That whole scene where he clears out the brothel when he’s going to rescue Tommy, is epic. Quite possibly my favorite part of the whole series. I see why he didn’t, but I wish he would’ve gotten a happier ending.

Here's a couple of contenders:

My reasoning - Teddy was a massive jerk. As the first born and being of Irish stock, I would have expected him to be much more protective of his abused mother (plenty old enough to see his own was a prick). Instead he pranked her by pretending to have polio for shits and giggles.

Just a generally annoying guy. Needed a proper paternal influence but when he finally got one, he chose to embrace pyromania.

MASSERIA NOT MARANZANO. In season 3 episode 10, A Man, A Plan..., Lucky and Meyer meet with Masseria and give him information about Nucky's plans to assassinate the Boss of All Bosses at the Turkish baths to get him to agree to give them funding for their H project. The thing is, they had no way of knowing how the Breadstick in a Bowtie was going to do it, as they had already left the room when and then departed Atlantic City shortly thereafter when he formulated his plan and gave out the orders and the only people in the room were Micky, Eli, Owen, and the progy who was going along with him. So how would they have known? Did I miss something?

Rewatching the show again, and Gillian is out on a date with Capt. Nixon from Band of Brothers 😂 and their company mentions that they’re from Evansville IN.

Gillian cringes and says she’s never heard of it

But that’s where that kid Roger was from! 😂 I won’t spoil if people haven’t seen it yet.

I was just in a Sopranos thread in which someone was asking about Boardwalk Empire. The responses seemed to be largely in favor of the first three seasons, while claiming that four and five had a dramatic drop off in quality.

I'm surprised by this take, as I had remembered at the time that season 4 was considered by critics to be the show's masterpiece. And all of these same dudes were puffing up season 3. Like I enjoy Bobby Cannavale, but Gyp Rosetti is so one note compared to the depth of character we get in villains Narcisse and Dunn Purnsley. Even Nucky is more interesting in season 4, as he is finally forced out of his ivory tower.

Most importantly, the run of delicious tragedies the 4th season builds to is amazing. It's like an evil episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. It's way more dramatically interesting than just turning Harrow into an action hero and having Gyp die as an aside. Where does this community stand with that?

I feel real bad and sad for what happened to him he made mistakes but this man was loyal to Nicky to the end

Knowing everything we know from his intro to his fall, how would you have handled Gyp? Could Nucky have snuffed out Gyp if Nuck wasn't preoccupied and acted more like the opening scenes of S3 and right before?

Despite some of the more horrendous things he does (which I don’t want to list here, to avoid spoilers for people new to the show) does anybody else kind of like him? He’s kind of a BAMF.

Just passed the part where Nucky asked the other guy for $1m, which I looked up and today would be just under 40m. The toaster that he paid $9 would have been $360 and Al Capones boss would have $400m if I’m remembering right that he said $10m. James also owed Nucky 3,000, which would be $120k. The dress was >$400, which I think is a lot for a dress even today. Are these the numbers what they were going for or did they just use today’s money?

I watched a lot of Stuff with him recently and would like to know if it worth watching the show for his Character or if hes not that important. What Seasons is he in?

If we evaluate the cast, Boardwalk Empire has far better actors in terms of quantity than The Sopranos.

Yet, I think The Sopranos is much better than Boardwalk Empire. Could it be the James Gandolfini effect? Is he so good that he takes the show to a whole other level?

Started a rewatch today n its like the whole plot is foreshadowed in it. Major difference from the 1st watch is that I now know what's up with jimmy. One of the most tragic guys ever imo 🥀🥀u poor soul. Earlier I had felt that he's just being moody or smth 🤧 *To the lost*

Watching gangs of New York and omg they made the capone actor play an Irish guy 😭😭😭splat my coffee when he pulled up. Dude has the same capone energy here too. Dk where to talk about this so posting here. This movie + BWE + once upon a time in america + sopranos are so meant to be watched in succession imo

I watched the show back when it was airing, and I still think it’s one of the absolute best moments in the entire series. I remember losing my mind when that episode first dropped. Nucky asking who his brother made a deal with, and then Capone—just looking so tiny—stepping out from behind all those huge soldiers. Classic.

I'm rewatching from the beginning, probably for the tenth time. I'm three-quarters of the way into S2, and reminded once again of the same question: why hasn't anybody shot Mickey Kuzik (Doyle) yet? I know it happens eventually, but even this early in here are Mickey's sins:

1) making an enemy of Jimmy very early on by pranking him with fermaldehyde.

2) getting caught with no allies to bail him out.

3) leaving a business that Chalky can easily just take.

4) partnering with the D'Lessio brothers, who blatantly think he's useless.

5) feeding his partner's intel on Chalky's operation, leading to a lynching.

6) feeding his partner's intel on George the Ward Boss so he could be attacked on the Boardwalk.

7) crawling back to Nucky with his tail between his legs.

8) having his alcohol production operation vilified by Arnold Rothstein.

.

12) introducing Jimmy to Manny Horovitz, with Jimmy being so angry at being stuck under Manny's grip that he throws Mickey over a balcony.

13) giving up Jimmy's address so that Manny can kill his wife.

It's not like he was ever good at this stuff either, he's always the butt of the jokes. The show is fantastic for character development, but we know nothing about Mickey other than his birth name and that he has a really annoying laugh.

One thing Boardwalk Empire doesn't really convey is just how powerful Nucky Johnson was outside Atlantic City.

In 1916, New Jersey's Republican factions couldn't agree on a candidate for governor. Nucky was one of the men who helped broker the solution.

The man they settled on was Walter Edge — a relatively minor character in Boardwalk Empire.

Edge won.

The funny part is that the supposedly safe candidate they helped put in the governor's chair eventually became a much bigger problem for New Jersey's political machines than anyone could have expected.

I‘m on my first time watch, now having reached season 4.
when I read that n this sub, I notice that Jimmy has a lot of fans, and I ask myself the question why.

He‘s neither funny nor charming nor particularly smart, he‘s basically just a guy who‘s really fucked up because of his mommy/daddy issues (who wouldnt be) and PTSD, and an insanely inflated ego .It‘s understandable why he‘s the way he is, but I don‘t find hin likable at all, and wonder why people seem to enjoy his character?
