nearly every critical replacement part, my customers are understandably getting really pissed at me, and I just don't want to deal anymore.

I love fixing equipment, but I need a break from the crazy amount of travel and constantly getting hounded by lab managers. Even if we put out applications for new engineers now, it's going to be until at least next spring for them to be trained and working independently. I was planning on quitting before next summer so I don't have to deal with any of these crazy annual summer cases again, but I don't know if I can make it that long.

Question USAF BMET 4A231

Just found out today I’m shipping to BMT in 2 weeks with AFSC 4A231. It was my number 2 job so I’m excited but also nervous because I don’t want to have to depend on others to help me if there’s an issue I can’t solve. Does anyone have any advice for me? Were you always good at solving issues related to this subject or did the technical school help you really get an understanding? I’m M 25 working construction and have a basic understanding of electronics and circuitry

How are Biomed departments using AI?

Are any Biomed departments currently using AI tools to enhance their day-to-day practice beyond streamlining emails and improving written communication? If not, how do you envision AI being used to support or improve daily workflows in the future?

Our department is developing AI agents to assist with enterprise and internal document retrieval and process-related tasks (i.e. it's helpful to have an AI agent that can answer questions using only approved department documentation as its source). Nothing major but it looks promising so far.

OBIX BeCA wireless transducer not charging

The TOCO won't go to a full charge. No change in any of the charging ports. The US ones charge just fine. Let the toco die and recharge, but didnt get itself dialed back in. Id say the battery needs changed, but its IPX8 and it's sealed up tight.

Anyone have similar issue, before i have to mail this thing in?

Discussion Philips going union?

Philips seems to have a lot of districts considering union after they’re pushing AI dual facing cameras in the fleet vehicles without any input from the FSE’s. For those working as FSE’s across the different companies, what should we be looking out for in terms of unions and/or Philips?

Request Internship/Shadowing/Volunteer Opportunities

Hi everybody!

I am currently a senior (c/o ‘27) biomedical engineering student in AZ. I am going down the biomedical devices track, which includes the BMET, clinical engineering, R&D, and pre-med routes. I’m interested in BMET and clinical engineering, and I really would like to get ahead of my peers by graduating with some experience, whether it be paid or unpaid.

I would greatly appreciate any advice anybody might have on how I should move forward with finding these opportunities. I feel like AZ is a bit saturated and in low-demand for these positions, especially for an undergrad student.

Any advice helps, thank you!!

Discussion I’m trying to go down the BMET path in 2026 and am looking forward to any advice/criticism.

Hello to whoever may see this, I’m currently a 21 year old male living in NYC who for most of my life, have had interests in things like programming, cybersecurity - tech in general. I know that nowadays the job market isn’t what it was compared to the job market of the past and so this is why I’ve decided to shift to healthcare. I’ve been doing quite the number of research on my options for BMET and I just want to start by saying, I’ve seen people say that BMET is good, stable, but that it won’t make you rich and things of that nature which I’m completely okay with. I just want something that’s hands-on now, technical, and still keeps me thinking I’m doing something in tech somehow. My goal right now is to find some sort of online college to study theory, while securing some sort of facility for labs and whatnot but I’m waiting to hear back. I’ve looked into CBET.edu but it may not be something I can do right now though I kind of want to? For the meantime I’m waiting to hear back and even applied to Apple’s Technical Specialist role out here in NY. I’m doing this in hopes of maybe doing TS -> Expert -> Genius within Apple. This is because I would be able to apply to apprenticeships for BMET without having a degree with at least 6 months of prior experience in IT/Electronics (GE and some other employers I think). I like the money that seems to come from this path since I like to believe I’m a minimalist and don’t really require much. If I manage to complete my AAS (If I’m lucky enough to find a school, was looking into City Tech but they don’t have an AAS program only a Health Informatics BS but I’m not necessarily looking for that now.) I’m going to then go for a BS in HTM and see what awaits me from there on. Is there anyone currently in BMET or working towards BMET that is in a better position that can give me the advice or info I need to hear? Thanks a lot and I’d definitely appreciate any advice/criticism.

Question IntelliVue MX750 – No waveforms with X3 module and rack

Hi everyone,

I’m troubleshooting a Philips IntelliVue MX750 that does not display any waveforms when connected to a rack with an X3 module.

Here’s what I’ve checked so far:

The monitor powers the X3 module normally, but no waveforms are displayed.
The same rack + X3 setup works correctly with another MX750.
I tested the problematic monitor with different racks and different MSL cables, with the same result.
This seems to point to an issue specific to the monitor rather than the rack, X3, or MSL cable.

Has anyone encountered this issue before on an IntelliVue MX750?

What components or connections would you recommend checking next? Any troubleshooting steps or service experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Question Moving to SoCal next year

Hello all.

This is a slightly different post compared to most of the "break into biomed" on the sub recently.

I am a Tech 2 with 5+ years of full-time general biomed service across 2 hospitals. Half my time in southern Texas and for the last 2 years or so my wife and I have been in North Carolina. The move hasn't turned out to be what we wanted and we will be moving to Southern California in mid-February to be closer to family and start a family of our own.

I wanted to gauge the job market for experienced technicians and begin making connections if anyone had any info on possible upcoming openings.

I love this field and everything that makes it unique.

Thank you.

Question I need help

I have a BS in physics. Got an MS a year ago in BME. I have no work experience other than customer service. I have been applying for BME entry level jobs even technician roles for a year and can’t even land one interview. I live in Dearborn Michigan.
I’m thinking of changing careers. What would you advise me.

Question Managers, how many biomedical FTE's work at your site, and what are your training and tool budgets? Same question for the imaging side. I'm curious if there is a common amount for those items.

Discussion One of the worse jobs I've had so far. Decommissioned doesn't mean you can demolish the ceiling without protecting anything. Everything was coated with a very thick dust layer and a ton of debris under everything.
