Serrano Village
I lived in the dorms in Serrano Village way back when and I only just learned they had been shuttered since 2020. When Covid happened there was no on campus housing obviously, which meant no money for maintenance, which means the university could not afford to repair them or keep them up. Anyway, I had good memories living there and I was wondering if anybody knew what the plan was for them. Are they to be razed completely, refurbished or just empty long term? Seems like a real shame to me personally.

Lots of asbestos and black mold apparently. Juggled in front of them to spread joy to the decaying buildings :)

They ought to refurbish them, repurpose them or tear them down already. Nothing has been done with them for almost four years now. They're just sitting empty.

Yeah it is too bad. They were built back in 1972. Evidently there is not enough money to do any of those options so they will continue to mulder as it were.

Hmmm. I don’t see that working out. When I enrolled, there were 9k students total and lots of campus space. It was quiet and peaceful. It looks like administration wants to create a massive Cal State Long Beach of 40k students without the beach.

It's kinda sad, I remember seeing a PDF where the school had a whole future plan to revise the library's front lawn and do something about Serrano as well, but I Seriously think they just don't have the money to tear down those buildings..... also now its all just full of asbestos so eeeek!

My son is a student. He heard there is asbestos there. But we also know that the housing department has been having trouble. Housing is only at 87% of capacity so they aren’t bringing in as much as they need. Coyote, Arrowhead and University are all still paying back building costs. Serrano had been the only one paid off and making profit. Last year the chancellor did a shady deal where he had the Student Union loan 3 million dollars to the Housing Dept with no interest, taking the money students pay in for nice things like the Cog, the pool, cultural and lgbtq clubs etc. Housing doesn’t have the money to do anything with Serrano right now much less upgrade or maintain the other housing.

long story short, housing is in debt and can't afford to restore or destroy it.

Why not refurbish part of Serrano Village instead of making it a ghost town? It makes more sense to me anyway. It represents San Bernardino. There are not enough funds to fix anything so things worsen or lie fallow.

like i said, they’re too broke to. it would cost roughly the same to do either option. they are pretty much screwed.

Wow I've just learned that too. I used to dorm in Coyote Village and knew people that dormed mostly in Serrano back in 2018. Sad to know they haven't been used anymore.
