Claraplatz

Why is dealing in claraplatz tolerated? I'm super sure the police is not stupid and they know. Specially because you get offered things at any time in the morning, afternoon or night in the middle of the street and with zero pretending they are not dealing.

Am I missing something?

Familieunfründlechi Arbeitswält

I muess bitz Dampf abloh.

For english speakers: I need to vent. I'm a trained lab technician and want to come back to a lab job after maternity leave, with about 60%. But the job market is bone dry on part-time lab jobs. F*cking family unfriendly, there are only 100% jobs. Plenty of those, though.

Am I the only one experiencing this?

Or does anyone have a good idea where I could look, aside from Googles 1st page job portals?

Edit: I sent the pictures to Uber Eats and they sent me all my money back. If anyone else has the same situation I would suggest they also do so.

My wife just gave birth and some friends sent us Uber Eats gift cards. I don't normally use Uber Eats, or any food delivery, so this was a first time experience.

The issue can be construed as my fault as I didn't read the reviews, but IMO this is so beyond "bad reviews" it's false advertising, scummy business and just plain unethical. We chucked the food.

If you're the owner of this establishment, I'm 99% sure you're a fraudster but if this is an actual attempt, seriously consider getting training or switching careers.

Behold, the pictures (the AI generated one is obviously not what we got, but is what was advertised)

And yes, the "sashimi bowl" is smoked salmon (smelled rank), and the avo arrived like that.

67chf down the drain.

What are your preferred /favourite grocery shops and what do you buy there?

Hello all! I’m asking for your preferred/favourite grocery shops and what are things that you only buy specifically there? Incredibly curious to hear what you have to say and they can also be in Germany or France!

Any German speaker could help me with a phone call? English or spanish as the lenguage to translate 🙏

Grüezi!

I live in a small town near Basel (Solothurn/Baselland border) and need some help with a short phone call to the RAV (unemployment office).

They insist it has to be in German, which I don't speak yet. It would only take about 10-15 minutes, ideally today or tomorrow.

Would any Spanish, English or German speaker be willing to help me out? Happy to pay for your time, just let me know what's fair.

Thank you so much!

Two electric bikes stolen within 2 months in Basel (St. Johann, 4056) is this common? What should I do?

Hello Everyone,

I live in St. Johann, Basel 4056, and I’ve now had two e-bikes stolen within two months.

Both were parked in front of my house and locked with ABUS locks. The thieves broke the locks and took them.
After the first theft I reported it to the police, but nobody came to check the place and I never got any update.

Now my second bike was stolen again just a few hours ago. I’m honestly frustrated and don’t know what else to do.
Is this really so common in Basel?

Hello, a few parts of my vintage speakers need replacement/repair. Since the speakers are large and difficult to transport, I need to have a technician come to my home. Do you know anyone who handles this type of work? Thanks!

Moving to Basel long term (EU-Non EU couple)

Hi everyone! We’re a married UK-Italian couple in our mid-30s, and we’re considering moving to Basel around beginning 2028, depending of course on job opportunities. From what we’ve seen and experienced so far, Basel/Switzerland seems to align much more closely with the lifestyle and values we’re looking for than the UK at this point in our lives. Since we have time before a potential move, I’d like to use the next years to prepare properly rather than suddenly trying to figure everything out when the time comes.
I’d really appreciate advice from people who have made a similar move, particularly on the main things we should start learning or researching now. For example:
• Language: Would you recommend focusing on Standard German first and then getting familiar with Swiss German, or approaching it differently?
• Bureaucracy/admin: What should we understand in advance about residency, permits, health insurance, taxes, renting, banking, etc.? I’m Italian and my partner is British, so I realise our situations regarding permits may be different.
• Integration/lifestyle: Is there anything about living in Basel or Switzerland that you wish you had known a couple of years before moving?
I also have a more niche career question. I currently work in academia as a lecturer in Life Sciences at a UK university, but if we move to Basel, I would be interested in transitioning out of academia and into the local life-sciences/pharma/biotech job market. If anyone has made a similar transition from a UK academic position into industry in Basel, I’d be particularly interested in hearing about your experience, what kinds of roles you moved into, and anything I could do over the next couple of years to make myself a stronger candidate.
My partner is a software developer, so we’re also interested in hearing about the tech/software job market in Basel and the surrounding area.
Basically, we have around two years to prepare and would love to make good use of that time. Any advice, resources, experiences, or things you think prospective newcomers commonly overlook would be very welcome. Thank you!

Most Quintessential Basel Restaurant

What's your pick for the most quintessential restaurant in Basel?

While I want some basic standards of food quality and service, I am more interested in the kind of restaurant that has been around forever, that not only you've been to, but that your parents have been to, and even your great grandparents.

The kind of place that everybody in town knows about, most have been there at least once, and everyone has an opinion about.

This is probably a long shot but would there be enough interested to create a NFL fantasy football league (ideally Dynasty) with a small cash prize in Basel and surroundings?

Authentic Swiss art?

Hi! I am planning to visit Basel around Christmas and I was wondering if there are any good recommendations as to where to shop for some wall art to take home?

I am specifically interested in oil or watercolor paintings, or charcoal drawings. Preferably nothing too expensive but something I can remember my trip to Switzerland with.

How much time do I need at Basel airport?

I’m flying to London from Basel on Sunday evening (30th) - we’ve got hold luggage to check in and obviously we’ll need to clear security/passport control/EES.

We’ll be coming from Freiburg so our options for transport to the airport are a bus that gets there three and a half hours before our flight, or one that arrives exactly two hours before our flight. The first one seems way too early, but is two hours enough? I don’t know how busy it’s likely to be on a Sunday evening, but I’ve heard clearing EES can take a really long time. I checked with the airline and it looks like bag drop doesn’t open until two hours before the flight, so I’m assuming getting there three and a half hours before would be overkill, but is there anything I’ve not factored in here, like infamously heavy traffic on Sundays or it just being really busy at the airport in general at the moment?

Thanks!

Looking for language tandem (Russian-German)

Hellouu

I would like to learn Russian, I speak high German as my mother tongue.

Would anyone be interested in learning together/ from each other?

Or otherwise, does anyone have suggestions on how to find a language tandem partner?

I figured maybe via the university, however I am 35, my student days are done and over, so not sure if that would be the right place for to look..

Thanks for your help :)

I'm looking for a good gym place around Universitätsspital (max 15 min walking distance).

I've seen Forum Fitness which seem amazing but I'm open to recommendations. a pilate studio could also work.

Bonus point if they do fitness classes in English :)
