πŸ“š Book Collection Need suggestion

I’m planning to start reading and collecting classics, and I’d love to build a good-quality hardcover collection. Which publisher/series would you recommend, especially considering translation quality, editions, cover design, and overall collectability?

I’d appreciate your suggestions!

πŸ“¦ New Acquisitions Dragonsteel Books The Eye of the World Leatherbound Edition has Finally Arrived

Pre-ordered the book back in February and it finally arrived yesterday. They had some manufacturing problems and paused production for a while until they figured everything out which was a large part of the delay. This is the "fixed" version of the book and it looks magnificent :) Look and feel is really nice, the illustrations and 2 tone printing are fantastic, and overall a very nice version of one of my favorite books! I did kind of a longer video for anyone interested looking over the book in more detail and comparing it to a Folio Society and Easton Press book, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYGkIb5r3Ok.

My only real negative of the book is in his it was packed and shipped. They placed the book in a box a good bit larger than the book itself with zero packing material so the book was able to bounce around within the box. Luckily my book arrived undamaged but I'm sure others will not be so lucky. Seems kind of lazy for a somewhat expensive book.

Waiting for the Galactic Bus by Parke Godwin. On my to-read list, but I’ve always loved the title and cover of this one.

German editions of the first two Harry Potter books. I'm pretty sure these are 1st/1st because of the 00 but I'm not familiar with German books. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The last picture shows a famous translation error that reads Snape Exploded instead of Exploding Snap, an in-world card game.

I guess just like in Star Wars the Germans got another unintentional spoiler.

Each book was $2 form a used bookshop.

πŸ’ Question Foxing, Mold, Something Else?

Thumbnail

I have read the guide on foxing versus mold. I think what I have here seems to be foxing. However, my main concern is that this stuff, particularly inside the covers, has a raised texture that can easily be felt by touch. This doesn’t seem consistent with foxing in my understanding.

There doesn’t seem to be any mildewy odors, but I want to be safe here and avoid introducing something that would spread to any other books.

πŸ’ Question Puffin Clothbound Books

I have recently brought 3 books from the Puffin clothbound collection, they have such beautiful designs but after doing a little research on the Penguin clothbound books I found a lot of people have been having problems with the quality of those books, the pattens of the books fade away and the pages can fall out even after 1 read, I brought my Puffin clothbound books thinking they would be very durable because they are clothbound but after researching I'm worried that this will happen to my books too, they are so very beautiful and have silver or gold foil on them if this helps recognise them, I know they have these in the collection: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Black Beauty, The Secret Garden, A Little Princess, Little Women, Peter Pan, The Wizard of Oz and more, does anyone have any experience of these books being of good or bad quality and durability?

πŸ’¬ General Looking for advice on finding a first edition or signed book

Hi everyone.Β  I’m looking for some advice.Β

My brother and I are both huge book lovers, but neither of us is really a book collector, so I’m completely new to this world. Β I’d love to get him a really special book as a gift β€” ideally a true first edition/first printing, a signed copy, or something else that would be considered particularly special or collectible.

I’m wondering if anyone can recommend reputable online dealers or places in Connecticut or Western Massachusetts that specialize in this kind of thing. Β I’d also love any advice on how to make sure a first edition is actually legitimate, or anything else you wish you knew before buying your first collectible book, since I’m realizing there’s a lot more to it than I thought!

I’m not looking to invest or resell β€” I just want to find something meaningful and special for him and make sure I’m buying from a reputable source.

Thanks so much for any advice.
