It is not uncommon for new dancers to drop off after their first few classes because of fatigue and knee pain. Often with the conclusion they are "just too old" because of the wear on joints and muscle. And while that may be true for some, there's often a mechanical explanation that gets overlooked and it starts in your sole.

Veterans may know but for the new faces in the room, when you turn, a high-grip sole holds your foot while the rest of you keeps rotating. The foot ends up turning more slowly than the knee above it and the knee spends that moment twisted relative to the foot. That puts the joint under a rotational load and your scaffolding feeling that are the muscles, tendons, ligaments, menisci and joint capsules around the knee. One turn is nothing and likely won't register. A few hundred a night and especially several nights a week and those tissues are absorbing something repeatedly that they aren't especially built for.

The same knee problems turn up time and time again with dancers - meniscus tears, patellofemoral pain (the ache around and under the kneecap), and patellar tendonitis. While several factors drive those problems, footwear is one variable that always plays a part and it also happens to be an input you can change this week.

Showing up to class in running shoes are the most common culprit because it is the footwear almost all of us already own. They're built for forward motion with a lot of traction which is the exactly the wrong specification for a dance floor. Everything that makes them good for running a 10k becomes hostile the second you need to pivot. What you want is a sole that releases in one place and holds everywhere else. Turn a purpose-built dance shoe over and you'll see a smooth low-friction zone under the ball of the foot and ideally a second under the heel with ordinary tread around them. The rotation happens at the point of contact with the floor instead of inside the joint. Uniform tread across the whole sole such as your gym shoes and most fashion sneakers have leaves that turn nowhere to go.

Weight is the other thing worth knowing. Purpose-built dance shoes tend to land in the 6 to 9oz range per shoe while plenty of general athletic trainers sit at 10oz and above. Sounds trivial until you count the steps. You're lifting each shoe thousands of times a session and even 100g compounds across all of them. It won't register in hour one. Maybe in hour two. But most probably in hour three when technique starts going lazy before conditioning has actually given out. And this is when those in the wrong footwear are most at risk for tweaking something. Note that followers likely feel this more than leads purely on turn volume.

Same logic covers lower back and hips, incidentally. Unsupportive shoe and altered alignment means body compensating up the chain. All the micro adjustments reacting and compensating in overdrive. But perhaps that is another entire post...

Necessary caveat: this is mechanics, not medicine. Footwear is a load variable - definitely not a treatment. If your knee hurts at rest or it's swollen or it's been going for weeks, that's a physio conversation rather than a shopping one. A good teacher will also catch a turn that's loading your knee badly faster than any outsole will. And if they aren't looking for it, do ask.

Has anyone tried ballet specifically to improve their bachata?

I’ve been dancing bachata for a while, but I still struggle with stiffness, especially in my shoulders/arms and upper body. I’m also trying to improve my balance, turns, posture, body control, and overall fluidity.

I’m considering taking beginner ballet classes alongside bachata for 6–12 months. For anyone who’s done both, did you notice ballet carrying over into your bachata? What improved, and was there anything ballet didn’t help with?

Hey everyone, just wondering — when did Bachata actually start being fun for you?

I've been dancing for about 9 months now, and honestly at a pretty high volume. I go to class 4x a week and hit socials 3x a week on top of that. I'm doing online courses, practicing isolations, body waves, hip movement, all of it, at home too.

And yet... I still can't pull anything off at socials. I'm nowhere near being able to dance through a full song. It's way more stumbling than dancing, and honestly it just feels awful. I know Bachata takes a long time to learn, but I feel like I'm running out of steam here. It's genuinely draining putting this much time and money into a hobby that brings zero joy and mostly just stresses me out.

So — what do you think? Should I quit? Or grit my teeth, push through another few months (or years), maybe get private lessons? I can't shake the feeling that I'm just not very talented at this and that I need way longer than most people. At the same time, I have this feeling that I would love dancing if I could actually do it — but at my current level it's just not enjoyable at all. Maybe that feeling is misleading me though, and I'll just sink even more time in only to realize years from now it was all for nothing.

