Hi guys,
Iโm hoping i can get some genuine helpful replies on this situation. This has been a stressing, haunting situation that i really need serious answers to. Iโve been hesitant asking for help here because i promise its worse the judgement iโve been fearing to get. But to start off, i have had an empty tank standing in my room for some months that i was planning on setting up again sometime. The set up i had before that was pretty crap. Then i set it up the first time and it still was. I did all of the research on the species i was gonna get: 4 amano shrimp and a school of rasbora, but then neglected to do any research on fishkeeping in general. I was stupid and i did everything wrong you could possibly do wrong; didnt cycle and after acclimating poured the store water along with the tankwater. Obviously this backfired insanely fast. One day passes by and my mom points out the water is cloudy. The tank has a lid so i didnt realize until later but the water also STANK and i was 100% dealing with a bacterial bloom and spike here. Then less that 24 hours later the first 2 rasbora deaths appear, then another, then another and after sometime the bloom finally sets down, my mom rushes to get me some equipment i honestly were better off with if i got them before stocking and throughout this whole situation i am in distress. i deeply mourn the fish i killed with my uneducated actions and i am in distress. My amano shrimp have been doing fine this whole time; they are molting as frequent as they should and graze on what they have. My veteran rasbora also still lives with no serious health complications but is glass surfing occasionally for every fair reason. The worst has finally passed and i get to calm down and in the meantime i improve the tank. My tank is slowly turning a lot more natural and i buy a lot more essential equipment. My parents really sympathized with me on this and promised to cover the costs of the fish i was gonna restock but i said id rather have them help me cover the costs of the equipment i wanted to buy to improve my tank for the remaining single rasbora and the 4 amano and that ill pay the restock myself. This felt like the most fair thing to do to the animals whoโs lives i had wasted. I spend several months improving the tank first, i get tests, i figure out the right water to use as the pH was far too high, and more plants. Plants end up (despite quarantine) carrying 2 hitch hiking damslefly larves that i got off lucky from and then i finally decide everything is ready for the restock my lonely rasbora has been deserving. Then i make my next error: we go all the way to the store where i got them, which isnt local, just to find theyre not on stock. Bummer. But they can order them to come in their load next week and call me when they arrive, i stupidly get them the same day they came in, not realizing i was about to transport a school that had JUST transported into a store.. everything seems fine though, one fish is a bit shyer but not concerningly isolated, stressed or ill. They all swim, they all eat, my veteran rasbora has been swimming with them since they were still acclimating so im figuring this is way better than the situation before restocking. Then 5 days pass by and i cannot find the shy one. After a long time of looking i think to myself that its safe to say it has passed. Some hours after this the vibe in the tank completely changes. Every rasbora starts acting stressed, hovering in the plants. 2 days later another one dies and at this point i just know this terrible experience is happening all over again. Im sure the double transport was just too much for the weak one and that its death sent the rest of the rasbora that had came in the restock to their stress-limit and die in a chain reaction. from that restock only one survived just like with the first stock meaning i now have 2 rasbora left; one from both generations. They appear to be a male and a female and fortunately reducing the temperature slightly has stopped the breeding harrassment from the male meaning they co exist well territory speaking, but obviously theyre not thriving as a duo. I added more catappa leaves and my tank is way more tinted now (it wasnt as tinted when i restocked and i wish i did add the current catappa leaf at that time already) I switched to live food which really seems to boost their overal health because theyre both bright red more often, though i still feed flakes when i dont have hatched brine at that moment, which i rub into dust into a small cup of tank water, then feed them through a pipette which ive also found works better than sprinkling it into the tank. They eat well and my tank has gotten very planted overtime so considering the 2 somewhat traumatic experiences of losses i was thinking of phasing out the rasbora; trying to continue doing everything in high quality for this duo, but after they settled into being the only 2 left they have started to hover idle for most of the day. Sure they graze sometimes, and they hover in the only open spaces in the tank, but i wake up to them kinda just hovering there, and it still makes me sad. I dont know if thats normal, but the female (only survivor from the first generation) was more actively swimming and grazing during the time it was alone than it does now. The only think im glad about is that its not fully alone and also isnt fighting over territory, i have seen pretty much no glass surfing anymore, but it just looks off. Now im reconsidering restocking; im hoping ordering them from a breeder directly will prevent everything that went wrong in the previous tries, but at the same time i really stress that i will fail and kill a whole group again. Even though i messed up and i learnt from it, it feels selfish to try a third time, when this is about live animals that also have their own characteristic traits and lives. Please let me know honestly what i should do here. Ive also considered rehoming but i dont even think i can find anyone, and on top of that i dont want to build up more trauma in them by doing so.
PS: i am able to confirm that my parameters, tank scaping and overall tank health has not been a problem in the second error. The reason some rasbora disappeared after death is due to my amanoโs eating their corpses, so nothing every really spiked. I also did not have a contagious disease running in the tank despite the stressed fish their immune systems weakening, i would not expect the remaining 2 to be physically fine if there was.
