New Player Help
New player about to start the game. Vet of Subnautica, Planet Crafter, Medieval Dynasty, and a whole lot of 4x, strategy, and building games from Civ 1 (yes, 1) to present.
What do I need to know to play this game?

Make sure your hired villagers have their 'Hold ground' selection off... they will run and hide from danger. Unless you have really good fighters of course
Research, research, research... never stop if you can help it. You also don't need to research every weapon or armor so don't think you do
Food is the single most important thing I your village or outpost. If the villagers get hungry they stop everything to go find food.
Early on get ready for winter by collecting lots of mushrooms and berries for the 2+ days of winter. Cant harvest anything during the winter.
Save every seed from the beginning of time....you will need them
Build extra storage facilities and make the stockpile and barn a priority to research
Be patient, its not a race. Going slow has no penalty
Hire villagers to do the task....you are supposed to plan your village, do quest(sometimes with an army) and explore... not build everything, farm, feed animals, etc. Let the peasants do that
Don't be a snob to hiring beggars early on.... they can do small task like delivery or harvest berries
Don't play with mods... learn the game, it's designed to progress you through the game with the research side of things.... oh need more storage for your villagers, research a bag... need a logger to hold more logs, research a log sling....
Have fun

3R: Always be reading (skill books), always be researching (tech tree), always be ready (keep your food gauges topped up and arrow quiver full).
combat is significantly easier as an archer, you’re able to kite enemies with an arrow to the face.

Mistakes i made: Didn't recruit enough people to avoid my having to do busy work Took on 1 v 3+ fights alone with garbage gear Tried to liberate too early, the brigands are strong so you need decent equipment on every fighter and you need to have more fighters than they do. Your team can't 1v1 them in the beginning but once you swarm them it is way easier. I lost everyone in an 8v8 my first attempt, lost 2 in a 16v8 on next attempt. Didn't set outposts up properly to make their own decent food (before I got caravans set)
And as others already said: Food is always the priority Get all the seeds you can Research. Every time the lil thing pops up saying research finished stop what you're doing and go to the menu to set up another.

My husband and I just started the game too. Is anyone else not liking how it’s so dark and foggy? Does this fog and grey go away later? Maybe I’m just old, is this game easier on younger eyes?

Try to avoid hiring the beggars. They cost a lot and honestly have minimal return on investment.

Actually you get more when expelling the beggars than what they cost to hire. No need to expel any though unless you desperately need some renown immediately. There are no options early on either so it's just dumb not to hire them.

I did not know this. I’ve just started a few run throughs and they dragged me down so much. I just waited it out until could afford better villagers.

I still have two among my 60 villagers. They only do delivering because I have specialists for all tasks that require skill. There's plenty of renown to go around and it's easy to farm some fast after you get a hunter shack to hunt elks. You can make trophies from the horns and put them up to get renown.

1st winter is the hardest - make sure you got berries and shrooms for Lub and yourself.

Archer villagers are op. I liberated Haerndean with about 6 archers and me as the sole melee guy

Make sure you always are eating food, even if it's just berries and mushrooms they boost your stamina and health greatly

Scout the land a bit before you commit to building. Your area will grow big pretty quick. Look for resource nodes and terrain that is mostly flat. Once you unlock the ability to build roads, try and grid up with said roads for speed/efficiency. Try to think ahead a bit for storage and common type buildings.

Have fun. Learn to fight bandits. And early on don't be in a huge hurry to eliminate the bandit camps around you. They can be annoying when they walk by, but you can also farm them for straps (which you need a bunch).
You can set your villagers to NOT stand their ground when bandits come by. This will have them flee, usually back to their house. Before I learned this Lubomir got beat up and had to respawn A LOT.
Medieval Dynasty building in a flat area was pretty optional. This game the area around you and your village not being level is a serious pain.