I know 9 months isn't long in Bachata terms. But investing this much time, almost daily, for 9 months straight into something that isn't just "not fun" but actively draining — that starts to feel unbearably long.

My instructor mainly taught us fusion and Moderna, and extremely limited sensual moves. The more I dance in socials and especially the slow parts or even the slower songs and in intros, I’m finding difficulty with closed position sensual moves (mostly because I haven’t really learnt any combo except 1 or 2). (Whenever I get stuck I resort to just doing a caresia and head roll for me and my partner).
The only one I know is side wave going into a head roll then cambre going up and then dip.
Are there any resources I could look into which I could learn a couple of more closed sensual combos/moves? Any video on YouTube would help as well. I’m mainly trying to get more familiarized with these moves and comfortable with them as well

Hey everyone, I’m looking to begin learning bachata, but I’m in a bit of a predicament. Well I haven’t even started yet, so I know the best thing is to first do that, however, i am very limited on options for partner work. I travel my country (Ireland) for work, so I am staying in an Airbnb from monday-thursday, and home Friday-Sunday, the location I stay at during the week typically changes weekly, and it is rarely in a city, so I can’t attend classes during the week. When I am home, (near belfast) their is only 1 class I found that is on all weekend, it is on Friday evening, and it is bachata sensual. So my idea was to practice solo, I seen bachata dance academy have a solo course, I would practice 45-60 minutes 3-4x per week, and then attend the sensual class on Friday. it is my only current option, so I will give it a go, but I’m wondering how good it is especially when I’ll be a novice only learning the basics, but doing sensual right away. What is the carryover like? Will the progress be slow because I can’t attend a typical bachata class to practice the basics? any advices is appreciated

For example shoulder shimmies etc, I haven't found some quality material on YT.

So ive been dancing and attending classes for three years, perhaps over 400 hours of classes and around 30 private classes. And although I have a lot of complex combinations and im very good at certain things, but there is a saying, a chain is only as good as its weakest link, I have this issue right now. I need to clean my fundamentals to truly flow with the dance and match my skills in one area with the others.

I am really interested in the fundamentals, the breathing, keeping the frame all together, etc. The timing, controlling the velocity, breathing, you name it. I do record myself regularly and sometimes I do get feedback from trusted followers that may know things I dont.

What online courses are the most useful to complete me as a dancer? I am not looking for simple combinations of course, but rather getting the fundamentals right.

I’ve danced a lot in both Europe and US, and without a doubt generally the level in Europe is much higher than in US. We all know that, but we don’t know why. Is it the lead to follow ratio? That’s the main thing I can think of. In Europe it usually seems about even, and in US there are always extra 15-40 men standing around. It’s so rare to see a lead rejected for a dance in Europe, while in US it’s normalized and happens all the time. Perhaps there’s a completely different reason? What do you guys think?

As a lead, sometimes when you make eye contact with a follow and start walking towards them, it is somewhat obvious to the follow that you're gonna ask them to dance, but you run into a friend on the way there and the friend asks if you wanna dance. In this situation, do you tell the friend that you're gonna ask someone else, or do you go with the friend because the other invitation is "unconfirmed"? Just wanted to hear some opinions from the follows. Gracias!

I’m Caribbean and from Boston and I’m planning a trip to Arizona to explore if I’d move there.

How does the Arizona compare to the Boston scene?

In Boston we are blessed and can dance every single night with very large diverse crowds. All ages, races, dance levels, and dance styles (traditional and sensusal).

From my research I’m getting the vibe that Arizona has a lot smaller dance scene, less people and everything is a lot farther away.

I also get the sense that since there is not a huge Caribbean community in Arizona that Traditional bachata will be less popular.

Also seems less diverse culturally.

What do yall think? Are my observations correct? What do you think overall about the Arizona scenes? Do different cities in Arizona have distinct scenes?

Soo I just wanted to ask if anybody can help me name the song in the bachata song in this audio clip? I only have this tiny recording but find it impossible to get Shazam to understand it. I speak Spanish so I've tried searching for the few words I can pick up but no luck.

I am a pretty bad Bachata dancer coming from Salsa. To fix that, I need to work on my technique, but besides that, I should also start to go out and just dance more to get some practice.

Here's the thing, for Salsa I dance with everyone and I am quite comfortable, but for Bachata, I usually only dance with people I know. One reason is because I am shit at it, the other is because I don't know what the follows are okay with. Like, among my acquaintances, they mostly trust me and I know which one is okay with shadow position and which one isn't.

But how do you do that with strangers? How do you know if they appreciate closed position and shadow position and what not?

Does anyone have recommendations for apps or websites or tools to separate a song into different instruments so I can practise dancing to different instruments separately? Thank you

Hello Bachata dancers. I am looking for a bachata style that is less focused on exaggerated "sensual" movements. Understandably, everything I see online is performances, but I've read that in countries where bachata has deep roots like the Dominican Republic its more about finding a groove between the partners, less about cool looking "sexy" moves. Is this a legitimate style that is found in the US? Is there a name for it?
Note: I like the big sensual moves, they look cool, but it's not my vibe.

For context: I have danced Argentine tango for about 8 years. I really found my voice when I stopped worrying about how many flashy steps I knew and just found the space to be slow and pause, let the dance breathe. Again - complex flashy steps are cool and take a lot of talent, I respect it, but it's not my pursuit.

I imagine a lot of dancers attended the festival; what did you think of it?

Personally, I liked the large crowd and the chance to dance with so many different people; there was plenty of room to dance despite the number of attendees.

As for the classes, having a giant screen was great—it meant you could follow along from anywhere in the room—though you did have to fight for a spot to see the actual demo. The only workshops I really enjoyed were Gero and Migle’s; they were explained very well.

I’m not sure if I’ll go back, though, since the festival—combined with flights and a hotel—isn't cheap.

It seemed like a lot of people just stood on the sidelines watching others dance or waiting to be asked; that always surprises me, because I’m the type who dances non-stop (as a lead), especially considering the total cost.

What was your experience like? Will you be going back?

Today I went to a salsa/bachata party, being a "veteran" of two months of bachata and a quick 15 minute workshop teaching me the salsa basic step.

Why did nobody warn me this would be so fun? It's just walking around and dancing with strangers. When salsa songs came on, women would teach me some moves. When it was time for bachata, I could impress ladies with my bottom of the barrel beginner moves and explain what they should do when some of my invitations confused them. It was a grand old time, even if I was unable to convert it to any long term connections.

Seriously, it feels like these Latin parties are what clubs should be: just dancing with strangers, laughing, getting along and either exchanging contact info or just moving on to the next dance.

My only regret is not doing this 10 years ago.

Hi all, I've been dancing bachata for a bit over a year and would say I'm maybe an intermediate level.

Some socials it feels like some leads are actively avoiding me and I spend half the social waiting on the side.

I know I can ask people myself, and I sometimes do, but I feel like I'm imposing a dance upon them and they don't actually want to dance with me.

Finding this really frustrating and just feeling like I must be a terrible dancer or something.

Anyone else had this experience as well?
And does it ever get better? It's a shame because I absolutely love dancing, but whenever I have a bad social experience I just feel so miserable.

Yesterday was my first bachata class, and I had a great time! Of course, I’d love to improve haha. The video shows most of the choreography that I can remember, which is why I’m dancing so slowly. I’d really appreciate any advice or tips on how I can practice and improve at home. I’d be super grateful!

How do I know what moves to do before? I keep thinking too much to the point where I freeze up. Is this normal for a beginner to feel or is it just me.
